WASHINGTON DC - CATCH TARRUS RILEY LIVE THIS SATURDAY AT ZANZIBAR
|
|
|
The secret to the success of Tarrus Riley, believe it or not, is quite simple - "when preparation meets opportunity", stated a self-assured Riley. "I've been surrounded by music all my life. My father is a singer and my mother is a bathroom singer," he explains with a chuckle. "Because I can't change the world, I sing for the people - this is the contribution I can make and after I make a song; it isn't even mine anymore; it belongs to the people."
Virtually born and steeped in music, Tarrus Riley has learnt a lot by merely being in the environment of the music business. He caught on very quickly and so voiced his first song at the age of 13. "I've always loved music; I used to deejay but everyone used to encourage me to sing. They used to call me Singy Singy 'cause I'm always singing," he said with a introspective smile. In 2004, Tarrus released his debut album, Challenges - "I was fortunate to have recorded my debut album with an independent label out of Miami."
Tarrus successfully released his sophomore album in 2006 to widespread acclaim and spawned hit singles - "Stay With You," "Beware," and the extremely popular "She's Royal."
"I define myself so I make thought-provoking music about Black consciousness and experiences. I want to open people's minds and let them think. My music isn't prejudiced towards colour, class, creed or nationality," he explained passionately. "I target women and children with my music because slavery tampered with the woman's mind and that's why I wrote She's Royal. She's the head of the household so she has the power to influence the young men and women of tomorrow," he further explained.
As with everything in life, a firm foundation is always the safest way to go. Tarrus works with a group of friends on a movement proudly titled BLAKSOIL - Bredren Living According King Selassie-I Overstanding & Iritical Livity. Through this movement, Riley hopes to further target the consciousness of our women and children.
Tarrus has consistently been awarded for his contribution to the industry and for touching the people. "From I released Parables, I've been getting 'Best Singer of the Year' or 'Best Song of the Year' awards, both locally and internationally. But to be honest, the best award I receive constantly is from the people themselves - when I can look in their faces and see the impression my music has made - that is the Best award I can ever get," he comments genuinely. Nonetheless, Tarrus is the proud holder of CVM's 15th Anniversary Award, held in February 2009, for the 'Most Admired Song in the Past 15 Years' for the hit, "She's Royal." "That award really means a lot to me because it was chosen by the people in the streets," he shared keenly.
Also appearing alongside Tarrus Riley is
GRAMPS MORGAN
Roy "GRAMPS" Morgan, a member of the internationally renowned reggae group, Morgan Heritage, was born in Brooklyn, New York, but grew up playing football in Springfield, Massachusetts with his parents and 29 other siblings.
Gramps is one of the legendary Denroy Morgan's 17 sons who at the tender age of nine became a member of the family band. Denroy however, prophesized that one day, each of them would trod on their own journey to achieve solo stardom. Gramps, a burly vocalist and keyboard, player affirms "This has always been my fathers plan; we are all on an individual journey to express ourselves musically. We (referring to Morgan Heritage) don't want to be predictable in the music; we want to keep it interesting and we want to keep it fun as well."
Now after nearly a decade together, touring almost every continent on the planet and performing for millions of people worldwide, this tightly knit family member's solo journey has begun.

NEW JERSEY INTERNATIONAL REGGAE FEST RETURNS TO MUSIC'S ROOTS
|
|
|
|
FILE PHOTOOne of reggae's leading female artists, Marcia Griffiths, will perform at the New Jersey International Reggae Fest on Sunday.
By Tad Hendrickson/For The Star-Ledger
The oven-like heat of August makes it a challenge to leave the comforts of air conditioning, but Jamaican music is best when its hot.
Now in its tenth year, the New Jersey International Reggae Fest continues to offer New Jerseyans a chance to experience this music in its natural environment: out of doors and in the heat. The festival has bounced around Newark to various sites, drawing between 3,000 and 5,000 people a year. This year it will be in the Edison Park Fast complex, across the street from the Prudential Center.
In the past, this event has brought in reggae icons like Beres Hammond and Barrington Levy as well as stars from the worlds of dancehall (Sean Paul, Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Capleton), soca (Kevin Lyttle) and calypso (Machel Montano).
Festival organizer Kacy “G City” Rankine says the only Caribbean style that has not been featured is salsa, which he hopes to bring in at some point in the future.
