SINGER/SONGWRITER TREVOR HALL LIVE AT MONTBLEU CASINO RESORT -SUNDAY, MARCH 27
LAKE TAHOE, NV – Singer/Songwriter, Trevor Hall, will perform in Lake Tahoe inside the MontBleu Theatre at MontBleu Casino Resort, Sunday, March 27, 2011.

Trevor Hall is a young singer-songwriter, whose sunny, reggae-infused pop sound draws equally from folk, reggae, and hip-hop. His gritty vocal style has been compared to Dave Matthews, and his uniquely spiritual approach to pop music has earned him comparisons to Bob Marley.

Trevor has worked with such producers as John Alagia (John Mayer, Jason Mraz, Dave Matthews) and The Laboriel Brothers (Sting, Paul McCartney), has appeared at the famous Lollapalooza festival and has toured with such acts as Stevie Nicks, Jason Mraz, The Wailers, and Ben Harper. Trevor is a musician’s musician, as exemplified by Colbie Caillat who claims "Trevor has one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard."

Born in South Carolina and raised in California, Trevor Hall developed an affinity for summery acoustic music, from the beachside ambiance of Jack Johnson to the leisurely stroll of Bob Marley. Having spent his teenage years at a boarding school for the arts, Hall dedicated his life to music upon his high-school graduation. He self-released Lace Up Your Shoes in 2004; two years later, the teenaged Hall prepared for his major-label debut with Geffen Records. The Rascals Have Returned, an introductory EP produced by John Alagía, featured a soothing mix of reggae, folk, and roots rock.

Hall continued to tour, performing shows alongside the likes of Ben Harper, Matisyahu, and the Wailers. He also returned to the studio to record a self-titled sophomore album, which emphasized the artist's reggae influences upon its release in 2009. The album embodies a soulfulness, depth and passion far beyond the artist’s 22 years. His youthful exterior belies the depth and intensity of an old soul. Trevor’s music is an unconventional mix of acoustic rock and reggae that serves as a vibrant landscape for his thought-provoking, inspiring lyrics.  Produced by Marshall Altman (Matt Nathanson, Kate Voegele, Marc Broussard), Trevor Hall encompasses the entire cosmology of this one-of-a-kind young artist, from the opening “Internal Heights,” with its sitar-accented electro-groove, which recalls Peter Gabriel at his most expansive, to the meditative and intimate closer “Many Roads,” in which Trevor seems to be channeling his primary inspiration, Bob Marley. Indeed, “Many Roads” could stand as Trevor’s “One Love.” “We’ve heard there are many paths, but it turns out they all lead to the same place,” he says of the song’s ultimate point.

The album contains one captivating song after another. “The Lime Tree,” a serene ballad that has become a fan favorite, features a guest vocal from Trevor’s friend Colbie Caillat, while “Where’s the Love” marries a buoyant midtempo groove to a call for people to cast away the prejudices that divide them and come together in a global community. At the other extreme is the blazing rocker “Volume,” which turns out to be about meditation. “Sometimes when you’re playing music, there’s a silence in the sound,” he points out. “Even when it’s externally really loud, internally it’s very still.” The summery, easy-going “31 Flavors” is the closest thing here to a traditional love song. “It was inspired by an old crush,” he says. “I used that juice to write it.”

Hall’s previous recordings have appeared in numerous films and television shows including his recording, “Other Ways,” which was in the Shrek the Third feature and soundtrack. Trevor also covered the Band’s “Life is a Carnival” for the star-studded tribute album, Endless Highway: The Music of the Band.

Doors open at 8p.  Show starts 9p.  This is an all-ages show.  Tickets are just $12.00 in advance, or $15 the day of show, and available at all Ticketmaster outlets, and at the MontBleu Box Office, or online www.ticketmaster.com.  You can also purchase by phone by calling MontBleu Resort, 775-588-3515.

RISEUP! WATCH THE TRAILER AND VISIT THE OFFICIAL RISEUP WEBSITE

In celebration of Black History Month, we present RiseUp, an award-winning documentary film on Jamaican Music culture.

