IRIE JAMBOREE NOT JAMMING IN NEW YORK THIS LABOR DAY WEEKEND
Irie Jamboree Executive team – front(L-R) Bobby Clarke, Louis Grant, Steven Williams and Michael Williams

Queens, NY: Irie Jamboree, North America’s premier reggae festival will not be held this year. The executive team made the agonizing decision to forgo the seventh annual staging this year. We will instead focus our resources on planning for the 2011 festival on Labor Day Sunday and promise another spectacular, exciting presentation then.

To set the record straight about why this beloved annual concert was forced into hiatus this year, we list 5 reasons that are the cold facts.
The Recession
There’s a well known adage in the Caribbean that “if America sneezes, the Caribbean gets a cold”. This has never been more severely evidenced than over the past few years as the economic recession being experienced by the U.S. economy has had a grueling disproportionate effect on the diaspora Caribbean community. The average Caribbean family has seen an average 20% to 30% decrease in household income when compared to last year, this according to New York State’s most recent unemployment data. As families strive to meet their basic needs, oftentimes under conditions of lost or reduced income, “disposable income” is slowly becoming an extinct concept. Families face the challenge of striving for economic survival in this insecure economy, while still facing the added burden of having to contribute support to family members back home who are also struggling to make ends meet. Where possible, saving for an unsure future is the prevailing mindset of most Caribbean households of the day. The sensitivity of these issues is not lost to us the organizers of Irie Jamboree, on having examined the possibility of reducing the entrance charge for the event we recognize that we would be unable to host the event without absorbing a significant deficit in 2010. Our access charges policy over the past 7 years has always dictated that we endeavor to keep admission to the concert at minimum cost to patrons.

Artists visa cancellation/incarceration
To restate the obvious, while Reggae is an entire philosophy, the heart of reggae is the music; the soul of reggae is that of the artists’ expressions. Reggae artists whose inspiring performances are usually at the core of any successful festival, have been affected by a number of well-publicized events that will hinder the delivery of an event that meets the usual high standards of an Irie Jamboree type, and the equally lofty inherent expectations of its concert goers. Primary among these are visa revocations and artistes incarcerations. Buju Banton- Incarcerated; Beenie Man-No Visa; Bounty Killer-No Visa; Busy Signal-No Visa; Movado-No Visa; Vybz Kartel-No Visa; Ninjaman- Incarcerated; Jah Cure-No Visa; Sizzla-No Visa and Luciano-No Visa.

Labor Day weekend is at the height of the NYC tourist season. Recreational and entertainment events during this period, including the staging of Irie Jamboree, positively impact the economy by generating millions in revenue for the city as thousands of people flock to the area to experience the best of Caribbean culture. The apparent (albeit debatable) absence of true regard for the contribution of the Caribbean Community to the economy by U.S. governing authorities is a matter of grave concern to the community at large. As a group, the Caribbean business community has been vocal about the visa/travel issue. This is a serious matter that we will continue to actively advocate through appropriate avenues as we invite discussions with the relevant authorities in order to ascertain conditions of the visa revocation process and opportunities for possibly reinstating travel privileges. This situation is becoming more dire and needs to be properly addressed so that fair and prompt resolution can be hopefully achieved. Meanwhile, we the organizers of Irie Jamboree continue to hold artistes to account for upholding a moral and ethical compass that will ensure standards of behavior that are respectful and compliant with the laws of varied governing jurisdictions.

The 8pm Shutdown
Irie Jamboree is staged at the Roy Wilkins Park in Queens. The New York City mayor’s office through the 113th precinct in Queens, has issued orders for events in area parks to be concluded by 8pm (EST).

This puts tremendous pressure on particular promoters. The event is generally scheduled to end at 10pm. It is unreasonable to expect the team of professionals who plan and organize the concert, and whose resources are already strained to terminate the show at 10pm even under the best of circumstances. This 8pm cut off equates to nothing short of production suicide. Additionally, to limit performances in order to meet this timeline represents a gross disservice to patrons and artists alike of the event, and significantly affects a critical subscribing feature that has been created for Irie Jamboree, the reputable “brand” by which it is now widely known and respected.