This year’s bill is more focused on roots-reggae. Reggae matriarch Marcia Griffiths, who was one of Bob Marley’s backup singers as a member of the I-Threes, will co-headline. Other reggae stalwarts on the bill include Freddie McGregor, Tarrus Riley and Gramps Morgan, the head of the illustrious reggae family that includes Morgan Heritage.
“This year we are trying to do something more grass-roots than some of the dancehall of past years,” says Rankine. “We’re trying to create a better family environment with a family-friendly artist lineup.”
Rootsy dancehall pioneer Cocoa Tea will co-headline, and other performers will include Baby Sham — who collaborated with Alicia Keys on his hit “Ghetto Story”
—as well as Cham, Laden, the smooth-voiced Gyptian.
There will also be rising stars like Romain Virgo, whose hits “Cyaan Sleep” and “Love Doctor” draw upon dancehall, reggae and R&B while focusing on a positive message.
Local acts will perform short sets early in the day with international artists appearing in the late afternoon and evening. There will be food and crafts vendors and, in keeping with the new family focus, Rankine has also made arrangements for kids’ play areas.
The festival is the biggest event by Rankine’s G-City Enterprise, which is producing it along with Jeawin Entertainment and the popular Jamaican music web site roadblockradio.com. This partnership also presents reggae concerts at the Robert Treat Hotel in Newark and the Ritz Theatre in Elizabeth.
“In the 10 years that we’ve been doing this, it’s grown to become the main event of the Caribbean-American community here in New Jersey,” says Rankine. “This is for the 250,000 Caribbean-Americans in Essex County, Bergen and statewide.”
New Jersey International Reggae Fest Where: Edison Park Complex, 162 Mulberry St., Newark When: Sunday. Gates at noon, music from 2 to 10 p.m. How much: $39.99-$100. Kids younger than 12 free. Call (973) 573-8154 or visit roadblockradio.com.

INTERNATIONAL REGGAE SUPERSTAR COLLIE BUDDZ CREATES TOURING COMPANY AND HITS THE ROAD
|
|
|
|
Collie Buddz, the Bermudian Reggae star with the dancehall sound that crosses genres from pop to hip-hop, announced this week that he was forming his own touring company, CB Touring, to handle all booking for his live appearances. CB Touring embraces the trend of artistic control in every aspect of life on the road by aggressively pursuing a touring schedule that allows Collie to connect with his fans and bring his hard hitting live show to more locations across the globe.
The value of an artist's intellectual property has declined significantly in the age of file sharing, and Collie is determined not to devalue it as it relates to touring.
'Every venue we play, every promoter we work with, all the numbers, when we tour, what songs we play... I want my own organization to be in charge of those decisions, and own that information,' says Collie in between signing autographs for fans during his current tour with Slightly Stoopid and Cypress Hill.
On the road through the end of August, Collie is playing the official pre-party for Lollapalooza on Thursday night at House of Blues Chicago before continuing on the Legalize It 2010 tour, which finishes in Florida. Collie will hit a small East Coast and West Coast run in September including headlining the West Beach Festival in Santa Barbara. The fun continues with a secondary market jaunt in November. Collie will then take some much-needed rest to be with his family in Bermuda as he prepares for the birth of his first child. In 2011 expect a nationwide US tour kicking off on the East Coast in late March and ending on the West Coast in Late April followed by extensive international touring.
CB Touring is the product of a unique collaboration between Collie Buddz, his management team, Mojiza Management, headed by industry veteran Dino Devaille, and Ineffable Music Group, a Bay Area firm specializing in artist infrastructure solutions. 'We have taken the philosophies of the best agents and touring operations in the business and molded them into something that allows Collieto be the touring artist he wants to be, on his terms.' Says Thomas Cussins of CB Touring.
' Tech N9ne's operation with Mark Reifsteck, and the model of Aaron Pinkus at Paradigm are major influences on how we approach our booking philosophy. We also have to credit the strategies of Ari Bernstein, formerly of WLA, and the genre -bending packages and artist development of many other agents.'
Collie Buddz will be releasing a follow-up record to his self-titled release that has sold almost half a million copies worldwide in January 2011. The album will continue to bend the paradigm of what a reggae artist is supposed to sound like. Collie, who credits his brother Smokey with introducing him to the beauty of reggae music as a youth in Bermuda, will nonetheless experiment with his beats and flows as he lays down track after track of pure 'Fyah.' Collie's long-time manager, Dino Devaille, who helped to mold the concept of CB Touring had this to say about Collie's new music, "For the sophomore release it's pure vibes man: the energy you feel when you find that person that practically makes your heart stop, for good or for bad; the crush of walking by someone without food to eat, clothes to wear, or a roof to shelter them and telling yourself you can do something, or you won't, and time stops in that moment while you decide to walk by them or to walk beside them; the feelings of bliss when you thank The Almighty for giving you life; the feelings of devastation when you feel like you can't move on.
