RASTAMOUSE KIDS TV SHOW SPARKS RACISM ROW
source: Steve Myall, Daily Mirror

With its singalong rhymes and upbeat tales, Rastamouse is like many other children’s TV shows – except this one has sparked a bitter row about racism.
The patois-speaking puppet, who fights crime and spreads love and respect, has been a huge hit with the BBC’s younger viewers since the show hit screens at the end of last month.

He has dreadlocks, a Rasta Tam (woolly hat), rides a skateboard and uses words like “irie” (happy) and “wagwan” (what’s going on?).

His mission is to “make a bad ting good”. And the stories feature his all-rodent reggae band, Da Easy Crew, who hang out at the Nuff Song recording studio in Mouseland.

Celebrity fans include Lily Allen, Dizzee Rascal, Adrian Chiles, Radio One DJ Rob Da Bank and actress Tamzin Outhwaite. But the series has also provoked hundreds of complaints – some parents fear it is racist and encourages the use of slang.

One concerned mother on the Mumsnet forum said: “I’m most worried about her saying words like ‘Rasta’... My child is white and I feel if she was to say this to another child who was not that it would be seen as her insulting the other child.”
And a parent on Bumpandbaby.com said: “Just watched a couple videos... I think it is racist.”

One of those unhappy with the show is Levi Roots, the man behind the Reggae Reggae sauce brand.

Levi told the Mirror: “I was asked to do the voice of the mouse, but I said no. I am a Rastafarian and I wouldn’t want to portray a Rastafarian as a mouse. For me it is about integrity.

“I’d never portray a Rasta as a pig or a mouse as I don’t think the values of being a Rasta are served by that. If it was a lion that would be very different, a lion is strong symbol in Rastafarianism.

“Personally, I do not support this representation of us. But we do need representation on TV and as this is the first it should be given a chance. People need to decide whether it is right or wrong for themselves. I have seven children and I would most certainly not want them to watch this show.”

Rastafarian poet Benjamin Zephaniah is less critical. He said: “It’s not the greatest representation of the community, and the accents are not very accurate – probably because people wouldn’t understand a real one. But it’s the first, so of course it is going to attract criticism.

THE AMBASSADOR INTRODUCES NEW RELEASE: NEW ROOTS
Reggae/soul/rock artist The Ambassador stands out among others by displaying a strong, soulful vocal presence combined with funky, upbeat reggae rhythms. The Ambassador is Stephen Gabriel Lewis, a Virginia native now living in sunny southern California.

In 2005, Lewis toured, wrote and recorded with THE SEED as their frontman/guitarist, releasing their self-titled debut album in April 2008. Since relocating to San Diego in 2009, he has performed and recorded with some of SoCal's best rising reggae musicians, including members of Pato Banton's The Now Generation and the Slightly Stoopid offshoot C-Money and the Players Inc.  As a follow up to “The Ambassador Presents…” EP of 2009, The Ambassador's first full-length solo album entitled "New Roots" is set to be released March 1, 2011.

The Ambassador put together a great group of SoCal musicians for this one, including Tony Saenz (The Now Generation), Shaga (Bloodfiyah Angels) and Carlos Marin, Jr. (Mandorico).  "New Roots" has gotten some good early press, with the first single "Dreaming" being played on San  Diego's 91X FM.  The album will be featured on ThePier.org, BranchOutMusic.com, The LIST magazines, Nug Mag magazine and many more in the weeks to come.

RISEUP! WATCH THE TRAILER AND VISIT THE OFFICIAL RISEUP WEBSITE

In celebration of Black History Month, we present RiseUp, an award-winning documentary film on Jamaican Music culture.

There is a place on earth where music is not just entertainment, it's a way of life. Far from the tourist resorts, RiseUp travels to the heart of contemporary Jamaica and its flourishing underground music scene. On an island where reggae is considered the voice of the people and an outlet for survival, three aspiring artists - Turbulence (a charismatic lyrical master from the ghetto), Ice Anastasia (the privileged uptown artist), and Kemoy (a shy angelic songstress from the country) - seek to "rise up" into the legendary eminence of their iconic predecessors. Deep in the ghettos where reggae was born, music continues to be a key form of expression for ghetto youths, who still face crippling inequalities, poverty, and violence. The award-winning film combines interviews with local underground musicians and Jamaica's music elite, with an energetic and inspiring soundtrack that gives life to an entire nation. RiseUp is a celebration of struggle and the elevation of the human spirit, a testimonial of what hope and courage can achieve in a land which is largely unseen, but certainly not unsung.

Welcome to the Jamaican underground music scene.

GLEN WASHINGTON PRESENTED WITH LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
It is with Great Joy that we congratulate Glen Washington on his most recent award: The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented by Clarendon Jamaica Music Awards, in honor of Glen's long overdue work and contribution in Reggae.

Glen said " I am very honored and excited to receive this award in my homeland, when you are recognized in the country you are born in, it shows great appreciation and respect for the life work put forward. It's more than an honor to be recognized this way".  He was so elated and surprised by the award Glen goes on to say that "it is so surprising that they would recognize me as Clarendon has produced many wonderful Artists such as: Everton Blender, Freddie McGregor and Cocoa Tea to name a few, so it is with the utmost respect and joy for this recognition".

Glen is now moved to the legendary status of Reggae Singers.  I personally congratulate him as I have seen how hard over the years he has worked. Moving from drummer with some of the most prominent groups in Reggae to striking out as a solo singer. Hard work, sweat and tears certainly do payoff!!!!!

