REGGAE ON THE RIVER THIS WEEKEND!
What: 26th annual Reggae On The River
Where: Benbow Lake State Recreation Area (Benbow, CA)
When: Saturday & Sunday, July 17-18, 2010
Why: Internationally renowned celebration of reggae & world music!

For immediate release:

It is with heavy hearts that we share with you the news of the passing of one of reggae music’s true legends and one of Reggae On The River’s headlining artists, Sugar Minott.  He passed away suddenly in Jamaica on Saturday, July 10, just before he had planned on embarking on a US tour highlighted by a performance at Reggae On The River. This is a great loss for Jamaica and the international reggae community and our hearts go out to all his friends, family, and fans.

Minott was known for nurturing young talent with his own Black Roots record label and Youthman Promotion company. Reggae and dancehall artists such as Junior Reid and Tenor Saw began their careers under his tutelage.  "Sugar Minott was a man who gave a lot of strength to the music” Reid said.  A new album from Minott, "New Day," is scheduled to be released in coming weeks. As a tribute to his ever-lasting musical legacy, the 26th annual Reggae On The River will be dedicated in his honor.  On Sunday there will be an all-star tribute to Sugar Minott lead by Don Carlos and friends. May you Rest in Peace Sugar. You will be missed by all.

Understandably, Sugar’s daughter, Fire Pashon, will also not be performing at the festival.  Due to this unforeseeable change of events, the Mateel Community Center will now welcome a champion in the new roots and reality consciousness reggae movement, Prezident Brown, along with a warm up set by Cali favorites, Reggae Angels.  Please check the artist page at www.reggaeontheriover.com for the revised festival line-up on Sunday, July 18.

Prezident Brown entertains, informs and inspires. His message is pure rasta conscious vibes. A distinct and powerful stage presence, a Prezident Brown show is a transcendant spiritual movement that leaves audiences satiated, sweaty and smiling. Born in the hills of Jamaica, he rose through the ranks of the Hi Fi Sound System era in Ocho Rios. He traveled the world as resident MC of Jack Ruby’s infamous Hi Power Sound System. The Prez is featured on Steel Pulse' "Black and Proud", and has released critically acclaimed works of his own. But for now, the Prezident focuses on the power of his live performance to convey, uplift and spiritualize. Says the Prez, "The current state of I-man career is in the 'live' field right now. Yeah, cause you can fire up a CD but what you cannot fire up is the live vibe of Prezident Brown, so I stay with the live for now".

Tickets are still available but are going fast.  It is strongly encouraged you buy your tickets in advance at www.reggaeontheriver.com as this event is likely to sell out.  The 2-day festival pass is $85 in advance and single day tickets are $50.  Admission at the gate, if available, will be $90 for the 2-day pass or $55 per day.

Festival camping is still also available at Cook’s Valley Campground and reservations can be made via the camping link at www.reggaeontheriver.com.

THE 34rd EPISODE OF NICHOLAS Da SILVA'S GRAPHIC NOVEL SERIES 'DREAD AND ALIVE' FEATURING DREW MCINTOSH: JAMAICAN SUPER HERO
Dread & Alive....is an ongoing graphic novel series about Jamaican Super Hero Drew McIntosh. If you missed any episodes, click here to read:

