REGGAE STAR BUJU BANTON FREE ON BAIL IN FLORIDA

Posted: November 10, 2010 TAMPA, FL (AP) -- Jamaican reggae singer Buju Banton is out of jail in Florida to await his retrial on federal drug charges after a son of reggae legend Bob Marley posted his home as bond.

Banton was released Wednesday. He signed an extradition waiver, and he must wear an electronic monitoring device and pay a private security team to ensure that he does not flee the country.

Banton is accused of conspiring to buy cocaine from an undercover officer. He was held without bail after his arrest in December. E-mail This Article to a Friend Print This Article Tell Us What You Think The singer stood trial in September, but jurors said they could not reach a verdict and the judge declared a mistrial. Banton's attorney said he was thrilled Banton could regroup at his Miami-area home before his retrial, scheduled for February.

REVELATIONS

For over 40 years, Grammy® Award winning reggae Icon Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry’s name has become synonymous with experimentation and innovation both as a legendary producer and an influential performer. A towering figure, Lee “Scratch” Perry shaped the dub sound and made reggae music a powerful part of pop culture.

Recorded at Perry’s mountain-top studio in Switzerland and various studio locations in England, Florida and New York City and produced by long-time collaborator Steve Marshall AKA John Saxon for State of Emergency, Ltd., Lee “Scratch” Perry’s new album is entitled REVELATION.  Taking a hands-on approach, Perry not only fleshed out and developed the powerful lyrical content on the album, but also contributed his unmistakable hallmark of mastery of sound including synth programming.

Now in stores on the MEGAWAVE label, REVELATION presents the signature surrealistic and eccentric rhythmic genius of The Mighty Upsetter, featuring 13 of his best new songs in years with Marshall, Duncan & Green, Tim Hill, Keith Richards, George Clinton, Dr Sleepy, Alec Hay, elodieO, Abi Browning, and David Stewart Jones. Highlights include rock n’ roll legend Keith Richards on “Books of Moses” and a Lee “Scratch” Perry duet with George Clinton on “Scary Politicians”.

SONIA POTTINGER PASSES
(Jamaica Gleaner) Sonia Pottinger, who blazed a trail as reggae’s most successful female music producer, died Wednesday evening at her St Andrew home. She was 79 years old.

David Plummer, the youngest of Pottinger’s four children, told The Gleaner that his mother had suffered from Alzheimer’s Disease in recent years. He did not say if it caused her death.

Born in St Thomas, Pottinger was introduced to the music business by her husband L.O. Pottinger, an engineer who had relative success as a producer in the mid-1960s. She went on her own during that period, scoring a massive hit with Every Night, a ballad by singer Joe White.

Pottinger had considerable success in the late 1960s with her Tip Top, High Note and Gay Feet labels. She produced Errol Dunkley’s debut album,

Presenting Errol Dunkley, and hit songs by vocal groups like The Melodians (Swing and Dine), The Gaylads (Hard to Confess) and Guns Fever by The Silvertones.

In 1974, Pottinger bought the Treasure Isle catalogue and operations of pioneer producer Arthur ‘Duke’ Reid. She had even more success in the era of roots-reggae, producing chart-toppers by Marcia Griffiths (Hurting Inside and Stepping Out of Babylon) and Culture (Natty Never Get Weary).

Errol Brown, Reid’s nephew, was engineer for many of Pottinger’s productions in the 1970s. He said she was no pushover in the studio.

Respect
“She loved the music … loved it too much,” Brown said. “She knew what she wanted in the studio, and had a lot of respect for the musicians.”

Musicologist and sound-system operator, Winston ‘Merritone’ Blake, said Pottinger was a sharp businesswoman in a male-dominated field.

COLLIE BUDDZ WITH FULL BAND SHOW IN ARCATA NOV.14TH

Collie Buddz, a Humboldt county favorite, will return for a rare full band show in Arcata on Sunday, November 14th at the Arcata Theatre. The show will feature Collie and his Dj’s backed by the New Kingston Band , up and coming opening act The Hold Up and our local Selecta Prime. Collie Buddz, from the isle of Bermuda, has done something not impossible but something once seemingly very implausible. He’s become the most buzz-worthy current Reggae artist over the past few years Incorporating influences from Hip-Hop to Soca, Collie’s has a rock-solid foundation in Reggae - and its power to connect ghetto reality with the highest heights of human aspiration - that is a rarity even in Jamaica.

