On Saturday, November 20th, the Jamaican Government hosted the Service of Thanksgiving for the life of Gregory Anthony Isaacs (July 15, 1950 – October 25, 2010) at the National Indoor Sports Centre in Independence Park, Kingston, Jamaica, WI.

The moderator was Rev. Dr. Tommy Cowan. The performers listed on the program included Ken Boothe, The Tamlins, Freddie McGregor, Etana, Judy Mowatt and many others with backing band: Lloyd Parks and We The People Band (Gregory’s touring band). In attendance were many dignitaries and celebrities including Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, the Honorable Olivia 'Babsy' Grange, also the former Miss World, LeRoy Sibbles, The Chinns from VP records and many, many others.

Christian and Gospel music (rather than Rasta) were predominant; even the songs performed by reggae veterans Ken Boothe and Freddie McGregor were traditional. Freddie also performed the song, “Night Nurse” in a jazz style. It was probably the 10th time we had heard that song in the past two days but we never got tired of it. McGregor changed the words to reflect Gregory’s belief: “Rastafari is the only remedy…..”. Etana sang a song about Gregory …”being free like a bird in the sky, Free, gonna fly so high.”

The ceremony was very somber until the band started up again and out saunters Shaggy in a Gregory Isaac’s hat and Gregory Isaac’s swagger. People who had been crying one minute were laughing and hooting at Shaggy’s antics on stage as he sang the classic: I don’t want to be lonely tonight…”

The next performers were a teenage vocal group of about 30 singers - Nexus. What an experience for them singing at such an auspicious event backed by a famous band including 5-piece horn section. They went from one Gregory song to the next with their beautiful voices and harmonies. It was during, “I Like it Like That” that the casket was carried through the hall to the front of the stage. Dr. Dread (Gary Himmelfarb) was one of the pall bearers.

Tributes from friends, family, and other musicians were quite moving and eye opening for me. Especially his tribute from his Auntie, Mrs. Myrtle Shepherd. Reggae fans think of Gregory as belonging to the world of reggae but I was enlightened by Auntie’s words, how she remembers him the day he was brought home from the hospital, “a bundle of joy”, and about what a quiet, smart, little boy he was. He used to follow his Aunties down to hear music and people would clap at his dancing. She told about what an exceptional scholar he was and that he liked to make people laugh.

Dr. Omar Davis had this to say about Gregory Isaacs: “His musical uniqueness was in his lyrics – he was highly intelligent and he conveyed important messages including social commentary.” He was called, “The people’s philosopher” by another person paying tribute, and a “Consumate performer” by Clifton ‘Bigga’ Morrison who was there from England who went on to say, “Gregory delivered one-liners with the timing of a professional comedian, and was the quickest songwriter and never wrote a single song down! He finished by saying that “Gregory was now singing in the Big Band.”

The director of the Jamaican Association of Vintage Artists said that Gregory was third in the Royal Triumverate of Reggae: Bob Marley, Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs.

Gregory’s manager, Copeland Forbes paid a beautiful tribute to Gregory and shared with us the struggle he had this summer when he and others knew Gregory shouldn’t be touring because of his health, but Gregory kept putting the pressure on Copeland to keep business moving forward. The normally composed Copeland almost broke down recounting his memories of his beloved friend.

Auntie showed us all what a well-loved person Gregory was from a big family. His mother Enid sat in the front row and tried to remain composed as photographers and film crews kept her in their sights. Auntie concluded her tribute by ‘praising God for the gift that Gregory was to us.”

Gregory Isaacs was laid to rest at the Dovecot Memorial Cemetery in St. Catherine.

REVELATIONS

For over 40 years, Grammy® Award winning reggae Icon Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry’s name has become synonymous with experimentation and innovation both as a legendary producer and an influential performer. A towering figure, Lee “Scratch” Perry shaped the dub sound and made reggae music a powerful part of pop culture.

