INTRODUCING KEERA ROOTZ - MUSIC FROM THE HEART "SWEET RUB-A-DUB"!
|
|
|
|
(Kingston - Jamaica 18th, January 2011) "When music is a part of you, there's nothing you can do but share it," so says Keera Rootz who describes herself as "eclectic." From the Kleva Roots Family Production label, the upcoming Roots/Reggae artiste believes message must be in the music and despite her desire to be trendy and appreciated by teenagers and young adults especially in Jamaica, she is adamant about keeping the authenticity of Reggae in her songs.
Keera released a single, entitled "Sweet Rub-A-Dub" on a compilation album that also features tracks by stablemate Asante Amen as well as Little Hero, Determine and Teflon to name a few. The song she says "comes from the heart" and is a comparison between her love for music and love for a spouse.
Keera Rootz always knew she could sing but the thought of entertaining an audience had never crossed her mind until she braved the unthinkable, “her first performance”. It was the year 2008 and as she waited, it was as if she just stopped thinking, becoming almost oblivious to what was happening around her. Performance anxiety had just begun to get the best of her when the MC introduced her and in that instant, while making her entry, Keera Rootz came to life.
The performance lasted for about 15 minutes and went very well and Keera felt herself exhale, thinking to herself that she could continue doing this, ‘forever.’ She went through her routine basking in the positive response, satisfaction and appreciation of the audience; that mostly comprised of co-workers, managers and well wishers from her job, extended to her through cheers and the request for an encore. 'It felt great' she remembered as the performance seemed to end as quickly as it started.
The following day Keera was still receiving congratulations from her friends, colleagues and other patrons , who had attended the corporate party she performed at, who were still in awe at how well she had done. One of the calls she received was from the manager of the group L.U.S.T., who had also performed at the event. He told her that a well known local producer was interested in meeting her based on his report of her performance.
Unknown to her then, the producer was Fattis Burell, known for breaking international artistes such as Sizzla, Luciano and Capleton. Keera remembered her first studio session with Fattis, “just sing” he said as he recorded her. She recorded a few singles for him, which was not released before moving on. Since then Keera has matured, she has come to that place within her where she is able to “just relax and be creative”. The end product has been satisfactory thus far and marks for her the beginning of a new life of, ‘being in love with music’. Sweet Rub-A-Dub expresses just that as Keera Rootz' clear crisp vocals belts out the lyrics, “You’re the first thing on my mind when I wake up in the morning" on the track. Her vocals are melodious, strong and harmonious. Keera Rootz, a promising new entrant to the Reggae music industry.

RISEUP!

Watch the trailer and visit the official RiseUp website.
In celebration of Black History Month, we present RiseUp, an award-winning documentary film on Jamaican Music culture.
There is a place on earth where music is not just entertainment, it's a way of life. Far from the tourist resorts, RiseUp travels to the heart of contemporary Jamaica and its flourishing underground music scene. On an island where reggae is considered the voice of the people and an outlet for survival, three aspiring artists - Turbulence (a charismatic lyrical master from the ghetto), Ice Anastasia (the privileged uptown artist), and Kemoy (a shy angelic songstress from the country) - seek to "rise up" into the legendary eminence of their iconic predecessors. Deep in the ghettos where reggae was born, music continues to be a key form of expression for ghetto youths, who still face crippling inequalities, poverty, and violence. The award-winning film combines interviews with local underground musicians and Jamaica's music elite, with an energetic and inspiring soundtrack that gives life to an entire nation. RiseUp is a celebration of struggle and the elevation of the human spirit, a testimonial of what hope and courage can achieve in a land which is largely unseen, but certainly not unsung.
Welcome to the Jamaican underground music scene.

I hope millions see this movie." - Terry Swinton, author of Lazarus and the Hurricane: The Freeing of Rubin Hurricane Carter .. "The scope of its content allowed it to work within the thematic but break out into deeper territory...That 'versatility' was an important part of that program and it's rare to find works that can cross over in such a strong thematic. As a documentary in its own right, it is also rare today to see longitudinal works such as this and audiences respond strongly to that and appreciate the depth." - Richard Sowada, Australian Centre for the Moving Image . "ImageNation was extremely proud to produce the New York City premiere of RiseUp at Lincoln Center. This film aligns perfectly with our mission. By taking a candid look at three socially, economically and aesthetically diverse artists, the film makes a bold and uncompromising statement about economics, opportunity and cultural identity in Jamaica." - Moikgantsi Kama, Image Nation

