BOB MARLEY: LAST RECORDED PERFORMANCE TO BE RELEASED
Bob Marley, who is easily one of reggae’s most successful and influential musicians, has left behind a legacy that still inspires artists today. With countless critically acclaimed albums and several prestigious awards, he continues to have an impact on our lives. Now we’ll be able to listen to the Jamaican's last recorded performance on an upcoming live album due out early next year.
This will be the sixth official live album by Bob Marley and The Wailers, and is entitled Live Forever. The album has two CD’s worth of material, and features some of Bob Marley’s greatest hits like “Jamming”, “Redemption Song”, and “No Woman, No Cry”.
The material was recorded 30 years ago at a show on September 23rd, 1980 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania just after writing the hit album Uprising, which would turn out to be the last studio album Bob Marley released during his life. The record is planned to be available for purchase on the first of February.
“Bob’s music has always conveyed a message of hope, unity and love,” says Rita Marley. “It has brought countless people together as it did that night 30 years ago in Pittsburgh. To hear that music today and to be able to share it with a new generation shows that Bob is as relevant today as he was 30 years ago.”
The track listing for the album will be as follows:
CD One:
01. Greetings
02. Natural Mystic 03. Positive Vibration 04. Burnin’ and Lootin’ 05. Them Belly Full 06. The Heathen 07. Running Away 08. Crazy Baldhead 09. War/No More Trouble 10. Zimbabwe 11. Zion Train 12. No Woman, No Cry

Frustrated with what they say is a distinct media bias toward dancehall music in Jamaica, a group of disgruntled musicians have formed an organisation to push for a level playing field.
Protest Now And Save Reggae (PNASR) is the name of the group which currently has 15 members, including president, Canute Parkes, a singer who also goes by the moniker Livebroadcast.
Drummer/songwriter Oniel 'Blunt' Walters is vice-president of the organisation, which also includes guitarists Andrew Simpson, Mitchum 'Khan' Chin and Lebert 'Gibby' Morrison, bassist Donald 'Axeman' Dennis and keyboardist Carol 'Bowie' McLaughlin.
Parkes said getting 'serious' Jamaican music back on local airwaves is one of the PNASR's primary objectives. That and rescuing reggae music.
"We want to see reggae risen from its fallen state and to do that we've started a movement that is going to get it back to an acceptable level," Parkes told The Gleaner.
The PNASR plan to release a song, Reggae Rescue From Freefall, to help push their point. It will be distributed to all local media and, based on response (airplay, etc), results will be sent to the Broadcasting Commission, the independent body that monitors airwave standards.
"Depending on the level of airplay the song gets, we will be in a position to test the integrity of the system," Parkes said.
McLaughlin, who has recorded with Beres Hammond, Dennis Brown and Ziggy Marley, says the PNASR should be a wake-up call for a dancehall-skewed media.
"We need a monitoring system that will diversify especially radio," said McLaughlin, who produces music for his Rusty Car label. "We're not knocking dancehall but there are people out there who would love to hear substantive sounds on radio," he added.
Stern warning from commission
The electronic media has been heavily scrutinised by the Broadcasting Commission in the past year. In early 2009, it ordered the banning of suggestive songs by dancehall acts like Vybz Kartel and Mavado.
Last month, the commission's chairman, Dr Hopeton Dunn, issued a stern warning to owners of cable, radio and television stations. He said the commission would recommend that payola (the practice of payment for airplay) be seen as a criminal offence.
Rumours of rampant payola have dogged local media for many years. Music-industry insiders claim some disc jockeys, television producers and print journalists have accepted large sums of money to promote artistes.
The PNASR thrust is not the first time Jamaican musicians have taken on media over equal exposure for their productions. It was commonplace in the late 1960s and early 1970s when artistes like Bob Marley challenged Radio Jamaica to play more local music.
Perry Henzell's 1972 movie, The Harder They Come, was based partly on Jamaica's corrupt music scene, in which big business determined what and whose songs got played on radio.
Nearly 40 years later, Parkes says the PNASR is once again attempting to set the record straight.
"At the moment, reggae is not in a healthy position and we owe it to those who made it such a force to get things right," he said.

ONLINE REGGAE GAME
Morrissey
Twenty-two year old founder of jamaicansmusic.com, Alex Morrissey, has just launched his new online dancehall/reggae game, Songwrita.
Featuring lyrics from top Jamaican dancehall/reggae artistes such as Vybz Kartel, Mavado, Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Gyptian and I-Octane, Songwrita, is expected to thrill thousands of dancehall and reggae fans around the world with its interactivity.
