Rain Bird Smart (Weather Based) Controller

One of the best new technologies in recent years in the landscape industry has been the advent of "Smart" Controllers for your sprinkler system. Among the various brands and models available, the most advanced and one of the most affordable is the Rain Bird ESP-SMT Smart Controller. If your sprinkler system was installed by our company after June 2009, then you already know how great this controller is. If you haven't, it's really time you learned what you're missing out on.

The Rain Bird ESP-SMT is a weather based controller that manages your irrigation watering times for you each day, based on the weather. It looks at 5 different weather factors (exact rainfall, high and low temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and solar radiation) It also considers the amount of shade in each zone, what is planted in each zone, the slope, and the soil type of each zone. With all this data, it then calculates exactly how much water has been lost from each zone on a daily basis. The controller then determines whether or not each zone needs to come on that day, and if so - for how long. Very smart technology. It can decrease the water you are spending on irrigation by 30-70%!

Upgrading is fairly easy and the savings you receive are instant! And if you live in the Tualatin Valley Water District, you can also qualify for a $200.00 cash rebate for having us install this controller!

Call us today at (503) 524-3679 if you are interested in pricing information for upgrading your controller to a Rain Bird Smart Controller.

2 Recent Advances in Outdoor / Landscape Lighting

There are two big recent tecnhological advances in outdoor / landscape lighting that are worth mentioning. If you have an outdoor lighting system or are considering one, this article should be of interest to you.

  1. L.E.D. Lighting Comes of Age - Until very recently most outdoor / landscape lighting was done using Halogen or Incandescent light bulbs. And if you tried anything in L.E.D. the output was extremely weak and the color was an unatractive hue of blue. But with major technological advances L.E.D. technology is finally starting to take over and it honestly looks amazing! Companies like Kichler, FX Luminaire and Vista Pro have got the color temperature dialed in so well it is now a nice soft warm glow. And the  light output is just as strong as a traditional Halogen or Incandescent bulb. (See the photo on the right from a project we completed this month - All done with L.E.D. Lights). So why would you want to consider L.E.D. fixtures? First; Cost. It costs less to install an L.E.D. system (due to less wire, smaller gauge wiring needed, smaller transformer needed and method of wiring used). But more importantly, it cost less to use! Consider a typical 20 light fixtuure outdoor lighting system would cost around $10-$20 per month in energy usage. An L.E.D. system would generate the same amount of light but cost only $2 per month in energy usage! Second reason; Maintenance. L.E.D. lamps are warrantied to last a full 15 years before you'll ever have to change a bulb! That's nothing short of amazing! Call us today at (503) 524-3679 to arrange a free night time lighting demo to see what your landscape could look like! And be sure to ask us about the L.E.D. option!
  2. Astrological Timers - In the past, we have always used  timers with a dial on them to turn our systems on and off each night. The challenge with this kind of set up has always been that you have to go out and manually change the start time each month, as dusk changes. Not true any more! A simple $40.00 astrological timer can change all of that! We program this little timer with the current date, time, time zone, state we're in, which part of the state, when daylight savings time begins and ends, etc. And then your timer takes over automatically from then on! It can be set to automatically turn on every night at dusk and turn off every night at a fixed time, or at dawn. But regardless, once you set it, it will know when dusk and dawn are each day. So you will never have to go out and manually change your timer again!

Plant Spotlight - Korean Dogwood 'Satomi Pink'

We like to spotlight a plant or tree in each issue. This month we are highlighting the 'Satomi Pink' Korean Dogwood. Korean dogwoods have proven to be more disease resistant than regular flowering dogwoods. But the color of the patented 'Satomi Pink' is absolutely stunning. These smaller, ornamental trees (10'-15' mature size) make a nice tree that fits well in smaller yards yet packs a powerful punch of color throughout May and June.

Depending on size, you could pay anywhere from $100.00 for a 5-6' tree up to $250.00 for a larger specimin.

Call us today at (503) 524-3679 if you are interested in pricing information for this or any other trees or planting for your landscape.