"There you are."  Maria smiled and handed the bowl of porridge to her son.
Staring at the yellow, mushy contents in the bowl, Drew swallowed hard while making several facial contortions that expressed his dislike for what he saw.
Maria chuckled. "Don’t worry.  It taste better than it looks."
Again, staring into the bowl of porridge, Drew slowly picked up the wooden spoon, filled it with the gooey substance, and brought the spoon to his mouth. He paused.  Closing his eyes, he placed the spoon slowly in his mouth ... and shivered.  Some of the porridge smeared his cheeks.  He swallowed hard, then glanced at Maria.
            "Where’s dad?" he asked.
Maria crouched and wiped the loose porridge from the side of Drew's mouth. "He’s in the forest with some of the hunters. They are looking for food."
A tight-lipped Drew nodded his head, then continued. "When do we go home?"
His question caught Maria by surprise. "I’m afraid not anytime soon." She put her hands on his shoulders. "For now, this village will be our home.  At least until your father’s work is done here ... and I don’t know when that will be.”
Maria looked over at the other children and sighed. "Why don’t you finish your meal so you can play with the other children. I’m going to help Juba and the others in the field today." She stopped and looked at him questioningly. “You going to be alright?"
Drew nodded, then forced himself to return to the job of finishing his porridge.
Maria kissed him on his forehead, then stood up and slowly walked away. Drew continued to eat, taking down several spoonfuls before looking up at his mother.  He stared at her for long time, watching until she disappeared in the distance.
Leaving Drew to get to know the other children of the village, Maria rejoined Juba in the fields. Today, the women were going to clear a section of the forest for harvesting.

TRIAL DATE SET FOR REGGAE`S BOUNTY KILLER
CaribWorldNews, KINGSTON, Jamaica, Weds. July 14, 2010: A trial date has been set for Jamaican dancehall star, Bounty Killer, who is fighting firearm and wounding charges.

Bounty, born Rodney Pryce, is set to stand trial in the Gun Court in Kingston on October 20th. The singer, who became popular internationally for his collaboration with the group No Doubt, is charged along with former police constable Collis Bowen.

According to Jamaica Gleaner reports, the men were charged last year in connection with a September 27, 2007 incident that included an off-duty policeman at a club on St Lucia Avenue in New Kingston.

The policeman is said to have tried to get the men to move several vehicles outside the club but was reportedly assaulted and fired at.

VERMONT REGGAE FESTIVAL RETURNS
The Vermont Reggae Festival, one  of the more popular events of its kind in the United States during the  1980s and 1990s, returns in August after a 10-year break.

The  legendary Lee 'Scratch' Perry will headline the show which takes place  August 13-15 in the town of Johnson.

Singer Colin 'Iley' Dread and the Massive B sound system out of New York City  (featuring Big Apple reggae veterans Bobby Konders and Jabbba) are also  on the show.

There was some opposition to the show's return by  locals, who cited potential unruly behaviour by attendees. Organisers  met with town officials and residents last week and assured them of an  incident-free event.

The Vermont Reggae Festival emerged during  the 1980s when demand for live music out of Jamaica was at its  peak. Some of the biggest names in roots reggae, including the Wailing  Soul and Culture, performed at the event.

INAUGURAL RASTAFARI STUDIES CONFERENCE, JAMAICA

7/07/2010 The University of the West Indies, Mona, announces the Inaugural Rastafari Studies Conference under the theme “Negotiating the African Presence: Rastafari Livity and Scholarship”, to take place on the Mona Campus from August 17-20, 2010. The conference, organized under the auspices of the Institute of Caribbean Studies in the Faculty of Humanities and Education and the Office of the Principal, is earmarked to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Report on the Rastafari Movement in Kingston, Jamaica (1960) researched and written by M.G. Smith, Roy Augier and Rex Nettleford and published by the then Institute of Social and Economic Research (now Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies). The Report marked a turning point in the relations between the Rastafari and the wider Jamaican society, paving the way for a better understanding and accommodation.