There is a place on earth where music is not just entertainment, it's a way of life. Far from the tourist resorts, RiseUp travels to the heart of contemporary Jamaica and its flourishing underground music scene. On an island where reggae is considered the voice of the people and an outlet for survival, three aspiring artists - Turbulence (a charismatic lyrical master from the ghetto), Ice Anastasia (the privileged uptown artist), and Kemoy (a shy angelic songstress from the country) - seek to "rise up" into the legendary eminence of their iconic predecessors. Deep in the ghettos where reggae was born, music continues to be a key form of expression for ghetto youths, who still face crippling inequalities, poverty, and violence. The award-winning film combines interviews with local underground musicians and Jamaica's music elite, with an energetic and inspiring soundtrack that gives life to an entire nation. RiseUp is a celebration of struggle and the elevation of the human spirit, a testimonial of what hope and courage can achieve in a land which is largely unseen, but certainly not unsung.

Welcome to the Jamaican underground music scene.

MORE ARTISTS ANNOUNCED FOR SIERRA NEVADA WORLD MUSIC FESTIVAL
More Artists Announced for the SNWMF 2011
Vusi Mahlasela, Brigadier Jerry, The Cables, Duane Stephenson,
Saritah and Jah Love Sound System Added to This Year's Lineup

The Sierra Nevada World Music Festival is pleased to announce that Vusi Mahlasela, Brigadier Jerry, The Cables, Duane Stephenson, Saritah and Jah Love Sound System have been added to the ever-growing list of artists performing at the festival's 18th annual gathering taking place June 17-19 at the Mendocino County Fairgrounds located in Boonville, California.  These artists join Midnite, Anthony B the other dozen artists that were confirmed to perform earlier this month.

Vusi Mahlasela was born in Lady Selbourne, Pretoria in 1965 and grew up in Mamelodi, a township famed as a cradle of culture which has produced many of Black South Africa’’s greatest musicians and writers.  By the age of seventeen, Vusi was a seasoned performer. He had soon tired of singing cover versions of popular songs and discovered that he had a flair for composition and begun to write his own music and lyrics. He found himself drawn to themes with social and political significance and he became much in demand at political rallies and cultural events.  Over a musically and socially consequential career, South African singer-songwriter and poet-activist Vusi Mahlasela has successfully followed his muse and continued to give back to his country. - More

While his introduction to an American audience probably came from his 1985 release of "Jamaica Jamaica" on the RAS label, the Brigadier Jerry had been building a major following in Jamaica by appearing live on the mike, first on the original King Stur Gav Hi-Fi system and later over the Twelve Tribes' Jah Love Muzik Sound System and releasing occasional singles for the local market.  One thing about Brigadier Jerry, he chats pure consciousness on the mike, even when the prevalent vibe in the dance was slackness. A longtime member of the Rastafarian Christian sect "Twelve Tribes of Israel", Briggy takes every opportunity to teach the youth about righteous runnings and has recorded many tracks pointing out the error of certain ways.  -

With the classic recordings “Baby Why” and “What Kind of World” the legendary Jamaican harmony vocal group The Cables secured their place in music history. The Cables burst on the scene in 1965, when Ska was the rage. Founded by lead vocalist Keble Drummond, along with harmony singers, Vince Stoddart and Elbert Stewart, The Cables released “Ska Days” in 1966. But it was in 1968 when the group rocketed to stardom when Clement “Sir Coxsone” Dodd took them into Studio One recording studios. The Cables brought with them the lyrics and the upbeat, lilting melody of “Baby Why”. Over the years persistent demand for the group has resulted in The Cables reuniting for numerous international festivals. Today, the group is a quartet, consisting of original members as well as Owen “Bobby” Dockery, tenor, who joined the group in 1971.

Singer/songwriter Duane Stephenson greatly impacted upon Jamaica’s musical landscape with the release of his stunning introductory album “From August Town” on Cannon/VP Records in early 2008, demonstrating that the heartfelt lyrics, sincere vocals, insightful commentaries and deeply rooted spirituality that made roots reggae a global force lives on in the 21st century. Following the release of “From August Town” Duane performed on several major stage shows across Jamaica, including Reggae Sumfest and the Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival and toured throughout North America, Europe and the Caribbean with Dean Fraser, the celebrated saxophonist and leader of the Blak Soil Band that supports Tarrus Riley, as well as the producer of “From August Town”.

South Korean born and raised in Western Australia, Saritah is a hard-working independent artist who has built a solid fan base across the country. Her releases to date include the debut album ‘Gratitude’, ‘These Days/You’re The One’ EP and most recently the extremely successful, inspiring and relevant album Ancient Forward. On Ancient Forward, positivity and affirmations sit organically beside the serious. Driving rhythm sections and programmed beats give way to space and melody; earthy textures create a worldly yet intimate album that for the listener, is a joy to hear. It is an album that flows and ebbs in a dynamic, colourful style that Saritah has cemented, as her own. An accomplished recording, it confirms Saritah as one of Australia’s most talented and exciting artists, with something to say.