The overall climate in the Industry
Overall, the reggae industry is at an all time low. The music seems to have become relatively stagnant. Those promoters (particularly in the North-east) who have ventured to host outdoor events these past 2 years have reported significant losses due primarily to unprecedented low attendance numbers. Amongst other salient reasons, not unlike what Jamaica’s Usain Bolt did for the sport of track & field, the music industry needs to be potently re-energized; an adrenalin shot of sorts. Irie Jamboree is one of the many casualties of the arguably recent lull in the music, and by extension the industry at large that breathes life into it.

Other Variables
Irie Jamboree is produced as a collaborative effort together with valued partners whose sponsorship support is critical to its successful staging each year. Staging the number one reggae concert in the Northeast USA is amongst other things a very costly undertaking. All (not a few) but ALL traditional corporate sponsors of these type events have at best, dramatically slashed their marketing budgets, if not totally eliminating them. Irie Jamboree has not been spared the ravages of these budgetary realignments, not the least of which has been the recent acquisition of Air Jamaica by Caribbean Airlines which has resulted in the loss of one of the event’s greatest allies.

Recent upheaval in Western Kingston borne of the events surrounding the extradition of Christopher “Dudus” Coke to the United States is an international incident that has had a plethora of adverse ripple effects throughout the Diaspora, and implications across economies, from which very few have emerged unscathed.
Suffice it to say that this has deemed this 2010 as being a less than opportune year for the concert promoting business. That said, we remain confident that Irie Jamboree 2011 will continue the trend in being the best, and most celebrated reggae concert in North America.

As we make plans for the 2011 staging of Irie Jamboree, we are hopeful that the Government of Jamaica will see the need to allocate a portion of the US$10 million for Jamaican festivals in the Diaspora. This money we are told is earmarked for the tourism sector to be used to improve Jamaica’s image in the post “Dudus” disaster. Fact is that international festivals like Irie Jamboree has opportunities for valuable public relations exposure for Jamaica. The festival boast a solid track record of quality production and enjoys popular support in the community. Like the Jamaica Jazz & Blues festival that received US$40,000 a few years ago from the JTB, Irie Jamboree is well positioned and can continue to help to promote Jamaica’s music and culture. The success and longevity of this festival will go a long way in helping to repair Jamaica’s tarnished image in New York, regard as the media capital of the world.

We at Irie Jamboree wish to extend a heartfelt thank you to all our devoted patrons; tireless staff; reliable vendors; committed sponsors, partners and investors; members of the media fraternity, New York’s finest – the NYPD; our loving families and friends; and all others who have been associated with this world class concert over the past seven years here in New York City. Your support is what has sustained and motivated us to keep presenting our beloved music, and the true virtues of our culture at the highest level. We remain committed to bringing you a show that you deserve, and of which you can always be proud.
God bless.

Sincerely,
IRIE JAMBOREE INC. EXECUTIVE TEAM

THE 35th EPISODE OF NICHOLAS Da SILVA'S GRAPHIC NOVEL SERIES 'DREAD AND ALIVE' FEATURING DREW MCINTOSH: JAMAICAN SUPER HERO
Dread & Alive....is an ongoing graphic novel series about Jamaican Super Hero Drew McIntosh. If you missed any episodes, click here to read:

"There you are."  Maria smiled and handed the bowl of porridge to her son.
Staring at the yellow, mushy contents in the bowl, Drew swallowed hard while making several facial contortions that expressed his dislike for what he saw.
Maria chuckled. "Don’t worry.  It taste better than it looks."
Again, staring into the bowl of porridge, Drew slowly picked up the wooden spoon, filled it with the gooey substance, and brought the spoon to his mouth. He paused.  Closing his eyes, he placed the spoon slowly in his mouth ... and shivered.  Some of the porridge smeared his cheeks.  He swallowed hard, then glanced at Maria.
            "Where’s dad?" he asked.
Maria crouched and wiped the loose porridge from the side of Drew's mouth. "He’s in the forest with some of the hunters. They are looking for food."
A tight-lipped Drew nodded his head, then continued. "When do we go home?"
His question caught Maria by surprise. "I’m afraid not anytime soon." She put her hands on his shoulders. "For now, this village will be our home.  At least until your father’s work is done here ... and I don’t know when that will be.”
Maria looked over at the other children and sighed. "Why don’t you finish your meal so you can play with the other children. I’m going to help Juba and the others in the field today." She stopped and looked at him questioningly. “You going to be alright?"
Drew nodded, then forced himself to return to the job of finishing his porridge.
Maria kissed him on his forehead, then stood up and slowly walked away. Drew continued to eat, taking down several spoonfuls before looking up at his mother.  He stared at her for long time, watching until she disappeared in the distance.
Leaving Drew to get to know the other children of the village, Maria rejoined Juba in the fields. Today, the women were going to clear a section of the forest for harvesting.

