GREGORY ISAACS FOUNDATION TO BE LAUNCHED
|
|
|
BY BASIL WALTERS Observer staff reporter
A foundation to assist charitable organisations is to be set up in memory of late reggae crooner, Gregory Isaacs.
The disclosure was made on Friday as the offering collected at Isaacs’ funeral service on November 20, was handed over to the Walker’s Place of Safety by his widow June Isaacs.
The Cool Ruler was never one to brag about his good deeds.
“It is the intention of a number of family members to establish a foundation to carry on the charitable works of Gregory Isaacs and preserve his legacy,” Colin Leslie, a long time family friend and close associate of the legendary singer told the
Sunday Observer.
From all indications, the Walker’s Place of Safety will be a priority for the Isaacs family. The Cool Ruler got involved with this institution to assist the children who have been indentified as being at risk. He was never one to brag about his good deeds, so his virtue for caring for the well being and advancement of the less fortunate, is not widely known.
For more than a decade, the home for orphans, abandoned and mentally challenged children founded in 1972 by the late Ivy Walker, has been a beneficary of the late lovers rock crooner. And his widow has decided to keep alive his charitable contribution to the home.
“We remember Mr Isaacs because we talked about him all the while. We even let the children sing his songs in the mornings after devotion to cheer them up and things like that. So we will always remember him,” manager Grace Allen noted.
“I know he must be smiling right now to know that I am continuing this gesture, and I’ll keep it alive. My presence will be felt here as long as I am alive. He started it in the early 90s and I am going to continue this,” was the assurance given by Mrs Isaacs, while adding, “This is the total collection from the funeral service and I know he is glad to know that all of it has been donated to the Walker’s Place of Safety.”

JUDGE RULES BANTON CAN PERFORM WHILE AWAITING RETRIAL
|
|
|
TAMPA (AP) -- Jamaican reggae singer Buju Banton will perform a concert to raise money for his security and other expenses while he awaits retrial on federal drug charges in Florida.
As a condition of his release from jail last month, Banton must remain in his home under electronic monitoring and pay a private security team to ensure that he does not flee the country.
U.S. District Judge James Moody said Wednesday that Banton is allowed to perform so long as he follows security measures filed with the court. The concert is scheduled Jan. 16 in Miami.
Banton is accused of conspiring to buy cocaine from an undercover officer. He's been nominated for a Grammy for the album "Before the Dawn," released in September just after Moody declared a mistrial because jurors deadlocked.

EMERALD CUP IN HUMBOLDT COUNTY, NORTHERN CALIFORNIA
|
|
|
About the Cup:
Area 101 is usually peaceful, often lively and loud, and for the last six years, has hosted a musical celebration of the best bud on the planet: The Emerald Cup. Here's how Tim Blake tells the story:
In 2003, during the fall, a friend of mine and I got to talking about the fact that Mendocino had the best bud on the planet, but no form of acknowledgment or celebration about it. That was when it was still very iffy to be out front about having a public competition, so we combined the Emerald Cup with my friend and another local dude's birthdays. We put out no press, just some last minute posters, word of mouth, and twenty-three entries into the ganja contest came forward.
The crowd was small, with very few even willing to be in the house with their faces seen, much less come forward for their prizes. Still, it was a wild night, everyone had a ball, and other than the inevitable undercover agents, it was pleasantly uneventful.
The first Emerald Cup was won by a man heading towards eighty, who was a first time grower. His son had given him some plants, he put them into his garden with his other veggies, and he grew some incredible Purple Kush. After receiving the award, he sent the winning cup back to Area 101, saying that he wasn't going to be around long enough to enjoy it and that it should reside here forever. It does, and sits in this case today. The old man is still around, too.
The next year we took the event more out front, putting up more posters, talking to more people, pushing the envelope. Slowly we crept into the light. Forty-three entries were put up, and the bud was overall much better then the year before, because then growers had begun creeping their plants into full sun.
The judges were pushed to their limits. It came down to a Diesel cross against a Hindu Kush, and the Kush won. The show was headlined by the Avalon All-stars, with Vince Welnick sitting in. Bless his heart, it turned out to be his last gig before his unfortunate demise.
By the third annual Emerald Cup competition, we all had medical permits and everyone was growing in the full sun. Marijuna was blooming right into mainstream America. The fourth year we had fifty-one entries, and in 2009 there were ninety-nine, all organic, grown in the sun as God intended, all the Kind!
The judging gets harder every year. Buds are judged on color, smell, tricomes, crystals, taste, vibrancy, and finally how it changes the consciousness. The overall score for the high is doubled, so even if something isn't the prettiest, it can still compete. Entries must be in a month before the Cup so our judges can assess them all. We've added a "concentrated cannabis" competition as well, that is judged on the day of the Cup. Who knows, we may open it up to ganja foods and other cannabis medicines. Stay tuned!
So on Saturday afternoon we have the Cup award ceremony, some speakers, wonderful vendors, and then we light the bonfire, fire up the stages and dance all night. The last two years the Cup was headlined by Heavyweight Dub Champion, and this year we also had Wisdom and BLVD. The place was rockin'!
It is joy to be a part of this unique event, and we intend to keep doing this into the next millennium. We all have a part in this. Thank you for yours.
Peace, Tim Blake