Jah Love Sound began in 1974, but it wasn't until the early '80s, when selector Ilawi teamed up regularly with Brigadier Jerry, that the sound started to take off with the masses. It is the product of two musical inspirations coming together, taking parts of "Jah Mik" and "Jah Love Sound" to create "Jah Love Sound." They were the best combination as selector and dj around at that time. Jah Love Sound (aka Jah Love Muzik system) was run by the Christian Rastafarian sect, the Twelve Tribes of Israel.  Now based in New York City, Jah Love Sound continues to bring its unique brand of conscious Rastafarian roots music to the people both in local clubs throughout the area as well as at festivals world-wide. Look for them in the dancehall on Friday night.

LANCE-O!
Music is life and Reggae music, in particular, brings positivity and good vibes to people worldwide. It speaks all languages and crosses all borders.  In order to bridge that gap between the musicians and the audience of reggae it takes an mc/host that knows the crowd as well as a good dj to keep it flowing. There is an MC/host & DJ that can keep it all in synch he is LANCE-O.

Lance-O has been mcing some of the biggest reggae shows in the Americas since 1987 and djing even longer. His career started in a place where education was the key, at UNC-Wilmington. From these very humble beginnings he moved on to  the Reggae Sunsplash Stage in Jamaica to hosting the Tamika Reggae Awards at Madison Square Garden in New York City as well as a host on the annual Bob Marley Fest in Miami since its inception in 1992.

A reggae radio veteran, he syndicated his own entertainment report called ëReggae Vibesí that went worldwide and also created the tv program ëIsland Hoppersí which literally hopped from island to island throughout the Caribbean. Now a professional MC, host, dj and promoter Lance-O has established himself as the MC for reggae enthusiasts and caters well to surfers, islanders and Latinos. Growing up in Miami Florida has exposed him to the many cultures of the world.

BUJU'S DREADLOCKS IN PERIL

Buju Banton in happier times. - File Photos
Buju Banton in happier times. - File Photos
Arthur Hall, Senior Staff Reporter
Reggae superstar Buju Banton could lose his dreadlocks if he is sentenced to serve time in a federal prison.
Buju is facing a minimum of 15 years in prison after being found guilty on three drug and gun charges on Tuesday and is to be sentenced within the next three to six months.

His lawyers have indicated an intention to appeal but if that fails, the singer could find himself in prison for a long time, and that is where the locks, which are part of his religious belief, might be cut off.

United States-based Jamaican law Professor David Rowe yesterday pointed The Gleaner to several cases involving the wearing of dreadlocks in federal prisons.
Rowe noted that the federal circuit courts are split as to whether Rastafarians in custody should submit to prison-grooming regulations.

In two cases (Gartrell v Ashcroft and Hines v South Carolina), the courts upheld federal prison-grooming policies which are to cut excessively long beards and hair.
However, in another case (Benjamin v Coughlin), a Rastafarian was not required to cut his dreadlocks for a prison photograph.

A circuit court has also suggested that the federal government's prohibition of a dreadlocks hairstyle should be upheld for security reasons if necessary.
"The most significant case seems to be Hines v South Carolina's Department of Corrections ... which upholds prison grooming policies which have a rational basis despite the exercise of religious beliefs," Rowe told The Gleaner.

"The courts have generally held that security and disciplinary concerns, the need to properly identify inmates and the possibility that contraband and weapons may be hidden in dreadlocks pose a security risk to prison guards and the general public," Rowe added.

The US Supreme Court has said that constitutional protections, like the right to practise religion, do not end at the prison gates.

Rare success
The Congress has also said institutions can restrict religious liberties only for compelling reasons, like security, but the policies must be the least restrictive means to accomplish that.

However, federal prison inmates have rarely been successful in challenging prison-grooming policies.

In one case, a Native American inmate spent a year in his cell and lost other privileges before a federal appeals court ruled in 2005 that the California prison system's ban on long hair violated his religious freedom.