WANDERLUST: MUSIC, YOGA MORE!

Irish and Chin Salutes Sugar Minott With Unreleased Footage From 2009's Reeewind

Death is the bitter sweet gift of life. We all know it's coming, although for most it appears unannounced. The irony of it all is that we spend a life time preparing to see the gates of Zion, yet our departure is very rarely celebrated with joy. I (Garfield "Chin" Bourne) was not a personal friend of Sugar Minott but a huge fan of his music and unlimited contributions to the early stages of the dancehall and sound system culture. So, celebrating Sugar's life may be a little bit easier for me to do than those who were the closest to him.

I refuse to be saddened and want to enjoy Sugar's life through the works of art he has left behind. With more than 60 albums and tons of timeless hits like "Mr. DC," "Herbsman Hustling," "Vanity," "Never Gonna Give up Jah," "Good Thing Going" and so many others, Sugar Minott has a catalogue that rivals some of Jamaica's top stars. Not only do we have Sugar's music to live through, we have the careers of the many artists he either influenced or discovered. My dearest memory of Sugar Minott will undoubtly be his performance at "REEEWIND" last year.

Sugar was not billed for the show.  In fact, he just happened to be in town and called us for some passes for the event.  At the time, we were under pressure because Luciano was denied entry to the United States just before the show.  Hearing Sugar's voice on the line was like a breath of fresh air. Irish's father and Sugar went way back. So, Irish worked out the business end of it and we booked him for the show. Sugar Minott's performance at the show was nothing short of flawless.  Our last minute added guest literally brought the house down with his hits. The crowd was amazed!! Sugar Minott was the talk in the streets for weeks and he was so humble. He just loved doing his thing!

They just don't make singers like Sugar Minott anymore!  Today, it's all about the money and very little talent. Although this great hero, better yet "Godfather of Dancehall Music," has passed on, he will leave behind an impeccable legacy and great ethics.  Many of today's artists still have a lot to learn.

The passing of Sugar Minott makes me wonder what the future of Reggae music will be like. To view Irish and Chin's tribute to Sugar Minott, which includes snippets of his stellar performance at "Reeewind" in October 2009 (his last big show), click here or on the photo.  Rest in Peace Sugar Minott.  You may be gone but will never be forgotten!

KARTEL WANTS COMPENSATION -LAWYERS LOOK TO RECOVER THE MILLIONS OF DOLLARS THE DANCEHALL STAR LOST WHILE IN POLICE DETENTION
Philip Hamilton, Gleaner Writer

Lawyers representing dancehall star Vybz Kartel are heading to court to seek compensation from the State for his detention.

Kartel, whose correct name is Adijah Palmer, spent a little more than two weeks in custody after he was detained under the state of emergency.

But attorney-at-law, Valerie Neita-Robertson, believes the State overstepped its bounds and she wants compensation for the artiste, who was finally released by the police about 7:30 p.m. last Friday.

According to Neita-Robertson, National Security Minister Dwight Nelson had signed an order on Tuesday, July 13, authorising the release of Kartel.

She told The Sunday Gleaner that her client's prolonged detention resulted in him losing several contracts, including a show he was booked to perform in in Nassau, Bahamas, yesterday.

No respect

"They do not respect or regard authority. They have no respect for anybody, and this has to stop," said Neita-Robertson.

"From what was told to me, utterances were made to certain media personnel by police officers that they were not releasing him until today (Saturday). I would draw a conclusion from that they didn't want him to meet this engagement," Neita-Robertson said

She alleged that the detention order which her client was served did not state a reason as to why he was being detained.

The attorney said while the police's interview with Kartel was very cordial, there was no specific offence which the police sought to question him about.

