NEW FRONTMAN FOR WAILERS
|
|
|
|
Bob Marley and the Wailers
Krista Henry, Staff Reporter
The Wailers band has been injected with new life. The addition of Koolant, the new lead singer of the legendary band, has been notable.
Known around the world, in the main for its association with Bob Marley, the Wailers, in England alone, have notched over 20 hits on the charts. With Marley, the Wailers have sold in excess of 250 million albums worldwide.
Outside of work with Marley, the 12-member Wailers have also played or performed with international acts like Sting, the Fugees, Stevie Wonder, Carlos Santana, and Alpha Blondy, as well as reggae legends such as Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, and Burning Spear.
With years of experience in the business, the Wailers are hoping to breathe some new life with young singer Koolant, who joined the crew in February.
Backbone of the Wailers
The Sunday Gleaner recently sat down with Koolant and bassist Aston 'Family Man' Barrett, known as the backbone of the Wailers.
The nucleus of the Wailers was created in 1960 when Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh recruited the Barrett brothers, Aston, and drummer, Carly, to play for them. Wailer and Tosh left two years later. It was at this point that the in-demand Barrett brothers - whose rhythms also underpinned innumerable '70s reggae hits by other acts - assumed the title of Wailers and backed Marley on the group's international breakthrough album Natty Dread. The work with Marley continued even after his death in 1981.
Years of hard work have brought 'Family Man' Barrett many memories.
One of those, a performance in London, Barrett has called his most memorable.
"In setting the pace for the Jamaican reggae music, our first opening was in London. We played at a place called the 'Speak Easy' doing two shows a night for two weeks at one spot, and after we finished, it was written in the paper that the first song we did cast a spell on them, and after that it was like magic."
Today, Koolant is casting all the magic.
It was an average day in St Thomas when Koolant received a life-changing call from the Wailers.
"The Wailers call me up and dat's it. Ask me how I would like to perform wid the Wailers group, and I didn't turn down the offer 'cause being a solo artiste in Jamaica is very hard. So getting that opportunity to be with one of the most legendary groups of all times was very important to me. It gives me the chance to expand what I have in me, it gives me the chance to spread the music to the people, and gives me a chance to sing the legend, Bob Marley's music is a great honour," said Koolant.
According to the band's lead singer, Bob Marley's music has long been an inspiration to him.
"Right now, being the lead singer of the Wailers, expect new material being brought forth to make it stronger. Bob Marley made it strong, but now is the time to press on."
So far, Koolant says the experience has been good. For the first time, the singer has performed to crowds of 20,000.
With youth on its side, the Wailers continue to do great things in the business. Their most recent collaborators include international acts Kenny Chesney, Eve, Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat. Recent work also includes the song Step For Mankind, which was written by Duane Stephenson for the United Nations' World Food Programme, and another song called Shining Star.
"We're going off to Europe for the summer. Looking forward to that - that's my first time going to Europe."