SOLDIERS OF JAH ARMY

Soldiers Of Jah Army SOJA brings "Born in Babylon" tour to Hilo By Lisa Chaly
The buzz in the air is one of excitement as fans eagerly await the arrival of SOJA, or "Soldiers of Jah Army," live in concert at the Hilo Civic Auditorium on Sunday, Jan. 23, at 7 p.m. With this concert tour, they will be bringing an arsenal of awesome new songs from their latest album, "Born in Babylon," along with all of their previous hits. It is no wonder why SOJA has gained so much popularity in the past decade; their style of reggae music brings a new perspective to the genre, twisting in melodic messages from an American perspective, with depth and emotion that elevates the mind and stirs the soul.
Hailing from Washington DC., the SOJA band members have been playing together since grade school. Lead vocalist Jacob Hemphill (also on guitar) and bass player, Bob Jefferson, met when they were in first grade, shortly after Jacob returned to Virginia after living in Africa with his family. During their middle school years, they added friends Patrick O'Shea (keyboards), Ryan Berty (drums) and Ken Brownwell (percussion) to the mix and began to explore their sound as a group. At first, they played mostly hip-hop and rock music, but felt something was missing in the message of those popular genres. Turning to the smooth, soulful reggae music of Bob Marley and Peter Tosh, they soon found their calling.
When asked who has been his greatest inspiration in life, Jacob answers, "Bob Marley, I guess. Not many people can reach so many people while talking about one people." It was the profound message of universal love and triumph through strife that created a revolution for reggae artists everywhere, but what sets SOJA apart is at the root of their own story. Instead of talking about 'babylon' from an outsider's view, SOJA brings to life the perspective of growing up, not in poverty, but in government-saturated communities in Arlington, Virginia, across the Mason-Dixon line from the White House. With their newest album, "Born in Babylon" they feel, "This is the album we've been wanting to make for ten years. At first, we were hard core old-school, but then we got new school and inventive. This is what we've learned from all that...it is hard roots drum and bass, big wide guitar and vocal melodies, and two and three-sided lyrics with two and three-sided messages."
Since the release of their first full-length album in 2002, "Peace in a Time of War," SOJA has had many hit songs that are cherished by audiences everywhere. Among just a few of the songs to gain them national and international recognition were "True Love," "Rasta Courage," and "Peace in a Time of War." They quickly became cemented into the reggae world as their tours became larger and their fan base expanded rapidly. Jacob shares that one of his most memorable performance experiences was on their first tour abroad. He reminisces, "We were like, 'Wow, so they like the songs.' Really, that drove us a lot; looking at it in hindsight." From that moment forward, their success has only grown. Motivated by adoring crowds and a message to share, SOJA has definitely become a favorite among reggae music fans around the globe.
In 2006, their second full-length album, "Get Wiser," was something of a breakthrough for the band. With an in-depth exploration of the duality in their music, set upon beautifully haunting melodic complexities with hard drum and bass, interlaced with multi-dimensional lyrical poetry, this new culmination of inspiration would set the precedent for their future albums. Jacob shares, "When you listen to an artist, you can either have a series of one-liners, or you can tell a story with your music. We set out to tell a story, it's like poetry; dancing around an entire theme, but never putting a period on anything. It is like the two sides of a coin, but you can see them at the same time." Apparently, SOJA has found their niche, finding their spot on the list of Top 10 Reggae Albums on iTunes and has remained in the top 100 since its release. Some of the most popular singles of the "Get Wiser" Album include "Open My Eyes," "You Don't Know Me," and "Can't Tell Me," which continues to get major radio play (especially on college campuses) across the United States and places such as France, Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, St. Maarten, Costa Rica, Mexico, Guam, and Tahiti.
After the incredible success of their second album, SOJA began touring more intensely, both nationally and internationally, adding on horn players Hellman Escorcia (saxophone) and Rafael Rodriguez (trumpet). The band has enjoyed sharing the stage with such notable musicians as Citizen Cope, Matisyahu, Ben Harper, Slightly Stoopid, Damian Marley, Steel Pulse, Govt Mule, Umphrees McGee, and more. Currently, these 'Soldiers of Jah Army' are averaging 150 shows a year, touring every major city in the U.S. and reaching audiences of thousands in attendance throughout Canada, South America, Europe, and the South Pacific. In 2009, they released the documentary DVD "SOJA Live in Hawaii: A Marc Carlini Film," which highlights their 2008 Hawaiian tour from four shows, on four islands, with five cameras following them to capture the raw power, energy, and everything in between, that goes into their live performances.
SOJA's recently released third album, "Born in Babylon" has "catapulted them to the upper echelon of reggae bands," according to The Reggae Review, adding, "The music is tight and the selection is right. Jacob Hemphill epitomizes what it means to be a reggae songwriter with simple, yet multi-layered lyrics and messages." Indeed, SOJA has carved their name into the stars as they continue to rise to the challenge of keeping their music fresh, real, and true to the root. Stemming from Jacob's own life philosophy, the message of unity is clearly a main theme in their music. "We decide our global boundaries. I would love to see us more accepting of one another," tells Jacob when sharing his personal vision. He adds, "Forwards ever, backwards never."
As SOJA continues to move forward on their mission to spread good vibes and meaningful music, fans will continue to flock joyfully. Big Islanders can enjoy SOJA live in concert Sunday, Jan. 23, at the Hilo Civic Auditorium at 7 p.m. Advance general admission tickets for the all-ages show are priced at $25. SOJA Fan Club members can purchase tickets now at MusicToday.com. Hilo tickets available online at TicketWeb.com, charge by phone at 1-866-468-3399, and also at the following retail locations: Big Island Surf Shops in Hilo, Waimea and Kona, Music Exchange stores in Hilo and Kona, CD Wizard in Hilo, and Hilo Hawaiian Hotel. PBS GIVES REGGAE TV A NEW & IMPROVED TIME SLOT!
|
|
|
|
Hermosa Beach, CA (January 14, 2011) - The very popular TV show, ReggaeTV, will move to Sundays at 10:30 PM beginning January 16, 2011 on KVCR Channel 24; PBS for San Bernardino/Los Angeles.
"It's a big move," says director/host Rich Demaio. "It shows that KVCR thinks a lot of the show to move it to such a great time slot. It will be the last show you watch before you go to bed Sunday night. What a great way to finish up the weekend!"
ReggaeTV first aired on cable in 2008 and began airing weekly on KVCR in October 2010. It has quickly risen in popularity. Though the show was picked up for 13 episodes, they will rerun the entire set beginning the second week in January thus allowing for 26 total weeks of Reggae programming. "If you missed it, now is a great time to catch up, or just see them again," says Demaio.
With the recent January 1st retirement of KCET as a PBS station in Los Angeles, KVCR will likely pick up many new viewers as well as a wider broadcast range. "It's going to be a great year. We're continuing to edit new shows for the second season and getting great support from the station, as well as tons of new viewers. Season two will include episodes from Reggae icons like Michael Rose and Half Pint.
Longer "director's cuts" of the show can also be seen at www.onreggaetv.com. For further information about scheduling and broadcast of ReggaeTV, viewers may contact Ben Holland, KVCR's station manager at www.kvcr.org.

