GREGORY A SHOO-IN FOR GRAMMY
Gregory Isaacs

Co-chairman of the Reggae Grammy Committee, Roger Steffens,  believes Gregory Isaacs will win the Best Reggae Album category at the  Grammy Awards.

Steffens said Isaacs, who died from lung cancer in October at age 60, is the sentimental favourite.

"Gregory will be a shoo-in. His long career certainly deserves the honour. It's got great human interest appeal," Steffens told The Gleaner last week from Los Angeles.

Isaacs Meets Isaac is the name of the 12-track album that earned the 'Cool Ruler' his fourth Grammy nomination. It is a  collaboration with King Isaac, a Zimbabwean singer and longtime admirer of his music who teaches at a Michigan college.

Before The Dawn by Buju Banton, Revelation by Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Andrew Tosh's Legacy - An Acoustic Tribute to Peter Tosh, Made In Jamaica by Bob Sinclar, and Sly and Robbie's One Pop Reggae are the other nominees.

2009 nomination

According to Steffens, who wrote the liner notes for Isaacs Meets Isaac, most of the funds that produced the set came from King Isaac, who  travelled to Jamaica over five years to record with his idol.

Isaacs was last nominated for a Grammy Award in 2009 for the album, Brand New Me. The award, which was handed out this year, went to Stephen Marley for Mind Control Acoustic.

Isaacs' Grammy nods have been for largely sub-standard albums and  were recorded some time after his heyday in the 1980s. The same can be  said of other reggae acts including Dennis Brown and Freddie McGregor.

Interestingly, British singer Mick Hucknall's cover of Isaacs' monster hit Night Nurse was on Sly and Robbie's Friends album that won Best Reggae Album in 1999.

Steffens - who does not vote given his position as co-chair - has  often criticised the selection process for the Best Reggae Album  category, which is conducted by the National Academy of Recording Arts  and Sciences (NARAS).

He said since it was granted Grammy status in 1984, most winners  of the category are related or associated with reggae legend Bob Marley.  Most times, reggae fans are not familiar with the nominees.

Some Reggae Grammy winners, such as Peter Tosh, were also considered sentimental victors. His No Nuclear War won in 1988, one year after he was murdered by gunmen at his St Andrew home.

Despite the criticisms, there have been popular winners including Inner Circle for Bad Boys in 1994; Shaggy's Boombastic in 1996; Sean Paul for Dutty Rock (2004); and Damian 'Junior Gong' Marley for Half-Way Tree (2002) and Welcome to Jamrock (2006).

Sly and Robbie and the eccentric Perry are the only past winners  in the 2011 field. Perry, best known for his work as a producer in the  1970s, won in 2003 for the little-known Jamaican ET.

After years of lobbying by reggae interests, the NARAS finally recognised the music with a Grammy category 26 years ago. Black Uhuru's Anthem, produced by Sly and Robbie, won the first statuette, which was presented in 1985.

“REVELATION” RECEIVES GRAMMY® NOMINATION NEW ALBUM FROM LEGENDARY PRODUCER LEE “SCRATCH” PERRY
This month, Lee “Scratch” Perry’s new album REVELATION received a Grammy® nomination in the Best Reggae Album category. Now in stores on the MEGAWAVE label, REVELATION presents the signature surrealistic and eccentric rhythmic genius of The Mighty Upsetter, featuring 13 of his best new songs in years with long-time collaborator Steve Marshall, Duncan & Green, Tim Hill, Keith Richards, George Clinton, Dr Sleepy, Alec Hay, elodieO, Abi Browning, and David Stewart Jones. Highlights include rock n’ roll legend Keith Richards on “Books of Moses” and a Lee “Scratch” Perry duet with George Clinton on “Scary Politicians”.

REVELATION was produced by Marshall AKA John Saxon for State of Emergency, Ltd.  Taking a hands-on approach, Perry not only fleshed out and developed the powerful lyrical content on the album, but also contributed his unmistakable sound including synth programming.

