DEBUT ALBUM FROM I-CIENT-CY MAU
|
|
|
Howard Campbell, Gleaner Writer
During a period of soul-searching 13 years ago, Desmond 'Junior Ranking' Williams discovered the heroic feats of the Mau Mau, a tribe that played a pivotal role in Kenyan independence from Britain.
Their impact on the east African country's freedom movement in the 1950s so moved him that he changed his rude boy moniker to the more cultural I-Cient-Cy Mau. They were also the inspiration behind his debut album, When Words Come to Life.
After three years of recording, the set was independently released recently by I Mau Mau Productions. I-Cient-Cy Mau said the trailblazing feats of his Kenyan heroes pushed him to be original.
"The album has new rhythms and that is very important because it gives your music an identity," he told The Gleaner. "If yuh check the (reggae) music from the '70s and '80s it's mostly original, dat's why people still listening to it."
Some of the musicians I-Cient-Cy Mau hung out with while he was part of the Papa Finnigan and Junior Ranking duo, worked on When Words Come to Life which was recorded at the Tuff Gong studio in Kingston. They include bass player Christopher Meredith and drummer Wilburn 'Squiddly' Cole who were once the rhythm section for Grammy-winning group, Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers.
Saxophonists Dean Fraser and Tony Greene are among the other established musicians who contributed to the 11-track album. Yet, I-Cient-Cy Mau is most excited about collaborating with the Mau Mau Warriors, a six-piece band which appears on all of the tracks.
"From 2006, dem and I an' I been working on a new soun'. From dem time Jah show I a sign an' wi start rehearse that soun' an' it manifest pon this album," he said.
Works to Do is the lead track from When Words Come to Life which comprises mostly message songs like We Are From Trench Town, the Kingston community where he was born. Empress, a lovers-rock number featuring a smooth solo from Greene, is another strong track.
Musical influences
Like many budding entertainers who came up during the 1970s, I-Cient-Cy Mau was influenced by roots-reggae performers including Bob Marley, Burning Spear, Big Youth and U Roy.
With Finnigan, he recorded four albums, the first being Two The Hard Way which was produced by Winston Riley for his Techniques label. That album yielded Youthman Prophecy, their most popular song.
But in 1997, I-Cient-Cy Mau decided to take a change in direction when he found out about the Mau Mau tribe.
"It was a different calling, a different vibe," he explained. "They had no weapons yet dem run out the wicked back to Britain, an' dat really inspire mi."
Jamaica has a strong link to the Mau Mau uprising. During the trial of their leader Jomo Kenyatta, one of his lawyers was Jamaican Dudley Thompson.
Kenyatta's nickname, the Burning Spear, was adopted by a St Ann-born singer Winston Rodney in the 1960s. He remains one of reggae's most influential artistes.
I-Cient-Cy Mau hopes to attract bigger distribution for When Words Come to Life in 2011.

