Meta and the Cornerstones

[http://www.myspace.com/metaandthecornerstones] continue their monthly residency at 92YTribeca with new artists each time out, friends and collaborators who will both share the stage and perform their own sets.

Led by the indomitable Meta Dia, who is Senegalese and sings in a mixture of French, English, Wolof, and Fulani, and with members converging from the west coast of Africa, North America, Asia and the Middle East, the band creates a unifying and uplifting experience with its feel-good reggae sound that also embraces soul, Afropop, and hip-hop -- a mix of influences as eclectic as their backgrounds.

This month's special guest is Zongo Junction [http://www.myspace.com/zongomusic],  a powerhouse 13-piece ensemble that embodies the richness of Brooklyn’s musical diversity by melding traditional West African rhythms with Funk, Jazz and Soul from the U.S. Heavily influenced by Nigerian superstar, political activist and afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, Zongo Junction gets audiences riled up and dancing at every show they put on.

Where: 92Y Tribeca 200 Hudson Street , NYC NY 10013
When: Nov 6/8:00pm doors, 9:00pm show

KY-MANI MARLEY-CURRENTLY RECORDING NEW ALBUM EVOLUTION OF A REVOLUTION AT TUFF GONG STUDIOS

Currently Recording New Album Evolution of a Revolution at Tuff Gong Studios

Joins Andrew Tosh for Historic Musical Collaboration

Featured on New Recording with Reggae Singer Protoje

Special Performance at Beat Breast Cancer Music Festival

(October 13, 2010) -- Fresh from headlining performances at Reggae On The Rocks in Colorado, Festival International De Rhythmes Du Monde in Quebec, Rock al Parque in Colombia, plus two special fundraising events at the Brooklyn Children’s Museum in New York, GRAMMY-nominated Ky-Mani Marley has unveiled recording news and announced several personal appearances.

Ky-Mani is currently recording songs for his next album Evolution of a Revolution at Tuff Gong Studios in Kingston, Jamaica. This marks the first time that Ky-Mani has worked at the world-renowned studios founded by his father in 1965. “Recording at Tuff Gong is very meaningful to me because this is where it all started. My father built this studio not only to accommodate his children but also the less fortunate in the community. I felt at this point in my career it’s a necessary move to make and I’m happy I’ve been able to accomplish that. Now the journey continues,” said Ky-Mani. Known for his unique style of rock/soul/hip-hop infused reggae sound that transcends cultural lines, Evolution of a Revolution is expected to continue the musical exploration and features collaborations with artists from different musical genres. “This album will continue to highlight my various influences and will be a blend of genres that will touch the inner-soul of each listener,” Ky-Mani stated.

In another first, Ky-Mani has also joined forces with Andrew Tosh for a very special collaboration. The offspring of Bob Marley and Peter Tosh are recording together on “Lessons In My Life,” the lead single off Andrew’s acoustic tribute album to his father, titled Legacy. The two second-generation singers take turns on lead vocals on the updated interpretation of this timeless anthem. The song is especially prophetic as it was released on the album No Nuclear War only weeks before Peter’s untimely death. Fans should look for more collaboration between the two in the near future.

Ky-Mani is also featured on reggae singer Protoje’s latest single, “Rasta Love.” Produced by Donovan “Don Corleone” Bennett, “Rasta Love” is a powerful, conscious dancehall-meets-lover’s rock combination and will be included on Protoje’s upcoming album The 7 Year Itch.

Staying true to his humanitarian vision, Ky-Mani will lend his talents to the Basia Sports Foundation as they host the first annual Beat Breast Cancer Music Festival in Trinidad and Tobago on October 31. The foundation is a part of an organization that produces Basia and Basia Sports magazines as well as the popular Caribbean talk show, “The Basia Show” hosted by breast cancer survivor, Alicia Powell. The objective of the event is to change the thinking and approach to breast cancer for Caribbean people, and to help create awareness that the disease is beatable and curable. To be televised throughout the English speaking Caribbean, the event will raise funds for women for CT Pet Scans and reconstructive surgeries, because often times women are not diagnosed or treated accurately post detection and treatment. www.basiamagazine.com .

Finally, Ky-Mani also continues his tour promoting his memoir Dear Dad, released by Farrah Gray Publishing on February 6, 2010, what would have been his father Bob Marley’s 65th birthday.

(VP RECORDS/GREENSLEEVES, NEW YORK) - A stellar cast of artists light up Hi Grade Ganja Anthems 3, the third volume in the successful series that celebrates the virtues of marijuana, available from Greensleeves Records on November 2, 2010. Its release on Election Day in the U.S. is no coincidence as Proposition 19 is up for vote in California, which if passed, would tax the sale of marijuana and regulate adult use in the state. Reggae Singer Breaks from Tour to Honor the U.S. Secretary of State in Washington, D.C.