REVELATION follows the controversial SCRATCH CAME, SCRATCH SAW, SCRATCH CONQUERED, featuring Keith Richards, George Clinton, Reuben White, Tim Hill, Erica Iji, Mark Mason and Sheridan Tandy, and the Grammy® nominated THE END OF AN AMERICAN DREAM, all on the MEGAWAVE label.

The 53rd Annual Grammy® Awards will be announced on February 13, 2011.

RIDDIMENTARY DIPLO SELECTS GREENSLEEVES - ECLECTIC PRODUCER MIXES REGGAE CLASSICS ON NEW ALBUM
(GREENSLEEVES RECORDS, NEW YORK)  - Experimentalist music producer and remix mastermind Diplo teams up with Greensleeves Records to reload and re-release some of Reggae's greatest classics on Riddimentary - Diplo Selects Greensleeves.

Known for his electronic dub musical styling and as one-half of world renowned production team Major Lazer, Thomas Wesley Pentz aka Diplo lends his eclectic ear and considerable talents as a Reggae selector to Riddimentary. The continuous blended mix covers over 20 years of revoluntionary Jamaican and UK hits from the top producers in Dub, Reggae and Dancehall from the 1980s and 1990s.
The retro flavor and historical context of these selections shine a light on Diplo's production influences and expert knowledge of the Reggae genre. Choosing anthems such as "Night Nurse" by Gregory Isaacs, "Police In Helicopter" by John Holt, "Telephone Love" by J.C. Lodge and "Anarexol" by Eek-A-Mouse, Riddimentary sees Diplo not only selecting through the Greensleeves catalog but also placing his imprint on its legacy.

For new converts to Reggae or collectors of crucial tracks from Reggae's classic era, Riddimentary is rudimentary. Please direct all press inquiries to the VP Records Publicity Department - Rhona Fox at 1-718-425-1151 or press@vprecords.com.

STONE LOVE ANNIVERSARY SECURED - JAMAICA
Stone Love Movements, the long standing sound system celebrates 38 spectacular years on Saturday December 18 at the Royal View Hotel, Port Henderson Road. Fans will be treated to masterful selections by the Stone Love crew on a night that promises to be filled with excitement and great vibes.

Stone Love Movements was founded by veteran selector Winston Powell better known as Wee Pow. In the almost 4 decades of its existence it has honoured the talents of several acclaimed selectors including Cancer, Rory, Chico, Slaughter, Geefus, Nico Bam Bam, Bill Cosby, Diamond, Dwayne Pow (Powell's son), Iceberg, Scary Gary, Black Fox, Fire Ras and Randy Rich. The sound has built a reputation for being one of the best in the business, making its mark on Jamaica's dancehall and reggae culture. It is easily one of the most recognizable sound systems in Jamaica and has outlived other sounds system during past years.

The Anniversary celebrations have been held at several different locations over the years, including La Roose, Jollies, Market Place and Mas Camp. The organizers' decision to return to Portmore, St. Catherine was partly the result of the nostalgic feel of early celebrations in Portmore.

An impressive transformation of the venue is expected, aided by intelligent lighting, a specially constructed dance floor complete with a platform that will be used by the captivating magnum girls. The thrills won't end there as special guest artistes and sound systems will make appearances to honour Stone Love Sound System.

This year's event is sponsored by Magnum Tonic Wine.  Kaysia Johnson, Magnum’s Brand Manager expressed enthusiasm with the partnership and views this as an effective way to promote the brand's presence. “We have embraced the dancehall culture and see this as the ideal opportunity to celebrate this milestone with stone love and fans. We will also push our new campaign “Stay on Top”, which will bring more energy to the party. We have a lot in store for party goers including give-aways, all night specials, the popular Magnum girls and much more.”

Associate sponsors include Natures Pure Spring Water, The Star, Irie FM and Zip FM, Paj Auto and Chiney K Productions.

Security for the event will be provided by both local law enforcement officials and additional security from a reputable firm.  Ample secured parking will be available close to the venue at a well lit area to ensure the safety of all patrons attending this grand celebration. Absolutely no weapons will be allowed inside the venue and strict security measures will be enforced throughout the night.