Recorded at Perry’s mountain-top studio in Switzerland and various studio locations in England, Florida and New York City and produced by long-time collaborator Steve Marshall AKA John Saxon for State of Emergency, Ltd., Lee “Scratch” Perry’s new album is entitled REVELATION.  Taking a hands-on approach, Perry not only fleshed out and developed the powerful lyrical content on the album, but also contributed his unmistakable hallmark of mastery of sound including synth programming.

Now in stores on the MEGAWAVE label, REVELATION presents the signature surrealistic and eccentric rhythmic genius of The Mighty Upsetter, featuring 13 of his best new songs in years with Marshall, Duncan & Green, Tim Hill, Keith Richards, George Clinton, Dr Sleepy, Alec Hay, elodieO, Abi Browning, and David Stewart Jones. Highlights include rock n’ roll legend Keith Richards on “Books of Moses” and a Lee “Scratch” Perry duet with George Clinton on “Scary Politicians”.

RUSSCUTTAZ RECORDS BRINGS REGGAE BACK
There has been much debate lately about the state of reggae music. The claim is that with the insertion of the dancehall culture, authentic reggae has suffered and as a result, diminished on the global scale. Many argue that with both genres coming from the island of Jamaica when one is dominant the other falters.

Concerned about these findings, reggae artist and CEO of Russcuttaz Records, Higher Purse, went to work. He spent the last couple of months working on a project now entitled: Old School Riddim. His position is that even though he is a fan of dancehall music, his heart has and will always be with reggae. And seeing reggae sales suffer is something he would like to do something about. Higher Purse believes that if we only give the people real reggae music like in the old days then they will actually pay for it.

As such, the Old School Riddim which features artist like Natty King, Natural Black, Karamanti, Rage, Shaka Pow, Higher Purse and many others will be released and available for download on all major online music stores as of November 25th. Zojak Worldwide is distributing the album and they can be found online at http://www.zojakworldwide.com

Confident that the Old School Riddim is exactly what reggae lovers are looking for, Higher Purse would like everyone to check out snippets of the album before purchasing it. Listen to the old school riddim here:

FEMALE DANCEHALL ARTIST GETS INVOLVED BEHIND THE SCENES
Thursday November 25th is a huge day for dancehall artist Karamanti, as that is the day the Trucka Riddim will be released. Under normal circumstances this would not be a big deal as Karamanti has appeared on many compilations in the past. What makes this compilation special however, is that not only is Karamanti a featured artist, but she also got involved and assisted with the recording of certain songs. She had to put on her engineering hat for a few weeks and recorded some of the artists at her studio in Jamaica. Karamanti recorded Shaka Pow, Rage, Pree Dem, Ryval, King Timo, Higher Purse and herself for the Trucka Riddim. She also provided some much needed help behind the scenes by ensuring that all the songs are properly copyright protected.

Initially, the producer (Crappy Crib) simply wanted her to voice on the rhythm. However, after he encountered some difficulty he approached Karamanti who he knew was able to provide the help he was looking for. Based on their relationship, Karamanti did not hesitate.

The Trucka Riddim features Boom Steppa, Burry Fabilous, Ceekaih, Higher Purse, Karamanti, Shaka Pow, King Timo, Lucky, Louie Rankin, Lukie, Pree Dem, Rage and Ryval. The compilation is being distributed by Zojak Worldwide (http://www.zojakworldwide.com) and will be available for purchase on all major online stores such as I-tunes, Amazon, rhapsody etc. as of Thursday, November 25th, 2010.

Everyone is encouraged to download a free promo mix of the Trucka Riddim compilation at

CHEF MAYRA - Spicy Apple Gingerbread Pancakes & Waffles
I kept these pancakes simple, with just cinnamon, ground ginger and some nutmeg in the batter. Freshly ground nutmeg is always the most flavorful, but preground will work if you have none fresh.

My favorite part – aside from the maple syrup that I poured all over these – is the chopped candied ginger work perfectly here that is mixed into the pancake batter.

They really add a nice spicy sweetness and are a pleasant surprise when your bite into a little piece! I sprinkled some extra on top of the pancakes to mix in with the maple syrup, as well.

