BALANCE & HARMONY
By Angela Reinhardt
Heraclitus, one of the greatest Greek philosophers, is known for proposing that the universe is a balance of opposing forces, constantly changing and constantly seeking re-balance. His philosophy can be viewed as contradictory, but upon closer look, appropriately describes this experience.
For example, the systems of our bodies are ever-seeking a state of homeostasis, of balance and harmony, fighting to maintain internal stability in opposition to the constant forces against that stability: pollution, viruses, bacteria, trauma and pathogens of every kind. If the struggle is more unsuccessful than not, then the result is dis-ease, dis-comfort, dis-harmony to some degree – and the struggle continues. If the struggle is more successful than not, then the result is a glorious state of health leading to a powerful mind and a deep spiritual connection, nothing short of miraculous. And when the struggle continues, as it always will, from this perspective of balance and harmony, it becomes less acute, more manageable, more tolerable – even welcomed and appreciated.
Sages throughout time have been known to consciously put themselves in uncomfortable situations in order to stretch their physical and mental capacity, dissolving boundaries, ultimately leading to higher spiritual awareness; the goal of every sage.
We seek balance in our lives. We are a part of this world, this universe, this contradiction of opposing forces. In our yoga practice, we find comfort in striking that balance, at least occasionally, even for just a moment or two. We choose to practice the intense twist of Parivrtta Trikonasana (revolved triangle pose), one hand reaching toward the earth, the other reaching toward the sky; or gravity-defying Bakasana (crane pose), finding that elusive point of balance in between the stability of our toes on the earth and tipping forward too much, landing on our nose; and even the scary stillness of Sivasana (corpse pose), perhaps the most difficult pose we choose to practice, quieting and softening the constant thoughts of our mind, harmoniously allowing nothingness and everything to just be. And we reap the rewards as a result, on and off our mat.
We practice yoga, stretching our bodies and minds and exploring the outer edges of those opposing forces, for the reward of realizing and feeling the softness and comfort of the exact union, the precise connection of these forces, that point of balance and harmony – and to appreciate the experience of the sweet journey in between, no matter what level our practice (in our minds) may be.
Heraclitus expressed: Opposition brings harmony. Out of disharmony comes the fairest harmony. We all experience this in our yoga practice. We are all sages.

6/20, 2-4pm • $35 (Early Bird Registration - $25 if registered by June 11th)
Sustaining an injury for anyone is bad enough but for an athlete who has endured a tough training program for a specific event or match, it is catastrophic. Even for someone who just enjoys exercise on a regular basis an injury can seriously interfere with a weight loss program or affect total wellbeing.
Most injuries are caused by taking a joint beyond it’s safe range.
Join fitness professional and flexibility specialist Cheryl Alker in this results based workshop as she teaches you how to take your “safe” range to another level and significantly reduce your risk of injury.