The tickets are $800 (JA) pre-sold and $1000 at the gate. The organizers encourage everyone to come out early to enjoy the cash give-aways, the Magnum bucket deals and the surprises in store for all.

BUJU BANTON'S BEFORE THE DAWN NOMINATED FOR GRAMMY ARTIST SET TO PERFORM LIVE AT CONCERT IN MIAMI, FLORIDA ON JANUARY 16TH
Gargamel Music, Inc. is proud to announce that Jamaican music icon Buju Banton has received his fifth Grammy nomination in the Best Reggae Album category for his prophetic new project, Before The Dawn. Recorded mostly at his own Gargamel Music studio in Kingston, the album boasts some of the most powerful songs written by Banton since his professional entry into the music business over twenty years ago.

Released in September to critical acclaim, Before The Dawn debuted at #2 on Billboard's Reggae Albums chart and #26 on the mag's Heatseekers chart. Currently the album is perched at #1 on both the South Florida and the New York Top 20 Reggae Albums charts, #1 on Richie B's Jamaica Music Countdown and #4 on CMJ's World Music chart. Highlights include Do Good, In The Air, Struggle Together and the especially potent Battered & Bruised. The album's unofficial anthem, Innocent strikes a highly personal chord that resonates deeply considering the artist's ensuing legal battle.

Banton was previously acknowledged by the Recording Academy for his albums Rasta Got Soul(2009), Too Bad (2007), Friends for Life (2004) and Inna Heights(1999). News of the 2010 Grammy nod comes on the heels of a federal court ruling by Judge James Moody that allows Banton, who is out on bail, to perform at an event in South Florida during Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend. The veteran Reggae artist, who had been incarcerated at Pinellas County Jail for 11 months, has not performed live in over a year.

Produced by Rocker's Island, the Before The Dawn Concert featuring Buju Banton & Friends will take place on Sunday, January 16 at Bayfront Park Amphitheater in downtown Miami from 4:00pm - 10:00pm.

T.O.K & LIVE WYYA BAND HEAD FOR ZIMBABWE
Top-ranking dancehall group T.O.K, along with the LIVE WYYA BAND leave Jamaica on December 18 for Harare, Zimbabwe for a special concert performance there at the International Conference Centre.

The four-man aggregation whom the New York Times describes as “the best Dancehall group out of Jamaica” will give the fans in Zimbabwe a taste of Jamaican dancehall music with a blazing performance not seen in that country since the visit of the late Reggae King, Bob Marley.

The Live Wyya Band will accompany the quartet to the Mother Land where both groups will be making their first appearance on that continent. The six-man Live Wyya Band won the first staging of the Battle of the Bands contest in Jamaica some five years ago, and have now moved into the arena of a self-contained group; they will do a 45-minute-set by themselves prior to providing musical backing for T.O.K.

The Zimbabwe concert will be the launching pad for  the Live Wyya Band who’ll use the opportunity to promote their latest CD entitled “SPREAD THE LOVE”.

Richard Browne, son of Tarrus Riley’s bass player Glen Browne, will accompany T.O.K in the capacity of Musical Director. The tour will make stops in Addis Abba, Ethiopia and will end in Costa Rica on December 24th before returning to Jamaica on Christmas Day.

The tour was organized by veteran manager and tour organizer, Copeland Forbes, who’ll accompany the 13-man reggae outfit on the historic tour of the Motherland and Costa Rica.

IVORY COAST REGGAE STAR CALLS FOR GBAGBO TO STEP DOWN
BAMAKO — Ivory Coast reggae star Tiken Jah Fakoly on Sunday joined calls for Laurent Gbagbo to accept defeat in presidential elections last month and step down.
"There must be democracy," said the outspoken musician during a news conference in the Malian capital where he has lived since civil war broke out in Ivory Coast in 2002.