MARLEY BROTHERS SIGN ALTON ELLIS' SON SINGER-SONGWRITER CHRISTOPHER ELLIS TO GHETTO YOUTHS
|
|
|
Five-time Grammy Award winning producer, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Stephen Marley along-side his brothers Damian Marley and Julian Marley are proud to announce the signing of reggae music singing sensation Christopher Ellis to the growing roster of musical talent featured on the Marley brothers record label imprint , Ghetto Youths International, Inc.
Christopher Lamour Ellis was born the youngest male progeny to “The Godfather of Jamaican Rocksteady”, the late Alton Ellis. Talented in his own right, the soulful 28 year-old roots reggae, r&b crooner has been astounding audiences with his incredibly natural, smooth vocal stylings since the age of 11.
In 2009, a mutual friend introduced Stephen Marley to Christopher Ellis in Jamaica. During that fateful meeting on Hope Road, Christopher sang A Capella for the iconic reggae producer. Coincidentally, the very same day that Stephen Marley met with Christopher Ellis, Marley was also contacted by producer Baby G, son of the legendary producer King Jammy, who had a remix track by Alton Ellis that he wanted Stephen to hear. Stephen listened to the Alton Ellis remix and immediately invited Christopher Ellis to join him at King Jammy’s studio in Jamaica to sing on the track.
The session resulted in Marley recording Christopher Ellis’ first single entitled, ‘End of Time’, produced by Baby G. ‘End of Time’ is a moving, soul-stirring track featuring beautiful vocal works by Christopher Ellis , Stephen Marley and Jah Cure, and is inspired by Alton Ellis’ rendition of ‘You Made Me So Happy’.
The magnificent opportunity of working with Stephen Marley and the Marley Family has continued in 2010 in Miami where Christopher Ellis has spent quality time working in the studio on material that is being helmed and produced by mega-producer.
“I feel so incredibly Blessed to be working on my debut album with Stephen Marley for the Ghetto Youths Records family.” comments Ellis.
To date, Stephen Marley has executive produced and recorded two singles for Ellis, including the aforementioned ‘End of Time’ and a rendition of Alton Ellis’ song entitled, ‘Willow Tree’, a sweetly seductive lover’s ballad that showcases Christopher Ellis’ versatile musicality. ‘End of Time’ has an anticipated release, while a ballad version and a reggae version of Ellis’ ‘Willow Tree’ is available now on iTunes. Later this year, a video launch accompanying Ellis’ ‘Willow Tree’ single will mark Christopher Ellis’ international debut, including in the territories of London, Jamaica and the United States.
Stephen Marley has been the driving creative force behind Ghetto Youths International, Inc. and the music created by his brothers for the family owned label. Stephen's production, performance and writing credits have earned him more Grammy Awards than any other Marley family member or reggae artist in history.Blazing his own trail in the music world, combining reggae, hip-hop, and r&b styles to create his sound as a performer, songwriter, and producer, the accomplished Stephen Marley is known to take on more of the behind-the-scenes roll.
Stephen Marley comments, "I don't want to be just another artist, I want to make a statement, and I want to continue this musical legacy with my family. Just like my brothers, I aspire to be a reckoning force, when you hear my name, when you hear the Ghetto Youths name, you know the quality that comes with that: good music, good message, and good vibe."
Ghetto Youths International was founded by Ziggy Marley and Stephen Marley in 1989. In 2002, Stephen Marley, Damian Marley and Julian Marley went on to incorporate the family owned record label. Recent projects released by the premiere, reggae and hip-hop oriented imprint include the Grammy award winning and nominated albums by Damian Marley Welcome To Jamrock, Stephen Marley’s Mind Control and Julian Marley’s Awake. A catalogue of reggae and hip-hop influenced artists signed to the Ghetto Youths record label include: Stephen Marley, Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, Julian Marley, Mr. Cheeks, Illestr8, Christopher Ellis, Jonathon Malcolm, Javaughn, Black Am I , Daniel Bambaata, and Jo Mersa.