"When an order is given under the law, then the law must have its course. Police cannot just decide that they are not doing what they are supposed to do and we sit back and accept it," an obviously upset Neita-Robertson told The Sunday Gleaner.

"We want to cooperate and want crime to go down, but we will not put up with slackness."

Neita-Robertson charged that Kartel was not the only person who had been kept in police custody after the national security minister signed their release order.

She said several other persons, including women, were being illegally held by the police despite the order for their release.

The attorney said she had also been informed by the national security minister that one of her clients was to be released and placed under house arrest on the recommendation of the Emergency Powers Review Tribunal.

"That was days ago, and it has not been carried out," said Neita-Robertson.

As one of dancehall's hottest acts around now, particularly with his hit Clarkes enjoying heavy rotation, Kartel demands, and is guaranteed, top dollar for each show.

Last week, his publicist, Claude Mills, said due to his incarceration, two shows in the Caribbean were postponed. The shows were scheduled to be held in The Bahamas and Trinidad on July 17 and 24, respectively.

He also missed Tidal Wave, which was held at Waves Beach in Portmore, St Catherine, one week ago, leaving his bank book millions of dollars lighter.

V.I.’S BAMBÚ STATION SOUTH AMERICA TOUR A HUGE SUCCESS!
Greeted by enormous audiences throughout the country, the Virgin Islands’ reggae band, Bambú Station recently completed its first tour of South America with its show in Belém.

The band performed 9 concerts in 8 cities throughout Brasil from May 5th to May 23rd and performed to sold out audiences, near sold out audiences and audiences that were simply ecstatic to see the band live and in person.

With the Portuguese speaking fans singing along, the band performed many songs from their popular albums and showcased a few from their upcoming release, “Children of Exodus.” Regardless of what album they played from, the band performed until their last scheduled second on stage giving everything of themselves. Every single show ended with a huge request for an encore or two. Even after their lengthy performances, members of the band availed themselves to the throngs of fans that wanted to take pictures, get autographs or simply say “thank you.”
Said lead singer Jalani Horton, “when someone watches your performance and looks you in your eyes and say ‘thank you,’ the reality of your words, deeds and music take hold. Music is a real exchange of culture, feelings and ideas for sure and our lives are blessed to live with such purpose.”

On Saturday, May 22, a show with Julian Marley, the band invited one of Brasil’s great singer/songwriters to share the stage with them, lead singer of Mato Seco, Rodrigo Piccolo who expressed his passion for the band and the music they represent as the band performed “Bird’s I View” in the background. During the tour, Mato Seco and Bambú Station also performed 3 great shows together which all ended around 6am in the morning!
A recording project is now being planned bringing both bands together in the studio to further unite the activist spirit they both share and the heavy roots music they both play.

Bambú Station has headed back home to the Virgin Islands to complete work on its new album which is scheduled for release in Fall 2010.

THE “SEXY RASTA” GYPTIAN IS BACK. HIS NEW ALBUM HOLD YOU RELEASES JULY 20
Gyptianis currently at the forefront of Reggae music. He gained popularity amongst Reggae fans with his previous releases. His new album Hold Yourepresents his growth as an artist.

Gyptian'snew album Hold You releases on July 20. It contains 15 tracks and 2 iTunes exclusive tracks. This album introduces the World to the new era of Sexy Reggae Music. The melodic opening coupled with Gyptian's gentle vocals on Prelude (To Be Held) sets the perfect mood to start off the album. Gyptian dedicates this album to ladies across the globe. Included is the up-tempo and romantic track Beautiful Lady from his debut album. This song displayed Gyptian's potential as the Casanova of Reggae Music and it's fitting that it was added to Hold You. From Call Gyptian,Where You Belong and Rendezvous, Hold You delivers classic Lovers Rock and Dancehall tunes. The smash hit that has been dominating airwaves worldwide and setting the stage for Gyptian to be the next star in Reggae music is the catchy title track “Hold You. The next single that's slated topropel him further as a mainstream success is “Nah Let Go.” Gyptian proves that he is a master at creating memorable lyrics. One listen to the track and you will not forget it. Gyptian opens the door to his heart and lets everyone in on this album. “So Much In Love” and “Drive Me Crazy” expresses his passion for the opposite sex and what motivates his life-force. Gyptian is sexiness personified and his muse is the love he has for women. The album closes with the heartfelt dedication track “Selah.”This album places Gyptian into a category of his own and presents the future of Reggae Music.