ONE LOVE REGGAE FESTIVAL AT HAINAULT FOREST
|
|
|
WHAT have Kingston, Jamaica, and Hainault got in common?
Thirty-two years ago, the legendary Bob Marley performed at the first One Love Peace Concert in Kingston.
It was held during a political civil war between the Jamaican Labour Party and the People's National Party.
And it peaked during Marley & The Wailers' performance of Jammin, when the singer joined the hands of political rivals, Michael Manley (PNP) and Edward Seaga (JLP).
This year's One Love Festival, in honour of that concert, will be a three-day affair, the number one reggae festival in the UK, and it will be held in Hainault Forest Country Park on August 6-8.
And, according to the organisers, tickets are selling at record rates.
A stack of national and international artists will play. There will be poetry, spoken word, a Fair Trade village and a Sunday carnival procession.
One Love Festival is a melting pot - a multicultural, ethical, free trade and environmentally-friendly event, buzzing with creativity, ideas and soul.
It boasts 100 per cent compost toilets, a target of 80 per cent recycling and solar-powered sauna and showers.
One Love Festival has put the ticket-buying frenzy down to the recent sunny weather, the new location, past festival successes and this year's line-up which includes Luciano, Benjamin Zephaniah, Tippa Irie, Gappy Ranks, Winston Mcanuff, Radio 1's Ras Kwame and Robbo Ranx and local acts among hundreds of others.
The music areas will feature some of the most influential reggae and dub musicians, bands and DJs from the scene, and festival-goers will be entertained from day until night, with some additional surprises along the way.
Festival organiser Dan Wiltshire said: "London is a long time coming and we can't wait to hold the festival in its new setting.
"It's going to be a really special event - we've had some really positive feedback and there has been a huge buzz about 2010."
Tickets can be purchased from www.onelovefestival.co.uk.
NYC BROOKLYN MUSIC FESTIVAL TO SHOWCASE TOP REGGAE, HIP HOP ACTS
Festival partnering with leading urban radio station CBS, 92.3 NOW to increase impact New York, NY: Thousands of Caribbean American nationals in the New York Diaspora will converge on the Aviator Sports & Recreation Center on American Independence Day July 4 for the third annual Brooklyn Music Festival.
The 2010 lineup includes Atlanta blaze-fire rapper and hit machine B.o.B and Fabulous, multi platinum selling reggae artiste Shaggy, Gregory Issacs, King Yellowman, Barrington Levy, Lady Saw, Assassin, Tanya Stephens. D’Angel, Shabba, Daville, ska bands The Rudie Crew and New York Ska Jazz Ensemble, and several other acts.
This sizzling one-day festival has quickly become a premium item on the summer calendar of events in New York City, and its placement over a major holiday weekend will ensure a big participation from locals as well as out-of-towners in this celebration of the legendary and compelling Jamaican culture. In past years, the festival has attracted over 10,000 patrons.
This year the festival is partnering with New York City’s newly crowned CBS radio market leader 92.3 NOW FM in order to bring new layers of demographic energies to the event. “This year we have made great efforts to broaden the scope of the festival to make the offering culturally more full-bodied”, festival founder and promoter George Crooks commented. “The event is still anchored in excellent reggae music, but this year we’ve added pop and ska. Additionally we have expanded vending to include classic culinary temptations, arts & crafts souvenirs and colorful urban wear from scores of small merchants”, Crooks continued.
The festival comes as good news too for Caribbean American New Yorkers hungry for entertainment and who have seen a downturn in recent months in both the quality and quantity of ethnic entertainment in the New York tri-state region due to a litany of tribulations –from visa woes to artist incarcerations. The timing of the Brooklyn Music Festival is smart too, coming as it does at the startup point for the usually hectic summer concert season when reggae music lovers embrace the events of choice. Part of the proceeds from this year’s festival will be donated to the American Foundation of the University of the West Indies (AFUWI) scholarship fund.
Gates open at 12 noon and show time is 1:00 PM with free parking available to all patrons. Children under 12 are free. Tickets are now on sale at all leading ticket outlets throughout the New York tri-state region. For more, go to www.TIX4ME.com or www.brooklynmusicfestival.com