Collie's sophomore album makes you feel like someone understands you and you don't exist alone. It's sound magic". He also commented on what fans should expect from Collie in the next year, 'in the future the fans should come to expect Collie Buddz to become a brand artist, and a movement that caters to the ever changing music fan. Collie Buddz is the people's artist.'
Watching Collie as he performs on stage with his band New Kingston at a recent show in Philadelphia at Penn's Landing, it is clear that despite his reputation as an artist's artist with the most complete reggae album of the last ten years, nowhere is he more comfortable than on stage. As he flashes his trademark smile and waves in unison with five thousand fans, he is in complete control of the stage and the next move is up to him. We get the feeling that is exactly what he had in mind.

EARTHDANCE 2010 THE UNITED BEATS OF PEACE FESTIVAL “FAREWELL BLACK OAK RANCH” HWY 101, LAYTONVILLE, CALIFORNIA SEPT 17TH, 18TH, 19TH.
|
|
|
The 14th annual Earthdance Festival will take place at the renowned Black Oak Ranch, a property rich in native history and old growth oak trees. The ranch has been home to Earthdance for the past 8 years, but due to expanding audiences, the festival will be moving to a larger facility for 2011. Often described as a festival that combines the artistic liberation of Burning Man with the socially responsible conscience of the Oregon Country Fair, the festival has gained international recognition as one of the best “boutique” festivals on the west coast of the USA, with sell out shows each year.
For 2010, Earthdance Northern California will unite with over 350 locations in 60 countries across the world to create the most conscious global festival of our time. To make this year a “grand farewell” to remember, the festival will present an incredible line up of conscious musicians, visual artists, DJ's, speakers and activists, who believe in a sustainable future for our planet. Working with the theme of “unity in diversity”, the festival will host 5 music stages and will feature high profile conscious artists from many genres of the international music scene, including World, Electronica, Hip Hop, Folk and Jazz. Also included will be an indigenous elder’s council, made up of indigenous elders from many nations, who will share wisdom and sacred ceremony.
An important part of the festival will be a compelling educational component called the “Activist Alley”, where festival patrons can interact with both local and international non-profit groups. These organizations will share information and workshops on relevant global and local issues, inspiring local participants to take a stand for the future of our planet.
A highlight of the festival will be a synchronized global link up, taking place on Saturday the 18th, when at 4pm (PST), Earthdance California will synchronize with over 350 locations in 60 countries. At this precise moment, a specially created song called the “prayer for peace” will be played in every location at the same time. The festival will also feature a wide variety of ‘Healthy’ vendors supplying many types of international foods and eco wares. Shaded camping and HOT showers are also available to festival attendees.
Part proceeds from the festival will be donated to the Earthdance non-profit, A California based 501c3 organization.

RICHIE SPICE – TOURING NORTH AMERICA AND CANADA - SEPTEMBER 2010
|
|
|
Richie Spice is now confirming shows for his western U.S. tour this September 2010.
He recently finished a five week tour in Europe. His U.S. tour last September was a great success, consistently stirring up excitement and large crowds. There was a lot of interest and enthusiasm up and down. This year we hope for increased success since he delivered so well last year and he has so many hit songs playing out there.
Prior to the current tour, Richie Spice also did a two week European tour in March 2010. Over the years Richie has been consistently touring and performing in Europe. He is very popular there. He and his crew also recently finished touring Australia, and they are now one year into a two year plan to tour the entire Caribbean. They have a lot of new singles and combinations out, and the new CD is slated for release this summer.
Richie Spice is currently one of the hottest commodities worldwide in cultural reggae music, moving with a positive message and a full, strong entourage. Earth a Run Red, Richie Spice’s biggest hit, dominated the airwaves in a positive and conscious manner for many years. People are enthusiastic to hear this and his numerous other hits live. Richie Spice is a top new breed reggae artist and on this tour he will be moving with some of the finest musicians out of Jamaica.
