EARTHDANCE THIS WEEKEND IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA. NOT TO BE MISSED!
|
|
|
The 14th annual Earthdance Festival will take place at the renowned Black Oak Ranch, a property rich in native history and old growth oak trees. The ranch has been home to Earthdance for the past 8 years, but due to expanding audiences, the festival will be moving to a larger facility for 2011. Often described as a festival that combines the artistic liberation of Burning Man with the socially responsible conscience of the Oregon Country Fair, the festival has gained international recognition as one of the best “boutique” festivals on the west coast of the USA, with sell out shows each year.
For 2010, Earthdance Northern California will unite with over 350 locations in 60 countries across the world to create the most conscious global festival of our time. To make this year a “grand farewell” to remember, the festival will present an incredible line up of conscious musicians, visual artists, DJ's, speakers and activists, who believe in a sustainable future for our planet. Working with the theme of “unity in diversity”, the festival will host 5 music stages and will feature high profile conscious artists from many genres of the international music scene, including World, Electronica, Hip Hop, Folk and Jazz. Also included will be an indigenous elder’s council, made up of indigenous elders from many nations, who will share wisdom and sacred ceremony.
An important part of the festival will be a compelling educational component called the “Activist Alley”, where festival patrons can interact with both local and international non-profit groups. These organizations will share information and workshops on relevant global and local issues, inspiring local participants to take a stand for the future of our planet.
A highlight of the festival will be a synchronized global link up, taking place on Saturday the 18th, when at 4pm (PST), Earthdance California will synchronize with over 350 locations in 60 countries.
At this precise moment, a specially created song called the “prayer for peace” will be played in every location at the same time. The festival will also feature a wide variety of ‘Healthy’ vendors supplying many types of international foods and eco wares. Shaded camping and HOT showers are also available to festival attendees.
Part proceeds from the festival will be donated to the Earthdance non-profit, A California based 501c3 organization.

ANGELA LATTI RELEASES SELF-TITLED ALBUM
|
|
|
Reggae Debut Album Tackles Female Empowerment, Spirituality, Love, Sex and Economic Hardship
Available on CD and iTunes today, Angela Latti’s self-titled debut album reaches out to listeners from a unique triad perspective: That of a musical artist, an entrepreneur and a feminist. Angela’s 11-track album tackles important issues such as female empowerment, the complications of love, spirituality vs. religion, economic hardship… even straight up sex! Whatever the topic, each song deals with a real-life issue. Yet, all the while, the songs have infectious beats you often can’t get out of your mind.
Angela Latti is a self-made woman who has made a comfortable place for herself in this world and uses her strength to uplift women and enlighten men through her music. In fact, the release of this album – from start to finish- was choreographed independently, released on her own Yemalla record label.
Her music mixes a number of genres and the self-penned lyrics, by all accounts, are moving! Several of her songs carry the theme of empowering women, yet many of her songs are simply fun and uplifting. Through her music, Angela aims to encourage women to have pride, confidence and ambition, but, at the same time, have a sense of humor and not take themselves too seriously.

