TRIBUTE ALBUM COMING FOR GREGORY ISSACS
Saxophonist Dean Fraser recently gathered an all-star cast to record a tribute album to lovers' rock legend Gregory Isaacs who died October 2010.

VP Records has not announced the release date yet.

The 16-track set features some of Isaacs' biggest hit songs such as Front Door, Mr Brown, Night Nurse, Storm, Soon Forward, Tune In, Number One, The Border, Love Is Overdue and Red Rose.

There are also underground favourites such as My Only Lover and Stranger In Town.
Recording for the project started last December at the Grafton studio in east Kingston. Guitarist Mitchum Chin, bass player Eoin Hoilette, drummer Kirk Bennett, and keyboardist Bowie McLaughlin are some of the musicians who worked on the album.

Some of the top names in contemporary reggae put their stamp on the 'Cool Ruler's' standards. They include Tarrus Riley, who did Front Door, Gyptian, covering Number One, Jah Cure (Mr Brown), Cherine Anderson (Soon Forward) and Alaine (Tune In).

Etana added her touch to My Only Lover, while the California band Souljah reworked Cool Down Your Temper.

Though he was in demand as a horn player during Isaacs' prolific chart period of the late 1970s and early 1980s, Fraser said it was not until the 1990s, when the singer moved to producer Gussie Clarke, that they began regular collaborations.
Fraser said he did backing vocals for many of Isaacs' hits for Clarke, including the anthem Rumours.

Isaacs died last year from cancer in London at age 60, leaving a catalogue of hits that ranks alongside those of other grass-roots reggae singers like Alton Ellis, Dennis Brown, John Holt and Freddie McGregor.

Though he had chart success in the early and mid-1970s with All I Have Is Love, Love Is Overdue and Storm, it was not until late that decade that he hit his stride with laid-back ballads like Tune In and Soon Forward.

SKA LEGEND ERIC MONTY MORRIS SET TO RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM PRODUCED BY SADIKI
New Single Now Available on iTunes!

ORLANDO, FL, MARCH 7, 2011 – With a career spanning some fifty years and an equal amount of hits, it is quite surprising that Ska Legend Eric Monty Morris has never released a full length solo album. That will change on March 29, 2011 as Eric Monty Morris releases his first studio album. The new album, part of a series called “The Living Legends Collection” (Buckley Records), will offer up brand new recordings of classic Morris hits such as “Penny Reel”, “Sammy Dead”, “Strongman Sampson”, “Oil in My Lamp”, plus seven other classic Morris songs.

The first single from the project, “Into This Beautiful Garden (2011 Version),” features Sadiki and was released on March 1st in digital format. Producer for the album is Jamaican Singer/Songwriter/Producer Sadiki, who also does a dual role as Recording and Mixing Engineer. “Doing this album was a great journey into an area of Jamaican Music that had it’s heyday in Jamaica, a bit before my time,” said Sadiki. “I’d always been a fan of Ska, but I became even more involved when I was asked to manage Mr. Morris back in early 2010. My hope for this release is that it helps to not only kick-start the fourth wave of the Ska music genre, but that it also helps to put some of the spotlight back upon traditional Ska music.

There were some challenges involved in producing the album, the major one being recreating classic songs with an updated feel so that they captivate a new audience, yet making certain that Morris’ tried and true fans would be appreciative of the new recordings. “I believe that we’ve hit the mark,” said Sadiki. The album’s eleven tracks were chosen on the basis of their popularity and how well they fit into the all-around vision for the album.

European and U.K. performances are scheduled for mid-April.

Through a worldwide digital distribution deal with Zojak Worldwide, “The Living Legends Collection – Eric Monty Morris” will be released in digital format on 3.29.11.

To schedule interviews or for more information, please contact A. S. Rozay at 954-353-7781 or by e-mail to asrozaypr@hotmail.com or James Lord with Zojak Worldwide at james@zojakworldwide.com.