In the Old Testament’s Book of Judges, Gideon led Israel to victory over the Midianites, who dwelled in the southeastern part of Palestine, with a small army equipped with only trumpets, lit torches and jars to conceal the torches’ flames. Following Gideon’s instructions, his three hundred soldiers blew their trumpets and smashed their jars as they shouted “a sword for the Lord, a sword for Gideon”. With that, the tens of thousands of Midianite troops fled in fear.
Armed with just a microphone, one-drop rhythms and purifying lyrical flames, singer Richie Spice is the Gideon of contemporary reggae. The publicly declared “prince of fire” uses culturally uplifting, spiritually fortified words to defeat the negative content that informs much of popular (Jamaican) music. Fittingly, Gideon Boot is the title track of Spice’s brilliant fourth album. Recorded over the timeless Johnny Too Bad rhythm (taken from The Slickers 1970s hit of the same name, popularized in the film The Harder They Come) the song details Spice’s strategic plan for delivering his musical sermon to an awaiting global audience. “I need a Gideon boot and a khaki suit to stand out inna Babylon and defend the truth/ I got a strong reggae beat with a mic in my hand fe lead out de youth dem outta destruction and let de people know right from wrong.” Just like the singer’s previous albums “Universal”, “Spice In Your Life” and “In The Streets to Africa”, “Gideon Boot” contains inspiring messages specifically aimed at empowering vulnerable youth. Spice confidently juxtaposes his songs of valor with unity themes (“Living In Love”, “Getting Harder”) and the importance of staying focused - “Make Up Your Mind”, “Hang On In There”. Spice’s flawless vocals effortlessly scale the high notes then smoothly segue into scatted improvisations as he weaves intricate, evocative melodies throughout this exquisite 15-track set that is certain to carry his name to un chartered territories for Jamaican music.
The traditional Rastafarian Nyabinghi drumming that dominates the opening cut “Babylon Falling” heralds the seriousness of Spice’s musical mission. “World Is A Cycle”, sung over producer Arif Cooper’s haunting “Guardian Angel” rhythm, is, as Spice explains, “a song for the children and for the parents saying be careful because what you do can fall right back on you and your kids.”
Also included is the current Jamaican hit “The Plane Land” which display’s Spice’s superb story telling skills. The song’s lyrics detail the frustration that oftentimes accompanies post 9/11travel. “Saddle up myself fe take interrogation…tek off mi shoes, tek off mi tam, if they ever find you with a spliff yu gone another land.” “It is a song everyone can relate to if they travel,” notes Spice, “and if they don’t travel, they will learn this is what we go through as entertainers as we go to other countries.”
Since 2004, when his apocalyptic single “Earth A Run Red” became the year’s most popular reggae song, Richie Spice has performed throughout the world, insuring that cultural roots reggae isn’t relegated to a bygone era but continues as a thriving, evolving musical genre.
Born Richell Bonner in the Kingston, Jamaica suburb of St. Andrew, Richie Spice hails from a musical family that includes his older brother Pliers (from the deejay/singer duo Chaka Demus and Pliers of “Murder She Wrote” fame), singer Spanner Banner and deejay Snatcher Dogg. It was Spanner Banner, (best known for his mid 90s hit “Life Goes On”) who first brought Spice to the recording studio; the hopeful singer, admittedly, couldn’t manage the rigors of professional recording but the opportunity opened his eyes to the proficiency required to succeed in the reggae industry. “That experience show me that to reach anywhere there is a lot of work to be done,” Spice reflects.
Spice continued working towards gaining a foothold in the music industry and shortly thereafter he met veteran producer Clive Hunt who produced his breakthrough single, the engaging lovers rock tune “Grooving My Girl”, still one of the most popular songs in Spice’s repertoire. “Grooving” was initially featured on Spice’s 2000 debut album “Universal”, as was the song that would make him a household name in Jamaica, “Earth A Run Red”.
Since 2004 Spice has become one of reggae’s most in demand talents and the recipient of numerous awards and accolades. He received the Most Cultural Artist Award at the 13th annual South Florida Reggae Soca Awards in 2005; he was voted the Male Singer/Singjay of the Year at Jamaica’s IRIE FM Awards in 2007 and following his performance at the first annual “Black My Story” concert held in Kingston on Feb. 2, 2008 Spice was honored for his positive musical contributions. His 2004 album “Spice in Your Life” was listed among the year’s best reggae releases by the New York Times; “In the Streets To Africa”, released in 2007, reached number 6 on the Billboard Reggae chart and one of the album’s biggest hits “Youth Dem Cold” peaked at number 59 on the Billboard Top 100 Singles Chart and ranked at number 29 on Vibe Magazine’s Best 44 songs of 2007. Now with the release of “Gideon Boot” even greater recognition is assured for Spice’s talent, as is the expansion of his international fan base.
