Its name originates from its original festival location in the Sierra Nevada mountains. The event  takes place for the fifth consecutive year at the Mendocino County Fairgrounds in Boonville, CA.

This year's SNWMF lineup features some of music's greats in world, roots, vintage, dancehall, modern reggae and ska artists and sound system DJ's. Bands are scheduled in tandem on the two stages, and conclude with a  fire dance performance on what is known as the Valley stage, a site that is built from the ground up in the Grandstand area of the fairgrounds. The show's varied offerings for children including music performers a parade, and opportunities for participation in free drum, dance, and yoga sessions throughout the weekend make it  possible for cultural exploration on many levels.

The Village stage and Kidz Zone host Children's educational and multi-cultural entertainment. Sageman Drums workshops take place throughout the weekend and are open to all ages in the Drum Temple.  There is a full program of activities designated for the younger generation with kid performers, Arts & Crafts projects are underway throughout the weekend and a daily Kids Parade that will be led by the wonderful Samba Stilt Circus, a troupe of stilt performers.

The festival hosts several non-profit organizations and a diverse of ethnic food vendors from Indian to Ethiopian as well as vegetarian and sustainable raw food vendors.  Crafts in the international bazaar in the village area are curated to present a unique array of items from around the world and a zero waste initiative is vigorously pursued to manage the impact of the festival on the environment.

REGGAE RULE THE TOWN

Tribute to a Reggae Legend This summer, Putumayo World Music will release Tribute to a Reggae Legend, a multi-genre album featuring artists from around the world performing many of Bob Marley’s best-loved songs.

The collection is the first tribute album Putumayo has produced and its first with five exclusive, original tracks. Few people have made the kind of lasting, universal impact that Bob Marley has made with his music. In his short 36 years, Marley managed not only to introduce hundreds of millions to reggae but also spread powerful messages of peace, love, human rights and acceptance.

It’s no surprise that almost 30 years after his death, one can travel to any part of the globe and witness his far-reaching musical legacy.

Artists who recorded songs for this release include Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars, a group of refugees displaced to Guinea during the Sierra Leone civil war. They beautifully harmonize on a poignant interpretation of “No Woman, No Cry.” South African Afro-fusion band Freshlyground contributes an original recording of “Africa Unite,” demonstrating their signature mix of African folk, kwela and jazz. Original recordings of “Could You Be Loved” by Québecois singer Caracol (formerly of the group Dobracaracol), “Natural Mystic” by California reggae/rock band Rebelution and “Sun is Shining” by Ghanaian reggae artist Rocky Dawuni, add to the diversity of the collection. A rising international star, Brazilian singer-songwriter Cèu blends elements of bossa nova and soul in a tranquil rendition of “Concrete Jungle.”

The multi-ethnic group Playing for Change incorporate many instruments, styles and languages in “One Love,” emphasizing the recurring theme of universal love found in many of Marley’s songs. The album also features Honolulu-based reggae band Three Plus (“Is This Love”), New England bluegrass, folk and country band Northern Lights with Jonathan Edwards (“Waiting in Vain”), Caribbean, Indian and African fusion band Funkadesi (“Real Situation”), Hawaiian singer-guitarist Robi Kahakalau (“Do it Twice”) and Canadian pianist and singer-songwriter Julie Crochetière (“Mellow Mood”). Tribute to a Reggae Legend is the newest addition to Putumayo’s successful reggae series, which includes African Reggae, World Reggae, Jamaica: Reggae Homeland and Reggae Playground. You can listen to the entire release at www.putumayopress.com .

THE 29th EPISODE OF NICHOLAS Da SILVA'S GRAPHIC NOVEL SERIES 'DREAD AND ALIVE' FEATURING DREW MCINTOSH: JAMAICAN SUPER HERO
Dread & Alive....is an ongoing graphic novel series about Jamaican Super Hero Drew McIntosh. If you missed any episodes, click here to read:

Meanwhile, under a crescent-shaped moon filled with amber, Cudjoe and Philip sat alone by a campfire, in a disclosed area some distance from the village. Still wearing the same clothing from dinner, the men sat cross-legged on the ground, facing each other.
“There is much catching up between us,” Cudjoe continued, “but first, let us celebrate!” The benevolent village chief surprised Philip by revealing another bottle of white rum from under his thick robe.
“Again?” Philip said, his head still ringing from the first celebration. Cudjoe took a sip from the bottle before passing it to Philip who in turn, took a drink from it, then another before wiping his mouth with the back of his hands.
“How does it feel to be home again? Cudjoe said, boisterously.
“It feels good,” Philip said, setting the bottle on the ground in front of him.
            “How’s Cuffee doing?”
            “He’s doing fine.”
“Does he … remember his mother?”
“Not at all. Juba has been caring for him as if he was her own.”
“Does he know who I am?” Philip asked, staring in the flames of the campfire.
            “No.”
Philip sighed, then looked away from the flames of the fire and out into the dark forest surrounding them. “I see.”
Cudjoe sensed something was bothering Philip.
             “Do you think about her?”
“Huh,” Philip said, turning his attention to Cudjoe.
“Beneba? Do you miss her?”
“Yes … yes I do,” Philip answered, hesitantly. “There are times when I replay that fateful night in my mind.”
“What happen that night was meant for a reason. You must remember, life has been written for us. We’re just fulfilling the book.”
“Right, right,” Philip said, rubbing the palms of his hands together. “So tell me, why am I here?” Philip said, quickly changing the subject.
Cudjoe took a deep breath. “Very well. As you know, Quaco and I have ruled the Cockpit Country together for a long time.”
“That’s right,” Philip continued, “by the way, where is Quaco?”
“I’m coming to that,” Cudjoe continued, “six months ago, several of the villagers came to me with information that Quaco was practicing his magic on the people of the village, an action deemed punishable by banishment from the village. I confronted Quaco and he insisted that the allegations against him were false; that they were merely blasphemous rumors. I let the incident slide until a month later. That’s when I found Cuffee—,”
“Cuffee!” Philip exclaimed.

KEITH RICHARDS TO RELEASE ALBUM OF RASTAFARIAN SPIRITUALS

Rolling Stones guitarist revisits Wingless Angels project he formed with Jamaican musicians in the early 1970s

With the Rolling Stones' Exile On Main Street still riding high in the charts, Keith Richards is revisiting another decades-old project, releasing new music with the Wingless Angels. Wingless Angels II, an album of Rastafarian spirituals, is the group's first release in 13 years.

Richards began playing with Jamaican singer Justin Hinds in the early 1970s, when he visited Kingston. "I was just one of the crowd," Richards recalled. "They had no idea who the Rolling Stones were. They didn't even give a shit." Together with Hinds, a celebrated ska and rocksteady musician, Richards jammed with neighbours, local fishermen and divers, exploring Rasta chants, Nyabinghi drumming and the country's devotional traditions. Although amateur recordings of the sessions began in 1972, formal studio production didn't happen until 1995, when a friend of Richards arrived at his Ochio Rios home in a mobile recording truck. The first Wingless Angels album was released in 1997, on Richards's own Mindless label.
Hinds, former leader of ska group the Dominoes, died in 2005. "He [was] a diamond," Richards said. "When you hear his voice, you just get a nice warm glow. He was always incredibly attuned to what was going on around him, and he would calm other brothers down if they were getting too jumpy, or stop a fight from going on if he had to." But Hinds was also a remarkable singer. And in the year before he died, Richards had once again been recording their collaborations, preparing for a possible release.

Now, those tapes will see the light of day. "It was very organic," Richards explained. "Justin would just say, 'OK, let's take up a beat', and he would start chanting, with the drums going. We'd start in the afternoon and go 'til 11 or 12 o'clock at night." Nothing was planned, Richards said. "You can't get artsy with the tracks or anything. It is what it is. I realised early on that this was the way I wanted to record this band. They've got to feel free just to do it, and that's it."

The result – streaming now at the Wingless Angels website – is a world away from the Stones' blues rock. With proceeds from the album going to Hinds's family, according to a recent interview, Richards is also reissuing the first Wingless Angels as part of a double-disc set. "[Wingless Angels] play deliberately at just slightly under heart rate," Richards said. "The drumming goes deeper than your bones. It's marrow music." The album is out on 23 September.

BOOK ON REGGAE SUNSPLASH TO BE LAUNCHED
Book on Reggae Sunsplash to be launched By Basil Walters Observer staff reporter Monday, June 07, 2010 Bookmark and Share The latest book chronicling an important era of Jamaican music will be launched on Saturday at the Ashanti Restaurant, Hope Gardens in Kingston.

What is especially heartening about the book Reggae Sunsplash 1978-1998, is that it is written by a Jamaican author Java Immanuel-I who documented two decades of the significant event that bears the title of the book. Reggae Sunsplash is the mother of Jamaican international music festivals.