THE 32rst EPISODE OF NICHOLAS Da SILVA'S GRAPHIC NOVEL SERIES 'DREAD AND ALIVE' FEATURING DREW MCINTOSH: JAMAICAN SUPER HERO
|
|
Dread & Alive....is an ongoing graphic novel series about Jamaican Super Hero Drew McIntosh. If you missed any episodes, click here to read:
"Ahhh, the staff ... does it interest you?" the Obeahman asked, a bone-chilling rasp in his voice.
Shaking, Cuffee dropped the deadly stick and turned around to face his master.
"No, it’s nothing to me," Cuffee babbled. "I was just ..."
"Shhh ..." ShadowCatcher placed his crooked finger across his withered lips.
Fearing some sort of punishment, Cuffee quickly took his place at the foot of the throne and knelt, head bowed, before his master. ShadowCatcher chuckled, then quietly picked up his staff and settled into his chair.
"What brings you here?” Shadowcatcher demanded.
Cuffee hesitated before struggling for an answer. "I-I-I’ve come with important news, master," he stammered.
"If you’re here to tell me that we have visitors to the Cockpit Country, I already know this," ShadowCatcher hissed, revealing, for the first time, his fork tongue.
"It’s about our visitor. It is Philip McIntosh."
"Well, well ... now that is something I did not know," ShadowCatcher said, showing his surprise. "So Philip has returned to Accompong." ShadowCatcher lifted his head just enough to reveal his glowing eyes. He edged forward in his chair, eager to know more about Philip's return. "So tell me … is he here alone?"
“No master,” Cuffee replied. “He’s come with a woman and a young boy.”
“A boy?” ShadowCatcher continued, “And what is this boy’s name?”
Cuffee slowly raised his head. “His name is Drew. He is their son.”
“Hmmm.” ShadowCatcher rubbed his chin, “the boy … he interests me. What does he look like?”
“He’s not like the others. He has thick, woolly hair, like Cudjoe.”
ShadowCatcher rose from his chair and, holding his staff in both hands behind his back, he began to pace. "Drew McIntosh," he whispered, “I wonder what Cudjoe has in store for you?” He turned and stepped down from his throne and approached the
kneeling Cuffee. “I want you to do something for me.”
“What is it master?” Cuffee asked, staring at the unwashed feet of his ruler.
“I want you to return to Accompong. You must do so before firstlight so that no one knows you were gone. I then want you to befriend this Drew McIntosh. I want you to get to know him. Become his friend. Win his confidence. Once you have done this, I then want you to lure him into the forest. I will take care of the rest.”
"As you wish, master."
"Now, stand up," ShadowCatcher commanded.
Cuffee raised slowly but his head remained bowed.
“Before you go, I want to give you something.” ShadowCatcher reached inside his robe and a moment later, opened his hand to reveal a yellow, powdery substance. “This is for you,” he said, blowing the strange powder and spewing it in Cuffee's face.
Cuffee yelled in writhing pain as the powder slowly burned his eyes. Once the stinging had subsided, Cuffee entered a zombie-like state.
"Now go," ShadowCatcher ordered. "Go quickly before the others discover that you are missing.”
"Yes master," Cuffee droned.
Cuffee slipped away, quickly disappearing into the cave. Alone, ShadowCatcher raised his staff high above his head and and looking upwards as if to the heavens, said, “It’s time to take back what is rightfully mine!” A horrific laugh shook the earth.
To be continued …,

