KARAMANTI GETS PERSONAL WITH HER MUSIC

Kingston, Jamaica – Dancehall artist Karamanti gets personal with her music by bringing a family issue to light in her latest single entitled “the tribute song”.

Being an artist that is known for addressing social issues and keeping her family life private, it is surprising to hear Karamanti pouring out her heart on this track. The song is called “the tribute song” and it is just that. Every line talks about an issue she and her entire family are dealing with. It is on the raid riddim by Money Green Music, which was officially released on iTunes on Tuesday, April 19th.

Karamanti says that it’s pretty sad that dancehall artists limit themselves to only a few topic and refuse to get out of the box, especially women who seem to focus mainly on men, money and sex. “I try to be different, I really don’t want to talk about the same thing everyone else is talking about. I never follow the crowd, it is just not who I am. I think my approach to music is the reason why I haven’t gotten that big break as yet but I rather to keep it authentic and never get that break than to go with the flow just to fit in. As for this song, I was in North America and when I got back home I was completely shocked to learn what had happen to my cousin. Being a person that tries to be honest in my music, I wrote about it,” explained Karamanti.

Additionally, Karamanti makes it clear both on and off the song that monies made by her from the tribute song will go towards assisting the family. To listen the tribute song visit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=te89SZT-MlQ and the iTunes link to purchase the album or singles from it is: http://itunes.apple.com/album/the-raid-riddim/id432958195

Karamanti will be performing at Culture Flex this Saturday, May 7th at the Kingston YMCA located at 21 Hope Road in Kingston.

SOJA W/SPECIAL GUEST J BOOG REGGAE SENSATION COMES TO MONTBLEU CASINO RESORT

Tickets are just $20.00 in advance, or $25.00 at the door and available at all Ticketmaster outlets, and at the MontBleu Box Office, or online at www.ticketmaster.com You can also purchase by phone by calling MontBleu Resort, 775-588-3515.

Jacob Hemphill (lead vocals & guitar) met Bobby Lee (bass) in the first grade in Virginia, shortly after Jacob returned from living in Africa with his family. The two instantly became best friends, and in middle school found a common love for hip hop, rock and reggae music. Throughout middle and high school, they met Ryan Berty (drums), Patrick O’Shea (keyboards) and Kenneth Brownell (percussion). Together they formed SOJA. In the formative years the band gigged locally in the DC area while a couple of the guys finished school. All the while making plans to hit the road after graduation…

In 2005 the band hit the road… and they hit the road hard. Often dubbed “road warriors”, SOJA has brought their unique sound and stage show to nearly every city in North America, as well as many cities throughout Europe, South America, the Pacific Islands and the Caribbean. While touring in Puerto Rico the band linked up with sax player Hellman Escorcia & trumpet player Rafael Rodriguez.  These two exceptional musicians earned their position as SOJA’s mainstay horn section by helping further develop the band’s eclectic sound.

With no signs of slowing down - SOJA is planning a world tour for 2011/2012 in support of their upcoming album release. It’s all about the message in the music for this band. “People think we write music about the earth for the earth’s sake, but its not really like that.  If we harm the earth, it will reject us.  For all we know, its happened one hundred times before. This place gets too hot, that’s it.  Reset button. That’s why I sing what I sing - to pull us all in the same direction, the same future. Without that, were finished (Jacob Hemphill).”

There is no doubt about it. This band is on the forefront of a Revolution with hopes to bring about positive change: environmentally, politically and socially. “Maybe we need to WANT to fix it. Maybe stop talking, maybe start listening. Maybe we need to look at this world less like a square and more like a circle. Maybe just maybe God’s not unfair, maybe we’re all his kids and he’s up there.  Maybe he loves us for all our races, maybe he hates us when we’re all so racist.  Maybe he sees us, when we dont care, that its heaven right here, but its hell over there. Then maybe the meek will inherit this earth, cause it was written before… so…” Everything Changes - SOJA.

On tour with SOJA is J Boog (Born Jerry Afemata) is a singer born in Long Beach and raised in Compton, CA. Growing up in a large family, he was always surrounded by a lot of people and music. J's father is the chief of the family village in Aloa, Samoa. Boog was raised with a strong sense of that tradition and culture and he proudly carries it with him today and always. J met his favorite artist, George “Fiji” Veikoso in 2005 and began to work with him on music. . In 2006, J moved to Hawaii to continue developing his craft. J Boog released his debut album 'Hear Me Roar' in 2007. In 2008 J Boog joined a Wash House Music Inc, based in Hawaii and San Francisco.