On why he chose the name Redemption for his new album, Odel explains, “When I was writing the songs for Mind & Body Sold the U.S. was in war times, but now, writing Redemption, the economy has caused a shift in people towards being more conscious and community oriented so I see it as a time of redemption.” Written and arranged by Odel and recorded live at Metalworks studio in Toronto by legendary engineer ‘The Scientest’, Redemption shines from beginning to end.
From “Chronicles”, a classic roots reggae track reminiscent of days past, to the hard-hitting, straight up rock on the feature track “Testify”, mixed with a classic rock ballad on “Change”, this album will satisfy a variety of musical tastes. Redemption is produced by Obelisk Music on Odel’s label Ohm Grown Records and is available worldwide courtesy of Equal Distribution. SOCA LEGEND ARROW PASSES AWAYS
SOURCE: www.winnfm.com
September 15, 2010
Legendary Montserratian artiste and Caribbean icon, Alfonsus "Arrow" Cassell MBE passed away Wednesday at his home in Montserrat after a battle with brain cancer. Flown to Antigua last week when his condition worsened, he was brought back home on Monday, and was surrounded by his family when he died Wednesday morning.
Cassell first performed aged 10 in a concert at the Montserrat Secondary School. He began singing calypso in 1967 and took the Junior Monarch title that year. He took up singing professionally in 1969, and in that year he was runner up in the Montserrat Calypso King competition, going on to win the title the following year (following in the footsteps of his brothers Justin (a.k.a. Hero) and Lorenzo (a.k.a. Young Challenger). He would go on to take the title a total of four times.
He released his first single, "Dance with Me, Woman" in 1972, and set up his own Arrow label in 1973. 1974 saw the release of debut album The Mighty Arrow on Target, followed in 1975 with Arrow Strikes Again. He won the Road March competition at the 1975 St. Kitts festival with "Rummy Song". Arrow began to fuse calypso with other genres such as R&B, Zouk and salsa, resulting in some criticism, with accusations that he was destroying Montserrat's calypso traditions.
In fact, his updating of the genre brought it to a new audience. In 1982, Arrow began working with arranger Leston Paul, and, with his Multi National Force band, recorded the album Hot Hot Hot, the title track, "Hot Hot Hot", becoming his first pan-Caribbean hit and the biggest selling soca hit of all time. It was adopted as the theme song of the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico, and was later covered by David Johansen (in his Buster Poindexter alter ego), Menudo, and Babla & Kanchan. He capitalized on this success with 1983's Heat album, and the "Rub Up" single, and 1984's Soca Savage album, from which the international hit "Long Time" was taken, a top 30 hit in the United Kingdom.
He enjoyed further chart success in the UK with a remixed version of "Hot Hot Hot", which reached number 38 (the original had stalled at number 58). By this time, Arrow was also incorporating Latin brass into his music. Subsequent albums also saw the incorporation of merengue (1986's Heavy Energy), and rock (1988's Knock Dem Dead). Heavy Energy was his first album for Island Records' Mango label, with two further albums released on the label.
He was also selected at one of the artistes to before at the OAS Summit in Trinidad and Tobago, attended by then newly elected US President Barack Obama. Arrow also established himself as a businessman in Montserrat, owning the Arrow's Manshop store in Plymouth. When this was destroyed by the Soufriere Hills volcanic eruption, he relocated to Salem. He organized a fundraising calypso festival on the island in 1996, in response to the devastation caused by the volcano.

NICHOLAS Da SILVA'S GRAPHIC NOVEL SERIES 'DREAD AND ALIVE' FEATURING DREW MCINTOSH
|
|
|
THE 38th EPISODE OF NICHOLAS Da SILVA'S GRAPHIC NOVEL SERIES 'DREAD AND ALIVE' FEATURING DREW MCINTOSH: JAMAICAN SUPER HERO
Dread & Alive....is an ongoing graphic novel series about Jamaican Super Hero Drew McIntosh. If you missed any episodes, click here to read:
Cudjoe summoned two warriors to assist them in their search and together, the group followed Cuffee into the heart of the forest to find Drew. The group moved single file along the narrow, footpath, traveling for nearly two hours before arriving at the spot where Cuffee last saw Drew. It was nightfall now and the air had become cool and damp, brought on by the return of the undertaker’s breeze blowing back to the sea.
Cuffee took a few steps forward then turned around. “He was standing over there,” Cuffee said, pointing to a section of the forest, which appeared disturbed. Philip and Maria wasted no time scouring the underbrush for their son. Cuffee and the two warriors follow thereafter. Cudjoe decided to search in another section of the forest. As he moved through the thick foliage, he became aware of the sudden silence that blanketed the forest. He then sensed a familiar presence, a presence he did not welcome. Looking around the forest, he knew ShadowCatcher was near.
Meanwhile, Maria was frantically searching through the tall grass and scratchbush that covered the forest. As she pushed back a strand of thick foliage, she suddenly jumped back, shrieking in horror. Lying on the ground by her foot was one of Drew’s shoes. There was no sign of Drew though. Philip raced over to see what had startled Maria.
“He’s gone,” she said, pointing at the shoe.
Philip crouched down and picked up the shoe. “No. This is a good sign,” he said, trying to convince himself that Drew was okay. He stood up and faced Maria. “It just means he’s close by. We’ll find him.” Philip glanced up and saw Cudjoe waving them over.
“What is it,” Philip asked, being Maria helped Philip up and the two headed over to where Cudjoe was standing. As the drew closer to the chief, they could see Drew standing in the distance with a tall, shadowy figure.
“Drew!!” Maria yelled. She raced toward her son.
“Wait, Maria,” Philip shouted, racing after her.
Drew remained standing beside ShadowCatcher, watching his parents as they raced down the footpath toward him. ShadowCatcher stood quietly, his face concealed by his hood.
“Are you okay,” Maria said, falling to her knees as she gave Drew a big hug.
“I’m okay,” he said, hugging his mother tightly.
“You had us worried there, son!” Philip said, running his hands through his dreads. “He didn’t harm or touch you in anyway, did he? Philip asked, looking up at ShadowCatcher, shrouded in his dark robe, his face entirely concealed by his hood.
Drew shook his head no.
“We promise not to leave you out of our sight again,” Maria said, brushing the caked dirt from his face and straightening his clothes. She kissed him on his forehead several times then stood up and looked back at ShadowCatcher for a moment. Shaking uncontrollably, and wondering whether she should thank him or not, she elected not to say a word to the Obeahman. Instead, she took Drew by the arm and led him away. Philip stared at ShadowCatcher for a moment then joined Maria and Drew.