Grounded in the principle of catching lyrics as they fall from the sky, this action game requires players to select an artiste, based on his or her most popular song. Participants are challenged with various obstacles to put the lyrics of the selected song together before it is skipped. Players have to successfully put the lyrics together to move to the next level.
Said Morrissey of the game: "I am delighted to have launched this game because dancehall and reggae music is an international entertainment staple that influences so many cultures around the world - Songwrita will definitely help to bring popularity to upcoming artistes and further establish the strength of our music around the globe - something that we are all proud of."
Users of the game will also be pleased to note that all the songs in the game are linked to www.iTunes.com for instant purchase.
An online shop is also embedded in the game, which allows users to purchase T-shirts with the faces of their favourite Jamaican artistes. T-shirts will be shipped worldwide for purchasers.
"This is definitely a different way to package our music and Brand Jamaica to the world - it is exciting, innovative, action-packed, fun and right at users finger tips," said Morrissey.
The young man also launched www.jamaicansmusic.com two years ago, and has welcomed waves of Jamaican music lovers from all over the world weekly.
The site has some 15,000 Jamaican songs and 4,000 music videos, ranging from all genres of Jamaican music - from rocksteady to dancehall and reggae.
Users of the site have the option to mix their own music through the site's Virtual Disc Jockey (VDJ).
Other artistes featured on Songwrita are Denyque, Wayne Marshall, Lady Saw, Munga, Protoje, Aidonia, Gaza Slim, Popcaan, Ryno, Chan Dizzy and Jah Vinci. Songwrita can be played at www.facebook.com/Jamaicanmusic.
BRAND NEW SINGLE FROM REGGAE/DANCEHALL RISING STAR BLAZE 'WEH MI HEAR'
Which he Talks of the things he's hearing in the music business in jamaica, Blaze is also booked to perform at STING 2010 this year, which he will be performing his latest singles.
Blazing his way onto the dancehall scene is Andrew Folkes, better known as Blaze to many lovers of dancehall music. Not a newcomer to music, he has been deejaying professionally since 2006, but has been in love with music since the age of four.
Born January 6, 1989, the twenty-year-old released his first song on his own Kollege Kru label, called ‘You Can Make It’ on the Triumph Riddim in February this year. Now Blaze's new single Wah Sleep, is in steady rotation on the radio stations with a video to be release soon.
A humble youth with an even humbler background, Blaze has been writing music since the age of eight years old; at that time artistes like Shaggy and Beenie Man had the youngster’s attention with their style and versatility. After he realized his love for music and that he was musically talented, he started singing in his community and church. He continued honing his talent in high school and it was really no surprise that his favorite subject was English, a valuable tool for his career choice, he says “English was my favourite class, and I used what I learnt in English to write songs.”
Blaze, a past student of Excelsior High School, had to balance school and music, and formed his own crew, the Kollege Kru, with a couple of friends who had also decided to take music seriously. His determination never waned even though money was not readily available to pursue his dream of becoming an artiste and most times he would walk after school to several studios in and around the corporate area just to stand at the gate, sometimes standing in the rain hoping that one day his voice would be heard and he would get the chance to record for a producer.
This happened when he walked into Gang Bang Studio one day and met the owner, Skatta Burrell who at the time was managing another artiste, Aidonia, who listened to him and gave him encouragement and advise which included him finishing school before going into the business fulltime. Being a good student in school has translated into the artiste that Blaze has become, as he listened and embraced the constructive criticisms he received to perfect his skills.
Mr. Isaiah Laing of Supreme Promotions who is now in charge of his career was one of his hardest critiques and insisted that he finished school before entering the entertainment industry and assisted him financially during his high school years while giving him the medium to improve his craft. Blaze did his first professional recorded single ‘Player Being Played’ along with a video for the same song in 2006 upon graduating from high school and has never looked back.
He did ‘Wine and Bubble’ in 2007 and had his first real experience of how hard and heartless some players in the music industry can be, but that was not a deterrent. He took a break to rethink and refocus and in December of 2007 recorded ‘You Can Make It’ for Yardlife Entertainment which was released in 2008 and received good airplay on the airwaves. He has recorded three songs this year.

REGGAE-MUSIC PIONEER LEAVES A LEGACY OF GREATNESS
Howard Campbell, Gleaner Writer
Reggaemusic lost one of its pioneers last Friday with the death of keyboardist Glen Adams, who died at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI). He was 65 years old.
Adams' wife of 18 years, Judy, told The Gleaner that he was admitted to the UHWI one week earlier, but she did not give a cause of death. He had lived in Brooklyn, New York, for more than 30 years and was visiting Jamaica when he became ill.