Tickets are just $20 in advance, or $25 at the door, and available at all Ticketmaster outlets, and at the MontBleu Box Office, or online at www.ticketmaster.com You can also purchase by phone by calling MontBleu Resort, 775-588-3515.

SIERRA NEVADA WORLD MUSIC FESTIVAL ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: DUANE STEPHENSON AND THE EXPANDERS

Duane Stephenson

From Kingston, Jamaica's August Town, Duane Stephenson has a gift that extends beyond his role as a reggae singer. His work exhibits the versatility of many of music's greatest artists in the pop realm; mixing lyrics that address social ills, romance and global issues with unique phrasing, potent hooks and melodic changes – all delivered in an extremely nimble tenor that wakes the soul.   The artist's debut album,  FROM AUGUST TOWN  produced by reggae maestro and saxophonist Dean Fraser was heralded by Billboard magazine as one of six albums, "collectively galvanizing a roots reggae revival" with "lyrics that convey romantic longings and the anguish of ghetto realities with equal conviction."

A recent collaboration is an uptempo, inspiring ballad, “Better Tomorrow”  that features a soothing melody, soaring chord changes and lush vocal arrangements  echoing African song structure.  An accompanying video is directed by Ras Kassa the Guru. The illustrative lyrical storytelling of Duane Stephenson provides fertile ground for Ras Kassa's forward-thinking, unique directorial style. Watch Better Tomorrow Video here:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76Ncfy_UKjI

Duane Stephenson got his start in the music industry as part of  the group To Isis, getting the attention of Dean Fraser, and then began writing songs for other artists including Tarrus Riley, Luciano and Jah Cure, whose song "True Reflections" was written by Stephenson.  The artist makes his first appearance at this year's Sierra Nevada World Music Festival.

The Expanders

The Expanders began playing reggae music together in the summer of 2003, and today are one of the hardest working reggae bands in Southern California. They have come to be known for their vintage “rockers” style of reggae, played in the tradition of classic 1970′s Jamaican groups.  Their music is centered in three-part vocal harmonies and strong song writing, with lyrics that range from socially heavy, to playful and upbeat, to personal.

The songs on the self-titled THE EXPANDERS album were recorded between 2006 and 2010.  The band took the time to develop this recording with the goal that the music have an authentic vintage Jamaican sound. So, as time permitted during the busy schedules of all involved, the songs were composed and performed and recorded live in a few takes in the vintage Jamaican tradition with few overdubs.  Recently members of the band recorded acoustic versions of select songs from the record live in the Broken Complex studios. Watch is the original Race is Run from those sessions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9zkPNgElgo

In addition to performing their own original material and rare Jamaican scorchers, The Expanders have backed several vintage artists  at Sierra Nevada.  This year they will back The Cables in addition to performing their own Expanders band set for the first time at SNWMF.   Past Sierra Nevada World Music Festival performances were praised in The Beat magazine for recreating “the old classic Kingston rocksteady sound to a T.”

We are delighted to have Duane Stephenson and The Expanders make their first appearances at the 18th Annual Sierra Nevada World Music Festival.  We have added three more artists to round out the Sierra Nevada lineup, they are: Thomas Mapfumo, Mambo This and Jesus Diaz Y Su QBA.

ROCKY DAWUNI NOMINATED FOR WORLD MUSIC AWARDS

Ghana’s international music star Rocky Dawuni has been nominated by the International Reggae and World Music Awards for Best Album and Best African Entertainer, to be held in Trinidad on May 28.

The Ghanaian Reggae Legend who has been referred by many as Africa’s Bob Marley leveraged his popularity within and without of the Continent to champion social causes and inspire a generation of artists and fans alike.

It therefore came as no surprise when under the auspices of UNICEF, the Ghanaian reggae artist Rocky Dawuni joined the head of the European Commission delegation, Filiberto Ceriani Sebregondi, and UNICEF Representative Dr. Yasmin Ali Haque on a two-day visit to northern Ghana to help educate the public on Guinea Worm the past few years.

Over the last few years, Rocky’s music and electric live performances have attracted thousands to his concerts. Superstars such as Stevie Wonder and Peter Gabriel have joined him on stage at his shows to tremendous response.

WILD HARE: A CHICAGO REGGAE LANDMARK PREPARES TO CLOSE

Ethiopian owner-musician Zeleke Gessesse will close his club and prepare to open a new one in his homeland.