Wha’ Ya Need
- 1 cup flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- pinch salt
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon ginger
- 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/8 teaspoon powdered cloves
- 1 cup soy milk
- 2 tablespoons oil
- 1 tablespoons unsulfured molasses

Wha’ Cha Do
- Mix the dry ingredients together in a medium bowl. Make a well and add the wet ingredients. Stir until to major lumps remain... some small ones are fine.
- Heat a small frying pan over medium heat (use oil if you're not using non-stick... these pancakes are a little stickier than usual).
- Add about a 1/4 cup of batter to the pan, swirl, and let cook until bubbles form (and stay) in the center, about 2 minutes.
- Flip and cook on the other side.
-
Repeat with the rest of the batter. Enjoy!

Chef TIPS: * These pancakes also tend to cook a little faster than regular pancakes... keep an eye on them so they don't burn! * They wind up with only a light molasses flavor; add more to taste if you desire.

EARTHDANCE 2011 DATES ANNOUNCED - NEW LOCATION!
Earthdance Northern California
Thank you for an amazing year...
2011 dates announced - Sept 23rd, 24th, 25th
Earthdance (www.earthdancelive.com)
info@earthdancelive.com

Dear Earthdancers,

Our deepest gratitude to everyone who helped make our "grand farewell" our best Earthdance ever. We are totally excited to take the energy of Earthdance to a new level in 2011 and we have included a letter to our community below to share our vision of what is in store.

Wishing you all the best for the Autumn season..!!

Dear Earthdancers,

As you all know we are moving Earthdance to a new location, as we have outgrown our beloved "Black Oak Ranch in Laytonville". Our new home will be at the Solano County Fairgrounds in Vallejo, within easy reach to the whole Bay Area and cities beyond.

We know many people are concerned by the change, as they feel we will lose the spirit of Earthdance by moving to a more urban area. It is true that we will lose the majestic ambiance of a woodland country setting, but we are totally excited by what this new venue has to offer. The new facility will allow us room to grow and will provide large indoor and outdoor venues, plenty of toilets, showers, easy parking and NO DUST. Most of all, the move will also allow us to take the Earthdance mission to a new level by taking our message of global peace and sustainability to a wider audience closer to the city.

The new site has three indoor buildings which will offer entertainment all day and late into the night. The first larger indoor venue has a 3000 capacity and will be transformed into a state of the art electronica temple with art installations, video walls, international DJ's and more. The second indoor venue, also 3000 capacity, has an acoustically treated ceiling and will offer live music, including late night themes such as "New Orleans Jam" sessions, world fusion nights and more. The smaller 500 capacity venue has a carpeted floor where we will host the sacred music stage, home to late night Kirtan and devotional chanting, sacred world music, workshops and more. This venue will also provide all day yoga classes featuring well known international and Bay Area yoga teachers. The main arena is an outdoor grass field with bleachers along the back that will hold about 5000 people and will host our main stage. Outside this venue is a shaded central courtyard where we will present our usual array of fine food vendors while people enjoy acoustic music on a central stage.

All throughout the fairgrounds there are shady lawn areas, wide avenues, and pleasant nooks and cranny's which we will fill with amazing art and devotional altars. Unlike many other fairgrounds where camping is difficult or limited, our new venue will also provide large areas of open campground, including tree lined areas, where people can enjoy the full weekend camping festival experience. We also offer over 100 RV sites, each with power and water, plus a large motel within walking distance.

Overall, we are excited to bring Earthdance closer to the Bay Area while maintaining our ambiance from The Black Oak Ranch. Yes, it is true that we will be leaving behind some incredible memories and a wonderful site, but we will be taking the creative spirit and intention that has created Earthdance Northern California to our new location. We hope you will join us as we take Earthdance to the next level. We promise not to let you down.!!

Please stay tuned at
www.earthdancelive.com for more details.

Check out more great photos from this year on our Facebook page

Wishing you all the best,

TARRUS RILEY TEAMS WITH US VIDEO DIRECTOR
Reggae singer Tarrus Riley recently teamed up with US-based video director Rik Cordero to work on the video for Superman, a track on his most recent album Contagious.

Superman has been generating a strong buzz across the Caribbean and this prompted Riley's decision to shoot a video.