In a 2002 case, a group of Rastafarian and Muslim federal inmates challenged the grooming policy at the prison where they were housed and a court ordered the Bureau of Prisons to transfer them to other facilities that did not have such policies.
The court also ordered the federal prison system to evaluate inmates' religious beliefs and refrain from sending them to states with burdensome grooming policies.
But, in the case filed by the Virginia state prisoners, a federal appeals court ruled in 2008 that the Department of Corrections' argument that inmates could hide weapons and other contraband in long hair or easily change their appearance upon escape was a compelling enough reason to require trimmed hair.

Buju, the Grammy-winning artiste, hit the local music stage more than two decades ago as a slim, young, low-cut hardcore DJ with songs such as Browning and Deportee.

But it was as a Rastafarian with the blooming dreadlocks that he exploded on the world stage in 1995 with the massive album Til Shiloh.

Since then, Buju has sported the dreadlocks and, even though showing signs of a shave going into court last week, he has remained a well-respected member of the Rastafarian community.

Buju, whose real nameis Mark Myrie, won the 2010 Reggae Grammy for his latest album, Before The Dawn.

I-taweh:
Donavan "i-taweh" Cunningham was born in the hills of St. Ann, Jamaica to Rupert and Ruby Cunningham. Like most successful Artists, he comes from humble beginnings. I-taweh was raised in the farming community of Prickly Pole, just a few miles from the home where Bob Marley grew in Nine Mile. He spent most of his childhood farming alongside his father and four siblings.

Growing up he played music with his family and friends, but his musical career started shortly after his move from the country to Kingston in 1992, where he was given the name “Danny Gitz” because of his growing reputation as an outstanding guitarist.  He began his first tour with “High Symbol” in 1994.  He then went on to become the youngest member of the original Nyabhingi group “Mystic Revelation of Rastafari” and extensively toured Europe with them. During those years he was also doing significant work as a band leader for the original "Dance Hall King" Sugar Minott and later became the guitarist for Everton Blender.

His work with Everton Blender brought him to the U.S. in 2004 where he then became the bassist for the “Yellow Wall Dub Squad” a major backing band for headlining artists in the U.S. and the opening act for the artists they were playing for. His act was billed as  "Itawe" and often referred to as the "Reggae Lion".  He quickly gained popularity as the singing bassist, and his voice was likened to that of the reggae legend Burning Spear.  I-taweh says, "It is a compliment and I feel blessed because he has been a major influence in my life and my music."  His incredible versatility on guitar and bass, precise vocals, and vibrant stage presence has kept him in high demand not only for live stage performances but in the studio as well. He has recorded for several major artists such as:  Sade, Capleton, Morgan Heritage, Sugar Minott, Luciano, etc.  and on any given day you can hear his guitar licks playing on radio stations across the globe.   For the past few years he has been a band member and the opening act for artists such as the Abyssinians, Richie Spice, Anthony B, Gregory Isaacs, Yami Bolo, Ini Kamoze, Half Pint, Sister Carol, the Melodians, the Mighty Diamonds, Junior Reid, Tanya Stepehens and many more…

After 17 years of being a supporting musician, I-taweh took a one year hiatus from performances to pursue his solo album.  He has written and composed all of his own original music- and independently produced his first album as "i-taweh" named "Overload" under his own label TAP NAT MUZIK.  His album features world class musicians such as Horse Mouth Wallace, Remi Kabaka, Sly Dunbar, Benjy Miaz, Alphonso Wilson, Computer Paul, Dean Frasier, Bongo Herman, and Count Ossie Jr.  I-taweh’s unique and original sound comes from his Jamaican roots combined with inspirations from his travels abroad.  His music is diverse and reflects his passion for Human Rights and Social Justice making him the perfect choice for the soundtrack featured in the award winning movie “African Rush / The Ultimate Ride” and the big wave surf film  “THE FIND: Claiming the Nelscott Reef”.  He recently made a special apprearance on HYPE TV in Jamaica promoting his new music video for the song "Overload"  and was featured in UJAMA NEWS magazine as the "Reggae Lion".

"As a backing musician playing for other artists, I toured the world playing in Asia, North, South and Central America, Australia, Europe and the Caribbean Islands. It feels good to be coming back through to these places as a solo artist and having so many of my fans come out for the show" says i-taweh " I really appreciate and feel the love".

I-taweh is captivating audiences all over the world with his moving lyrics, confident stage presence, and phenomenal talent. Whether performing acoustic guitar with a stand up bass or his original roots and culture sound, his set is diverse and is winning the hearts of his listeners everywhere and continuously leaves his audience wanting more!

THE PRESENT
“Realize deeply that the present moment is all you ever have.”
