Alternative News
Investigation Reveals Massive, Unmanageable, Outsourced US Intelligence System
  from DemocracyNow.org
"Top Secret America," an explosive investigative series published in the Washington Post Monday (July 19, 2010), is creating a firestorm on Capitol Hill. "The top-secret world the government created in response to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, has become so large, so unwieldy and so secretive that no one knows how much money it costs, how many people it employs, how many programs exist within it or exactly how many agencies do the same work," the article begins. The article's co-author, William Arkin, tells interviewer Amy Goodman: "Really the most significant finding, to me, is the number of private companies in America who have been enlisted in the war on terrorism and who have now become an intrinsic part of government, really where the line is blurred between government and private sector."

Arts and Entertainment
'South of the Border'
with Oliver Stone

from AlterNet.org
Oliver Stone's new film "South of the Border" traces the rise of Chavez, Lula, Evo, and others who see participatory democracy and cooperation between Latin American countries as the future. Stone's legacy as a successful filmmaker known for going against the Hollywood grain - consistently leftist, anti-war and anti-power - landed him relatively intimate and uncensored access to each of the heads of state in question.

Holistic Health
Awareness Itself is Medicinal
By Paul Linn MA, LMHC, LMT / AsisMassage.com
The abundant, fulfilled life does not require possessions, status or power but rather a unveiled clear view that happiness and love are birthrights securely realized when the medicinal power of Awareness transcends the domain of possibilities and awakens as a living Realization. Meditation includes practices, which emphasize awareness and "mindfulness." Such activities seek to develop and nourish present moment awareness. They encourage paying attention in a way so as to be more aware in the present moment of all that is here, and of the constantly changing nature of what is here. These "mindfulness" practices are often described as "being, not doing," because mindfulness itself is the innate quality of human beings. Mindfulness can be defined as careful, open-hearted, choiceless, present moment awareness.

Spirituality
How Will You Find Your Way?
By John Dennison / PeaceOptions News (johndennison.com)
To move through these uncertain times, we need to find what the Buddha called the middle path that exists somewhere between the extremes. It is not a static way, nor one that is set in stone that all must follow. Rather, it is continually shifting, requiring us to develop a great sensitivity to the energies of the moment, and finding our point of balance within the situation so that we are not derailed by the dramas as we move toward a better tomorrow.

Reading Room
Women Throughout the Ages
By Bonnie Moss / Golden Cup Cafe (goldencupcafe.tripod.com)
In the beginning of time, women were not a part of the male world of action, politics and thoughts. Somehow, women were able to enter the male-dominated world and share their knowledge on the issues of that era. Many of these women will forever remain nameless, forgotten and lost in the mists of time. The modern female moves on towards unchartered territories where no woman has been. Into the late 20th century, more women are recognized for their important contributions in politics, the corporate world, science, medicine, education, culture and technology in the world stage, even into space exploration.

Environment News Stories
June Was Hottest Ever Recorded Worldwide    from the Guardian UK / via Common Dreams News Service (commondreams.org)
Last month was the hottest June ever recorded worldwide and the fourth consecutive month that the combined global land and sea temperature records have been broken, according to the US government's climate data centre. The trend to a warmer world is now incontrovertible. According to NOAA, June was the 304th consecutive month with a combined global land and surface temperature above the 20th-century average. In a further sign of a warming world, the Jakobshavn Isbrae glacier, one of the largest in Greenland, lost a 2.7-square mile chunk of ice between 6-7 July - one of the largest single losses to a glacier ever recorded.