IEYE'S VALENTINE CONTEST
|
|
|
|
THE BEST COLLABORATION SINCE BOB MARLEY & CHRIS BLACKWELL
|
|
|
Kingston, Jamaica: Legendary artist manager Copeland Forbes, Managing Director at Comar Productions LTD recently announced that he has signed talented Canadian female reggae singer Bonnie Casey to a five year management contract. Forbes, one of the most experienced and knowledgeable artist managers in the industry has worked with reggae icon Bob Marley, Jimmy Cliff, Luciano, Bunny Wailer, Peter Tosh, Marcia Griffiths, Garnett Silk and the late Gregory Isaacs.
“I see Bonnie as the female version of Bob Marley" Forbes said. "Not only does she have an incredibly vocal range but she has passion, charisma, beauty and a stage presence that is magical."
Casey garnered major attention last year with a stellar performance at the annual Jamaica Day Celebration in Toronto, Canada where she entertained thousands of screaming fans who cheered as she belted out a heartfelt rendition of the Jimmy Cliff classic 'Many Rivers to Cross.' She again turned heads with a smashing performance of "Willow Tree" and "Tune In" at the November 20th 2010 tribute concert for the late Gregory Isaacs at The Ronnie Williams Centre in Jamaica. Now that she is signed to Comar Productions, Forbes is predicting an extremely busy 2011 for Bonnie as he coordinates tours and performances for her in Europe, Asia and North America.
"In my almost fifty years in the reggae business, and for the hundreds of talented individuals I have discovered, managed or worked with, I must say I have an eye for spotting talent. Bonnie is an extremely talented artiste. We have a lot of touring and recording to do this year and I see an extremely bright future for her" he said.
Bonnie who was born to an Irish father and a Jamaican mother is described by those around her as vibrant, outspoken, unique, and as having a caring personality. She began singing at the age of 5 years old and benefited from voice and drama lessons at the Beckett School for the Arts in Toronto. The former Miss World Canada Beauty pageant finalist and fashion model draws her influences from Etta James, Bob Marley, Alton Ellis and Gregory Isaacs. She sings jazz, blues and contemporary songs but is focused on lover’s rock and rock steady rhythms as she seeks to build a long term career in the reggae industry. Her fresh approach to music, her unique song writing ability, along with her versatile vocal range will no doubt give listeners that 'wow factor' that has been missing with many young acts currently in the industry. Using music as a communication tool, she intents to write and perform songs that music lovers can relate to. Her debut album is set to drop in late 2011 and will feature Sly & Robbie and Dean Frazier, who are short listed as producers for the project.
“I feel excited and very optimistic to be working with Copeland and his team" Bonnie said. "He is one of the best in the business. God has blessed me with a great voice and with Copeland’s guidance, the sky is really the limit.”