RICHIE SPICE – TOURING NORTH AMERICA AND CANADA - SEPTEMBER 2010
|
|
|
|
Richie Spice is now confirming shows for his western U.S. tour this September 2010. He is currently on a five week tour in Europe. His U.S. tour last September was a great success, consistently stirring up excitement and large crowds. There was a lot of interest and enthusiasm up and down. This year we hope for increased success since he delivered so well last year and he has so many hit songs playing out there.
Prior to the current tour, Richie Spice also did a two week European tour in March 2010. Over the years Richie has been consistently touring and performing in Europe. He is very popular there. He and his crew also recently finished touring Australia, and they are now one year into a two year plan to tour the entire Caribbean. They have a lot of new singles and combinations out, and the new CD is slated for release this summer.
Richie Spice is currently one of the hottest commodities worldwide in cultural reggae music, moving with a positive message and a full, strong entourage. Earth a Run Red, Richie Spice’s biggest hit, dominated the airwaves in a positive and conscious manner for many years. People are enthusiastic to hear this and his numerous other hits live. Richie Spice is a top new breed reggae artist and on this tour he will be moving with some of the finest musicians out of Jamaica.
In the Old Testament’s Book of Judges, Gideon led Israel to victory over the Midianites, who dwelled in the southeastern part of Palestine, with a small army equipped with only trumpets, lit torches and jars to conceal the torches’ flames. Following Gideon’s instructions, his three hundred soldiers blew their trumpets and smashed their jars as they shouted “a sword for the Lord, a sword for Gideon”. With that, the tens of thousands of Midianite troops fled in fear.
Armed with just a microphone, one-drop rhythms and purifying lyrical flames, singer Richie Spice is the Gideon of contemporary reggae. The publicly declared “prince of fire” uses culturally uplifting, spiritually fortified words to defeat the negative content that informs much of popular (Jamaican) music. Fittingly, Gideon Boot is the title track of Spice’s brilliant fourth album. Recorded over the timeless Johnny Too Bad rhythm (taken from The Slickers 1970s hit of the same name, popularized in the film The Harder They Come) the song details Spice’s strategic plan for delivering his musical sermon to an awaiting global audience. “I need a Gideon boot and a khaki suit to stand out inna Babylon and defend the truth/ I got a strong reggae beat with a mic in my hand fe lead out de youth dem outta destruction and let de people know right from wrong.”
Just like the singer’s previous albums “Universal”, “Spice In Your Life” and “In The Streets to Africa”, “Gideon Boot” contains inspiring messages specifically aimed at empowering vulnerable youth. Spice confidently juxtaposes his songs of valor with unity themes (“Living In Love”, “Getting Harder”) and the importance of staying focused - “Make Up Your Mind”, “Hang On In There”. Spice’s flawless vocals effortlessly scale the high notes then smoothly segue into scatted improvisations as he weaves intricate, evocative melodies throughout this exquisite 15-track set that is certain to carry his name to un chartered territories for Jamaican music.
The traditional Rastafarian Nyabinghi drumming that dominates the opening cut “Babylon Falling” heralds the seriousness of Spice’s musical mission. “World Is A Cycle”, sung over producer Arif Cooper’s haunting “Guardian Angel” rhythm, is, as Spice explains, “a song for the children and for the parents saying be careful because what you do can fall right back on you and your kids.”
Also included is the current Jamaican hit “The Plane Land” which display’s Spice’s superb story telling skills. The song’s lyrics detail the frustration that oftentimes accompanies post 9/11travel. “Saddle up myself fe take interrogation…tek off mi shoes, tek off mi tam, if they ever find you with a spliff yu gone another land.” “It is a song everyone can relate to if they travel,” notes Spice, “and if they don’t travel, they will learn this is what we go through as entertainers as we go to other countries.”
Since 2004, when his apocalyptic single “Earth A Run Red” became the year’s most popular reggae song, Richie Spice has performed throughout the world, insuring that cultural roots reggae isn’t relegated to a bygone era but continues as a thriving, evolving musical genre.
Born Richell Bonner in the Kingston, Jamaica suburb of St. Andrew, Richie Spice hails from a musical family that includes his older brother Pliers (from the deejay/singer duo Chaka Demus and Pliers of “Murder She Wrote” fame), singer Spanner Banner and deejay Snatcher Dogg. It was Spanner Banner, (best known for his mid 90s hit “Life Goes On”) who first brought Spice to the recording studio; the hopeful singer, admittedly, couldn’t manage the rigors of professional recording but the opportunity opened his eyes to the proficiency required to succeed in the reggae industry. “That experience show me that to reach anywhere there is a lot of work to be done,” Spice reflects.
Spice continued working towards gaining a foothold in the music industry and shortly thereafter he met veteran producer Clive Hunt who produced his breakthrough single, the engaging lovers rock tune “Grooving My Girl”, still one of the most popular songs in Spice’s repertoire. “Grooving” was initially featured on Spice’s 2000 debut album “Universal”, as was the song that would make him a household name in Jamaica, “Earth A Run Red”.
Since 2004 Spice has become one of reggae’s most in demand talents and the recipient of numerous awards and accolades. He received the Most Cultural Artist Award at the 13th annual South Florida Reggae Soca Awards in 2005; he was voted the Male Singer/Singjay of the Year at Jamaica’s IRIE FM Awards in 2007 and following his performance at the first annual “Black My Story” concert held in Kingston on Feb. 2, 2008 Spice was honored for his positive musical contributions. His 2004 album “Spice in Your Life” was listed among the year’s best reggae releases by the New York Times; “In the Streets To Africa”, released in 2007, reached number 6 on the Billboard Reggae chart and one of the album’s biggest hits “Youth Dem Cold” peaked at number 59 on the Billboard Top 100 Singles Chart and ranked at number 29 on Vibe Magazine’s Best 44 songs of 2007. Now with the release of “Gideon Boot” even greater recognition is assured for Spice’s talent, as is the expansion of his international fan base.
“I’ve always had a wide meditation of having my music go out there to the world because I know it can go far,” says Spice. “But it is very hard singing of righteousness in the world. When you sing of good you will find that evil rise up and try to dominate good. But I will continue the fight, go out there and have people hear what I am saying.”