THE FIRST SINGLE FROM THE UPCOMING EASY STAR DEBUT ALBUM BY SINGER/SONGWRITER CAS HALEY IS AVAILABLE ON ITUNES
|
|
|
The first single from the upcoming Easy Star debut album by singer/songwriter Cas Haley is available on iTunes, Amazon and other digital retailers. The single features three tracks: the single itself, "Better," along with a reggae remix by our own Michael G and a non-album bonus track, a live version of Peter Tosh’s "Legalize It."
The full 13 song album, Connection, can be pre-ordered (release date is Sept 14) on iTunes, Amazon or at Easystar.com.
Cas first came to national attention in 2007 as a contestant on the second season of the television show America’s Got Talent, where he finished in second place and, in the process, garnered a huge audience of fans.
Cas’s debut album, which came out quickly to capitalize on the success of AGT, sold over 30,000 units in the US without a marketing campaign or extensive distribution. For Connection, Cas wanted to make a timeless album so he retreated to his home town of Paris, Texas, and took two years to create a record that honestly represented who he is as an artist. The process was long, but Cas has emerged with a strong musical statement.
For Easy Star, the leading U.S.-based independent reggae label, Connection continues an evolution of the company. “We have been stretching further from being strictly a roots-reggae-only label for a while, with progressive bands and artists like John Brown’s Body, Tommy T and The Black Seeds on the roster,” says Easy Star CEO Eric Smith.
“Cas’s sound is unique, accessible, and a great way to keep expanding the Easy Star audience. And it’s not often we come across a singer-songwriter this talented, regardless of genre, so we had to work with Cas.” The label’s musical director, Michael Goldwasser, remixed a version of the single “Better” in a hardcore roots reggae style, which is being included as a bonus track. www.easystar.com

CHEF MAYRA - RAW VEGAN ICE CREAM
|
|
|
Making raw vegan ice cream is very easy and takes only a minute or two.
You will need for the RAW VEGAN Ice Cream · 1 large frozen banana (or 1 and 1/2 medium) · 2-3 tablespoons of water · Toppings: chopped nuts, shredded coconut, dried currants, etc…
Cut the frozen banana into chunks and add the water. Blend in your blender until smooth. I like to toss in chopped nuts, dried currants, shredded coconut or even fresh (or frozen) fruit and berries after the banana has been pureed. To make chocolate ice cream, I add three tablespoons of ground cacao before blending the banana.
A great alternative to banana is the durian, which has a creamy texture and vanilla-almond flavor that blends well with cinnamon, ginger, coconut and especially cacao. Blend durian with your favorite ingredients in a blender and then freeze in a freezer-safe dish until it is an ice cream texture. Raw vegan ice cream is simple, nutritious, easy to make and decadent!