Kenich ‘Black Mattic’ Lee : : Kenich ‘Black Mattic’ Lee
|
|
While growing up with his brothers in Waterhouse, Kingston and listening to the lyrics of Sam Cooke, a young Kenich Lee, better known as Black Mattic, fell in love with music and it never changed since.
Lee, a past student of Norman Manley High School, began his professional music career in 2000, at a time when many considered him young, but despite the struggles both personally and musically, he has fashioned a career, which can only get better as time passes by.
Considered as the ‘dancehall version’ of international R&B artiste Drake, the 24-year-old is poised to stamp is class in the music industry with some very eye-catching and witty lyrics. In 2003 Black Mattic formed his own record label ‘Official Hitz Entertainment’, which is a reflection of the deejay’s passion about music.
His first hit single Never Give Up, was produced by 3RE-R and released by his record label in April 2010. His moniker, Black Mattic, was given to him by close friends due to his easy yet impressive lyrical flow whenever he is voicing inside the studio. Tracks like Walk and Wine, Work Hard, Wi Struggle and Favorite Girl were all released between 2009/10 and have been getting rave reviews in the Caribbean and the U.S respectively. He has also released a compilation dancehall album entitled The Coliseum, with members from "Di Nation".
The slick-talking singer said he’s ready to explore the world with his music but would also welcome any other job opportunities such as movie and commercial endorsements, which will, in reality, enhance his image.
Black Mattic knows his musical style is of no comparison. In his latest studio effort, Mattic shows his versatility with his debut album Hot Grabba, which was release on his birthday on August 17, on all online media outlets.
The album, which boasts 12 tracks, has four major hit singles on it Far Away, Never Give Up, Feel Good and Numba one, and his own words Black Mattic says the " the most important on the album is the realistic feeling that the listeners gets." Black Mattic wants to continue make good music that articulates his life story and inspire upcoming artistes on the verge to success.

Cen C Love : :
|
|
Musician/Singer/Songwriter, Fashion Designer, Visual Artist, Cen’C Love is a 21st century renaissance woman. Born in America to Caribbean parents, Cen’C was raised between Kingston and Atlanta spending time equally between the two.
In Atlanta, she attended Dekalb School of the Arts. There along with talents such as crooner Lloyd, professional dancers LaKendrick, and Saheedah Fishenden among others, she studied dance, drama and writing. She was trained in classical voice by Jamaican born opera singer, Mrs. Dawn-Marie James nee Virtue.
Cen’C has the sultry voice and soulful sounds of a Billie Holiday, the musicianship of Lauren Hill and the word wit of Jill Scott. For Cen’C Love art is a lifestyle. Traveling throughout most of her summers with her fashion designer/dancer mom, she attended art and trade shows around the US where she received some of the inspiration that she now applies to her work. None of this should be surprising since Cen’C is the prodigy of the illustrious “Wailers” family of Reggae and the daughter of founding member of the acclaimed group, Neville Livingston, AKA Bunny Wailer.
The Wailers’ legacy is clearly apparent in Cen’C’s socially conscious songs. Songs such as SYSTEM, which describes the Babylon matrix control type system and THESE LIES about women with low self-esteem and their obsession with artificial identities. Her message of love is poignant and inspiring in songs like PARADISE and HEY YOU, stripping away the fear of baring our souls to love.
In addition to music, Cen’C embraces a natural holistic lifestyle through the practices of Yoga, Meditation, Qi-Gong and holistic nutrition. She is a very environmentally conscious woman who was raised in a green household, before green became the buzzword it is today. Always on a quest for WISDOM and OVASTANDING, Cen’C loves to love and shares this love through her music.
Cen’C has performed on stages in Jamaica, Atlanta, Los Angeles New York and Amsterdam. In Atlanta at the 2008 Natural Hair Show and at the Centennial Park Wednesday Wind-down in July 08, she honed her talent in front of very appreciative audiences. She appeared at the Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam 08 and at the Reggae Awards in New York in the spring of 2009. She has had numerous radio and television appearances and was featured in the Jamaican Gleaner and in High Times magazine. Her recent and most rewarding accomplishment to date, however, was becoming a mother for the first time at the end of 2009.
With a new baby, a new attitude and a brand new sound, Cen’c Love is ready to share her infectious brand of Reggae Soul with the world.

Your intuition is your quiet inner voice. It helps you make decisions, gives you direction and acts as your guide.
Intuition talks to you in different ways. Sometimes it’s a strong feeling or an inner “...knowing.” Sometimes it’s a sudden flash of inspiration or a moment of clarity. No matter how intuition speaks to you, know it always wants the best for you.
Next time you’re faced with an important decision, calm your mind, let go of self-serving emotions or thoughts and let your intuition speak. At first, it may be subtle. But, with awareness and practice, you can recognize it instantly.
Trust your intuition to be your guiding light. It will never disappoint you!