But, to say he’s connected to the Caribbean community would be an understatement. Collie Buddz, born Colin Harper, has become the Caribbean culture’s resident ambassador. Touring extensively, Collie’s passport stamps are a relative reflection of the worldwide love for Reggae and Caribbean culture.

From Madison Square Garden to Dubai, Collie Buddz is the definition of an international recording artist. “It was crazy performing in the Middle East. Who would have guessed how big reggae music is there? They knew all my songs,” a jubilant Collie Buddz explains.

He has toured throughout Germany, France, England, Japan, North and South America and the Caribbean. His unique blend of Hip-Hop, Soca and Dancehall underlined with his ever-present passion for the modern Roots Reggae sound has attracted tastemaker supporters all over the world. Reggae pioneer David Rodigan [London] and New York Reggae stalwarts at legendary radio station, Hot 97, Massive B and Short-Man [Heavy Hitters] are just some of his most ardent supporters. Now on the verge of Collie’s sophomore album release, the anticipation is palpable.

Collie excitedly explains. With production by Supa Dups, Massive B and Seanie B among other contributors, Collie’s fans can anticipate Collie’s unique twist on popular music. Tony Kelly [K-Licious], producer of more crossover hits than any other producer in the genre [Sean Paul, Patra, Supercat, Wayne Wonder, Shaggy].

Among friends, Collie is known as a “studio rat,” as given any sort of free time in the schedule, Collie is hunkered down behind the boards of a recording studio. So it comes to no surprise to anyone that Collie is also ready to release a brand new “I was just in Los Angeles finishing a song with Sugar Ray, and I love the vibe on that track,” says Collie of the new mixtape. Also with verses on hit songs by Beyonce, Rihanna and Kid Cudi, the mixtape is sure to give Collie’s fans an appetizer to the entrée of the sophomore album. Doors open at 9:00pm at the Arcata Theatre for this big night of music and exceptional concert.

EARTHDANCE 2011 DATES ANNOUNCED - NEW LOCATION!
Earthdance Northern California
Thank you for an amazing year...
2011 dates announced - Sept 23rd, 24th, 25th
Earthdance (www.earthdancelive.com)
info@earthdancelive.com

Dear Earthdancers,

Our deepest gratitude to everyone who helped make our "grand farewell" our best Earthdance ever. We are totally excited to take the energy of Earthdance to a new level in 2011 and we have included a letter to our community below to share our vision of what is in store.

Wishing you all the best for the Autumn season..!!

Dear Earthdancers,

As you all know we are moving Earthdance to a new location, as we have outgrown our beloved "Black Oak Ranch in Laytonville". Our new home will be at the Solano County Fairgrounds in Vallejo, within easy reach to the whole Bay Area and cities beyond.

We know many people are concerned by the change, as they feel we will lose the spirit of Earthdance by moving to a more urban area. It is true that we will lose the majestic ambiance of a woodland country setting, but we are totally excited by what this new venue has to offer. The new facility will allow us room to grow and will provide large indoor and outdoor venues, plenty of toilets, showers, easy parking and NO DUST. Most of all, the move will also allow us to take the Earthdance mission to a new level by taking our message of global peace and sustainability to a wider audience closer to the city.

The new site has three indoor buildings which will offer entertainment all day and late into the night. The first larger indoor venue has a 3000 capacity and will be transformed into a state of the art electronica temple with art installations, video walls, international DJ's and more. The second indoor venue, also 3000 capacity, has an acoustically treated ceiling and will offer live music, including late night themes such as "New Orleans Jam" sessions, world fusion nights and more. The smaller 500 capacity venue has a carpeted floor where we will host the sacred music stage, home to late night Kirtan and devotional chanting, sacred world music, workshops and more. This venue will also provide all day yoga classes featuring well known international and Bay Area yoga teachers. The main arena is an outdoor grass field with bleachers along the back that will hold about 5000 people and will host our main stage. Outside this venue is a shaded central courtyard where we will present our usual array of fine food vendors while people enjoy acoustic music on a central stage.