In a release to the media, Riley outlined his reasons for deciding to work with the US-based director.

"Rik is friends with one of my friends, Mabricio Wilson (owner of the Futbulr clothing line), and he suggested that I try a different look for my next video," said Riley.

He added, "Superman has been doing well in the Caribbean for over a year now, so based on the feedback from the fans, I decided to get the video done. Persons who are not familiar with the song will get to know it."

Superman is a remake of an original recording by soul singer Robin Thicke. Riley's version was produced by Dean "Cannon" Fraser.

The video was released to Tempo, as well as television stations in Jamaica last week. Riley's newest single is the powerful Nyabinghi Pickney, in which he pays homage to his African ancestry as well as the national heroes of Jamaica. The track was produced by Roshaun 'Bay-C' Clarke of TOK for Bombrush.

TADS RECORDS RELEASES COMPILATION OF THE YEAR'S BIGGEST STREET ANTHEMS
New York, NY - November 24, 2010 - (RAINE PR): Tads Records is offering music fans the ultimate Dancehall experience - a compilation of the year's biggest street anthems and radio bangers from 'Dancehall hero' Vybz Kartel. Mixed by popular Jamaican radio disc jock DJ Wayne, Clarks: De Mixtape Raw is slated to hit iTunes and other digital outlets on Friday, December 10th.

Starting off the year with the release of Pon Di Gaza 2.0, Vybz Kartel's successful double album that was released in February, Tads is looking to cap off 2010 with an EP of singles from Kartel's catalogue of local and international hits and radio favorites from 2010, including "Clarks," an ode to the British shoe giant that has become a staple in Hip Hop and Dancehall fashion with styles such as Wallabees and Desert Boots. "Clarks" remained among the top three Reggae singles garnering the most radio airplay overseas for nearly 35 weeks.

Other singles on Clarks: De Mixtape Raw include the popular street zinger "Touch a Button," "Turn and Whine," "Cake Soap," "Better Can Wuk," and the recently released "Dancehall Hero." The EP also features "Clarks Again," and "Wear Weh You Have (Clarks 3)," his two follow up songs to "Clarks" - collectively known as the 'Clarks Trilogy.'

"This isn't a full-fledged album, but more of an attempt to bridge the gap between Pon Di Gaza 2.0, and his next album, which is scheduled for release at the end of 2011," explains Tadiem Dawkins, of Tads Record Inc. "As long as he keeps spitting out these hits, we must respond to the audience demand with a product that highlights and promotes these songs."

Dawkins adds that the response to the anticipated EP is "overwhelming, as the artist is on top of his game and is Jamaica's baddest deejay (mc)."

"Kartel has many attributes that have placed him in the enviable position atop the dancehall ladder," says DJ Wayne, of Jamaica's top-rated Reggae station Irie FM.  "His style is ever-evolving, and he uses all aspects of the art of deejay-ing to the fullest potential."

As opposed to a regular compilation album, Clarks: De Mixtape Raw features special mixes and exclusive new material from mix-master DJ Wayne, like the brand new single "Get Gyal Easy (Blackberry)."

"The mixtape has all the hot tracks from Dancehall's hottest deejay---crazy hits and new issh, blasted in true BLITZZZ style," exclaims DJ Wayne, adding Kartel's signature "Oh!" at the end of his statement. "I had to do this mixtape, as it was I who first presented Vybz Kartel to the public at large as a deejay. Kartel is as much my product as anyone else."

Clarks: De Mixtape Raw, will be released by Tads Record Inc. on iTunes and all digital outlets on December 10th. Production credits on the EP include Wayne 'DJ Wayne' Morris, Ainsley 'Notnice' Morris, Shaun 'ZJ Chrome' Chabal, Tarik 'Russian' Johnston, Linton 'TJ' White, Andrew Coke/LivUp Records, Cashflow Records, and Kirk 'Cool Face' Ford.