This book is a monument of sort to the late Tony Johnson who 32 years ago created a company called Synergy Productions for which he, Ronnie Burke, Don Green and the late radio broadcaster John Wakeling were its four founding directors responsible for promoting Reggae Sunsplash. Java Immanuel-I [Hide Description] Java Immanuel-I

Started at Jarrett Park in Montego Bay, Reggae Sunsplash was the first major festival of reggae culture in the summer locally that attracted a global audience by showcasing all the legendary acts of the golden period of the music for an entire week. Performers included seminal Jamaican reggae icons such as the king himself, Bob Marley, I-Three, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, Dennis Brown, Burning Spear, Third World, Culture, Toots & the Maytals, Freddie McGregor, Half Pint, Steel Pulse, UB40, Buju Banton, Beres Hammond, Diana King, Maxi Priest, Morgan Heritage, and the list endless. In the 1980s and 1990s it became a touring festival which played at venues throughout the United States. It was the first dusk til dawn music event in Jamaica. Owing to the fact that it was a very popular festival, at times it was very difficult to find hotel rooms, so a tradition developed of camping out on beaches. Sunsplash folded after the 1999 festival after a series of challenges which saw the festival moving at different times from Montego Bay to Jamworld and the Ranny Williams Centre in Kingston and venues across the island.

Prior to the staging of Reggae Sunsplash, the hotels in Jamaica were traditionally closed during the summer period. The four founding partners staged the festival each year for a number of years and successfully created an annual summer tourist season in Jamaica.

The success of Reggae Sunsplash led to a wave of annual music festivals in Jamaica and the Caribbean islands. In 1984 the Reggae Sunsplash festival was staged at the Crystal Palace football grounds in London, UK. In 1985 the Reggae Sunsplash World tour was launched in the USA and Japan and subsequent years saw the Reggae Sunsplash festival touring extensively throughout North America, Europe, South America and the Far East. Java Immanuel-I, the author of the book edited by veteran journalist Leslie Miles with foreword by Mutabaruka, started in 1979, the first reggae Caribbean radio programme in Philadelphia on 90.1 FM, owned and operated by Temple University. His radio programme was aired for 15 years.

As it now turns out, that was the beginning of an endless trail of promoting his roots and culture. Out of his radio show came his non-profit organisation Caribbe Inc. Next it was Caribbe newspaper, then the popular Reggae Calendar and now the book, Reggae Sunsplash 1978-1998. Immanuel-I also hosted an interview show titled Information Exchange. He has interviewed the likes of Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Jimmy Cliff, Judy Mowatt, the late Cedella Booker (mother of Bob Marley), Sly and Robbie, Jackie Mittoo and readers would be encouraged to get a copy of the book to see who else is on that list.

JAMDOWN - A FILM - SOON TO BE RELEASED ON DVD JAMDOWN MOVIE TO BE RE-RELEASED JULY 27TH
JAMDOWN takes you on a journey back to Kingston, Jamaica1980, straight into the heart of the Jamaican reggae scene, following legendary Reggae artists Toots Hibbert and The Congo's.

The film, shot in 1980 had a limited release in France and therefore remained relatively undiscovered by the rest of the world.  For the first time in almost 30yrs this film has now been made available to own on dvd.

The film contains some of the only known early footage of The Congos, performing tracks from their legendary Heart Of The Congo's LP which was produced by Lee Perry at the Black Ark studios at the height of their career.

Jamdown contains some of the most electrifying live reggae footage to have ever been captured on film.

"Jamdown" is a melodic time machine that transports us magically to a
time of massive creativity as reggae was emerging to the outside world.
We see some of its most rootical exponents at the height of their
powers. The film's re-emergence after three decades is almost
miraculous, and it should not be missed by anyone who cares about Jah
Music.” – Roger Steffens – Reggae Historian

Proudly presented by The Oregon Constant Gardener
August 13, 14, 15th 2010
Marcola, Oregon – (20 Miles North of Eugene) At Bob’s Ranch on Mohawk Loop Road

The sixth installment of the Northwest World Reggae Festival (NWWRF) delivers roots musicians from nine countries and three continents. Located 20 minutes north of Eugene, Oregon, in the foothills of the pristine Cascade mountain range, Bob’s Ranch is a private irrigated campground boasting free heated showers, 2+ miles of shady camping, hiking trails and a lush green natural amphitheater with a view for all.

This year, Friday headliners are the Twinkle Brothers, who have recorded over 60 albums on their own label since forming in Jamaica in the seventies and still awe crowds with their captivating harmonies and 12-piece band.