MICHAEL ROSE - TOURING NORTH AMERICA - JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2011
|
|
|
Michael Rose is currently one of the top reigning reggae artists in the world. He has been headlining many of the top reggae festivals all over the world. Saturday October 16th he headlined the Dub Quake festival in Los Angeles, CA.
Next January he commences another North American tour. His last tour was from February through April 2010. He currently has another hit song out there getting strong radio rotation called Stronger, which is a combination with Baby Cham, Michael Rose and Bounty Killer.
Michael Rose is still in big demand in the US, after being kept out of North America for eight years from 2001 until 2009. Michael had been steadily building his solo career in America after leaving Black Uhuru until he ran into visa problems and was barred entry into the States. During his years banned from the U.S., he continued to record in Jamaica and tour in Europe, Canada, South America, Africa and Japan.
February 2009, Michael Rose finally got back his U.S. visa, and started out working in the U.S., doing a few chosen bigger shows. Michael was one of the highlights of the Bob Marley Day festivals in San Diego and Long Beach, CA. In June 2009, he headlined The Sierra Nevada World Music Festival, and in August, he headlined the Northwest World Reggae Festival and he played The Hollywood Bowl KCRW World Festival in Los Angeles, along with doing some other bigger shows.
In February, March and April 2010 Michael toured North America harder, hitting the smaller markets along with the bigger ones, performing all over the western US from Southern California to Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Colorado and New Mexico, and over to Illinois and the east coast.
Over the summer Michael headlined the Bayfront Reggae Festival in Duluth Minnesota and he headlined the Mid-West Reggae Festival in Garrettsville, Ohio. Early August he drew a remarkable 9,000 people at Music in the Park in San Jose, CA. He also spent time this summer doing festivals and touring in Europe.
Michael Rose is undoubtedly an exceptionally talented vocalist and performer. It was Michael Rose on lead vocals that propelled Black Uhuru to the top after Bob Marley, and won them a Grammy award. Michael Rose was always the favored voice of Black Uhuru, with his Waterhouse slurs and militant movements and vocal sound. Now Michael Rose has transcended Black Uhuru and his show is better than ever. His dancing and vocal style are loved, copied and appreciated worldwide
Michael has out three new albums – Warrior, Babylon a Fight and 911 Tip of the Iceburg. Also he has recently had hit songs dominating the airwaves - Shootout, Bad a Yard and Born Jamaican. Shoot Out was a mega hit with him and Junior Gong. Another new hit song he has out, featuring Mavado, is called Gully Gaza, and he recently finished a new music video called Paper Dog. As mentioned earlier, Michael currently has the song Stronger on the top of the charts. Michael Rose is staying current and in demand. Michael has a new CD near completion called Kingston 11, scheduled for release in early 2011.
With the exemplary Jamaican reggae artist Michael Rose on tour again, we are in for a special treat of inspired reggae music, backed by his world class Jamaican band.

Cush Hunta First Number 1 on an International Chart It was inevitable; Cush Hunta hitting a number 1 spot for the first time on an international chart as this artiste and his management has thought it through when they set out to create and release the songs they launched in a campaign recently. However, it is a pleasant surprise for the Corner Stone Productions family as the single entitle Ready Fi Buss is the first official production they released and the idea behind the song did not only apply to the artiste but the company as well. After riding the UK Top 10 Reggae singles chart for several weeks, Ready Fi Buss finally peaked at Number 1 a significant move at this time and just before his departure to Canada December 4th where he is schedule to perform in the Toronto Reggae Splash. Ready Fi Buss is #13 up from #15 last week after two weeks on Stampede Street Chart.
After Ready Fi Buss, Cush Hunta believe his “Name Fi Call” another single he has in rotation among local jocks and the message the Conerstone Productions camp is sending to the fans and well wishers who can listen to Cush’s interview with Jah Prince on Radio West Indies, Saturday December 18 at 10:00am

Cen C Love : :
|
|
Musician/Singer/Songwriter, Fashion Designer, Visual Artist, Cen’C Love is a 21st century renaissance woman. Born in America to Caribbean parents, Cen’C was raised between Kingston and Atlanta spending time equally between the two.
In Atlanta, she attended Dekalb School of the Arts. There along with talents such as crooner Lloyd, professional dancers LaKendrick, and Saheedah Fishenden among others, she studied dance, drama and writing. She was trained in classical voice by Jamaican born opera singer, Mrs. Dawn-Marie James nee Virtue.
Cen’C has the sultry voice and soulful sounds of a Billie Holiday, the musicianship of Lauren Hill and the word wit of Jill Scott. For Cen’C Love art is a lifestyle. Traveling throughout most of her summers with her fashion designer/dancer mom, she attended art and trade shows around the US where she received some of the inspiration that she now applies to her work. None of this should be surprising since Cen’C is the prodigy of the illustrious “Wailers” family of Reggae and the daughter of founding member of the acclaimed group, Neville Livingston, AKA Bunny Wailer.
The Wailers’ legacy is clearly apparent in Cen’C’s socially conscious songs. Songs such as SYSTEM, which describes the Babylon matrix control type system and THESE LIES about women with low self-esteem and their obsession with artificial identities. Her message of love is poignant and inspiring in songs like PARADISE and HEY YOU, stripping away the fear of baring our souls to love.
In addition to music, Cen’C embraces a natural holistic lifestyle through the practices of Yoga, Meditation, Qi-Gong and holistic nutrition. She is a very environmentally conscious woman who was raised in a green household, before green became the buzzword it is today. Always on a quest for WISDOM and OVASTANDING, Cen’C loves to love and shares this love through her music.
Cen’C has performed on stages in Jamaica, Atlanta, Los Angeles New York and Amsterdam. In Atlanta at the 2008 Natural Hair Show and at the Centennial Park Wednesday Wind-down in July 08, she honed her talent in front of very appreciative audiences. She appeared at the Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam 08 and at the Reggae Awards in New York in the spring of 2009. She has had numerous radio and television appearances and was featured in the Jamaican Gleaner and in High Times magazine. Her recent and most rewarding accomplishment to date, however, was becoming a mother for the first time at the end of 2009.
With a new baby, a new attitude and a brand new sound, Cen’c Love is ready to share her infectious brand of Reggae Soul with the world.

