Ernest Ranglin best known for his session work at the famed Studio One, helped give birth to the ska genre in the late 1950s. Some credit Ranglin with the invention of the core style of guitar play (sometimes known as "scratching") found in nearly all ska music.

Ranglin played on many classic Jamaican recordings, and he performed with artists such as Jimmy Cliff, Monty Alexander, Prince Buster, The Skatalites and the Eric Deans Orchestra. He has also explored other styles of music, notably blending jazz and reggae.

As child, Ranglin had two uncles who played guitar and ukulele. After watching them play, he practiced on their instruments, and stood in for one of them when they failed to turn up for a recording session, impressing his other uncle so much that he was given the instrument for his seventh birthday. He built his own guitar using a sardine can and wires, before progressing to a real one. He moved with his family to Kingston, where he was educated at Providence, Kingston Senior School, and Bodin College.  While still in his teens, he began performing live, locally and in the Bahamas, often with the young Monty Alexander. Charlie Christian was an early influence. Aged 15, he joined the Val Bennett band, and went on to play with the Eric Deans band and Count Boysie.

By the early 1950s, Ranglin had become a proficient jazz guitarist and toured overseas. In 1958, Chris Blackwell recorded a Ranglin single, which was one of the first releases on Blackwell's R&B label, and a live album split between Ranglin and Lance Haywood was the first to be released by Blackwell. Around 1959, he joined Cluett Johnson's band the Blues Blasters, recording several tracks for Coxsone Dodd at Studio One, including "Shuffling Jug", regarded as one of the first ska recordings. In 1962, the James Bond film Dr. No was filmed in Jamaica. While Byron Lee & the Dragonaires appeared in the film, the soundtrack recordings were actually made by Ranglin.

In 1964, Ranglin played guitar on singer Millie Small 's "My Boy Lollipop ", the first Jamaican song to achieve international success.

Ranglin recorded two jazz albums in the mid-1960s for the Merritone label - Wranglin (1964) and Reflections (1965), also working for Duke Reid as a musical director at the Treasure Isle recording studio during this period.

He began attracting international notice in 1964 when he traveled to London, England to perform at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club. He became the venue's resident guitarist for nine months, backing numerous guest artists and appearing in a recording of a Sonny /Dick Morrissey jam session in 1966.

He made several solo records for Island Records, as well as collaborating with Prince Buster. He returned to session work, arranging songs such as the Melodians ' "Rivers of Babylon" and playing guitar leads in the Wailers' "It Hurts to Be Alone".

During the late 1960s and the 1970s, Ranglin was much in demand as a studio musician and arranger, working with top Jamaican producers such as Dodd, Lee "Scratch" Perry, and Clancy Eccles and toured with Jimmy Cliff  in the 1970s.

In the late 70s, he re-teamed with his friend Monty Alexander to record Latin-Caribbean infused jazz for Pablo Records.

In 1973 he was awarded the Order of Distinction from the Jamaican Government for his contributions to music.

He moved to Florida in the late 1970s, where he performed at jazz festivals and continued to record occasionally.

He signed to Chris Blackwell's newly formed Palm Pictures label to issue 1998's In Search of the Lost Riddim.

The albums E.B. @ Noon and Modern Answers to Old Problems followed two years later. Grooving was released in early 2001. In 2002, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree from the University of the West Indies for his outstanding contribution to the development of music in Jamaica.

In 2006, he was the subject of a documentary covering his career - Roots Of Reggae: The Ernest Ranglin Story, produced and written by Arthur Gorson.

In 2008, he was inducted into the Jamaican Music hall of Fame by the Jamaica Association of Vintage Artistes and Affiliates (JAVAA).

WANDERLUST: MUSIC, YOGA MORE!

Irish and Chin Salutes Sugar Minott With Unreleased Footage From 2009's Reeewind

Death is the bitter sweet gift of life. We all know it's coming, although for most it appears unannounced. The irony of it all is that we spend a life time preparing to see the gates of Zion, yet our departure is very rarely celebrated with joy. I (Garfield "Chin" Bourne) was not a personal friend of Sugar Minott but a huge fan of his music and unlimited contributions to the early stages of the dancehall and sound system culture. So, celebrating Sugar's life may be a little bit easier for me to do than those who were the closest to him.

