Director's Notes

On behalf of North Country Education Services, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you back for the opening of a new school year. Here at NCES, we are excited about the prospects for public education in the coming years and look forward to assisting North Country Districts and Staff to rise to the challenges set for them by State and Federal mandates and by the technological and learning revolution that has impacted us all. Toward that end, NCES is committed to providing our member Districts the very best in programs and services. I would also like to express my appreciation and thanks to the many dedicated, hard working and talented individuals who serve K-12 students of the North Country. Without question you positively impact the lives of students’ and their families.

To underscore this point, I am reminded of Barack Obama’s first commencement speech as President of the United States at Arizona State University. In his remarks the President noted that we need a fundamental change in perspective and attitude, one that values substance over appearance and character over celebrity. He made mention of the body of work of each person and how it is not done because you have a degree, or get a promotion or are given a title, even one that says President of the United States. That such a “body of work” or carbon print you leave, consists of daily labor, the many kind and unselfish acts that often go unnoticed, and the choices made both large and small that add up over a lifetime to a lasting legacy. He challenged the graduates to make their mark on the world through service to others. When we serve others, he said it not only improves your community and makes you an integral part of that community, it also inevitably makes you a better person.

In the brief time I have been here, I am convinced that it is you, the Educators and support staff, who epitomize the President’s call for service to others. It is you who best embody the spirit and belief that says the way to serve oneself is to serve others. This gift of giving that quietly tells us that the only way to be truly fulfilled, pleased and happy is to give instead of trying to get. It’s a gift you bring each and every school day to your students and community and in doing so, enriches the lives of all of us.

I wish you all a most enjoyable, productive and rewarding school year.

Assessing Beginning-of-the Year Student Writing

Schools working to improve daily writing, reduce interventions and raise test scores, should consider contracting with Jean Mann. Jean can work with individual teachers to examine and assess students’ beginning-of-the-year writing samples in order to determine specific weaknesses in the varied elements or traits of the content. She will help to bring an understanding as to why these weaknesses occur and how to improve them and the quality of a whole piece.

Curriculum Development to Match the New NH Common Core ELA Standards

Here's an opportunity to assess the current literacy in your school for gaps and weak areas, along with areas of low test scores. It may be time to revise, update your curriculum and align it with the new NH Common Core ELA Standards (K-12) for the purpose of establishing strong, consistent grade-level teaching objectives.

Contact Lori Langlois, lori@ncedservices.org, for more information on consulting with Jean Mann.