SCANDINAVIAN REGGAE FESTIVAL – A FAMILY AFFAIR The Uppsala Reggae Festival is still a relatively recent established festival, but in just 10 years it has succeeded in making reggae music and reggae culture accessible to and loved by many Scandinavians. “We are celebrating our 10th anniversary on 5-7 August with a best-of-festival as well as new artistes under the festival theme of Life is Great,” says the Tekeste/Kubrom family, who are the driving force behind the festival. The Scandinavian love of reggae has matured greatly since the end of the 1970s when Bob Marley charmed the Scandinavian public with his music. The most significant development has happened during the last 10 years in conjunction with the Tekeste/Kubrom family establishing the Uppsala Reggae Festival, which is now the largest reggae festival in Scandinavia: “We love reggae music and devote all our energy and knowledge to making it more accessible to more people. That we have succeeded is due to our personal commitment and the way we work together as a family. People in northern Europe have a need to come together in new ways, so we work with the goal of highlighting what is positive about reggae and create festivals that focus on love, respect and a sense of belonging,” says Yared Tekeste who founded the Uppsala Reggae Festival together with his wife Adiam Kubrom in 2001.
As well as excellent reggae music the Uppsala Reggae Festival also offers other avenues of expression such as lyrics, food, fashion, art, design, dance etc. The theme of this year’s festival is “Life is Great” and this theme is inherent in everything from the choice of bands to the public activities such as the Wall Of Greatness, Reggae Soccer, Reggae Cinema, Reggae Kids Island, Life is Great Art, Life is Great Blog (www.lifeisgreat09.blogspot.com) etc. A wide spectrum of artistes will be performing at the festival, with all of the different aspects of the genre represented. Old school rubs shoulders with new school.
The legendary Abyssinians and Bunny Wailer represent ‘the foundation’, artistes essential for the development of the reggae enjoyed today. Alborosie represents the modern and concious reggae that has developed in Europe. Busy Signal represents Dancehall and One drop, forms of reggae that attract a younger audience.
Artistes confirmed for the Uppsala Reggae Festival 2010 on 5-7 August in Uppsala are: International artistes: Bunny Wailer (JAM), Abyssinians (JAM), Mavado (JAM), Busy Signal (JAM), Anthony B (JAM), Jah Cure (JAM), Gentleman & The Evolution (GER), Midnite (VI), Alborosie & The Shengen Clan (ITA), Peetah & Gramps Morgan (JAM), Misty In Roots (UK), Voicemail feat Alaine (JAM), Jahcoustix (GER) Stone Love (JAM), Roots Harmonics (DK), I Mosa (CL).

CHEF MAYRA - Smoothe’me Crazy BABE~
|
|
|
Chef Mayra Almond Banana Smoothie 1 banana (very ripe, frozen overnight if you can) 4-5 frozen strawberries large handful frozen blueberries 1/2 cup almond milk cinnamon to taste pumpkin pie spice to taste
Directions: Get a very ripe banana, peel it, and freeze it overnight. It will come out just as yummy with an unfrozen banana too, but i prefer mine frozen.
Add your strawberries, blueberries, almond milk and spices.
If you don't have pumpkin pie spice, basically all it is is allspice, nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger so you can add a little bit of each.
I usually just put in a quick shake of cinnamon and a quick shake of pumpkin pie spice.
If it's too thick you can add more almond milk so it will blend better.
You can also use fresh strawberries and blueberries instead of frozen but you may need to sweeten it a little. It's up to you! And that's it! Super simple, and it's got such a nice flavour!