Originally planned in partnership with the Ethio-Africa Diaspora Union Millennium Council (Millennium Council) of the Rastafari, the conference is now an entirely UWI initiative, following the regrettable withdrawal of the Millennium Council from the collaboration. Following the opening by Professor Sir Roy Augier on the evening of August 17, one hundred and twenty scholars, artists and elders will present and discuss papers in over forty panels, plenaries, exhibitions and film screenings, covering a full range of academic and experiential inquiry around the Rastafari movement in the Jamaican, Caribbean and global contexts. Students, scholars, journalists and members of the general public are all welcome to this important event. For more information please contact the conference secretariat at rastafaristudies2010@yahoo.com. All Rebel Rockers, Michael Franti’s most recent album, features the legendary production team of Sly & Robbie and reinforces Franti’s place as a global force and a true musician of his time. The first single, “Say Hey (I Love You)” is fast becoming one of the biggest of Franti’s career. It’s one of the most added records at multiple radio formats--Top 40, Hot AC and Alternative--and its music video has already exceeded 1 million views on YouTube. As for the CD, All Rebel Rockers marked Franti’s highest Billboard Top 200 Album Chart debut ever.

Through his entire musical career to date, Franti has continued to slowly but surely build an extremely dedicated global grass roots following. He’s done it with a new spin on an old fashioned way. He’s earned his fans, one winning concert at a time. Ultimately what unites Franti’s remarkable and impressive career is, ironically, the man’s ongoing search for harmony.
“As a musician and a man, I more than anything else want to be a unifier,” Franti explains. “I want to bring people together through music and its unique power. And I hope that somehow that sense of unity extends beyond the music.”

Flobots, who previously headlined their own show at the Knitting Factory Reno, are returning as direct support to Michael Franti and Spearhead.  The Denver, Colorado-based musical collective are known for their battle-hardened, groove-fusing rhythm section, their classically-trained violist, and a sound that explores and expands the frontiers of live hip-hop.  Influenced by progressive rappers such as the Roots and Common as well as alternative hard rock bands like Rage Against the Machine and Tool, Flobots are visionary in both style and message.  The band’s ability to drop from symphonic rock-infused crescendos into stripped-down string-laden breakbeats has earned them a reputation for both originality and authenticity.

THE JAMAICAN REGGAE SINGER SUGAR MINOTT PASSES AWAY
By harry68

Sugar Minott passed away on July 11, 2010, at the age of 54. The cause of death is being said to be Aginia Pectoris that he was suffering from.

Sugar Minott, whose real name was Lincoln Barrington Minott, was born on May 25th, 1956. He was a Jamaican reggae singer, producer and sound-system operator. Sugar was well known for his work and talent. He formed his own label "Black Roots" in the 1980s and his Youth Promotion organization helped develop new talents.

Sugar Minott released several successful albums which gained a lot of popularity. "Dancehall Showcase" and "Herbman Hustling" are Sugar's two very notable albums. He worked on "Easy Squeeze" and "Hidden Treasures" in late 90s.

Talking about Sugar Minott's albums, his works speak volumes about his talent. Sugar was able to come up with more than 35 solo albums in his career which is a huge accomplishment. God Bless Sugar's soul.

Mackie Conscious
It is confirmed that Montego Bay's number one son Mackie Conscious will be performing on the International night 2 line-up on July 24th at this year's Jamaica Reggae Sumfest. It's refreshing to see that Jamaica is utilizing it's homegrown talent, as I hear all the time from fans globally "what happen to roots reggae in Jamaica"?. It appears more and more the sumfest is turning into a Hip/Hop, Soul and R & B fest.

That is very disappointing to many. Jamaica being the reggae capable of the world. It seems more and more that you are finding more Roots and Culture performances in Europe and less in Jamaica (the mother land of reggae).

When the line-up first appeared, it looked to all appearances as the who, who's in hip Hop. With that being said, we were elated to see the artist who put the "R" in roots and the "C" in conscious appear on the roster Mackie Conscious. Fans Internationally you can rest for sure; if you are coming down to Jamaica for roots and conscious sounds, you will most definitely get what you bargain for with a Mackie Conscious performance. Now, if Sumfest history repeats itself, he will probably be given an early slot, so be sure to get there early and tune in to what "Jamaican Conscious Reggae" is all about "conscious messages in the music"; this and then some is what Mackie Conscious has proven time and time again he is capable of delivering!!!