All throughout the fairgrounds there are shady lawn areas, wide avenues, and pleasant nooks and cranny's which we will fill with amazing art and devotional altars. Unlike many other fairgrounds where camping is difficult or limited, our new venue will also provide large areas of open campground, including tree lined areas, where people can enjoy the full weekend camping festival experience. We also offer over 100 RV sites, each with power and water, plus a large motel within walking distance.

Overall, we are excited to bring Earthdance closer to the Bay Area while maintaining our ambiance from The Black Oak Ranch. Yes, it is true that we will be leaving behind some incredible memories and a wonderful site, but we will be taking the creative spirit and intention that has created Earthdance Northern California to our new location. We hope you will join us as we take Earthdance to the next level. We promise not to let you down.!!

Please stay tuned at

RITA TO BE GIVEN LIFETIME AWARD
Rita Marley, commonly referred to as a reggae matriarch, is to be honoured at the 17th Annual Caribbean American  Heritage Awards Gala hosted by the Institute of Caribbean Studies (ICS).

Marley will travel to the JW Marriott in Washington DC on Friday, where she will receive the Marcus Garvey  Lifetime Achievement Award. The award is to be given during a gala  dinner at the hotel.

While Marley is most widely known for being  the widow of Bob Marley, she is, in truth, an artiste in her own right, with an extensive career in advocacy.

"Nana Rita was a perfect recipient for our Marcus Garvey award. This award recognises those who unselfishly advocate to empower and to uplift the people of the  Caribbean and Africa," said ICS president and founder, Dr Claire Nelson.

"Throughout  her life, through her music and her numerous actions, Nana Rita (A name  Marley acquired in Ghana) has demonstrated an unconditional will to  help youth, lift the image of Africa on the global stage and assist  Jamaican people. We are honoured that she has accepted this award."

Human empowerment

Each year, the Marcus Garvey Lifetime Achievement Award is presented by ICS  to someone the organisation considers to have demonstrated a commitment  to the principles of human empowerment and unity of people of African  descent.

Reggae artiste Jimmy Cliff, Slinger Francisco, also known  as 'The Mighty Sparrow', and Frederick 'Toots' Hibbert of Toots and the  Maytals, have previously received the award.

Marley is the  executive director and founder of the Bob Marley Foundation and the Rita  Marley Foundation. She transformed the Bob Marley house into the Bob Marley Museum, and manages the Tuff Gong International recording company.

As an artiste, Marley is best known for the part she played as a member of the I Threes.

Marley has also assisted more than 200 African children and has adopted 35 children in Ethiopia.

The  Caribbean American Heritage Awards Gala will be co-hosted by Maureen  Bunyan, anchor of WJLA TV, and John Blake, host of Caribbean Experience  on WHUR FM 96.3.

WINGLESS ANGELS VOLUME ONE AND TWO
Compiled and recorded by Keith Richards

Review by Douglas Heselgrave

Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards re-releases a timeless set of traditional nyabinghi songs and chants

As an experiment, I’ve been playing the Wingless Angels CDs to everyone who stops by our house for about a week now.  As you can imagine, nyabinghi music isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, and reactions have been mixed.

One friend who usually likes reggae offered rather dismissively, ‘I think there’s something wrong with your stereo. I can’t hear anything except for some muffled drumming and some seriously off-key vocals?’  Another friend who’s been going through a very difficult time listened to the first of the two CDs all the way through and said, ‘I feel better, more balanced.  Listening to that slowed me down.  It’s like a great tonic for the soul.’ But don’t let that description scare you; there’s nothing soft or New Agey about this rough and ready set of spirituals.

This collection of traditional songs – with some of the rhythms dating as far back as the 17th century in Uganda - was recorded over the last several years by Keith Richards at his Jamaican home. In 1997, Richards released some of these songs on his own record label as a CD entitled ‘Wingless Angels.’ The collection not only featured some of the greatest ‘spiritual healing’ tunes ever performed, but it was also one of the most important roots based compilations –from a musicological perspective – to be released in several years.  This new updated and expanded set has a much greater breadth than the original and serves as a fine memorial for Justin Hinds, Locksley Whitlock and Jackie Ellis, three of the musicians who contributed to the original release who have since passed on.

