Current Research and News:
Sexual Functioning in Women with Eating Disorders. Objective:
To describe sexual functioning in women with eating disorders. Method:
We assessed physical intimacy, libido, sexual anxiety, partner status,
and sexual relationships in 242 women from the International Price
Foundation Genetic Studies relative to normative data. Results:
Intercourse (55.3%), having a partner (52.7%), decreased sexual desire
(66.9%), and increased sexual anxiety (59.2%) were common. Women with
restricting and purging anorexia nervosa had a higher prevalence of loss
of libido than women with bulimia nervosa and eating disorder not
otherwise specified (75%, 74.6%, 39%, and 45.4%, respectively). Absence
of sexual relationships was associated with lower minimum lifetime body
mass index (BMI) and earlier age of onset; loss of libido with lower
lifetime BMI, higher interoceptive awareness and trait anxiety; and
sexual anxiety with lower lifetime BMI, higher harm avoidance and
ineffectiveness. Sexual dysfunction in eating disorders was higher than
in the normative sample. Discussion: Sexual dysfunction is common across
eating disorders subtypes. Low BMI is associated with loss of libido,
sexual anxiety, and avoidance of sexual relationships. Source: Int J Eat Disord.

Depression as a Moderator of Sociocultural Influences on Eating
Disorder Symptoms in Adolescent Females and Males. This study aimed
to explore the role of depression as a moderator of sociocultural
influences on eating disorder symptoms. A sample of 509 adolescents (56%
female) completed self-report questionnaires assessing depression, body
dissatisfaction, drive for thinness, bulimic symptoms and sociocultural
influences on appearance from family, peers and the media. Both girls
and boys displaying high levels of depressive symptoms perceived
stronger media and peer influences on appearance. Among girls, eating
disorder symptoms were directly affected by sociocultural influences, in
particular media influences, as well as by depression. However,
depression played only a limited role as a moderator of these
relationships. Among boys, sociocultural influences and depression
revealed fewer direct effects on eating disorder symptoms. However,
depression had a greater moderating effect on these relationships.
Future research into the role of depression may increase the
understanding of gender differences in body dissatisfaction, drive for
thinness and bulimic symptoms. Source: J Youth Adolesc. 2010 Apr;39(4):393-402.
Exploring Quality of Life in the Eating Disorders. Objective: The
present study aimed to investigate the impact of Body Mass Index (BMI),
duration of illness and severity of illness on quality of life within a
sample of individuals in treatment for an eating disorder. In addition
this study explored differences in specific areas of quality of life
(Psychological, Physical/Cognitive, Work/School and Financial) according
to specific eating disorder diagnoses. Method: Participants (N = 156)
were adults currently receiving treatment for an eating disorder. Eating
disorder symptomatology and quality of life were assessed using
self-report questionnaires. BMI, duration of illness and eating disorder
diagnosis was obtained during a clinical interview. Results: Severity of
the eating disorder and BMI were predictors of low quality of life.
Duration of illness, contrary to clinical expectations was not a
significant predictor of poor quality of life. In terms of differences
across diagnostic groups, individuals with a diagnosis of anorexia
nervosa in this sample were found to have lower psychological and
physical/cognitive quality of life than those with an EDNOS or BN
diagnoses. Source: Eur Eat Disord Rev. 2010 Mar;18(2):147-53.

Doing What Works: An Integrative System for the Treatment of Eating
Disorders from Diagnosis to Recovery. Author: Abigail Horvitz Natenshon.
Eating disorders at times leave practitioners feeling as emotionally
challenged and out of control as the patients they treat. This is the
first book of its kind to provide support, direction, clarity, and
optimism to clinicians treating these disorders. In describing what to
do and how to do 'what works,' reader-friendly strategies and holistic
guidelines bring together science and human personality, protocols and
art, skill and instinct, evidence-based research and practicable
clinical applications to provide a fully integrative approach to eating
disorders care. In Doing What Works, Ms. Natenshon fills the gaps that
currently exist in professional education and practice and in the
general understanding of what sets eating disorder diagnosis and
treatment apart from other disorders. The author, a psychotherapist with
40 years of experience treating eating disorders in patients of all ages
with a specialty in working with children and families, speaks to health
professionals and parents as pivotal advocates for the child in
treatment and recovery. To order visit

Marketing Ideas:
Follow Success: If you see a competitor repeatedly doing some
sort of advertising then try doing the same thing. The fact that
this person or company is repeating the process could very well mean
that this advertising is working and that you too should be following the lead.
