SOJA W/SPECIAL GUEST J BOOG REGGAE SENSATION COMES TO MONTBLEU CASINO RESORT

Tickets are just $20.00 in advance, or $25.00 at the door and available at all Ticketmaster outlets, and at the MontBleu Box Office, or online at www.ticketmaster.com You can also purchase by phone by calling MontBleu Resort, 775-588-3515.

Jacob Hemphill (lead vocals & guitar) met Bobby Lee (bass) in the first grade in Virginia, shortly after Jacob returned from living in Africa with his family. The two instantly became best friends, and in middle school found a common love for hip hop, rock and reggae music. Throughout middle and high school, they met Ryan Berty (drums), Patrick O’Shea (keyboards) and Kenneth Brownell (percussion). Together they formed SOJA. In the formative years the band gigged locally in the DC area while a couple of the guys finished school. All the while making plans to hit the road after graduation…

In 2005 the band hit the road… and they hit the road hard. Often dubbed “road warriors”, SOJA has brought their unique sound and stage show to nearly every city in North America, as well as many cities throughout Europe, South America, the Pacific Islands and the Caribbean. While touring in Puerto Rico the band linked up with sax player Hellman Escorcia & trumpet player Rafael Rodriguez.  These two exceptional musicians earned their position as SOJA’s mainstay horn section by helping further develop the band’s eclectic sound.

With no signs of slowing down - SOJA is planning a world tour for 2011/2012 in support of their upcoming album release. It’s all about the message in the music for this band. “People think we write music about the earth for the earth’s sake, but its not really like that.  If we harm the earth, it will reject us.  For all we know, its happened one hundred times before. This place gets too hot, that’s it.  Reset button. That’s why I sing what I sing - to pull us all in the same direction, the same future. Without that, were finished (Jacob Hemphill).”

There is no doubt about it. This band is on the forefront of a Revolution with hopes to bring about positive change: environmentally, politically and socially. “Maybe we need to WANT to fix it. Maybe stop talking, maybe start listening. Maybe we need to look at this world less like a square and more like a circle. Maybe just maybe God’s not unfair, maybe we’re all his kids and he’s up there.  Maybe he loves us for all our races, maybe he hates us when we’re all so racist.  Maybe he sees us, when we dont care, that its heaven right here, but its hell over there. Then maybe the meek will inherit this earth, cause it was written before… so…” Everything Changes - SOJA.

On tour with SOJA is J Boog (Born Jerry Afemata) is a singer born in Long Beach and raised in Compton, CA. Growing up in a large family, he was always surrounded by a lot of people and music. J's father is the chief of the family village in Aloa, Samoa. Boog was raised with a strong sense of that tradition and culture and he proudly carries it with him today and always. J met his favorite artist, George “Fiji” Veikoso in 2005 and began to work with him on music. . In 2006, J moved to Hawaii to continue developing his craft. J Boog released his debut album 'Hear Me Roar' in 2007. In 2008 J Boog joined a Wash House Music Inc, based in Hawaii and San Francisco.

Tickets are just $20 in advance, or $25 at the door, and available at all Ticketmaster outlets, and at the MontBleu Box Office, or online at www.ticketmaster.com You can also purchase by phone by calling MontBleu Resort, 775-588-3515.

SIERRA NEVADA WORLD MUSIC FESTIVAL ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: DUANE STEPHENSON AND THE EXPANDERS

Duane Stephenson

From Kingston, Jamaica's August Town, Duane Stephenson has a gift that extends beyond his role as a reggae singer. His work exhibits the versatility of many of music's greatest artists in the pop realm; mixing lyrics that address social ills, romance and global issues with unique phrasing, potent hooks and melodic changes – all delivered in an extremely nimble tenor that wakes the soul.   The artist's debut album,  FROM AUGUST TOWN  produced by reggae maestro and saxophonist Dean Fraser was heralded by Billboard magazine as one of six albums, "collectively galvanizing a roots reggae revival" with "lyrics that convey romantic longings and the anguish of ghetto realities with equal conviction."

A recent collaboration is an uptempo, inspiring ballad, “Better Tomorrow”  that features a soothing melody, soaring chord changes and lush vocal arrangements  echoing African song structure.  An accompanying video is directed by Ras Kassa the Guru. The illustrative lyrical storytelling of Duane Stephenson provides fertile ground for Ras Kassa's forward-thinking, unique directorial style. Watch Better Tomorrow Video here:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76Ncfy_UKjI

Duane Stephenson got his start in the music industry as part of  the group To Isis, getting the attention of Dean Fraser, and then began writing songs for other artists including Tarrus Riley, Luciano and Jah Cure, whose song "True Reflections" was written by Stephenson.  The artist makes his first appearance at this year's Sierra Nevada World Music Festival.