(VP RECORDS, NEW YORK) - Reggae singer/songwriter Duane Stephenson was recently invited by the World Food Program (WFP) to perform in honor of the United States Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton. The event took place at the George McGovern Leadership Award ceremony in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, October 5.

Stephenson was at the tail end of his U.S. tour with the Wailers, and the two parties previously teamed up for a song that manifested a partnership with the WFP. "The Wailers and I are partners with the World Food Program," says Stephenson.  "Our song 'A Step for Mankind' has helped to spread the message of the need for more action in addressing the issue of world hunger."

Stephenson was thus invited to perform at the ceremony that included political dignitaries and social activists from around the world at the prestigious event, where Secretary Clinton was presented with The George McGovern Leadership Award for her work to curb global hunger.

Stephenson reveals he is humbled and excited by the experience. "It's so inspiring to be in the company of global politicians and dedicated corporate partners who share the same values and aspirations to eradicate hunger," states Stephenson. "Food is a common bond that unites every single life form on this planet, we all require it to live, yet a billion people each night go to bed hungry and 25,000 of them die."

Stephenson disclosed his work with the World Food Program will continue as he sees the issue of world hunger as one that is very important to him. "I was happy to be there to see Secretary Clinton get this award as she has fought for this issue for years now. Hunger affects a billion of our brothers, sisters and children in 80 countries. This award will bring added attention and raise awareness of the issue."

Duane Stephenson just wrapped up touring the U.S. as the opening act for the legendary Wailers, and promoting his sophomore album Black Gold, released by VP Records on September 28, 2010. Black Gold is the highly anticipated follow-up to Stephenson's debut album From August Town, which was released by VP Records in 2007 and was hailed as one of that year's best reggae albums.

CHEF MAYRA - VEGAN PORRIDGE
Here is my favorite, easiest recipe REALLY

 1 C rolled old-fashioned oats
1 C cooked (leftovers!) rice, brown or white
 2 Tbs oat bran
 2-1/4 C water

Add all ingredients to rice cooker, stir gently to combine, set for the  porridge cycle.

When the cycle is complete, spoon into a bowls and top as desired. I do like some rice milk, flax seeds, and a dash of maple syrup, but there are several  recipes for traditional Japanese rice porridge which includes vegetables. It is really, really good!

"RISEUP" AWARD-WINNING FILM - JAMAICA PREMIERE
Seven years ago, Montego Bay businessman Mark Hart invited his old college friend, Luciano Blotta, an Argentinian filmmaker, to visit Jamaica and to bring his camera.  With no experience of Jamaica or reggae music, Blotta was immediately struck by the Island’s color and inner beauty.

The film he would make, along with his relationship with the Island, evolved into a love affair with the sights and sounds of Jamaica.  Although RiseUp is essentially a documentary spotlighting Jamaican music, the film transcends genre and niche, seamlessly weaving three distinct stories into one inspiring feature-length movie that is both dramatic and vibrantly explosive.

Upon viewing the film earlier in the year at a private screening on the Island, Chris Blackwell stated that “RiseUp is the best Jamaican film since The Harder They Come”.  International audiences have echoed the sentiment saying that RiseUp is like a ‘Jamaican Hoop Dreams' and the best movie to come out of the Caribbean in many years.  Both Jamaican newspapers, The Gleaner and The Observer, have praised the film, with accolades like “A New Classic.”  Directed and produced by Luciano Blotta, and produced by Darrin Holender, the film features appearances and performances by both emerging and legendary artists, with music by Sizzla, Daddigon, Sly & Robbie, Richie Spice, Turbulence and many others.

Always an audience favorite, RiseUp has toured the world for 18 months as an officially selected festival and special event film, screening in over 20 countries and winning awards such as the 2009 AFI/DISCOVERY SILVERDOCS Best Music Documentary Award.  Earlier this year, RiseUp was chosen by New York’s Lincoln Center Film Society to celebrate Black History Month and a one-hour version of the film was broadcasted by many television networks worldwide including the BBC.  RiseUp’s performances worldwide have revealed a special connection between the film and audiences from diverse backgrounds with people dancing, laughing and crying in their seats. Core reggae audiences and music documentary fans have lauded the film for its authenticity and entertainment value, while general audiences have praised the film for its original storytelling, inspirational tone and beautiful imagery and sounds.