As most of you may know, Glen has over the years been nominated twice for a Grammy (Reggae), last year with his album (Destiny). However he is yet to actually receive one. And that's ok with him, he states "there are many deserving Reggae Artiste out there, and he congratulate those who have won", his elation right now is that Jamaica  the place of his birth recognized his contribution. He humbly says "there is still time for a Grammy". (smile)

With that said we will also like to announce that: Fastlane International is no longer the booking agent for Glen Washington.

He is available for bookings with no limitations! USA or Europe!!!!

BUJU BANTON FOUND GUILTY ON COCAINE CHARGES
(Jamaica Gleaner)
Jamaica’s reggae superstar Buju Banton, real name Mark Myrie, has been found guilty of three cocaine related charges. A 12 member jury this evening delivered the verdict in the Sam M Gibbons building in Tampa which houses the United States Middle District Court, Florida Division.

Buju Banton Buju was found guilty on conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute five kilograms or more of a mixture and substance containing a detectable amount of cocaine. He was found guilty for aiding and abetting others in using a communication facility in the commission of a felony. He was also found guilty for knowingly and intentionally possessing a firearm in furtherance of and during the course of a drug-trafficking crime. But he was found not guilty for attempting to possess five kilograms or more of cocaine. Buju was tried last week on four charges.

Buju throughout the trial maintained he was innocent of the charges saying he played no part in any conspiracy to possess cocaine. In denying the claims against him, Buju, through his attorney David Oscar Markus, argued that the artiste never became a willing participant of the cocaine conspiracy charged in the superseding indictment. The defence said tasting the cocaine, talking about cocaine and simply being present at the warehouse is not sufficient to find Buju guilty of the crimes charged.

This trial, which began on February 14, was the second attempt of the US government to convict the Jamaican artiste. A first trial last year was declared a mistrial after jurors failed to arrive at a unanimous position. Buju was arrested on December 10, 2009. His long-time friend Ian Thomas and a James Mack were arrested the same day when they attempted to buy cocaine from undercover detectives in a Florida warehouse. Thomas and Mack pleaded guilty but Buju denied the charges. He said he decided to fight in federal court because he knows he is innocent.

DAX : :
DAX LION....He represents a multi-talented individual, ambitious and as his works show- a hardworking and determined one.

Such a blessing was brought forth on August 11, 1988. He was born in Kingston, Jamaica. He grew up in Maryland, in the said area mentioned above. From as early as five years of age, Dax began singing , however it was not until age twelve that he officially discovered such a blessing- his TALENT-.

Dax does not only excel musically, but also academically. He attended the St Peter and Paul Preparatory School after which the infamous Ardenne High School was his secondary choice. Destined to have a career in the Entertainment Industry as a Musician he completed a Diploma in Music Media at the School of Performing Arts – Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts. Music is a business and many artistes are encouraged to have a grasp of Business Administration. With this Dax attended the University College of the Caribbean where he started a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. This however was not completed as the love for entertainment and the initiation of a major dubbed Entertainment and Cultural Enterprise Management at the UWI was his next step. He is currently enrolled in the programme and will be graduating in 2011.

All work and no play makes jack a dull boy- with this in mind, Dax’s spare time is spent in the following In the studio, meditating about Reggae’s future and partying.

Like other musicians, Dax has many role models. Such artistes include Bob Marley, Stephen Marley, Damian Marley. Jimmy Cliff, Michael Jackson and Buju Banton. With the above it is obvious that Dax is a lover of Reggae .

His genre of music is Reggae, however, with the change and the invention or collaboration of various beats, Dax embraces the Reggae genre and also FUSION, i.e., an array of various genres and beats. It should be noted however, that reggae is always in the mix.

Whilst many may see Dax as an upcoming artiste, he has been around and worked with producers who are in high demand. Such producers include, Mario C, Kurt Riley, Casper, UIM Productions, One Motion Music and Notice Productions, just to name a few. His contribution to the industry has been great also. His works have been displayed at various signature events inclusive of Manifesto|JA ART’ical Exposure @ Bookophilia, Versatile’s Birthday Bash, Rasta Vibes (a show which was planned by Dax and staged at Bob Marley Museum), "Conversations with Julian Marley and Richie Spice", and small events such as weddings.

Dax has received airplay for his single “Forever” on the U.I.M Label on Newstalk 93 FM and on Axes Media in the Bahamas. Today, Dax has written a lot of songs but his Single, “Gas Pon It’, which he is gearing up to release to the general public very shortly, should soon reveal this talent to the world at large in due time.

"Throughout history, it has been the inaction of those who could have acted; the indifference of those who should have known better; the silence of the voice of justice when it mattered most; that has made it possible for evil to triumph." Haile Selassie I, Addressing the United Nations, 4 Oct 1963

Reggae is the foundation, but look out for Dax as he is Reggae’s Future.

AMBASSADOR:

SMILE
Elena Boerner
“There are hundreds of languages in the world, but a smile speaks them all.”

A smile not only crosses geographic boundaries, it also crosses the boundaries of culture, background, age and beliefs. What’s more, it works the same magic in them... all!

A warm smile can make a child feel better, as surely as it can cheer up an old man. It can soften hearts and firm up commitments. It can mend friendships and break tensions. It can reassure and give support. It can say ‘I love you’ and ‘congratulations.’ It can make deals. It can make friendships. It can make memories or even make your day.

But perhaps, most important of all, a smile can make the world a better place for the person who gives it – you!