REGGAE LEGEND TOOTS TO COLLABORATE WITH RAPPER EVE?

source: imagesnewsletter.com

Kingston, JA: International reggae/ska singer Toots Hibbert of Toots & the Maytals, whose 1968 hit single “Do the Reggay”, is credited with coining the word reggae, said in a recent interview that he would love to collaborate with US rapper Eve.
'EVE is a great artiste and I would love to collaborate with her on a song – old or new. I think it would be an interesting mix of our creativity and vocal style. She is one of the most versatile talents coming out of the hip hop movement...she can rap, write, act and has a lot of fashion style...great talent" he said.
Toots will have the opportunity to let his feelings known to Eve on March 12, 2011 in Kingston, Jamaica when she performs at the 7th Annual Excellence in Music and Entertainment (EME) Awards. The two met almost 10 years ago, when they performed at the 'Bob Marley, One Love Tribute Concert' at James Bond Beach in St. Mary.
"She was then and still is, a very beautiful artiste" Toots affirmed. "It was a pleasure meeting her and I look forward to seeing her in Jamaica again."
Toots and the Maytals, originally called The Maytals, are considered legends of ska and reggae music. Their sound is a unique, original combination of gospel, ska, soul, reggae and rock. Following the release of “Monkey Man” - the group’s first international hit in 1970 - they have recorded hits like “Pressure Drop”, “54-46 was my number,” “Monkey Man” and was featured in The Harder They Come, the 1972 film and soundtrack starring Jimmy Cliff, named as one of Vanity Fair’s Top 10 Best Soundtracks of all time. The group's current release, titled Flip & Twist which was released last year, has so far spent 3 weeks atop the Jamaica Music Countdown (JMC) Albums Chart and features Toots singing, R&B, funk, gospel, blues and country in his own inimitable Jamaican style. The next release will be a DVD of the documentary Reggae Got Soul: The Story of Toots & the Maytals which premiered on BBC last month.
"I am always working on new material and have a few singles in the pipeline for release by the summer and another studio album in production. I will continue to work on completing that album in between upcoming tours of Australia, North America and Europe" he said.
Last year Toots was honored at the EME Awards with a "Lifetime Achievement Award for his significant contribution to the reggae genre.
"It is always nice to be appreciated for your work and last year’s EME honour was particularly nice because it was a Jamaican award" he said.
This year to show his appreciation for what the EME is doing to move the industry forward, his label will be a sponsor of the glitzy awards show.
"D&F Music is pleased to support the growth of the EME Awards and the promotion of excellence in the music. Jamaica's music industry needs this type of award show to recognize and promote the standard of excellence necessary for us to continue to make music the world wants to hear" he said

BANKRUPT!! MAJOR FRENCH REGGAE RECORD LABEL CLOSES ITS DOORS
Illegal downloads blamed for Makasound's bankruptcy.

FRENCH reggae label Makasound filed for bankruptcy this year amidst mounting debt and online piracy which will sever an important link between both nations.
This is the latest reggae label to fold following the decline in music and the global economy. A liquidator was appointed to sell the company.

"We (became) bankrupt a few weeks ago, everything will stop in the weeks to come, (for) both physical and online music," stated Nicolas Maslowski co-founder of Makasound, in an interview with the Sunday Observer.

The accumulated debt is in the millions of Jamaican dollars equivalent to "the price of two or three new humble cars".

The label distributed albums for Alton Ellis, Winston Mc Anuff, Black Roots, Leroy Smart, The Rastafarians, Mikey Ras Starr, Black Roots 2, The Slickers, Rub A Dub Soldiers, Carl Harvy, Delroy Williams and many others.

Makasound, founded in 2002 by Maslowski and Romain Germa, started small but grew to become a respected reggae brand within France. The executives noted that the music business had become a pizza shop in which quick consumption of CDs and digital music was required to avoid the stale of piracy.

"Of course illegal downloading is one of the major problems if not the major. French people are the biggest illegal downloaders in the world. Also, of course the quality of reggae music is declining, sometimes to a level of shame," Maslowski told the Sunday Observer from his office in France.