In an interview with Australian press, Blotta stated, "I saw how much talent there is [in Jamaica], how flamboyant, different and creative all these people were, and it really inspired me." He is excited to finally share his seven-year project with audiences in Jamaica hoping that Jamaicans will appreciate this priceless portrayal of a uniquely proud country.  Entertainment industry veterans like BBC’s Nick Fraser and HBO director/producer Marty Callner, have commended Blotta's efforts as an invaluable contribution to both the Jamaican culture as well as the medium of documentary cinema.  It is no surprise that Blotta has found a home on the Island, making time to shoot videos for Jamaica’s talent and business communities.  He hopes that RiseUp can be a testament to Jamaica as a positive and inspirational experience for Jamaicans and non-Jamaicans alike.

The Jamaica Premiere of “Rise Up” will be held at the Carib Cinema on October 26th in Kingston and will open in theaters islandwide the following day, Wednesday October 27th.

CAPLETON GIG CANCELED, VIGIL FOR LGBT SUICIDE VICTIMS FRIDAY
The Gay Liberation Network's threats of protest against Jamaican reggae artist Capleton's October 9 gig at the Kinetic Playground have led the Uptown concert venue to cancel the show.

Last week, we reported that GLN sent a letter urging venue owner Jim Gouskos to cancel the gig due to Capleton's contentious lyrical content referring to gay people. One of the artist's songs - titled "Bun out Di Chi Chi," which translates to "Burn the Queer" - were particularly incensing to LGBT activists. The controversial singer's gig rang particularly inappropriate to many following news of a spate of LGBT youth committing suicide in recent weeks.
In a statement released Wednesday, GLN encouraged their supporters to thank the Kinetic Playground for "doing the right thing."

"[We commend the venue's] management for putting human rights principles above dollars by canceling the show," the statement read. "Please put an exclamation point on this victory by buying a drink or two this Saturday night at Kinetic Playground, 1113 W. Lawrence Avenue, so that the management and staff there know that Chicago is willing to stand behind those who follow their conscience."
The news came on the heels of Gouskos' assertion to the Windy City Times that GLN had wrongly accused him of threatening an organization member. He emphasized that he was emotionally hurt by the group's report and is "against anything anyone does that's about hate."

"I'm part of this [Uptown] community," Gouskos said. "This is my community. I'm not doing anything to offend anybody ... Everybody here has worked too hard to change this neighborhood for the better."

In other news, Chicagoans representing a broad coalition of groups have scheduled a candlelight vigil to honor the lives of Tyler Clementi, Asher Brown, Raymond Chase and five other known youth who have taken their lives in recent weeks due, at least in part, to anti-gay bullying. The vigil is set for Friday, Oct. 8, beginning at 7:30 pm., at the DePaul University Lincoln Park campus's quad at the corner of Fullerton and Seminary. More details are available here or on the event's Facebook page.

Vieux Fort, St. Lucia, October 6, 2010 – The Caribbean Recording Industry Association (C.R.I.A) has included reggae-rock singer/songwriter Lenny Deneb on its list of performers to perform at its first annual “Music Submit” the Ocean Breeze Music Festival & Conference to take place in St. John, Antigua, West Indies between November 12-14, 2010. Further information can be accessed at www.oceanbreezemusicfestival.com

C.R.I.A has recognized that Lenny Deneb is an artist with a difference as he pursues to fuse together reggae and rock in the Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Lucky Dube tradition, and by extension stretching the boundaries of reggae music to a new dimension, and so aiming to reach audiences far beyond the Caribbean. “Coupled with this, he is an excellent performer to boot” says Lateko Records Marketing Director Cola Elcock.

To coincide with this live performance, Lateko Records is releasing the compilation CD “Solidarity”. Included on this CD are some of the artist’ most popular songs including “Families At War” described by DJ Incarock as a “classic song”. The CD will also include a number of previously unreleased tracks, and initially will only be available for purchase at the music festival.

Lenny Deneb is a singer/songwriter and ex-founding member of fairly well-acclaimed British reggae band Cygnus, who in recent times has been delivering his own brand of reggae music described by various reviewers as reggae-rock. He is a writer of excellent lyrics, rhythm and melodies as is evident on his debut album “from the sanctuary” and his recent single release “Settle The Score” available on the Indian record label WOA Records compilation CD “Independent #1’s Various Artist, Volume One.

In 2009 Lenny Deneb signed a three year management and marketing deal with WOA Management for the territories of India and the Middle East. This partnership has seen the artist being represented across India and the Middle East with “Settle the Score” the single and video receiving exposure in the said territories At the time of signing, WOA Management had this to say, "Signing on this artist was a very easy decision for the A&R division due to the high energy and infectious music they make", says W.O.A International Marketing director Wanda Alvares. "Lenny joins ranks with the select few top notch reggae rock acts that are now with W.O.A Records."