PHILADELPHIA PA: BOB MARLEY'S DAUGHTER PLEADS GUILTY TO POSSESSING MARIJUANA PLANTS
|
|
|
|
By Kathleen Brady Shea Inquirer Staff Writer
The daughter of the late reggae icon Bob Marley does not trumpet her famous father, but she shares some of his beliefs - ones that have landed her in trouble, her attorney said Wednesday.
Makeda J. Marley, 29, of Chester County, pleaded guilty Tuesday to possessing a passel of marijuana plants - 11 mature, three juvenile - and to tampering with evidence when police came to her Caln Township residence on Sept. 8, 2008.
Lawyer Thomas K. Schindler said that his client, like her father, believes marijuana has religious value.
"She doesn't go around telling people she's Bob Marley's daughter, but if it comes up, she acknowledges it," Schindler said. "It troubles her that this is illegal."
The elder Marley, whose hits included "One Love," "Buffalo Soldier," and "I Shot the Sheriff," died of cancer in 1981 at 36. He practiced Rastafarianism, a faith that generally regards Africa as the promised land and the late Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie I as a divine figure. Some Rastafarians smoke marijuana as a sacrament.
Were it not for family ties, Makeda Marley probably would have moved to an area more accepting of marijuana use, Schindler said. But her mother and the father of her 5-year-old son live in this area, he said.
According to the criminal complaint, Marley, who awaits trial on drunken-driving charges, let police search her basement and went to get a key, but was then seen trying to remove a plant from the premises.
Schindler said Marley's Oct. 25 sentencing by Chester County Court Judge Thomas G. Gavin may be lively.
"I think the prosecutor [Assistant District Attorney Carlos Barraza] will argue for jail time. I'm going to present a number of people who know her," Schindler said.
He described his client as a devoted mother and accomplished ceramist with dreams of running a bed-and-breakfast.

CONNECTICUT: HARTFORD-BASED ARTISTS, LABEL ENJOY UNPRECEDENTED SUCCESS IN JAMAICA
"With nine major radio stations in Jamaica now playing various cuts from Capsicum Records’ debut “Reggae In-Fusion Album #1,” it was inevitable than some singles would begin to emerge as hits,” says label CEO and A&R Director Roger Meltzer.
Meltzer noted that weekly song charts published on the island August 6 showed “Just As I Am” by Misteree bursting onto Richie B.’s Hot 102-FM Jamaica Music Countdown at #24 and onto the Stampede Street Chart at #14 (Aug 2) with Stampede again naming her as “Artist To Watch” with her picture in the center of the chart as they first did in June.
In the following weeks, Richie B. had Misteree at #23(Aug. 13), at #20 (Aug. 20), at #18 (Aug. 27), at #16 (Sept. 3), and at #15 (Sept. 10). Stampede had Cuban Cohiba as “Artist To Watch” (Aug. 9), with Misteree climbing to #12 (Aug. 9), #11 (Aug. 16), at #10 (Aug. 23), at #9 (Aug 30), and at #8 (Sept. 6). “I am delighted and thrilled for our artists, my co-writers and co-producers; but I can’t pretend I’m completely surprised by the results of all the talent and hard work we’ve assembled and invested into this inaugural CD," Meltzer adds.
"Our tireless promotion people have done a superb job down there, too.” Both charts are extremely influential beyond the shores of Jamaica and are frequently published on music websites on every continent. And if the growing demand for Misteree and Cuban tee shirts in Jamaica is a barometer of their popularity “Enuf Is Enough” by Cuban Cohiba is close behind. Cuban’s message song about society’s tolerance of gun violence on urban streets soared when civil unrest and a subsequent national state of emergency erupted in Tivoli Gardens in West Kingston this spring. “But it’s not true that his song was written in response to that event,” said Meltzer.
“In fact, the song was already playing on Jamaican radio stations for three months and was actually inspired by the fatal 2009 shooting of an infant in the crossfire of rival drug gangs during the Caribbean Independence Day Parade in Hartford. Cuban brought me the song two days later. We held up its release until February because we wanted to build a track for the song that reflected the tragic feel and sounds of this all-too-familiar bloodshed on our streets.”
Along with other cuts from the album, the two songs can be heard on Hot 102-FM with Richie B., Irie-FM with Big A and G.T. Taylor, Roots 96.1-FM with Dudley Thompson and Isis, Zip-FM with Bambino, Mello-FM with Barry G. and Franko, Linkz-FM with Deja Vu and Dadre-Anne, Vybz-FM with Sir W. One, and, just added, FAME-FM with Inferno and BEST-FM with String.
Closer to home, “Just As I Am” remained at #1 (Aug 30, Sept 6) on the 101.5-FM EnergyRadio live weekly Showcase and Music Countdown in Hartford. Song position there is determined by audience text message votes as well as by listener requests. Hartford's Busyradio 103.3-FM’s chart has her at #5. Cuban's song also took off in the Midwest after a recent concert tour of reggae festivals in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, where he shared the stage with the Governor, and Ohio, where he autographed a guitar for the Rock & Roll Museum Hall of Fame.
The two songs are now gaining airplay in Africa and Japan. “Both songs still have a long way to go in the reggae/dancehall genre even before we can mount an effort to cross them over into the mainstream,” Meltzer added, “but they are certainly heading in the right direction.
I hope people will also take the time to listen to Cuban’s extraordinary rendition of ‘Born on Third Base,’ the song American tourists vacationing in the resorts of Negril call ’the baseball song.’ Of course the song isn’t about baseball at all, just uses a baseball metaphor for those born into wealth and privilege who believe all their inherited advantages of ‘social capital’ are personal accomplishments.“