MATISYAHU RELEASES 'MIRACLE' HANNUKAH SONG
A week before Matisyahu kicks off his annual 'Festival of Light' series, which celebrates  Hannukah, the self-proclaimed "Hasidic reggae superstar" released a new track, currently available for download via iTunes. The song, called 'Miracle,' was produced by Kool Kojak, Katy Perry and is aimed at giving Jews an alternative to Christmas music during this time of year.

"There are so many Christmas songs out there," Matisyahu explained in a  statement. "I wanted to give the Jewish kids something to be proud of.  We've got Adam Sandler 's song, which is hilarious, but I wanted to try to get across some of the  depth and spirituality inherent in the holiday in a fun, celebratory  song ... Happy Hannukah!"

Matisyahu and his band, the Dub Trio, will officially launch this year's  'Festival of Light' with an intimate performance at New York's Brooklyn  Bowl on Monday, Nov. 29. He also stopped by Spinner's studio this week  to perform an acoustic set, so there's that, too. Stay tuned.

MAGNUM TONIC WINE DELIVERS ENERGY TO THE IMMORTAL STONE LOVE THROUGH A RENEWED PARTNERSHIP
Magnum Tonic Wine and Stone Love, two iconic brands in dancehall agreed to extend their long running strategic partnership for another year following a successful three year relationship. "We are really happy to continue with Magnum," explained Stone Love founder Winston "Wee Pow" Powell. "Our first major event under the new contract is the upcoming Stone Love 38th Anniversary Party in Portmore on December 18."

Magnum Brand Manager Kaysia Johnson pointed out that under the deal, "The two powerful brands become one superbrand, Magnum Stone Love." She went on to say that Magnum Stone Love will be making appearances at a number of events across the island; and the event will take different forms. "It could be a road show, a dance, a concert or street party. Magnum Stone Love will be in the dancehall and on the streets in a big way she added."

Big indeed. Stone Love selectors, some as popular as artistes, will be sporting Magnum Stone Love branded gear at select events, Magnum Stone Love dubs will be spinning on the CD players and Magnum bar specials will be available at Stone Love activations. Patrons will know it is party time when the Magnum Stone Love truck rolls in and the sound system unloads.

"When we hit the road with Magnum, everybody nice," commented Dwayne Powell, Wee Pow's son. Understandable considering that Magnum buckets are usually in close proximity to the sound when playing.

Buckets and bucket deals for patrons will be easily accessed at the Magnum Stone Love 38th Anniversary Party on Saturday, December 18. All of the Stone Love crew members including Wee Pow, Rory, Geefus, Billy Slaughter, Bill Cosby, Diamond, Fire Ras and Scary Gary will be on hand to juggle the classic dubs and the new favorites alongside a host of guest selectors, sound systems and artistes.

IS PROPALLY THE NEXT VYBZ KARTEL?:
There is a lot of buzz on the underground dancehall scene in Jamaica about newcomer, Propally. Specifically, everyone is comparing his lyrical abilities and work ethics to dancehall heavy weight, Vybz Kartel.

Ever since his days as a student at the Norman Manley High School in Kingston, Samora Gray, better known as Propally, eyed a career as an entertainer. He has worked earnestly from then to achieve that goal.

After a self-imposed break from the business, Propally re-emerged in 2007, connected with producer Arthur Wale from Free Willy Records, and released the track entitled “pretty browning”. The song, which was cut on the “madagascar beat”, gained consistent rotation at dances. But it was not until two years later when Propally hooked up with producer Omar Benjamin and Frenz For Real Records that he really started to get the attention he deserves. To date, the partnership has yielded several songs including the undeniable hit single “Rum Inna It” which was released jointly with Money Green Muziq. The same labels also put out “moma bawl” and a few others.

“To me, the music is a in-born thing. It jus’ come naturally,” said Propally, who has not only been logging a lot of studio hours he has also been busy hitting the stage at several events. He has performed at high-profile live shows such as West Kingston Jamboree, Champions in Action and Campfire, and at dances by established sound systems such as Stone Love and Swatch International.

Propally is constantly being compared to Vybz Kartel so we wanted to share his music so that you can be the judge. Here is a link to download five of his latest tracks absolutely free http://www.mediafire.com/?sb381cov41h25qg