It’s one of the most added records at multiple radio formats--Top 40, Hot AC and Alternative--and its music video has already exceeded 1 million views on YouTube. As for the CD, All Rebel Rockers marked Franti’s highest Billboard Top 200 Album Chart debut ever.
Through his entire musical career to date, Franti has continued to slowly but surely build an extremely dedicated global grass roots following. He’s done it with a new spin on an old fashioned way. He’s earned his fans, one winning concert at a time. Ultimately what unites Franti’s remarkable and impressive career is, ironically, the man’s ongoing search for harmony.
“As a musician and a man, I more than anything else want to be a unifier,” Franti explains. “I want to bring people together through music and its unique power. And I hope that somehow that sense of unity extends beyond the music.”
Flobots, who previously headlined their own show at the Knitting Factory Reno, are returning as direct support to Michael Franti and Spearhead. The Denver, Colorado-based musical collective are known for their battle-hardened, groove-fusing rhythm section, their classically-trained violist, and a sound that explores and expands the frontiers of live hip-hop. Influenced by progressive rappers such as the Roots and Common as well as alternative hard rock bands like Rage Against the Machine and Tool, Flobots are visionary in both style and message. The band’s ability to drop from symphonic rock-infused crescendos into stripped-down string-laden breakbeats has earned them a reputation for both originality and authenticity.

The reggae legend / king of dub provides solid follow up to recent Grammy-nominated albums
Preliminary tour dates announced
Megawave and MVD Audio are proud to announce the release of Lee "Scratch" Perry - Revelation for North American distribution on August 10, 2010.

Not only did he help develop the early reggae sound captured in a number of important recordings, but as an engineer, producer, songwriter, and performer he pioneered a number of innovations, including dub reggae.
Recorded at Perry's mountain-top studio in Switzerland and studios in California, New York, and England, this album features Duncan & Green, Tim Hill, Keith Richards, George Clinton, Dr Sleepy, Alec Hay, Steve Marshall, elodieO & Abi Browning, and David Stewart Jones.

USHER CONFIRMED FOR REGGAE SUMFEST 2010, JULY 17-24, 2010, ST JAMES
|
|
|
|
Jamaica’s premier summer music event Reggae Sumfest, is again living up to its reputation of delivering only the finest acts, by bringing one of the music industry’s most celebrated pop stars, Usher, to this year’s 18th staging.
The International R&B star has been confirmed as a performer to take the stage at the show which runs in Catherine Hall, St. James between July 17 and 24.
Usher will join a cast of fellow performing giants such as Chris Brown, Beenie Man, Shaggy, Bounty Killer, Mavado, Tarrus Riley, Queen Ifrica, Jah Cure among others.
Though not his first local performance, Usher has been on a phenomenal streak in recent times, with memorable music and electrifying performances. His latest album Raymond V. Raymond which was released on March 30 this year, debuted at number 1 on the US Billboard 200 charts. His latest single OMG featuring Will.I.Am is also currently blazing the airwaves, clubs and parties across the world.
This is only his latest crown in a career decorated with accomplishments. Usher has won 5 Grammy awards, 8 Soul Train Awards, and 19 Billboard Music Awards.
He made his musical debut in 1994 with the single Think of You but it was not until 1997 that Usher gained popularity with the hit song My Way. Since then, he has turned into a virtual hit-maker.
In 2001 Usher released the album 8701, which went four times platinum riding on the success of hit singles such as U Remind Me and U Got It Bad. In 2004 Confessions sold over 10 million copies in the US. It was ranked as grossing the highest sales in the first week for an R&B artiste in history. Subsequently, the album sold 20 million copies worldwide and was certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). In 2008, his album Here I Stand sold over 5 million copies worldwide and was certified platinum.
In addition to Usher’s recording feats, he is also known for his talent on the stage, and on the screen. Usher appeared in the 1998 film The Faculty and a year later She’s All That. As a Humanitarian, Usher founded New Look, a non-profit organization that seeks to give young people a ‘new look’ on life through the use of education and real life experiences as the incentive.
With a string of accolades and awards, there is no doubt Usher will add considerable value to an army of stars now billed for the greatest summer Festival in Jamaica.
Reggae Sumfest is the most celebrated and supported Reggae Festival in Jamaica, and attracts the world’s leading musicians and performers. In its near 20 year history, the show has boasted a superb entertainment package, loaded with the best performances, food, music, and culture. This year’s Festival runs from July 17-24 at Catherine Hall, St James.