The doors open at 8 and the music starts at 9pm with Nyabinghi Drummers and then opening act, Sister I-Live. $15 advance tickets can be purchased at Ashkenaz. At the door, the tickets are $20; kids under 12 are free with paid adult, and students with student I.D. card are also $15 at the door. The Ashkenaz Music & Dance Community is located at 1317 San Pablo Ave
In Berkeley, CA 94702 (510) 525-5054.
Tosh 1, the youngest son of the late great Reggae icon Winston Hubert McIntosh, aka Peter Tosh, was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1980. He moved to Boston in 1985. He is currently an economics major at Northwestern University. After a great summer of festival performances, promoters are already asking the young Tosh back for more shows shortly after therafter.
“In Boston, Tosh 1 was introduced to rap and "That was when music was real,” says Tosh 1, who started mixing the sounds of reggae with loops and samples of hip-hop in high school. Tosh has a love-hate relationship with the hip-hop genre, and believes many of its artists have gone astray, seduced by major record deals, fast cars and expensive clothes.
"The same revolutionary spirit that once inspired me has been transformed into everything it once detested"; says Tosh 1.
In 2000, Tosh 1 decided to record a couple of tracks in the studio, creating a hybrid sound that blended urban sounds, but still stayed true to the tenets of reggae and its messages of social change, activism and spirituality. "It was like second nature, like magic"; says Tosh 1. "People just fell in love with it."
Tosh 1 is a revolutionary artist with an impetus to right wrongs. "I give people food for thought" explains Tosh 1, "about waking people up. I am going to expose the system for what it is. We have to be more conscious of our life here on earth and stop complaining."
Tosh 1's debut album Babylon Burning is slated for release in spring 2011. He is currently back and forth to the studio, working on his new single "Wicked a Go Bun".
This summer 2010, Tosh 1 was very busy on the US festival circuit. He headlined the Maple Ridge Carribean Festival at the Memorial Peace Park in Vancouver, BC. Canada. He also performed on the Mid-West Reggaefest and the South Bend Reggaefest, and in Minnesota he performed on the Bayfront Reggae Festival, and in upstate New York, he performed on The Gig in the Sky Festival.
He was also booked this summer on the Montreal Reggaefest in eastern Canada. Tosh 1 traveled to Jamaica four times this summer for festivals there - The Life Fest, put on by Spragga Benz as a tribute to his son who was murdered, The Western Consciousness show, Bunny Wailer's show and The Negril Escape Summer Concert Series. Tosh 1 was embraced and very warmly received in Jamaica, the land of his birth. This October western U S tour will be a special treat for all those Peter Tosh fans who have been waiting for Peter's next release, and for the younger generations who never got to see Peter Tosh perform live in the flesh. Peter's youngest son, Tosh 1 has now taken the torch and moved ahead with youthful strength and vigor to carry on the work of his father.