Known as 'Capo', Adams was most active as a musician and performer during the mid- and late 1960s when he was a member of the Hippy Boys and the Upsetters, two of the most influential bands in reggae history.
The latter backed The Wailers on Duppy Conqueror and Mr Brown, which were produced by Lee 'Scratch' Perry. Adams wrote Mr Brown, an eerie song about a three-wheeled coffin prowling the streets of Kingston.
Mr Brown, which features a memorable organ intro by Adams, is rated by critics as one of The Wailers' most creative.
The Hippy Boys and the Upsetters also included the Barrett brothers, Aston and Carlton on bass and drums, respectively; and Alva 'Reggie' Lewis on guitar. They played on numerous hit songs, including Stick By Me by John Holt, and Delroy Wilson's Better Must Come and Cool Operator.
Those songs were produced by Bunny Lee in the early 1970s. Most of Adams' recording sessions were done with Lee, a former auto-parts salesman who entered the music business as a producer in the mid-1960s.
"Glen was the man who brought that great organ shuffle to reggae, he was a force to be reckoned with but never really got his due," Lee told The Gleaner.
Adams was born in Jones Town, the son of a Jamaican mother and father who hailed from St Vincent. He started his music career as a singer with The Heptones and once formed a duo with another young singer from Denham Town named Ken Boothe.
After relative success as a solo act, Adams began playing keyboards for producer Arthur 'Duke' Reid. Moving to work with Lee, Adams had instant success, appearing on saxophonist Lester Sterling's monster hit song Bangarang (featuring Stranger Cole and Lloyd Charmers) and Everybody Needs Love by singer Slim Smith.
Adams, however, is best known for his years with the inspirational Perry.
With the Barrett brothers and Lewis, he played on Return of Django, a 1969 hit for Perry in Britain.
In addition to Holt and Wilson, the quartet were also behind hits from singer Max Romeo. At the height of their success with Perry, the Barretts left to join The Wailers and became a cornerstone of Bob Marley's band in the 1970s.
Adams moved to New York where he continued recording. In recent years, he worked with hip hop artistes for his Capo label and made guest appearances during shows by American reggae bands such as The Slackers.
Glen Adams is survived by his wife and a son. Another son pre-deceased him.
DOUBLE DOSE OF 'RIDDIM TWINS' FOR GRAMMY
Sly (right) and Robbie.
Howard Campbell, Gleaner Writer
With multiple nominations under his belt, master drummer Sly Dunbar took recent news of another Grammy Award nomination in stride.
He and long-time production partner Robbie Shakespeare were nominated for two albums in the Best Reggae Album category. They are One Pop Reggae, and Made In Jamaica.
The former is a collection of songs done for their Taxi label by various artistes including singers Cherine Anderson, Courtney John, Lutan Fyah and Jimmy Riley. Made In Jamaica is a collaboration with French club maverick Bob Sinclar.
Like the other nominees, little was heard of One Pop Reggae and Made In Jamaica, but Dunbar is not disturbed by the lack of airplay.
"Wi not really disappointed because they weren't really available to everybody, but they still got some play," he told The Gleaner.
He said One Pop Reggae was inspired by the work ethic of two of the 'Riddim Twins' biggest heroes.
"What wi do is follow the trend of Studio One an' Motown an' record a lotta tune," Dunbar said. "Yuh can't waste tune, wi learn dat from Berry Gordy an' Coxson (Clement Dodd)."
Sinclar is best known in club circles throughout Europe. Early this year, he travelled to Jamaica to work on remix versions of some of his biggest hits with Sly and Robbie at the Anchor studios in Kingston.
Sean Paul, Shaggy, Queen Ifrica and Tony Rebel were some of the acts who worked on Made In Jamaica.
Dunbar and Shakespeare are no strangers to the Best Reggae Album category.
They produced Black Uhuru's Anthem, the album that won the inaugural award in 1985 when the category was known as Best Reggae Recording.
The duo walked away with the statuette in 1999 for Friends, a collection of cover songs by Maxi Priest, Mick Hucknall of Simply Red and Ali Campbell of UB40.
The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, which oversees the Grammys, have been criticised in the past for their selections in the Best Reggae Album category.
Dunbar, however, believes most of the winners have been deserving.
"Some really good albums have won, I don't have a problem with most a them," he said.
Isaacs Meets Isaac by late singer Gregory Isaacs and Zimbabwean singer King Isaac, Buju Banton's Before The Dawn, Revelation by Lee 'Scratch' Perry and Legacy - An Acoustic Tribute to Peter Tosh by Andrew Tosh, are the other nominees for the 2011 Best Reggae Album category.