"He (Gbagbo) must find an exit door. We live in planetary village and when the whole world talks about you, you must listen," he said.
"There have been too many deaths in Ivory Coast, we don't want any more bloodshed," he said.
"Gbagbo's only supporter today is the (public) television which he controls. The day when he no longer controls the TV, it is finished."
The reggae star has a long history of social and political activism, and he hit the headlines in 2007 when he was declared "persona non grata" by Senegal after criticising President Abdoulaye Wade.
Gbagbo has become locked in a dangerous face-off with long-time enemy Alassane Ouattara after both claimed victory in last month's presidential election, declared themselves president and named rival governments.
Ouattara has been recognised by the United Nations and the international community.

SHAGGY AND ALAINE'S FOR YOUR EYES ONLY TOPS NY CHART
For Your Eyes Only, the collaborative single recorded by diamond-selling reggae act Shaggy and singer Alaine, has hit the number  one spot on the New York Reggae chart. The song was produced by Tony 'CD' Kelly and released the K-Licious label.

In a release to the media, Alaine was all excited  about  the  track. "I am grateful for the response to the song so far and am looking forward to more. It's an honour to work with Tony Kelly and   Shaggy they are both incredibly talented. I am happy for every blessing and ready for more."

Alaine had been doing some work with Kelly, a well known producer in dancehall circles, when the opportunity to record For Your  Eyes Only  presented itself. "Tony called me one day and said he had a rhythm and  that he wanted me to voice a hook on it.  He gave me the  idea of using For Your Eyes Only for the hook, and I wrote the chorus based on that. Tony then contacted Shaggy and the song was completed,"  Alaine  explained.

This song marks the second number one collaborative effort for Alaine,  who previously topped the charts with the Beenie Man collaboration Dreaming Of You.

This is Shaggy's fourth number one collaborative hit, following on the heels of Your Eyes and It Wasn't Me (both of which featured Rik Rok) and Hey Sexy Lady (with Sean Paul and Brian & Tony Gold).

Another single from Alaine, You Are Me which is featured on VP Records' Strictly the Best Volume 42 compilation, is currently charting on the Jamaica Music Countdown.  The song was produced by Alaine for her 1Thirty1 Records imprint.

ANTHONY B - TOURING NORTH AMERICA, HAWAII AND CANADA ON HIS OWN – JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2011
Anthony B is the conscious bobo dread whose razor sharp lyrics and inspired performances have propelled him to the forefront of the reggae genre. Anthony B just recently finished touring Europe and Africa, and he also just did a spot date in Costa Rica and another one at the Grenada National Stadium, in Grenada. He has a new hot single out called You are my Yes and my No.

This January / February 2011 tour that is coming together is slated to be a year later since his last winter tour, last January, February 2010 which was a successful run that consistently drew strong crowds. The winter before that, he toured the western U.S. in March 2009. That tour was also a great success, consistently selling out venues and working seven days a week.

Anthony B has been steadily building his fan base touring North America, South America, Africa, Japan, Canada, and Europe. October 2008 Anthony B also did a successful six-week European tour. Just prior to that, in September 08, he did a three-week western U.S. tour, on which he performed The Earthdance Festival in Mendocino CA, and the Eugene Celebration in Oregon. Prior to that, in March 08, he did a Colorado tour on which he hit some of the main Rocky Mountain outposts. February 2008 he performed on the Ragamuffin Bob Marley Day shows in Long Beach, Santa Cruz, San Francisco, and Humboldt County, where he was a highlight on all of these bigger stadium shows. These shows were part of another successful west coast tour.

Anthony is currently one of the hottest live reggae performers in the world. His band, the Untouchable band is lively, dynamic and on point. They carry female vocalists and their own engineer. Anthony B’s on-stage energy makes him a top-rated performer in Jamaica and abroad. He toured South America in 2008, and in August 09 he performed on a massive festival in Cape Verde Africa. Anthony B is currently a dynamic musical force in the music industry. He has hit the world working with remarkable force and energy, raising the standard of the reggae genre.

BIOGRAPHY: ANTHONY B

Draped in the rich colors of African cloth, his trademark staff in hand, and his dreadlocks wrapped regally on his head, Anthony B embodies all that it is spiritual and proactive about Reggae music. This artist has been steadfast in his mission to represent the poor and oppressed, using sharp lyrics to confront political injustices and bring the issues of the people to the forefront. In the process, he has raised the quality of performance standards and lyrical content for the industry, through the release of 10 albums, over 1000 singles and appearances on over 100 albums in the last 13 years.