JUNIOR KELLY : : RED POND
|
|
BBC Review "A triumphant return from one of Jamaican music’s most consistent performers."
Angus Taylor 2010-04-14
The gritty yet soulful Junior Kelly has long been one of Jamaican music’s most consistent and well-loved cultural performers. A tantalising five years on from 2005’s Tough Life, Red Pond – named after his Spanish Town ghetto community and produced by Dusty Miller and the Firehouse Crew – marks his triumphant return.
Much has changed since Kelly last cut a long player. Poor physical sales, the resulting search for alternative music industry business models, and the saturation of Auto-Tune have all created a very different environment for reggae and dancehall artists to offer their wares.
But the lanky Rasta singer-deejay takes it in his stride. He and the melismatic warbler Lukie D claim ownership of a US hip hop-style rhythm on She’s Gone. There’s even a touch of Auto-Tune on his vocal for My African Child, yet never to the point where his distinctive tones get lost.
Lyrically, Junior is in punitive fettle. He castigates those who diverge from the righteous path, although the scolding usually comes atop an upbeat tune – check the ska-infused Slackness and first single Nuthin’ Wrong with the World.
His choice of duet partners is impeccable (a Sam Cooke-channelling Ras Shiloh and well-matched female chanter Queen Ifrica). And as with Tough Life, there are both perennial rhythms reworked (How Better Ah Go Home on Java; Murderer on a steel pan-garnished Heavenless) and flirtations with non-Jamaican sounds (Believe in Your Self). But at the heart of the album are rough-hewn sufferer’s roots pieces like Waan Lef’ de Ghetto and Stumblin Blocks, aimed at poor people around the globe. Combining daring yet devilishly catchy vocal melodies and stress patterns with an unshakeable flow, Junior Kelly is back and maintaining his form.

Bittah : : Name of Song: T.G.I.F ( Thank God Its Friday)
|
|
Upcoming artiste Bittah has bridged the first challenging phase of his career convincing his hometown folks that he is unique and made for the Dancehall/Reggae industry.
Last Saturday, September 4th, Bittah rocked his hometown crowd with an outstanding performance at the annual Young Money Promotions house party event held in Red Hills, St. Andrew. Working with DJ Currency and DJ Four Five who set the tone for his performance, Bittah could do no wrong.
After being called to perform, the young artiste hit the stage with his popular T.G.I.F. Tremma House produced track and literally flattened the venue. He then dropped another hometown favorite, “Nah Buy Gal” to thunderous uproar and from there on, the applauses were so overwhelming one could hardly hear his introduction of the other tunes.
Bittah’s 35 minutes performance was well received and left the young artiste feeling quite satisfied that he has made his mark in his community especially after many questioned his ability when it was discovered that his ambition was to become an Internationally acclaimed Dancehall/Reggae artiste.
Bittah songs can be purchased on New Image Promotions All Star website.

You Can't Blame The Youth (Peter Tosh)
Your teachin' youths to learn in school How a cow flies over the moon You teachin' youths to learn in school How a dish run away with a spoon, so
You can't blame the youth You can't fool the youth You can't blame the youth of today
You teach the youths about Christopher Colombus And you said he was a very great man You teach the youths about Marco Polo And you said he was a very great man, so
You can't blame the youth You can't fool the youth You can't blame the youth, not at all
When every Christmas comes around You buy the youth a fancy toy gun When every Christmas comes around You buy the youth a fancy toy gun, so
You can't blame the youth You can't fool the youth You can't blame the youh, not at all
You teach the youths about Pirate Hawkins You teach the youths about Pirate Morgan And you said he was a very great man You teacher usedteach about Christopher Colombus And you said he was a very great man You teacher used teach about Marco Polo, so
You can't blame the youth You can't fool the youth You can't blame the youh of today