Late last Friday night, Chicagoans were streaming into the Wild Hare, a landmark reggae club in Wrigleyville.

As the band Flex Crew played its buoyant music, young men and women swayed freely on the dance floor to a joyous beat, the palpable optimism of the sounds inspiring smiles all around.

But the fun-loving scene at the Wild Hare – which has been presenting reggae on North Clark Street for 25 years – will end May 15. That's when Ethiopian owner-musician Zeleke Gessesse will close his widely admired club and prepare to open a new one in his homeland.

In essence, a major chapter in Gessesse's life – and in reggae music in Chicago – will come to a close.

"We came to Chicago as political refugees from Ethiopia – it was a tough time and there was civil war," says Gessesse, remembering the arduous journey he, a brother and a bandmate endured to get here in 1978 (including several days of trekking through the African desert).

But ('Family Time') was a really good project for me, and necessary at the time."

JUNIOR REID : : ONE BLOOD
The former lead singer of Black Uhuru, with chart topping hits including the monster hits One Blood and This is Why I’m Hot (remix), Junior “One Blood” Reid is a worldwide Reggae/Dancehall Legend, universally loved and respected by fellow artists and fans.

Reid has a new album – Living Legend – which has been completed and is soon to be released. Living Legend features appearances by hot current hip-hop artists such as Snoop Dogg, Lil Wayn, Cool and Dre and Swiss Beat, and the reggae artists Capleton and Andrew and Wada Blood, Reid’s sons.

In 1989, Reid left Black Uhuru and released the One Blood album, whose title track became a worldwide anthem. Reid’s longevity has a lot to do with the timelessness of the song One Blood. This song’s universal message is similar that of Bob Marley’s One Love. The One Blood remix with Game crossed over to hip-hop and urban audiences, leading to a string of hip-hop/ reggae collaborations with the likes of Poor Righteous Teachers, Busta Rhymes, Wu-Tang Clan, Guru’s Jazzmataz, Alicia Keys, Lil Wayne, Cool and Dre and Snoop Dogg.

Reid’s video release, The Real O.G. (Jordan Tower Films), was released online on www.worldstarhiphop.com in October 2009 and in the first week he received over eight million views. The Real O.G. song itself was produced by Blackout Movements and JR Records.

DON MINOTT : : SPEAK FOR THE POOR
"This song was written by me because I needed to express my frustrations over the social conditions of working class people ,especially people from the inner cities. Society loves to about equal rights and justice , but it seems like it does apply to the poor." -Don Minott
SINGIN GOLD IS. SYMBIZ SOUND : : MARCHIN' ON
The morbid future scenarios in films such as The Terminator, Mad Max or The Matrix are well-known to the most of us. And regardless of whether our future truly does look as bleak as Hollywood will have us believe or whether we in fact have a rather bright and shining future ahead of us, the main question remains, *which music will be accompanying this future?* While it is likely that in the mainstream the show business will be taken over by holograms and robots, from underground clubs and big independent festivals we will continue to hear the sweet sound of bass music made with love. *Now is the Time for Future Dancehall Today was Yesterday!*

CHROMATICS:LEADR OF THE OPPOSITION
Chromatics was born Richard Raj-Kumar on the 18th August, 1982 in the island of Trinidad.  Trinidad is known as the land of Carnival and Soca Music, Chromatics however felt more at home with the Hip Hop element.  Chromatics grew up with Heltah Skeltah, Jay-Z, Biggie Smalls and Rakim and with his cousins’ encouragement he began to write hip hop songs when he was twelve years old.  This led Chromatics down a long and arduous road that would mould his character and test his resolve.

Chromatics joined up with “Spotrushaz”, at the time a young and developing group of rappers, and began to really consider making music his career.  “Spotrushaz” quickly transformed into the most recognizable Hip Hop act in the country and they were constantly working.  The group released a flurry of singles (and videos) and radio stations took note.  “Triniman”, “True Soldierz”, “Mary Warner”, “Put the Chips Up”, “Blow” and more recently “Iron” cemented the group’s name and allowed the group to perform alongside some of the world’s biggest hit makers.  They opened for the likes of Ms. Jade, Sean Paul, Slick Rick, Dougie Fresh, Shannon, Lloyd E Stef, Bounty Killer and Elephant Man.

Check Chromatics out at www.myspace.com/chromatics1 and be your own judge.