Anthony B’s musical journey started in the church, back when he was still called Keith Anthony Blair in Clark’s Town, Trelawney. Here he was immersed in the thunderous chants and rhythms of Revivalism and the Seventh Day Adventist church where he honed his signature vocals. In his formative years, the artist also cleaved to the music of Otis Redding and the incomparable Peter Tosh.

In 1992, Anthony B left his hometown and set out to make his mark on Kingston’s music scene. He rebuked the trend of girl and gun lyrics popular at that time and remained faithful to words of spiritual consciousness and social conviction. He started working with singer Little Devon, who introduced him to Richard “Bell” Bello, of Star Trail Records, producer for Garnet Silk and Everton Blender. Bell saw the talent of the youngster and shared his commitment to conscious music. The partnership produced a slew of hits such as "Repentance Time", "Fire Pon Rome", “One Thing”, and "Raid di Barn”. Anthony B followed up with critically acclaimed albums such as So Many Things, Universal Struggle, Seven Seals, That’s Life, Street Knowledge , Black Star, My Hope, Justice Fight, Untouchable, Suffering Man and Higher Meditation. He also struck out on his own to produce 3 albums independently, started his own label, Born Fire Records, and released two collaboration albums Too Strong with Sizzla and Three Wise Men with Sizzla and Luciano.

Anthony B’s lyrical genius and captivating, energetic performance style have led to be heavy requests for performances in the Caribbean, North America, Europe and Africa. In 2003 and 2004, he was given a king’s welcome in Gambia and Senegal. In 2004, he sold out shows in Switzerland, Austria, Sweden, Belgium, France, Italy and Germany, closing for such greats as Israel Vibration and Burning Spear. He also opened up new regions for reggae music through his performances in New Delhi, India and on France’s Reunion Island, in the Indian Ocean. The live DVD and CD, Live on the Battlefield, captures the essence of his early performances. He also successfully tours South America - Santiago, Chile, Buenos Aires, Argentina, Venezuela and Peru.

His heavy touring schedule has not slowed Anthony B’s stream of releases. Over the years, he has collaborated with Bone Crusher, Akon, Wyclef Jean, Snoop Dogg and R. Kelly.

Anthony B’s rich vocals and audacious lyrics carry a depth and substance, which is rare in the industry. Internationally, his fan-base has grown because he speaks about the universal concerns of suffering and salvation. “The greatest thing about reggae music is that it’s about concepts and ideas,” says the artist, “you are speaking to people on issues they live and can relate to.”

Anthony B’s latest hit singles include Tease Her, Territory, Satisfaction and Bad From Long Time. Anthony B continues to speak, as he proves himself to be one of Reggae’s most prolific and engaging artists. He is an electrifying performer whose music grips the public social conscience.

Tribute to Zola Burse - May He Rest in Peace
For Today, The Music is Silent.......

Reggae lost one of its most Beautiful people and my friend, Zola Burse.

I met Zola in 1997 when he was the Tour Manager for The Spirit of Unity Tour and I was working for Buju Banton. He gave my Mom a pair of sandals on that tour (that she still has today) and she always asks me how her friend Zola is doing. My last 3 years back at VP Records, gave me the privilege again to work with Zola as he has been with Beres Hammond as his Tour Manager for many years. I have so many great memories on the road with Zola, Beres, Mervis and the crew. They are the true sense of a Reggae family.

As many know (Maxi Priest, Roberta Flack, and the list goes on), Zola's hard work, commitment and knowledge of the music made him one of the best in the business. There will NEVER be another like him. He will truly be missed!

Until we meet again, My Dear Zola, May You Rest in Peace!
Cristy Barber

FROM THE FAMILY & STAFF AT VP RECORDS WE SEND OUR DEEPEST CONDOLSENCES TO ZOLA'S FAMILY & FRIENDS!
Our friend Zola will be deeply missed by all!