The Grammy Awards is scheduled for February 13 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

WAYNE WONDER NO LONGER WITH VP RECORDS; RELEASES NEW SINGLES ON HIS SINGSO/NYAMCASH LABEL
Grammy nominated reggae singer Wayne Wonder, having finally secured his release from VP Records, is ready to soar and is eagerly anticipating a wealth of success starting now and into the New Year.
An affable artiste, known for his quick smile which goes all the way to his eyes, Wayne has been battling challenges which have resulted in his career being put temporarily on pause for close to two years.
“It was quite unfortunate that the dispute with the record company (VP) escalated, but all that is water under the bridge now,” the suave singer explained, sounding very relieved.
“I am ready to work. As a matter of fact, it’s more appropriate to say that the work is continuing and I know that all Wayne Wonder fans are going to love it,” the artiste christened Von Wayne Charles declared with more than a tinge of excitement in his voice.
Already, Wayne has released a few new singles, working with top reggae and dancehall producers and also wearing the producer’s cap himself.
The song, If I Ever, produced by Wayne on his own SINGSO/NYAMCASH label and mixed by Tony Kelly, has been doing quite well on iTunes. Debuting at #4 on the iTunes Reggae Charts, If I Ever has received massive attention. It has been getting excellent reaction from radio and sound systems throughout the world, and may very well be on its way to being another signature tune for the smooth-voiced singer.
Wayne has also teamed up with dancehall group, T.O.K. for a song which is making a loud statement in Jamaica and overseas. Entitled Girl Dem Follow, it was produced by Stephen 'Di Genius' McGregor on his new Winnings riddim. Girl Dem Follow has been described as “having a great, infectious vibe.
Additionally, Wayne is off to Japan, where he will be doing a total of six shows between December 18 and 26. He will be performing at venues in Tokyo, Zurich, Kyoto, Alchi, Ibaraki and Numazu.
Wayne Wonder has enjoyed quite a bit of success in reggae music. His career exploded globally in 2003 when his album No Holding Back and the single No Letting Go were released on the major label, Atlantic Records. The smooth single dominated Urban and Pop radio (reaching #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 Pop chart) in America and the album, No Holding Back received a Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album, a MOBO Award in the UK, three BMI Urban awards, and a live performance on NBC Television's Saturday Night Live.
The follow-up single and video Bounce Along reached #12 on the UK pop charts. Wayne’s inspired version of Hold Me Now (originally recorded by the Thompson Twins) appeared on the 2004's successful 50 First Dates (starring Adam Sandler / Drew Barrymore) movie soundtrack and was produced by No Doubt's Tony Kanal with a video directed by Gil Green for Madonna's Maverick Records label. Wayne also anchored the hit track Anything Goes (w/ CNN: Capone & N.O.R.E and Lexxus) for the Def Jamaica compilation which received a Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album. These songs, among so many of Wayne's bonafide hits have been crowd favourites as he headlined an extensive world tour with his Entourage Band in 2004-05 performing in North America, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia, and Africa Wayne, as his career evolves, reaffirms his pledge to “always empower fans with clean, positive songs”.
Persons interested in doing interviews can send their requests via email.
Wayne is now in Japan and returns to Florida at the end of December

Is it right to use the birth of Christ for material rejoicings involved in decorations, Christmas dinners and the exchange of gifts, or is it right to worship the coming of Christ only in Spirit?
Christ is only suggested in social Christmas festivities, but He is seen and felt as an everlasting, ever-joyous fact in the cradle of divine ecstasy. Unless you make the effort to really get acquainted with the ever-living Christ, born as new wisdom and new happiness within you, I am afraid you will let the precious instructive Christmas season pass by without heed.
I am not telling you to omit the social festivities. What I want is that you not omit the paramount spiritual factor in your Christmas celebration. Add to your social celebration of Christmas the celebration of bringing Christ a second time in your meditative consciousness. Prepare yourself to celebrate Christmas in the real way:
Make your heart an altar of Christ-love. Love all races as the uniform dwelling place of the omnipresent Christ.
Forgive all your imaginary and real enemies even as Christ forgave His adversaries.
Govern all the actions of your life with the honesty and fearlessness of Jesus Christ.
Behold the omnipresent joy of Christ in all men, in all saints, in all creatures, in the star-peopled cosmos, and in the temple of your own thoughts.
Exchange spiritual gifts by giving your good qualities to those who need them and by receiving the soul-qualities of those who are great and who love you for your own good.
Exchange gifts with the thought of giving Christ the gift of your heart and receiving the gift of Himself in the cradle of your calm consciousness.
Make the unknown Christ known within yourself by seeing Him born a second time as the ever-new, ever-increasing joy of your daily deep meditation.