MORE ARTISTS ANNOUNCED FOR SIERRA NEVADA WORLD MUSIC FESTIVAL
Vusi Mahlasela, Brigadier Jerry, The Cables, Duane Stephenson,
Saritah and Jah Love Sound System Added to This Year's Lineup

The Sierra Nevada World Music Festival is pleased to announce that Vusi Mahlasela, Brigadier Jerry, The Cables, Duane Stephenson, Saritah and Jah Love Sound System have been added to the ever-growing list of artists performing at the festival's 18th annual gathering taking place June 17-19 at the Mendocino County Fairgrounds located in Boonville, California.  These artists join Midnite, Anthony B the other dozen artists that were confirmed to perform earlier this month.

Vusi Mahlasela was born in Lady Selbourne, Pretoria in 1965 and grew up in Mamelodi, a township famed as a cradle of culture which has produced many of Black South Africa’’s greatest musicians and writers.  By the age of seventeen, Vusi was a seasoned performer. He had soon tired of singing cover versions of popular songs and discovered that he had a flair for composition and begun to write his own music and lyrics. He found himself drawn to themes with social and political significance and he became much in demand at political rallies and cultural events.  Over a musically and socially consequential career, South African singer-songwriter and poet-activist Vusi Mahlasela has successfully followed his muse and continued to give back to his country.

While his introduction to an American audience probably came from his 1985 release of "Jamaica Jamaica" on the RAS label, the Brigadier Jerry had been building a major following in Jamaica by appearing live on the mike, first on the original King Stur Gav Hi-Fi system and later over the Twelve Tribes' Jah Love Muzik Sound System and releasing occasional singles for the local market.  One thing about Brigadier Jerry, he chats pure consciousness on the mike, even when the prevalent vibe in the dance was slackness. A longtime member of the Rastafarian Christian sect "Twelve Tribes of Israel", Briggy takes every opportunity to teach the youth about righteous runnings and has recorded many tracks pointing out the error of certain ways.

With the classic recordings “Baby Why” and “What Kind of World” the legendary Jamaican harmony vocal group The Cables secured their place in music history. The Cables burst on the scene in 1965, when Ska was the rage. Founded by lead vocalist Keble Drummond, along with harmony singers, Vince Stoddart and Elbert Stewart, The Cables released “Ska Days” in 1966. But it was in 1968 when the group rocketed to stardom when Clement “Sir Coxsone” Dodd took them into Studio One recording studios. The Cables brought with them the lyrics and the upbeat, lilting melody of “Baby Why”. Over the years persistent demand for the group has resulted in The Cables reuniting for numerous international festivals. Today, the group is a quartet, consisting of original members as well as Owen “Bobby” Dockery, tenor, who joined the group in 1971.

Singer/songwriter Duane Stephenson greatly impacted upon Jamaica’s musical landscape with the release of his stunning introductory album “From August Town” on Cannon/VP Records in early 2008, demonstrating that the heartfelt lyrics, sincere vocals, insightful commentaries and deeply rooted spirituality that made roots reggae a global force lives on in the 21st century. Following the release of “From August Town” Duane performed on several major stage shows across Jamaica, including Reggae Sumfest and the Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival and toured throughout North America, Europe and the Caribbean with Dean Fraser, the celebrated saxophonist and leader of the Blak Soil Band that supports Tarrus Riley, as well as the producer of “From August Town”.

South Korean born and raised in Western Australia, Saritah is a hard-working independent artist who has built a solid fan base across the country. Her releases to date include the debut album ‘Gratitude’, ‘These Days/You’re The One’ EP and most recently the extremely successful, inspiring and relevant album Ancient Forward. On Ancient Forward, positivity and affirmations sit organically beside the serious. Driving rhythm sections and programmed beats give way to space and melody; earthy textures create a worldly yet intimate album that for the listener, is a joy to hear. It is an album that flows and ebbs in a dynamic, colourful style that Saritah has cemented, as her own. An accomplished recording, it confirms Saritah as one of Australia’s most talented and exciting artists, with something to say.

Jah Love Sound began in 1974, but it wasn't until the early '80s, when selector Ilawi teamed up regularly with Brigadier Jerry, that the sound started to take off with the masses. It is the product of two musical inspirations coming together, taking parts of "Jah Mik" and "Jah Love Sound" to create "Jah Love Sound." They were the best combination as selector and dj around at that time. Jah Love Sound (aka Jah Love Muzik system) was run by the Christian Rastafarian sect, the Twelve Tribes of Israel.  Now based in New York City, Jah Love Sound continues to bring its unique brand of conscious Rastafarian roots music to the people both in local clubs throughout the area as well as at festivals world-wide. Look for them in the dancehall on Friday night.