Keith Richards has owned a vacation home in Ocho Rios near St. Anne’s Bay, Jamaica for many years now.  One of the country’s traditional rural parishes, St. Anne’s is located right in the heart of roots reggae country and is a stone’s throw away from the birthplaces of such legendary reggae musicians as Bob Marley and Burning Spear.  Not surprisingly, it didn’t take long for the guitarist to meet and begin to play music with many of the local musicians, but rather than seek out the next big name in reggae as he and Mick Jagger did when they helped launch Peter Tosh’s career as a solo artist in the late nineteen seventies, Richards found himself drawn to the deeply spiritual percussion based world of the nyabinghi chant.

In essence, Nyabinghi – a word that means either ‘black victory’ or ‘she who possesses all things’ in ancient Ugandan – is a trance inducing percussive musical form designed to bring the listener and the musician closer to God and the centre of the universe. The antithesis of modern production, the sounds Richards has recorded could not be more open and spare.  Rhythms are stripped down to their essentials with conga, shaker and akete repeating drum providing the musical backdrop to the singers’ invocations.  The slight interventions of Richard’s droning electric guitar are infrequent and never distracting; rather they illustrate his deep understanding and empathy for the music.

He resists any temptation to lay down a solo on top of a subtle harmony or overlap the rhythms with string based melodies.  Instead, through careful listening and the patience born of ganja sessions that begin at dawn and carry on around the clock, he has captured the essence of a music that is as old as humanity.  Who would have thought that this gangly old rock and roll pirate would have had it in him to have recorded the most rootsy set of songs captured on tape since the Lomaxes ventured into the deep south to record the music of migrant workers in the nineteen thirties?  I’d go as far as to say – and you can accuse me of any heresy you’d like here – that the simple fact that Richards has released these songs for everyone to hear equals any other contribution he has hitherto made to the world’s music.

Wade Davis, the explorer in residence for the National Geographic Society, recently remarked that one of the tragedies of the modern world is that currently one language or dialect disappears from the planet every single week.  As elders from traditional cultures die, so do their customs and linguistic knowledge. Seen in this light, ‘The Wingless Angels’ is a peerless work of cultural preservation that honours the ancient percussive traditions the late Justin Hinds, Jackie Ellis, and Locksley Whitlock embodied and communicated in their music. While it’s become a cliché to point out the connections between African and new world musical forms like the blues and jazz, it wouldn’t be much of a stretch to say that by listening carefully to the songs on ‘Wingless Angels’ one can hear the seeds of most of the music you’ve ever heard on the radio.

So, this music is ‘good for you’, but is it any good? As someone who has suffered through countless field recordings of dry traditional song forms recorded out of context by someone with a tin ear, I’m the first person to be wary of projects like this.  Rest assured.  Keith Richards’ approach to these songs embodies a perfect balance between joy and respect , and he never lets the cultural value of these recordings overshadow the sheer sublime qualities of the music itself.  The versions of ‘We Shall Overcome’, ‘Rivers of Babylon’, ‘Roll Jordan Roll’ and ‘Morning Train’ are beautiful, uplifting and all encompassing.

To let these songs into your heart is to allow time to slow down, way down and get in touch with a world of sound that is at once familiar and completely new.  This record probably won’t take the commercial world by storm, and I’m not expecting to hear about any emerging nyabinghi movements within mainstream western society, but those with open ears will marvel at the power of simple rhythms created by drums, shakers, and voices in approximate harmony to penetrate deep into the soul and release a world of trouble and care.  These are vanishing sounds, and we all owe Keith Richards a profound debt for capturing this music before it’s too late.  Every fan of roots music owes it to him or herself to at least give this one a listen.  This is as good as music gets.

Bob Marley And The Golden Age of Reggae [Titan Books, October 2010, $29.95/£24.99] is a testament in rare and largely unpublished pictures to some of the greatest years of Bob Marley’s career, and the history of reggae and dub music.