“I’ve always had a wide meditation of having my music go out there to the world because I know it can go far,” says Spice. “But it is very hard singing of righteousness in the world. When you sing of good you will find that evil rise up and try to dominate good. But I will continue the fight, go out there and have people hear what I am saying.”

LOOK WHO'S ON TOUR!
NIYORAH, TOUSSAINT & TUFF LION TO TOUR THE VIRGIN ISLANDS
AND US WEST COAST IN AUGUST
(July 14, 2010, St. Croix, VI) I Grade Records and Denkenesh Records are proud to present the I Grade Family’s “Feel Your Presence” Tour featuring Niyorah, Toussaint and Tuff Lion. From August 6 through August 26, the three-week tour will cover 3 shows in the US Virgin Islands and 14 shows in California, Oregon and Washington. The “Feel Your Presence” tour is a celebration of two massive summer releases: Niyorah’s brand new album, Feel Your Presence, on Denkenesh Records, and Toussaint’s solo debut, Black Gold, on I Grade Records.
Niyorah, Dominica-born, St. Thomas-raised singjay is one of the most renowned VI reggae artists. He has released 4 albums to-date, the most recent of which is an excellent roots album called Feel Your Presence that was recorded, in part, at Tuff Gong Studio in Jamaica. Niyorah, a high energy performer, has blessed the stage at festivals and clubs worldwide including, the Sierra Nevada World Music Festival (2007), Reggae Rising (2009), The World Social Forum (Venezuela), The Independent (SF), and others. He is a very energetic performer with a strong and loyal following throughout the west coast and in the Virgin Islands.
Toussaint is a soul/funk/reggae artist based in the Boston area. The former lead singer of the internationally acclaimed soul/funk group Soulive, Toussaint recently linked with St. Croix-based I Grade Records to record his solo debut album, Black Gold, which will be released on August 10. Toussaint’s sound is an organic blend of soul and roots reggae. A veteran of the stage, Toussaint has performed at legendary venues around the world including The Knitting Factory (LA), the Nokia Theater (NYC), House of Blues (LA), and the Blue Note (NYC). The lead single off of Black Gold, “Be You”, has been ringing the airwaves throughout the world since its release in April.
The original guitar maestro and roaring lion, Tuff Lion has established himself as a living legend among seekers of conscious, quality roots reggae. He has played on countless reggae releases out of the VI in his years of work with Midnite, Bambu Station and I Grade. He released his solo album in 2007 (Utterance) and a critically acclaimed guitar instrumental album in 2008 (Ten Strings).
The backing Band – the Jah Current Band – is a six piece unit comprised of members of the St. Croix-based Red I Band, Jamaican bassist/producer Andrew “Bassie” Campbell, and Celebrity Hornz: a 2-piece horn section based in California.

Beres Hammond, Returns To North America “For The Love Of It” Summer Tour [Complete Dates/Locations Inside]
Jamaican musical legend and Grammy nominated singer, songwriter, and producer Beres Hammond’s “For The Love Of It” 2010 Tour kicked off in Florida last week and will continue throughout the U.S. and Canada making stops in 35 cities including Atlanta (July 30), Washington, DC (August 1), New York (August 6,7 & 8), San Francisco (August 27), Los Angeles (August 29) and wrapping back in Florida’s West Palm Beach (Sept 12). Joining Hammond on the tour will be Kenyatta Hill & Culture and Inner Circle.
Known to many as the originator of “lover’s rock,” Hammond has been writing, producing and pouring out his smoky-sweet voice over every kind of riddim track for over three decades. He continues to top the charts, most recently with the 2008 release A MOMENT IN TIME which Allmusic called “another fine album from one of Jamaica's finest singers” He has sold out some of the country’s largest venues including New York’s Radio City Music Hall.
The single “I Feel Good” from A MOMENT IN TIME has remained in the Top 5 on reggae charts since the release. Hammond can also be found on the summer’s must-have reggae compilation REGGAE GOLD 2010, along with other chart toppers as Damian Marley and Nas, Shaggy, Etana and Gyptian. VP Records recently reissued Hammond’s 1979 JUST A MAN, which has been praised as a “triumphant reissue.”