The Expanders

The Expanders began playing reggae music together in the summer of 2003, and today are one of the hardest working reggae bands in Southern California. They have come to be known for their vintage “rockers” style of reggae, played in the tradition of classic 1970′s Jamaican groups.  Their music is centered in three-part vocal harmonies and strong song writing, with lyrics that range from socially heavy, to playful and upbeat, to personal.

The songs on the self-titled THE EXPANDERS album were recorded between 2006 and 2010.  The band took the time to develop this recording with the goal that the music have an authentic vintage Jamaican sound. So, as time permitted during the busy schedules of all involved, the songs were composed and performed and recorded live in a few takes in the vintage Jamaican tradition with few overdubs.  Recently members of the band recorded acoustic versions of select songs from the record live in the Broken Complex studios. Watch is the original Race is Run from those sessions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9zkPNgElgo

In addition to performing their own original material and rare Jamaican scorchers, The Expanders have backed several vintage artists  at Sierra Nevada.  This year they will back The Cables in addition to performing their own Expanders band set for the first time at SNWMF.   Past Sierra Nevada World Music Festival performances were praised in The Beat magazine for recreating “the old classic Kingston rocksteady sound to a T.”

We are delighted to have Duane Stephenson and The Expanders make their first appearances at the 18th Annual Sierra Nevada World Music Festival.  We have added three more artists to round out the Sierra Nevada lineup, they are: Thomas Mapfumo, Mambo This and Jesus Diaz Y Su QBA.

PATO BANTON BRONGS HIS CONSIOUS VIBE AND LEGENDARY REGGAE MUSIC TO RENO, NV!

Late-Nite Productions and Speak Your Mind are proud to present Reggae Legend from Birmingham, England, Pato Banton and the Now Generation Band! Guests include Reno's own Jahzilla and DJ PostmOn. This amazing mix of conscious vibes and world energy are coming to The Underground in Reno, NV on Wednesday, May 11th at 9pm for the 21+. Advance Tickets are available at Recycled Records on Kietzke Lane or online at www.Ticketweb.com.

A Pato Banton concert is an event not to be missed and an experience not to be forgotten.

Positive Vibrations abound with a beat to keep you on your dancing feet, while Pato delivers a message that is food for the mind and soul. Many have considered his charismatic performance as live theatre where no show is alike and audience members become participants in the experience. Pato dialogues with the crowd on a range of topics including current day events and spiritual freedom while keeping the vibes upbeat and fun!  The direction of the concert is totally based on the feedback Pato receives from the audience as there is no fixed set list.  Many have said that the positivity generated from the stage has changed their lives forever.  Sometimes Pato invites his fans to join him in a prayer circle after the show, where some have cried while sharing their stories of contemplated suicide, isolation after losing a loved one, struggles with substance abuse and how their personal connection with Pato has given them the strength to “Stay Positive” & “Never Give In.”

The following Pato Banton story charts his rise from the most disadvantaged of circumstances in his youth, through a long and successful career as a world renowned reggae legend, back to his roots with a commitment to work for the benefit of young people in his community, and finally on a mission to spread the “Good News” & “Positive Vibrations” to the “Now Generation”.

In The Beginning

Patrick Murray was born in London in 1961, and moved to Birmingham when he was 8 years old. Pato’s stepfather (Lester Daley) was a DJ fresh from Jamaica and the house in which they lived became the weekend night spot for the local community. Pato was the lookout for these illegal parties, working on the door from the age of 9. In his early teens Pato started to gain his musical foundation on his stepfathers’ sound system called V-Rocket, from helping set up the equipment at first to later selecting the music and trying his skills on the microphone.  Patrick would stay up all night entertaining the masses and was given the name Patoo by his stepfather. (The name derives from a wise night owl in Jamaica, that stays up all night, calling “patoo, patoo.”)

By the age of 16, Ranking Pato became well known around Birmingham and would get regular work from various leading sound systems across the city. Within a short space of time, Pato became the number 1 MC in Birmingham, winning the title seven years in a row. At the age of 19 while working for Sufferer Sound System, Pato was invited to join a local roots reggae band called Crucial Music. Within a year Pato became the band leader, mc, singer/songwriter and manager, taking the band on tours of the UK and Europe. Pato’s first recording was a double A sided single with Crucial Music entitled “All Night Raving & Sensimilla.”  After five years, Pato’s notoriety as a British MC outgrew the popularity of the band, and he was forced to move on……..