About Lateko Records

EASY STAR ALL STARS- DUBBER SIDE OF THE MOON
DUBBER SIDE OF THE MOON features bass-heavy remixes of the complete Dub Side of the Moon album by Groove Corporation, Mad Professor, 10 Ft Ganja Plant, Adrian Sherwood, Dubmatix, Scientist and many more. The project grew out of the extensive worldwide touring schedule of the Easy Star All-Stars, as they both evolved the original arrangements of their most celebrated cover album and were exposed to new and developing styles of modern reggae, like dubstep. Honest Tune called the record: “Dub at its finest: dirty, emotional, spacey, disorganized, and beautiful.” The record is also available in colored vinyl as an LP.

Tosh 1, the youngest son of the late great Reggae icon Winston Hubert McIntosh, aka Peter Tosh, was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1980. He moved to Boston in 1985. He is currently an economics major at Northwestern University. After a great summer of festival performances, promoters are already asking the young Tosh back for more shows shortly after therafter.

“In Boston, Tosh 1 was introduced to rap and "That was when music was real,”  says Tosh 1, who started mixing the sounds of reggae with loops and samples of hip-hop in high school. Tosh has a love-hate relationship with the hip-hop genre, and believes many of its artists have gone astray, seduced by major record deals, fast cars and expensive clothes.

"The same revolutionary spirit that once inspired me has been transformed into everything it once detested"; says Tosh 1.

In 2000, Tosh 1 decided to record a couple of tracks in the studio, creating a hybrid sound that blended urban sounds, but still stayed true to the tenets of reggae and its messages of social change, activism and spirituality. "It was like second nature, like magic"; says Tosh 1. "People just fell in love with it."

Tosh 1 is a revolutionary artist with an impetus to right wrongs. "I give people food for thought" explains Tosh 1, "about waking people up. I am going to expose the system for what it is. We have to be more conscious of our life here on earth and stop complaining."

Tosh 1's debut album Babylon Burning is slated for release in spring 2011. He is currently back and forth to the studio, working on his new single "Wicked a Go Bun".

This summer 2010, Tosh 1 was very busy on the US festival circuit. He headlined the Maple Ridge Carribean Festival at the Memorial Peace Park in Vancouver, BC. Canada. He also performed on the Mid-West Reggaefest and the South Bend Reggaefest, and in Minnesota he performed on the Bayfront Reggae Festival, and in upstate New York, he performed on The Gig in the Sky Festival.

He was also booked this summer on the Montreal Reggaefest in eastern Canada. Tosh 1 traveled to Jamaica four times this summer for festivals there - The Life Fest, put on by Spragga Benz as a tribute to his son who was murdered, The Western Consciousness show, Bunny Wailer's show and The Negril Escape Summer Concert Series. Tosh 1 was embraced and very warmly received in Jamaica, the land of his birth. This October western U S tour will be a special treat for all those Peter Tosh fans who have been waiting for Peter's next release, and for the younger generations who never got to see Peter Tosh perform live in the flesh. Peter's youngest son, Tosh 1 has now taken the torch and moved ahead with youthful strength and vigor to carry on the work of his father.

NUBIAN : : NUBIAN
"The diversification of my music is a direct result of my life's experiences"

Nubian, was born Sean Alexander Wallace to a family from the parish of St. Andrew Jamaica on February 6, 1983. As a youth Nubian spent some turbulent years living in a multicultural community in South Jamaica Queens New York. His first exposure to music was in his basic school days; making his way to rehearsal with his "gunny sack" (instrument case) playing the Alto sax in his school band and feeling the instinctual vibe of a future performer.

Continuing his studies and receiving an athletic scholarship, Nubian was still focused on his musical quest. He became a member of the Jazz Ensemble at York College. It was at this time he began playing the guitar, writing and recording original music. Shortly after graduating College Nubian faced an up hill battle trying to find his place in a very competitive music industry. But through diligence, perseverance  and faith, as a young artist he has already worked on shows with some of  the industries best.

This budding Reggae Artist never cease to amaze with his profound lyrical composition. Nubian captivates the hearts and minds of listening audiences as he sails along his uncharted journey to the forefront of Reggae. This Singer/Songwriter/Performer dedicates his talents to composing music that entertains the masses. He presents each individual with the challenge of rising to new heights of consciousness and social awareness. His soulful, raspy tone has been described as echoing the cries of humanity. Nubian "The NU One" is here to stay!

"Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet"

"Learn the art of patience. Discipline your thoughts when they are anxious over the outcome of a goal. Impatience breeds anxiety, fear, discouragement & failure. Patience creates confidence, decisiveness, & a rational outlook. This eventually leads to success."