You however have to be there and witness yourself. I personally guarantee it. - Queen Mushiya http://reggaesumfest.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=396&Itemid=112 Mackie Conscious contact info:

QUEEN MUSHIYA REMEMBERS  LINCOLN "SUGAR" MINOTT - MAY 25, 1956 - JULY 10, 2010

Sunday, July 11, 2010 8:50 AM My night started out nice attended two fine concerts in Dallas Saturday I was on a musical high. And then my world came to a screaming halt with messages on my phone and texts from Carmelita (Irie Vision TV) and soon after family and others in California notifying me of Sugar Minott's death. Apparently Carmelita tried to call me while I was attending the Dallas Reggae Festival; regretfully I did not check my messages on my way to the other concert. It was 4:30 am when I had the opportunity to check my messages and heard the earth changing news.

I cannot say a passing affecting me so, since the day we lost Mikey; as it was through Mikey that I met Sugar Minott, Mikey had produced alot of Sugar's earlier recordings while he was at JBC in Jamaica. Funny thing when I first started my show Reggae Solutiions. I would always say before I played Sugar's song "Not for Sale".. I always loved a little "Sugar" in my tea..too many times I had been meaning to call and have Sugar come on the show. However travel and time got away from me.

Sugar in all his glory will always be the voice of "lovers Rock" as no one could touch his pitch as he brought you into his world with songs such as " I'm not for sale","The more we are together", "Give my love to you", "Conscious Lover", " Half a love" (my favorite) and "tears you cry"' he was also a heavy hitter with songs such as "Watch your back"' (this song we all play when we are vexed by wolf in sheep clothing in our mix).

Sugar also made you think about it when he sung "Mind blowing decisions", "King of King" and Mr. Fisherman". Sugar Minott literally had a "sweet voice"' however no matter what the message in the song was he would make it work. And all I can remember now is how I am honored to have crossed his path in life, talk with him and laugh with him over the years in my travel with Mikey Dread ...They were two of a kind together; very high strung and lovable Jamaican men (smile), if you had a chance to spend even a minute with him it would be memorable. (smile) Sometimes I would have to act as referee between the two (smile).

Mikey and Sugar went way back; as Mikey was one of the first producers for Sugar, this helped jump start his career in Reggae. All I could remember was how nice it was to sit and listen to them talk and laugh about old times.

I once been naïve asked sugar "why they call you sugar"? he said to me are you for real, you don't know and laughed. (smile). All those flood of sweet memories hit me like a thunderstorm this morning as I spoke with Carmelita, The Scientist, Lady Cham, Leon (Mikey's brother) and others. This is surely another strong blow to our Reggae fraternity, my heart is literally broken in two, his presence will surely be missed, but in my heart forever he will live. I know in my heart of hearts, just like when Mikey passed. He will be met at Zion's gate by our brothers before him and be welcomed to a new beginning - an Eternal gig with Mikey Dread, Peter Tosh, Joseph Hill, Bob Marley, Lucky Dube and others. My heart is truly broken today, condolences to his family, friends and fans. Queen Mushiya I will always love u through eternity. From the words of Mark Wonder - "Jah will see us through children, all our worries and problems he will solve them". Trust in the guidance of JAH!

The fusion of the two cultures creates a dancehall album with hip hop beats, which at times, mix together and include a dash of alternative.

GoldenChyld has a gift of arranging and writing songs. His high energy debut album – “A New Dynasty” - is one that has Universal appeal.  The first single “Cloak & Dagger” into the mind of a hustler and focuses on the gritty street life and what will forever be a longstanding issue in Jamaica and overseas.
With the debut of this album, GoldenChyld has been attracting keen interest from labels in both Jamaica and North America.  Having spent much time in the studio writing, producing and perfecting songs, he is now ready to let his sound be heard. He will embark on a publicity tour with various appearances and performances set to occur in Jamaica, Canada and the United States.  Tour dates and venues will be announced soon.