Inner Circle/SPY v SPY Rocks Brazil
"Reggae Rock Surf Music Festival"
Most people know Inner Circle via "Bad Boys," the ubiquitous "Cops" theme song that typified Inner Circle as one of reggae's most successful crossover groups ever.
On the legendary band's latest CD Blazzin' Fire: Classic Cuts (DubShotta/SoundBwoy Ent), the two-time Grammy winners create one of the hardest-hitting, most lyrically serious albums to be heard in recent years. Joined by an all-star group of guests, including the likes of Buju Banton, Pitbull, Stephen and Damian Marley, Gramps from Morgan Heritage, Anthony B and more. Blazzin' Fire: Classic Cuts re-asserts the depth of Inner Circle's musical history.
It all makes perfect sense when you realize that Inner Circle are survivors, one of a handful of pioneering reggae artists still around with the credentials and artistry to do it, with a rich history--especially their classic reggae hits with lead singer Jacob Miller--too often overshadowed by their pop success. January 20th, Inner Circle will join forces with Australian group Spy v Spy for the Brazil Reggae Rock Surf Festival tour, and then return home for the Bob Marley Movements: 18th Annual 9 Mile Music Festival with Stephen, Damian, Julian and Kymani Marley, and Slightly Stoopid.

CEN’C LOVE :
|
|
Musician/Singer/Songwriter, Fashion Designer, Visual Artist, Cen’C Love is a 21st century renaissance woman.
Born in America to Caribbean parents, Cen’C was raised between Kingston and Atlanta spending time equally between the two.
In Atlanta, she attended Dekalb School of the Arts. There along with talents such as crooner Lloyd, professional dancers LaKendrick, and Saheedah Fishenden among others, she studied dance, drama and writing. She was trained in classical voice by Jamaican born opera singer, Mrs. Dawn-Marie James nee Virtue.
Cen’C has the sultry voice and soulful sounds of a Billie Holiday, the musicianship of Lauren Hill and the word wit of Jill Scott.
For Cen’C Love art is a lifestyle. Traveling throughout most of her summers with her fashion designer/dancer mom, she attended art and trade shows around the US where she received some of the inspiration that she now applies to her work.
None of this should be surprising since Cen’C is the prodigy of the illustrious “Wailers” family of Reggae and the daughter of founding member of the acclaimed group, Neville Livingston, AKA Bunny Wailer.
The Wailers’ legacy is clearly apparent in Cen’C’s socially conscious songs. Songs such as SYSTEM, which describes the Babylon matrix control type system and THESE LIES about women with low self-esteem and their obsession with artificial identities. Her message of love is poignant and inspiring in songs like PARADISE and HEY YOU, stripping away the fear of baring our souls to love.
In addition to music, Cen’C embraces a natural holistic lifestyle through the practices of Yoga, Meditation, Qi-Gong and holistic nutrition. She is a very environmentally conscious woman who was raised in a green household, before green became the buzzword it is today.
Always on a quest for WISDOM and OVASTANDING, Cen’C loves to love and shares this love through her music.
In her own words:
“I was born free with the real truth inside of me
Provided by the will of the almighty
Free to be who I’m destined to be”.
Cen’C has performed on stages in Jamaica, Atlanta, Los Angeles New York and Amsterdam. In Atlanta at the 2008 Natural Hair Show and at the Centennial Park Wednesday Wind-down in July 08, she honed her talent in front of very appreciative audiences. She appeared at the Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam 08 and at the Reggae Awards in New York in the spring of 2009.
She has had numerous radio and television appearances and was featured in the Jamaican Gleaner and in High Times magazine.
Her recent and most rewarding accomplishment to date, however, was becoming a mother for the first time at the end of 2009.
With a new baby, a new attitude and a brand new sound, Cen’c Love is ready to share her infectious brand of Reggae Soul with the world.