Born Windel Beneto Edwards on October 25, 1983, Gyptian was raised in the rural King Weston district in the parish of St. Andrew by his Christian mother Pauline and his Rastafarian father, Basil. Neither parent dictated their son's spiritual path but both encouraged his musical talent; thus Gyptian, who earned his nickname because he often wrapped shirts around his head in the style of an Egyptian pharaoh, sang at his mother's Sunday morning church services and at the Saturday night dances promoted by his father who owned the Sugar Stone sound system.

All Rebel Rockers, Michael Franti’s most recent album, features the legendary production team of Sly & Robbie and reinforces Franti’s place as a global force and a true musician of his time. The first single, “Say Hey (I Love You)” is fast becoming one of the biggest of Franti’s career. It’s one of the most added records at multiple radio formats--Top 40, Hot AC and Alternative--and its music video has already exceeded 1 million views on YouTube. As for the CD, All Rebel Rockers marked Franti’s highest Billboard Top 200 Album Chart debut ever.

Through his entire musical career to date, Franti has continued to slowly but surely build an extremely dedicated global grass roots following. He’s done it with a new spin on an old fashioned way. He’s earned his fans, one winning concert at a time. Ultimately what unites Franti’s remarkable and impressive career is, ironically, the man’s ongoing search for harmony.
“As a musician and a man, I more than anything else want to be a unifier,” Franti explains. “I want to bring people together through music and its unique power. And I hope that somehow that sense of unity extends beyond the music.”

Flobots, who previously headlined their own show at the Knitting Factory Reno, are returning as direct support to Michael Franti and Spearhead.  The Denver, Colorado-based musical collective are known for their battle-hardened, groove-fusing rhythm section, their classically-trained violist, and a sound that explores and expands the frontiers of live hip-hop.  Influenced by progressive rappers such as the Roots and Common as well as alternative hard rock bands like Rage Against the Machine and Tool, Flobots are visionary in both style and message.  The band’s ability to drop from symphonic rock-infused crescendos into stripped-down string-laden breakbeats has earned them a reputation for both originality and authenticity.

JIMMY CLIFF

Jimmy Cliff is a gentle soul — that's always come through in his songs and in the lilt in his voice. His most legendary songs appeared in the 1972 film The Harder They Come and its soundtrack; start with "Many Rivers to Cross" and you'll feel the heart, soul and wisdom of Jimmy Cliff.
Cliff starred in The Harder They Come as a reggae artist trying to make it in the music business, and the songs he sings — including "You Can Get It If You Really Want," "Sitting in Limbo" (both of which he performs in this Tiny Desk Concert) and "The Harder They Come" — never died. They're part of the soundtrack to a generation, but their reach extends beyond that. The Harder They Come put reggae on the map in the early '70s and became both an antidote and a guiding spirit to the punk and new wave music that would come a few years later.
For a musician, it must be hard to have your career hinge on your early music, but Jimmy Cliff always soldiered on. Still does. And his new songs are often as good as those early ones — he performs one, "I Got to Move On," here. But it is often circumstances, not songwriting abilities, that land a tune in the canon.
Jimmy Cliff was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame earlier this year — and was, for many, the star performer there. In myriad ways, his aging voice sounds better than ever, having grown into those songs he wrote and sang nearly four decades ago. I felt honored to be a part of this Tiny Desk Concert, and pleased that we captured it for posterity.

QUEEN MUSHIYA REMEMBERS  LINCOLN "SUGAR" MINOTT - MAY 25, 1956 - JULY 10, 2010

Sunday, July 11, 2010 8:50 AM My night started out nice attended two fine concerts in Dallas Saturday I was on a musical high. And then my world came to a screaming halt with messages on my phone and texts from Carmelita (Irie Vision TV) and soon after family and others in California notifying me of Sugar Minott's death. Apparently Carmelita tried to call me while I was attending the Dallas Reggae Festival; regretfully I did not check my messages on my way to the other concert. It was 4:30 am when I had the opportunity to check my messages and heard the earth changing news.