Through portraits, performance and personal shots, photographer Kim Gottlieb-Walker charts the rise of reggae with an unparalleled insight into the genre’s most iconic artists. Captured in Jamaica in the mid 1970s, never before collected and most never before published, this collection of powerful and pivotal pictures features Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Heptones, Inner Circle and Jacob Miller, Jimmy Cliff, Jr Murvin, Toots and The Maytals, George Harrison, Burning Spear and Third World.

Featuring a foreword from Hollywood filmmaker and former Rolling Stone journalist Cameron Crowe, this deluxe hardback collection also includes commentary from Island Records’ Jeff Walker, and founding editor of The Beat magazine, Roger Steffens.

“Kim’s pictures not only capture the humanity of these iconic figures but they also show a sense of intimacy that only photographs by a true artist can convey”
 – Steven Poster, ASC President of the International Cinematographers’ Guild

“For those who knew and loved the subjects of this book, may it bring them back (or forward, as the rastas would say) to life for you, if only for a moment. And for the generations that follow, may it introduce you to the music and the people who made it live.” – Kim Gottlieb-Walker

Kim Gottlieb-Walker’s varied career has encompassed music, politics, major motion pictures and television shows. Working for Island Records in the mid-seventies, she covered reggae performers all over Jamaica, and her High Times cover of Bob Marley remains their move popular cover ever. She shot stills for John Carpenter’s Halloween, The Fog, Christine and Escape From New York and worked at Paramount Pictures as the production photographer for Cheers and Family Ties. For over two decades, she has served as an elected representative on the National Executive Board of IATSE Local 600, the International Cinematographers’ Guild.

THE ULTIMATE WARNING FROM STEELE : : “If You Think You’re Lonely Now, Wait Until Tonight”.
Those are the words from Canadian reggae crooner Steele, who recently teamed up with Orville ‘Wiz’ Malcolm and Charles ‘Tower’ Sinclair of Korner Stone Productions, to unleash his latest recording.

Steele says the song which is executively produced by Canada ’s newest and fasting rising reggae label Fam Records, and his Mobs Production, is one of his most challenging project to date.

“The Bobby Womack’s original wasn’t easy. Recording this song felt like four minutes of just pelting out some serious aggression towards a topic, actually almost like cussing someone. In the end, I believe that I was able to get it’s essence across. Ironically, even though I’m the one singing it from a male perspective, it could have just as well been sung by a female. It’s a song that both genders can listen and appreciate. We’ll just have to wait for the response from the fans, but I do foresee a lot of heated discussions.

PRESS RELEASE
Lustre Kings Productions proudly presents the first single off of Jahdan Blakkamoore's up and coming release Babylon Nightmare (Dec. 7th, Lustre Kings/VP). Produced by longtime Jahdan collaborator Andrew 'Moon' Bain aka Digital Ancient (“Cash Flow,” Major Lazer, “Beauty of the Beast,” Noble Society), “All Comes Back to One” is an acoustic guitar-driven ballad which showcases Jahdan’s melodic intelligence at its brightest, his haunting voice and deft lyrics framed by the modern one drop rhythm like a gemstone in a subtle gold setting. The video, shot and directed Amir Ebrahimi of Metric9 productions, channels both the rough edges and the bright colors of Jahdan’s hometown of Brooklyn and makes a fine introduction to the Guyana-born, New York-bred artist’s sophomore album Babylon Nightmare. Modern but deep-rooted; vibrant but gritty, it has both feet firmly planted on the city streets even as it reaches for stars of universal shine.

Henry Turner Jr. has done it again!

Henry Turner’s new hit single It’s Christmas time in the city and the country
Is a refreshing change from the usual Holliday jingles.
Christmas time in the city and the country gives a new spin on Holliday
Tunes that both young and old will enjoy!  Its reggae rhythms and Henry Turners
Smooth vocals truly get you in the Holliday spirit.
It’s Christmas time in the city and in the country was written and produced by Henry turner Jr.
Off of the Hit City records label.  Other hits by Henry Turner Jr. include love me or leave me, Ugly Man,
Florida Keys, and a Buffalo soldier tribute to Mikey Dread.
It’s Christmas Time in the city and the country was produced at the hit City Records studio in Louisiana.
The song was inspired by Henry Turner Jr. noticing the lack of original Christmas reggae songs.
Henry  decided  that there was  no festive music  more festive than Reggae Music!
