In A Glory Hound World - Winter 2011

EARLY REGISTRATION DEADLINE LOOMING

The early season registration period is ending at midnight on Monday, January 31st for most Glory Hound Event races.  If you haven’t entered the races on your race calendar yet, now is the time to do it and save money at the same time.

Early registration discounts, which are ending on Monday, include the Lake Junaluska Duathlon, French Broad Challenge Triathlon, Enka Triathlon at Biltmore Lake, MedWest-Haywood Triathlon and all races at the Lake Logan Multisport Festival.

LAKE LOGAN RECEIVES USA TRIATHLON DESIGNATION

USA Triathlon has selected the Lake Logan International Triathlon as the Mid-Atlantic special qualifier for 2011 and 2012. With this designation, competitors who finish in the top 33 percent of their age group during the Aug. 6 Lake Logan race will qualify to compete in the 2011 USA Triathlon Age Group National Championship on Aug. 20 in Burlington, Vt.

“The selection of the Lake Logan Triathlon as a USAT Special Qualifier gives national exposure to this event and venue,” Greg Duff, president of Glory Hound Events and originator of the Lake Logan Triathlon, said. “Athletes from as far north as Pennsylvania will travel to Lake Logan for an amazing event, the chance to qualify for nationals and experience the beauty of Western North Carolina.”

The Mid-Atlantic region is comprised of North Carolina, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.

The USAT designation follows the announcement the prize purse for the international distance race has been increased to $2,500 by the Todd Stien Foundation.  Not only will more athletes be racing at Lake Logan, representing more states, but the quality of the field will also be heightened.

This is the third time USAT has designated Lake Logan for a championship event.  In 2009 Lake Logan hosted the USAT Aquathlon National Championships and the regional aquathlon championships in 2010.

EVENT SPOTLIGHT 1 – LAKE JUNALUSKA DUATHLON

If you are runner or cyclist thinking about venturing into the world of multi-sport, there is no better way to start than a duathlon.  This sport, which has seen resurgence over the last two years, allows people to experience the essence of a triathlon without getting their hair wet.

The Lake Junaluska Duathlon embodies the spirit of the sport with two short run legs sandwiched around a beautiful bike leg.  The event, now in its third year, takes place on Saturday, April 9 at the Lake Junaluska Conference & Retreat Center.
The 2.2 mile run legs are held entirely on the roads and trails surrounding the lake while the 20 mile bike leg takes riders through the Crabtree and Iron Duff sections of Northern Haywood County.  Every turn is staffed by local volunteers and every important intersection manned by law enforcement so you will feel safe and secure throughout the race.

Registration is now open with an entry fee of $30 for current USA Triathlon members.  Non-members will pay an additional $10 for a day-license.  The entry fee increases to $40 on February 1. For more race information and link to registration, click HERE.

In conjunction with the race, the YMCA of Western North Carolina is conducting an 8-week, 16-session duathlon training program at their Woodfin location in Asheville.  This clinic is
designed for the athlete with at least a solid running and/or biking base, but looking to take the next step into multisport. The clinic will meet twice a week on - Tuesdays @ 6:30pm AND Saturdays @ 11:00am. The first 12 sessions will be 60 minutes in duration, with the final 4 sessions lasting 90 minutes. The cost will be $75 for YMCA members, $90 for non-members.  For more information, contact Brenda at equus777@aol.com

PARTNERSHIP LAUNCHED WITH TEAM KATTOUF

Glory Hound Events is proud to announce a new partnership with TeamKattouf to provide comprehensive training and nutritional plans at a very reasonable price. We will be offering two twelve-week training plans: one for those training for a sprint triathlon and one for an international distance triathlon. In addition to being race specific, the nutrition plans are gender specific, tailored to the specific needs of men and women athletes.

The plans are priced at $79 and will be under the guidance of TeamKattouf founder and noted sports nutrition consultant and multisport coach, Dr. Rick Kattouf.

TeamKattouf was born from the passion Dr. Rick Kattouf had for health, fitness, nutrition, and sport. From a power and strength background, Rick turned himself into a top ranked multisport athlete. Rick’s knowledge in medicine, physiology, anatomy, and his ability to listen have made his coaching a huge success. For Dr. Kattouf and TeamKattouf, it is about assisting individuals to achieve optimal health and fitness and to find the ‘champion’ within.