I cannot say a passing affecting me so, since the day we lost Mikey; as it was through Mikey that I met Sugar Minott, Mikey had produced alot of Sugar's earlier recordings while he was at JBC in Jamaica. Funny thing when I first started my show Reggae Solutiions. I would always say before I played Sugar's song "Not for Sale".. I always loved a little "Sugar" in my tea..too many times I had been meaning to call and have Sugar come on the show. However travel and time got away from me.

Sugar in all his glory will always be the voice of "lovers Rock" as no one could touch his pitch as he brought you into his world with songs such as " I'm not for sale","The more we are together", "Give my love to you", "Conscious Lover", " Half a love" (my favorite) and "tears you cry"' he was also a heavy hitter with songs such as "Watch your back"' (this song we all play when we are vexed by wolf in sheep clothing in our mix).

Sugar also made you think about it when he sung "Mind blowing decisions", "King of King" and Mr. Fisherman". Sugar Minott literally had a "sweet voice"' however no matter what the message in the song was he would make it work. And all I can remember now is how I am honored to have crossed his path in life, talk with him and laugh with him over the years in my travel with Mikey Dread ...They were two of a kind together; very high strung and lovable Jamaican men (smile), if you had a chance to spend even a minute with him it would be memorable. (smile) Sometimes I would have to act as referee between the two (smile).

Mikey and Sugar went way back; as Mikey was one of the first producers for Sugar, this helped jump start his career in Reggae. All I could remember was how nice it was to sit and listen to them talk and laugh about old times.

I once been naïve asked sugar "why they call you sugar"? he said to me are you for real, you don't know and laughed. (smile). All those flood of sweet memories hit me like a thunderstorm this morning as I spoke with Carmelita, The Scientist, Lady Cham, Leon (Mikey's brother) and others. This is surely another strong blow to our Reggae fraternity, my heart is literally broken in two, his presence will surely be missed, but in my heart forever he will live. I know in my heart of hearts, just like when Mikey passed. He will be met at Zion's gate by our brothers before him and be welcomed to a new beginning - an Eternal gig with Mikey Dread, Peter Tosh, Joseph Hill, Bob Marley, Lucky Dube and others. My heart is truly broken today, condolences to his family, friends and fans. Queen Mushiya I will always love u through eternity. From the words of Mark Wonder - "Jah will see us through children, all our worries and problems he will solve them". Trust in the guidance of JAH!

SEAN KINGSTON INVOLVED IN SEXUAL ASSAULT CASE
R&B/Reggae artist Sean Kingston has got himself involved in some bad news. Seattle Police were planning on investigating Sean along with three other men in the supposed drugging and rape of two local women.

Last Sunday night two women showed up to a hotel room at the Crowne Plaza in Seattle where Kingston was staying. According to police the women were already drunk when they got there and one of them proceeded to have quote "aggressive sex" with Kingston. After this Kingston left and the same woman had sex with two other men while her friend got it on with another man in the same room.

Somewhere in this drunken orgy, for some still unknown reason, an ambulance was called and both of the women were taken to a hospital where they were tested for rape and the presence of roofies in their system, to which the results are still unknown. Police initially wanted to interview Kingston but now say the rape claim is not credible and is not pursuing the case. One of the women at least though does plan to file a civil suit against the young singer.

Good news for Sean that his name was cleared but even to be involved in this madness is a bad look. Rappers beware, it can get really real, really fast!

Alrica : : This Time Round- The Untold Stories
 Name of Song: Many Nights
 Release Date: August 21st, 2010
Site Where it Can be Purchased: www.alrica.net <http://www.alrica.net>
(on and after the release date)

Alrica’s vocal style is a unique blend of rich soul and reggae fused with jazz and hip hop. Onstage, she is a truly breathtaking performer. Her debut CD, an EP entitled This Time Round generated excitement from fans and music connoisseurs worldwide.

Audiences were impressed with her ability to transition smoothly from a soulful sound to more dance floor ready tracks. In an interview with Liberating Style Magazine, Alrica stated, “I feel comfortable in both lanes, but I prefer singing the slower songs that really allow me to experiment lyrically and touch a certain place emotionally.”