I refuse to be saddened and want to enjoy Sugar's life through the works of art he has left behind. With more than 60 albums and tons of timeless hits like "Mr. DC," "Herbsman Hustling," "Vanity," "Never Gonna Give up Jah," "Good Thing Going" and so many others, Sugar Minott has a catalogue that rivals some of Jamaica's top stars. Not only do we have Sugar's music to live through, we have the careers of the many artists he either influenced or discovered. My dearest memory of Sugar Minott will undoubtly be his performance at "REEEWIND" last year.

Sugar was not billed for the show.  In fact, he just happened to be in town and called us for some passes for the event.  At the time, we were under pressure because Luciano was denied entry to the United States just before the show.  Hearing Sugar's voice on the line was like a breath of fresh air. Irish's father and Sugar went way back. So, Irish worked out the business end of it and we booked him for the show. Sugar Minott's performance at the show was nothing short of flawless.  Our last minute added guest literally brought the house down with his hits. The crowd was amazed!! Sugar Minott was the talk in the streets for weeks and he was so humble. He just loved doing his thing!

They just don't make singers like Sugar Minott anymore!  Today, it's all about the money and very little talent. Although this great hero, better yet "Godfather of Dancehall Music," has passed on, he will leave behind an impeccable legacy and great ethics.  Many of today's artists still have a lot to learn.

The passing of Sugar Minott makes me wonder what the future of Reggae music will be like. To view Irish and Chin's tribute to Sugar Minott, which includes snippets of his stellar performance at "Reeewind" in October 2009 (his last big show), click here or on the photo.  Rest in Peace Sugar Minott.  You may be gone but will never be forgotten!

All Rebel Rockers, Michael Franti’s most recent album, features the legendary production team of Sly & Robbie and reinforces Franti’s place as a global force and a true musician of his time. The first single, “Say Hey (I Love You)” is fast becoming one of the biggest of Franti’s career. It’s one of the most added records at multiple radio formats--Top 40, Hot AC and Alternative--and its music video has already exceeded 1 million views on YouTube. As for the CD, All Rebel Rockers marked Franti’s highest Billboard Top 200 Album Chart debut ever.

Through his entire musical career to date, Franti has continued to slowly but surely build an extremely dedicated global grass roots following. He’s done it with a new spin on an old fashioned way. He’s earned his fans, one winning concert at a time. Ultimately what unites Franti’s remarkable and impressive career is, ironically, the man’s ongoing search for harmony.
“As a musician and a man, I more than anything else want to be a unifier,” Franti explains. “I want to bring people together through music and its unique power. And I hope that somehow that sense of unity extends beyond the music.”

Flobots, who previously headlined their own show at the Knitting Factory Reno, are returning as direct support to Michael Franti and Spearhead.  The Denver, Colorado-based musical collective are known for their battle-hardened, groove-fusing rhythm section, their classically-trained violist, and a sound that explores and expands the frontiers of live hip-hop.  Influenced by progressive rappers such as the Roots and Common as well as alternative hard rock bands like Rage Against the Machine and Tool, Flobots are visionary in both style and message.  The band’s ability to drop from symphonic rock-infused crescendos into stripped-down string-laden breakbeats has earned them a reputation for both originality and authenticity.

QUEEN MUSHIYA REMEMBERS  LINCOLN "SUGAR" MINOTT - MAY 25, 1956 - JULY 10, 2010

Sunday, July 11, 2010 8:50 AM My night started out nice attended two fine concerts in Dallas Saturday I was on a musical high. And then my world came to a screaming halt with messages on my phone and texts from Carmelita (Irie Vision TV) and soon after family and others in California notifying me of Sugar Minott's death. Apparently Carmelita tried to call me while I was attending the Dallas Reggae Festival; regretfully I did not check my messages on my way to the other concert. It was 4:30 am when I had the opportunity to check my messages and heard the earth changing news.

I cannot say a passing affecting me so, since the day we lost Mikey; as it was through Mikey that I met Sugar Minott, Mikey had produced alot of Sugar's earlier recordings while he was at JBC in Jamaica. Funny thing when I first started my show Reggae Solutiions. I would always say before I played Sugar's song "Not for Sale".. I always loved a little "Sugar" in my tea..too many times I had been meaning to call and have Sugar come on the show. However travel and time got away from me.