ON THIS DAY IN REGGAE
1969: Japanese DJ Boogie Man is born.
1974: DJ Don Yute is born in Kingston, Jamaica.
1995: Q-Q (Kareem Dawkins) is born.

I-taweh:
Donavan "i-taweh" Cunningham was born in the hills of St. Ann, Jamaica to Rupert and Ruby Cunningham. Like most successful Artists, he comes from humble beginnings. I-taweh was raised in the farming community of Prickly Pole, just a few miles from the home where Bob Marley grew in Nine Mile. He spent most of his childhood farming alongside his father and four siblings.

Growing up he played music with his family and friends, but his musical career started shortly after his move from the country to Kingston in 1992, where he was given the name “Danny Gitz” because of his growing reputation as an outstanding guitarist.  He began his first tour with “High Symbol” in 1994.  He then went on to become the youngest member of the original Nyabhingi group “Mystic Revelation of Rastafari” and extensively toured Europe with them. During those years he was also doing significant work as a band leader for the original "Dance Hall King" Sugar Minott and later became the guitarist for Everton Blender.

His work with Everton Blender brought him to the U.S. in 2004 where he then became the bassist for the “Yellow Wall Dub Squad” a major backing band for headlining artists in the U.S. and the opening act for the artists they were playing for. His act was billed as  "Itawe" and often referred to as the "Reggae Lion".  He quickly gained popularity as the singing bassist, and his voice was likened to that of the reggae legend Burning Spear.  I-taweh says, "It is a compliment and I feel blessed because he has been a major influence in my life and my music."  His incredible versatility on guitar and bass, precise vocals, and vibrant stage presence has kept him in high demand not only for live stage performances but in the studio as well. He has recorded for several major artists such as:  Sade, Capleton, Morgan Heritage, Sugar Minott, Luciano, etc.  and on any given day you can hear his guitar licks playing on radio stations across the globe.   For the past few years he has been a band member and the opening act for artists such as the Abyssinians, Richie Spice, Anthony B, Gregory Isaacs, Yami Bolo, Ini Kamoze, Half Pint, Sister Carol, the Melodians, the Mighty Diamonds, Junior Reid, Tanya Stepehens and many more…

After 17 years of being a supporting musician, I-taweh took a one year hiatus from performances to pursue his solo album.  He has written and composed all of his own original music- and independently produced his first album as "i-taweh" named "Overload" under his own label TAP NAT MUZIK.  His album features world class musicians such as Horse Mouth Wallace, Remi Kabaka, Sly Dunbar, Benjy Miaz, Alphonso Wilson, Computer Paul, Dean Frasier, Bongo Herman, and Count Ossie Jr.  I-taweh’s unique and original sound comes from his Jamaican roots combined with inspirations from his travels abroad.  His music is diverse and reflects his passion for Human Rights and Social Justice making him the perfect choice for the soundtrack featured in the award winning movie “African Rush / The Ultimate Ride” and the big wave surf film  “THE FIND: Claiming the Nelscott Reef”.  He recently made a special apprearance on HYPE TV in Jamaica promoting his new music video for the song "Overload"  and was featured in UJAMA NEWS magazine as the "Reggae Lion".

"As a backing musician playing for other artists, I toured the world playing in Asia, North, South and Central America, Australia, Europe and the Caribbean Islands. It feels good to be coming back through to these places as a solo artist and having so many of my fans come out for the show" says i-taweh " I really appreciate and feel the love".

I-taweh is captivating audiences all over the world with his moving lyrics, confident stage presence, and phenomenal talent. Whether performing acoustic guitar with a stand up bass or his original roots and culture sound, his set is diverse and is winning the hearts of his listeners everywhere and continuously leaves his audience wanting more!

HAPPINESS
"It is not easy to find happiness in ourselves, and it is not possible to find it elsewhere."
-- Agnes Repplier