Alrica is finally ready to fill in the gaps and share the stories that her fans had not been privy to in her debut release. Her sophomore release, This Time Round-The Untold Stories includes all of the best tracks from her debut album as well as seven new songs. Broken hearts, unrequited love, infidelity and economic suffering, only begin to scratch the surface of the subject matter Alrica shares with her audience. Music critics who have had the opportunity to preview the album are particularly impressed with the strong emotional connection Alrica continually exudes in her delivery.

Her first release from the upcoming album, Many Nights is a song in which Alrica relates a heart wrenching story of waiting for an unfaithful spouse to come home. Many will find this song almost too easy to relate to.

ZION TROD ROOTS & CULTURE MUSIC AND DANCE SERIES
EVERY THIRD SUNDAY AT CPAC, BROOKLYN
A FUND-RAISING PROJECT FOR ETHIOPIA

The Women’s Auxiliary of Local Number One of the Ethiopian World Federation, Incorporated (EWF) launches a fund raising entertainment series for the organization’s projects in Ethiopia on Sunday, July 18, 2010. The Fund Raising effort takes the form of a Monthly Dance and Concert dubbed “Zion Trod Roots & Culture Sundays” to be held on the 3rd Sunday of each month at the Cultural Performance Arts Center (CPAC) at 1020 East 48th Street, Brooklyn, New York 11203 (corner of Farragut Road).

The Zion Trod Fund-Raiser is geared toward the development of the Shashamanne Land Grant in Ethiopia (land given to the Black People’s of the world by His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Haile Selassie I, for black people in the diaspora who desire to return to the Motherland.)  A minimum of 2/3 of the income received from the event is designated for the following projects in Ethiopia:

(1)  A Vocational Training Institute (with a proposed Orphanage)
(2)  A self-sustainable Model City to accommodate those repatriating from the West
(3)  An ongoing Rainwater Harvesting Program (building concrete tanks for families in the  to have access to water during times of drought and for domestic farming)
The Ethiopian World Federation, Incorporated (the “EWF” or “Federation”) is a membership organization, incorporated August 25, 1937 in the State of New York, and is a not-for-profit 501 (c) 4 (civic league, social welfare) tax exempt organization operating under the New York State Not-for-Profit laws.
The organization was incorporated in 1937, during the Italian invasion of Ethiopia. Blacks in the West gallantly supported Ethiopia’s war effort, sacrificing their meager pennies despite the hardship of the Depression, many even volunteering to go to Ethiopia to help the country defend itself against Mussolini’s army.  A delegation of three prominent Harlem figures, all leaders of The United Aid for Ethiopia, were sent to seek an audience with His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Haile Selassie I, who was in exile in Bath, England at that time. In response to their request, the Emperor empowered his personal physician, Dr. Malaku E. Bayen, to travel to New York and establish the Ethiopian World Federation, Incorporated, with a Constitution and By-Laws designed as a guide to organize and protect the Black peoples of the world.  The preamble of the Constitution reads as follows:
“We, the Black Peoples of the World, In order to effect Unity, Solidarity, Liberty, Freedom and Self-determination, to secure Justice and maintain the Integrity of Ethiopia, which is our Divine Heritage, do hereby establish and ordain this Constitution for The Ethiopian World Federation, Incorporated.”
“The EWF was given the responsibility by our 1937 Constitution and Bylaws to organize and pave the way for the repatriation of the Black Family to Africa, and now the women of the organization and others in the Black community, including the Rastafarian community, are invited to come together to defend and protect our family and future generations,” said Gem Morrison, a member of the Local One Executive Committee and International President of the organization.  “The Women’s Auxiliary is calling upon the singers and players of instruments who have long sung about Africa, Ethiopia and Shashemanne, to come forward and support this fund raising series with their God-given talent.”

All members of the media and the general public are invited to attend the FREE press party and Launch event on Sunday July 18, 2010 at CPAC from 3:00 pm – 6 p-m.  Concert and Dance follows.

For membership information, to volunteer to help, to make a donation or to request a copy of the Constitution and By-Laws of the Federation, please email the Women’s Auxiliary at ziontrod@gmail.com, or call 212-433-0868. Gratitude Prayer - Prayers of Gratitude
A  gratitude prayer can be made by anyone. It does not need to be  elaborate or even religious. Saying thank you and focusing on grateful  feelings via prayer and/or meditative thought is a great way to count  your blessing, relieve stress, and elevate your consciousness. Give it a try. It can even bring you good luck.