Don Carlos, original member of Black Uhuru and a long standing roots and culture legend from the Waterhouse district of Jamaica, also headlines Friday to promote his new release “Changes.” Saturday features Dezerie, the roots empress hailing from St. Croix and backed by Ron Benjamin and the Midnite Band. Dezierie blends the fire of a warrior and the guidance and protection of a mother in her passionate delivery of her lyrics and message.

Saturday night brings Ozomatli, a highly politicized amalgamation of hip-hop, salsa, funk and dancehall regga. Ozomatli was recently named U.S State Department Cultural Ambassadors and bring their high energy along with Niyorah (St.Croix), Tippa Irie (Great Briton) and more to NWWRF. Sunday brings Garaj Mahal, Humble Soul, Albino!, Marv Ellis, Loveness Wesa and more.  A Latenight DanceHall slated every evening features Northern California, Oregon and Washington MCs & Selechtah’s. This year’s NWWRF hosts are Wisdom and J Ross Parrelli, introducing more than 30 acts from around the world to gather for a heightening musical vibration, raise social awarness and spread the message of love and unity.

NWWRF encourages sustainability and asks fans to bring reusable containers and enjoy natural cascade spring water, available for free all around the site.  Also, “Pitch in and Win” by bringing your recycling to Oregon Waste Free’s sorting station and receive a raffle ticket for the chance to win prizes from their many sponsors.  Refundable bottles and cans are donated to the Marcola Boy Scout chapter.  Recycled kitchen grease and bio-diesel fuel powers the stage, site and trucks. All food waste is composted and wind power is used at our office. The food booths and staff/performer kitchen are organic and local. Through In Ticketing <http://www.inticketing.com/ , a tree has been planted for each ticket sold, totalling 12,000 trees over the past four years. REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE!

NWWRF is Family Friendly.
Kid’s Village in the Grove provides a safe environment with a shady arts and crafts area, the Unity Kids Parade and song circles. Youth 14 and under are admitted free and family camping is nestled in a quiet cove.

Family and friends experience the roots of mystical guidance created by sunrise yoga, African dance classes, visual arts, community spirit, conscious music from around the world, delicious organic food, fair trade/sustainable businesses, non-profit organizations and fair trade crafts from more than 50 vendors to inspire your mind and energize your soul.

NWWRF’s success is due to the creative energy, dedication, skills and talents of organizers, staff, volunteers, sponsors, vendors and performers.  With the help of major community participation, this annual event continues to inspire the masses to keep coming back!  “The people of Oregon should be proud of what was on display at this year’s festival.”

REGGAE ON THE RIVER INVITES YOU.....

HEADLINE: I EYE’S ‘MAMA’S HAND’ MAKES STRIDES
Just a few weeks after being released, I Eye’s video ‘Mama’s Hand’ has moved close to the top of the RETV MVP top 20 charts. At the end of last week it was at number four and, with the early positive response to the high-quality Ras Tingle video, it is expected that ‘Mama’s Hand’ will continue to gather momentum.

The interest in the video, in which the strikingly attractive I Eye goes to her former home and is then involved in a series of flashbacks involving her mother, has spread into print and outside Jamaica as well.

In action on the web, ‘Mama’s Hand’ grabbed the interest of www.jamaicansmusic.com for a Mother’s Day feature. Plus, recognising her growing listenership, I Eye now has an Italian Facebook page. This is to give to those who made ‘Mama’s Hand’ the top video in the Energy TV Under Pressure/DJ Gusma rankings in early May.

Naturally, I Eye feels “extremely good and proud”. Although she was confident in the message and quality of the song and the video, the speed of the response still took her by surprise. “That’s when I realised how people really like the song and have been watching and voting for the song,” she said, adding that it had make a leap from number 14 to four in just one week.

When she got the script for the ‘Mama’s hand’ video she had liked it right away. After looking over it twice she went on the set and was surprised when director Ras Tingle did not say anything to her as she moved. “I said to him ‘you’re not telling me if I doing the right thing?’. And he said ‘listen to me, is when I talk to you, that’s when you not doing the right thing.. If I don’t talk to you that means you’re on track’,” I Eye recalled, laughing.

She will be at the centre of another video shoot soon, for the single ‘Crazy World’. Once again she has seen the script and loves it and I Eye says she has “crazy ideas” about what to do.

What is the verdict of history, the lesson of life? Man must venture, dare and hope to succeed and success will attend him. So apathy must be replaced with audacity, blind faith with questing faith, doubt by exploratory deeds and if man can believe in nothing else, he must learn to believe in himself. If he cannot aspire to something infinitely greater beyond himself, he must aspire to infinite greatness within himself. (AUTHOR UNKNOWN)