ANDREW TOSH AND KYMANI MARLEY - FIRST IN DECADES - MARLEY AND TOSH TOGETHER IN SONG:

|
 |
There are things in life that are certain. You know the usual death, taxes and time waits for no man kinda talk. But another thing that cannot be denied is the legacy that a man leaves for his child. This thought is the basis of the new tribute album LEGACY from Andrew Tosh, son of legendary reggae pioneer Peter Tosh.
For the uninitiated among you, Peter Tosh was a founding member, along with Bob Marley, Cherry Smith, Junior Brathwaite, Beverly Kelso and Bunny Wailer, of the original Wailers band. The Wailers, from its formation in 1963 to its eventual disbandment in 1974, was responsible for the most poignant music coming from the island of Jamaica even to this day.
With noted classics such as ‘Simmer Down’, ‘Get Up, Stand Up’ and ‘Trenchtown Rock’, The Wailers remains one of the most renowned reggae acts globally.
After becoming a solo act, Peter Tosh and his music became symbols of rebellion and albums: LEGALIZE IT, EQUAL RIGHTS and WANTED DREAD AND ALIVE serve to reflect Peter’s seemingly militant stance. However in one of his more reflective moods, Peter produced one his most loved songs by his fans worldwide.
Appearing on his last studio album release NO NUCLEAR WAR, ‘Lessons In My Life’ speaks philosophically about things he has realized about life and the people in it. This song is especially prophetic as it was released only weeks before Peter’s untimely death at the hands of a former friend. Fast forward to 2010, and Peter’s son Andrew’s celebration of his father works in the form of LEGACY.
Andrew has not only chosen ‘Lessons In My Life’ as the lead single from the album but also has recruited the voice of Kymani Marley to help him deliver the message of the song to the people. This is significant as it features for the very first time, the offspring of Peter Tosh and Bob Marley collaborating on a track together. And what a track it is. Andrew, fusing some of the elements of the original track with his updated interpretation, really got the tone of the song right with his vocal delivery.
Kymani aptly controls the second verse only after expertly intertwining his voice with Andrew’s in the first verse. The track itself features the use of the congo drum, guitar and at certain instances, the violin. If fans of the original Peter Tosh offering listen closely they will hear a sample taken from the original song.
This song is a very worthy tribute from Andrew to his late father and if the rest of the album was produced with such care and dedication then the world will surely once again say ‘Igziabeher (Let Jah Be Praised)’.
As you can see Andrew Tosh is carrying on his father’s musical legacy with even the potential to take it to new heights in the new millenium. Hopefully he remembers that as a part of a legacy...He is sharing dreams and trying to changing humanity for the better. These are types of legacies that should never die.
Andrew Tosh and Kymani Marley will be on tour in South America October - November 2010 and West African December 2010.
Andrew just performed a government free concert in Brasilia, Brazil September 25th in front of 12,000 people.
This is the single from the album titled "LEGACY" by Andrew Tosh. It features Kymani Marley. LEGACY is a tribute album by Andrew to the works of his father, Peter Tosh. The first single, "Lessons In My Life" is significant, since it features for the first time, a Tosh and a Marley of the next generation coming together.

TRUST YOUR INTUITION
Your intuition is your quiet inner voice. It helps you make decisions, gives you direction and acts as your guide.
Intuition talks to you in different ways. Sometimes it’s a strong feeling or an inner “...knowing.” Sometimes it’s a sudden flash of inspiration or a moment of clarity. No matter how intuition speaks to you, know it always wants the best for you.
Next time you’re faced with an important decision, calm your mind, let go of self-serving emotions or thoughts and let your intuition speak. At first, it may be subtle. But, with awareness and practice, you can recognize it instantly.
Trust your intuition to be your guiding light. It will never disappoint you!