TRENCH TOWN READING CENTRE,
|
|
|
|
The Centre was founded in 1993 from the desire to find a path forward out of the cycle of violence and lack of opportunity.
TrenchTown, like other ghetto areas, has been abandoned and avoided by both the public and private sectors of society.
The focus is on literacy; both adults and children learn to read and write with the lending library providing access to a fantastic range of books and information, for all ages, which would otherwise be far from the reach of the residents of Trench Town.
Aside from the literacy programs and summer school, the Centre also offers workshops in arts, drama and many other interesting and fun activities, all free of charge.
It is a place where all are welcome, a pleasant, safe and relaxed environment where the community can hold its activities.
TrenchTown is a neighbourhood struggling to be strong and safe, working together, trying to move forward, away from the violence and despair.
The Centre has become the cornerstone for positive growth in the community.
TTRC is a NGO and relies on donations to finance all aspects of maintenance and running.
This year, as you well know, Rototom Sunsplash is coming to Spain and so I’m organizing a stand for the TTRC in the non-profit area. Roslyn Ellison, co-founder/director of the Centre is coming over from Jamaica to help me and we are getting together an interesting crew of people to work with us and promote the centre.

TOUSSAINT PROTECTOR OF SOUL MUSIC, DEFENDER OF ROOTS:

|
|
With a husky tenor that is the epitome of soul, and with musical influences that range from roots reggae to gospel to neosoul to hip hop, Toussaint carries a sound that is true to his nickname, “the Liberator”. His music is liberated from any boundaries in form or name. Yet Toussaint remains firmly grounded by his foundational pillars of soul and roots. As a “soul roots” singer unlike any other, and with an epic debut album on tap, Toussaint is poised to break new ground worldwide.
Toussaint began his musical journey where most of the celebrated soul voices of the past began: in the church. The son of a Baptist preacher and a gospel singer, Toussaint spent the majority of his youth singing in various churches in and around his home state of Indiana. Following a relocation to Boston in 2001, he began to sing with a wide range of groups where he learned to jump easily from the blues, to old-school R&B, to funk, to reggae.
In 2006, the word of Toussaint’s vocal prowesses and songwriting spread to the ears of the soul/funk trio, Soulive, who invited him to join the band as their lead singer. Toussaint penned all of the lyrics for the acclaimed group’s album, No Place Like Soul, released on the newly revived Stax label. Touring the world and performing at legendary venues across the world for nearly two years, Toussaint was able to share the stage with renowned artists such as Isaac Hayes, the Rolling Stones, John Legend and the Dave Matthews Band.
Toussaint’s stage performance, vocal strength and songwriting reached new heights during his tenure with Soulive.
After taking a break from the music scene in 2008, Toussaint has returned in full force, bringing his original soul reggae music to audiences in the northeast with the bands Buru Style and the Trama Unit.
2010 finds Toussaint poised for another swell in the storyline of his career. Connecting with St. Croix-based I Grade Records – the label behind several notable reggae releases by Midnite, Dezarie, NiyoRah & others – Toussaint has recorded an epic album of original soul-drenched, genre-defying roots music: Roots in a Modern Time. Slated for a Summer 2010 release, the album’s first single, “Be You”, is already ringing through the airwaves worldwide, with a video filmed on location in St. Croix. Keep your eyes open for what comes next.

PRAISE HIS NAME LYRICS
Prayer To my creator
I will praise the Lord at all times
His praise will always be on my lips
My soul will boast in the Lord
Glorify the Lord with me
And let us exalt his name together
Verse 1
Before I close my eyes I give him thanks
And when I rise I give him praise
He is the source of my energy, source of my peace
So many times I lift my hands to him and say thank you
So many times I feel him next to me, I
Chorus
So I raise his name, up high
I praise him, Everyday
I will praise his name, yes I
I praise him, Everyday
Verse 2
I won’t wait until my back is against the wall, before I call
He’s always there to catch me when I fall, and when it gets hard, he’s there
He is there to keep me safe and keep me warm, when life gets cold
He is there to shelter me when I am alone
Chorus
Verse 3
So in my going out and in my coming in
We have to give praise to one who died for we sins
No matter what the time, place or what it is
He’s always there to grant me my wishes
Father God, him understand all problems
Just put it to him and trust me he will solve them
‘Cause he is the giver of life
He will make sure everything’s all right
Verse 4
For God so loved the world, he gave his only son
That whosever believed, shall live forever more
And you, and me, shall live eternally
And you, and me, shall live happy and free
Chorus