EVENT SPOTLIGHT 2 - THE LAKE JUNALUSKA BUNNY RUN

There is no better place to welcome spring than at beautiful Lake Junaluska for the second Lake Junaluska Bunny Run 5K & 10K.  This race was redesigned in 2010 with new courses and inside registration and post-race area.  The race is the kick-off to Easter weekend at the Lake Junaluska Conference & Retreat Center that also includes a Good Friday service, an Egg Decorating Contest and Egg Hunt and an Easter Sunrise service.

The 5K and 10K will follow the same course that encircles the lake and includes both road, trail and wooden bridges.  At the end of 5K, those competing in the 10K will reverse course and complete the same loop from the opposite direction.  This new twist will add a completely different perspective and challenge to the second half of the race.

Lake Junaluska is putting out the welcome mat to both individuals and running clubs for this race.  In addition to a low entry fee of $20 (before 3/30), runners can also stay in one of two on-site hotels at special Easter weekend rates.  Running clubs or any organized group with five or more participants can enter the race for $15 per person provided all entries are mailed in the same envelope.

HAYMED TRIATHLON RETURNS – SORT OF

The old Haymed Triathlon will return to the mountain racing scene with a new name and new date in 2011.  The MedWest-Haywood Triathlon will be held Saturday, July 9 at the Haywood Regional Health & Fitness Center in Clyde, just 25 minutes west of Asheville.

This race will fill the void left with the cancellation of the Asheville Triathlon and provides athletes, particularly newcomers to the sport, with a pool-swim race in the middle of summer.  The 300-yard swim will take place inside the HRFC pool, while the gentle and fast 10 mile bike will travel along rivers and through farmlands just north of the venue.  The 5K run course takes runners through beautiful Jones Cove.

The MedWest-Haywood Triathlon will be the focal point of a training program conducted by the Asheville YWCA.  The YW Triathlon Group is now in its fourth year having helped nearly 100 athletes reach their goals since its beginning. This comprehensive training includes a 4-month progressive program and takes participants of all levels to a successful triathlon. Training includes a complete schedule, weekly group rides and/or runs, specific workshops in each discipline and transitions. The group is led by Jeff Carnivale, who is a certified instructor of ChiRunning, Cycling, Pilates, and a personal trainer. For more information, contact Jeff at trainer@ywcaofasheville.org

EVENT SPOTLIGHT 3 – RAMBLE RUN AT BILTMORE PARK

On May 7, 2011 hundreds of runners and walkers will have the opportunity to experience a new and unique racing venue. The inaugural “Ramble Run at Biltmore Park” will offer both 12K and 5K races organized by the Asheville Track Club and presented by Mission Sports Medicine
.
Starting and finishing at Biltmore Park® Town Square and running through The Ramble® Biltmore Forest, both races promise to be scenic and enjoyable, yet challenging. They follow a course that one runner compared to “running on the Blue Ridge Parkway without the cars.”

Runners will follow Schenck Parkway in Biltmore Park through The Ramble’s south gate to the 5K turnaround at Overlook Park. The 12K course continues through The Ramble past Longmeadow Park, along the paved Dingle Creek trail, over Bow Bridge and back to Biltmore Park Town Square.

A fitness expo, food, live music and other post race festivities await participants and their families at the finish. Whether you’ve been racing in the Asheville area for years or brand new to running, this is one event you won’t want to miss.

Maggie Moonlight Registration Opens
If conjuring up images of warm weather has been challenging lately, now’s a good time to think ahead and sign up for one of Western North Carolina’s most popular summer road races.

Registration for the Maggie Valley Moonlight Race will open this Tuesday, Feb. 1, and run through race day. The fee to participate in this 8K race is $25 through July 30 and $30 during August.

Hosted by the Maggie Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Moonlight Race will be held Saturday, Aug. 27. Those participating in the 8K race will gather at the Maggie Valley Fairgrounds in the early evening and run the same course as was used in 2008, Duff said. The course takes runners 1.2 miles up the valley to Ghost Town, then 2.4 miles in the opposite direction, before returning them 1.2 miles to the finish line back at the fairgrounds.

Major sponsors for the returning Moonlight Race to date include Mission Health Systems and the Smoky Mountain News. All event information, including a link to online registration, is available at www.maggievalleymoonlightrun.com.