Sugar in all his glory will always be the voice of "lovers Rock" as no one could touch his pitch as he brought you into his world with songs such as " I'm not for sale","The more we are together", "Give my love to you", "Conscious Lover", " Half a love" (my favorite) and "tears you cry"' he was also a heavy hitter with songs such as "Watch your back"' (this song we all play when we are vexed by wolf in sheep clothing in our mix).

Sugar also made you think about it when he sung "Mind blowing decisions", "King of King" and Mr. Fisherman". Sugar Minott literally had a "sweet voice"' however no matter what the message in the song was he would make it work. And all I can remember now is how I am honored to have crossed his path in life, talk with him and laugh with him over the years in my travel with Mikey Dread ...They were two of a kind together; very high strung and lovable Jamaican men (smile), if you had a chance to spend even a minute with him it would be memorable. (smile) Sometimes I would have to act as referee between the two (smile).

Mikey and Sugar went way back; as Mikey was one of the first producers for Sugar, this helped jump start his career in Reggae. All I could remember was how nice it was to sit and listen to them talk and laugh about old times.

I once been naïve asked sugar "why they call you sugar"? he said to me are you for real, you don't know and laughed. (smile). All those flood of sweet memories hit me like a thunderstorm this morning as I spoke with Carmelita, The Scientist, Lady Cham, Leon (Mikey's brother) and others. This is surely another strong blow to our Reggae fraternity, my heart is literally broken in two, his presence will surely be missed, but in my heart forever he will live. I know in my heart of hearts, just like when Mikey passed. He will be met at Zion's gate by our brothers before him and be welcomed to a new beginning - an Eternal gig with Mikey Dread, Peter Tosh, Joseph Hill, Bob Marley, Lucky Dube and others. My heart is truly broken today, condolences to his family, friends and fans. Queen Mushiya I will always love u through eternity. From the words of Mark Wonder - "Jah will see us through children, all our worries and problems he will solve them". Trust in the guidance of JAH!

SUBJECT:  NEW RELEASE and the name of the artist

Mixed Culture : : 'Mourning Chant'
Name of CD/Album 'Pensando Reggae'

'Pensando Reggae' is the debut cd release from the new, young group called Mixed Culture. The band is of a latin background except Eddie Culture is from the Cape Verde Islands, just off the coast of Senegal. So the album 'Pensando Reggae' means thinking about reggae which is what the band thinks about all the time. 'Pensando Reggae' also has several reggae songs in Spanish to show their culture and latin heritage. The band plays heavy roots reggae; their music is slow tempos, think Big Mountain(the roots and latin side) meets Midnite. Cisco, the lead singer, loves Garnett Silk and you can hear it especially in "Sudamerica," which is the melody from Garnett Silk's "Mama Africa." It's a tribute to their homelands in South America: Peru, Colombia and Uruguay. The rest of the album is about love, injustice, peace, equal rights and righteousness. These kids will surprise you, thats the drum and bass section, 18 years old. If you see them, they will surprise you again. We hope you get to do both: see and hear them. This is roots reggae music.

Beres Hammond, Returns To North America “For The Love Of It” Summer Tour [Complete Dates/Locations Inside]

Jamaican musical legend and Grammy nominated singer, songwriter, and producer Beres Hammond’s “For The Love Of It” 2010 Tour kicked off in Florida last week and will continue throughout the U.S. and Canada making stops in 35 cities including Atlanta (July 30), Washington, DC (August 1), New York (August 6,7 & 8), San Francisco (August 27), Los Angeles (August 29) and wrapping back in Florida’s West Palm Beach (Sept 12). Joining Hammond on the tour will be Kenyatta Hill & Culture and Inner Circle.
Known to many as the originator of “lover’s rock,” Hammond has been writing, producing and pouring out his smoky-sweet voice over every kind of riddim track for over three decades. He continues to top the charts, most recently with the 2008 release A MOMENT IN TIME which Allmusic called “another fine album from one of Jamaica's finest singers” He has sold out some of the country’s largest venues including New York’s Radio City Music Hall.
The single “I Feel Good” from A MOMENT IN TIME has remained in the Top 5 on reggae charts since the release. Hammond can also be found on the summer’s must-have reggae compilation REGGAE GOLD 2010, along with other chart toppers as Damian Marley and Nas, Shaggy, Etana and Gyptian. VP Records recently reissued Hammond’s 1979 JUST A MAN, which has been praised as a “triumphant reissue.”
