REGGAE REPORT ARCHIVE PROJECT LAUNCHES May 11, THE 30th ANNIVERSARY OF BOB MARLEY'S PASSING
Reggae Report founder M. Peggy Quattro celebrates her 30th anniversary in Reggae on May 11 with the launching of the Reggae Report Archive project on Kickstarter, the best “crowdfunded” project-pledging platform in the world!

Miami, FL – May 7, 2011  - Reggae Report, the award-winning reggae magazine, is launching a pledge campaign on Kickstarter.com to raise funds for the creation of its online Archive.  Reggae Report publisher M. Peggy Quattro celebrates her 30 years by announcing the Kickstarter project.  “Reggae Report is an important and valuable part of Reggae history,” says Quattro, “and Kickstarter is the perfect creative arts platform to make this Archive a reality.”

For those who pledge financial support, Quattro offers a range of incredible rewards!  Backers can choose from a Founding Member Certificate, vintage t-shirts and posters, CDs or DVDs, exclusive Bob Marley art, VIP access to Bayside Rocks! 2011, or an action-packed Kingston trip for two with MPeggyQ for an inside look at Reggae’s roots they will never forget!  Many of these rewards are limited and exclusive to Reggae Report’s 30-year collection, and everyone who pledges support will be listed as a Founding Member on the Archive website.

Before the Internet, Reggae Report was the world’s #1 link to its favorite stars.  The Reggae Report Archive will host hundreds of magazines containing interviews, articles, and historical retrospectives, as well as Quattro’s own personal stories.  Amazing images will include photos recounting her extensive travels.  “Reggae Report has long been acknowledged for its excellent quality…enabling it to become a reliable source for chronicling reggae’s history.” – The Jamaica Gleaner 1993.

On May 11, 1981, Quattro began working with Don Taylor, Bob Marley’s manager—on the morning Bob went home to Zion. To observe this important date, she chose May 11 to launch the Reggae Report Archive project on Kickstarter.  From 1983 to 1998, Quattro led Reggae Report to international recognition, distribution, and respect.  In 1999, the print magazine evolved into ReggaeReport.com, and Reggae Report’s presence is throughout social media today.

“Reggae Report…is among the most venerable of [those] journals...an important source of information.” – Elena Oumano, Billboard 1997.

The Reggae Report Archive is a valuable and relevant source of Reggae history, and the creation of the Archive project is the persistent publisher’s primary goal.

If you'd like more information about the Kickstarter Archive Project, or to schedule an interview with M. Peggy Quattro, please call 305-491-4884 or e-mail reggaereport@gmail.com

STEPHEN MARLEY PREPS TWO-PART ALBUM
Reggae singer/songwriter/producer Stephen Marley, son of legendary reggae artist Bob Marley, is currently in the studio crafting a two-part album series that will likely feature a strong infusion of hip hop.

Stephen’s third studio album, Revelation Pt 1: The Root of Life, which is set for release in the spring, will feature 14 eclectic tracks that will serve as a backdrop to his conscious message. The sequel, Revelation Pt 2: The Fruit of Life, is slated to hit stores in the fall and will offer a more universal sound.

“Reggae music has influenced hip hop and so many other kinds of music,” Stephen Marley said.  “The Fruit of Life will be [a] more open, eclectic kind of record. There will be songs for the club, dancehall reggae will be there, love songs in there, but it will remain conscious, good music that you can always take something positive from.”

Stephen has worked closely with his brother Damian Marley over the years, producing the majority of the tracks on Damian’s three solo albums, most notably 2005’s Grammy-winning Welcome to Jamrock. Stephen also produced three tracks on Damian’s 2010 compilation album with Nas, Distant Relatives.

The Miami-based star has also put in studio time with The Fugees, Eve, Dead Prez, Nelly and Mr. Cheeks.

Revelation Pt 1: The Root of Life hits store shelves May 24.

SIERRA NEVADA WORLD MUSIC FESTIVAL ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: DUANE STEPHENSON AND THE EXPANDERS

Duane Stephenson

From Kingston, Jamaica's August Town, Duane Stephenson has a gift that extends beyond his role as a reggae singer. His work exhibits the versatility of many of music's greatest artists in the pop realm; mixing lyrics that address social ills, romance and global issues with unique phrasing, potent hooks and melodic changes – all delivered in an extremely nimble tenor that wakes the soul.   The artist's debut album,  FROM AUGUST TOWN  produced by reggae maestro and saxophonist Dean Fraser was heralded by Billboard magazine as one of six albums, "collectively galvanizing a roots reggae revival" with "lyrics that convey romantic longings and the anguish of ghetto realities with equal conviction."

A recent collaboration is an uptempo, inspiring ballad, “Better Tomorrow”  that features a soothing melody, soaring chord changes and lush vocal arrangements  echoing African song structure.  An accompanying video is directed by Ras Kassa the Guru. The illustrative lyrical storytelling of Duane Stephenson provides fertile ground for Ras Kassa's forward-thinking, unique directorial style. Watch Better Tomorrow Video here:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76Ncfy_UKjI

Duane Stephenson got his start in the music industry as part of  the group To Isis, getting the attention of Dean Fraser, and then began writing songs for other artists including Tarrus Riley, Luciano and Jah Cure, whose song "True Reflections" was written by Stephenson.  The artist makes his first appearance at this year's Sierra Nevada World Music Festival.

The Expanders

The Expanders began playing reggae music together in the summer of 2003, and today are one of the hardest working reggae bands in Southern California. They have come to be known for their vintage “rockers” style of reggae, played in the tradition of classic 1970′s Jamaican groups.  Their music is centered in three-part vocal harmonies and strong song writing, with lyrics that range from socially heavy, to playful and upbeat, to personal.

The songs on the self-titled THE EXPANDERS album were recorded between 2006 and 2010.  The band took the time to develop this recording with the goal that the music have an authentic vintage Jamaican sound. So, as time permitted during the busy schedules of all involved, the songs were composed and performed and recorded live in a few takes in the vintage Jamaican tradition with few overdubs.  Recently members of the band recorded acoustic versions of select songs from the record live in the Broken Complex studios. Watch is the original Race is Run from those sessions: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9zkPNgElgo

In addition to performing their own original material and rare Jamaican scorchers, The Expanders have backed several vintage artists  at Sierra Nevada.  This year they will back The Cables in addition to performing their own Expanders band set for the first time at SNWMF.   Past Sierra Nevada World Music Festival performances were praised in The Beat magazine for recreating “the old classic Kingston rocksteady sound to a T.”

We are delighted to have Duane Stephenson and The Expanders make their first appearances at the 18th Annual Sierra Nevada World Music Festival.  We have added three more artists to round out the Sierra Nevada lineup, they are: Thomas Mapfumo, Mambo This and Jesus Diaz Y Su QBA.

WADI GAD IN DETENTION CENTER
Editors note: if everyone reading this send $1, we could raise funds asap. Call Justine below to find out how to contribute.

Dear Friend of Wadi Gad,

I am writing on his behalf to make a special plea for help.  Wadi's legal bills are now in a critical stage.  In order for his case to proceed, the attorney will need to receive $2,500.  The current status is that his case will be reopened in New York where it originates.  In order for the re-filing to take place, the attorney needs to receive funds to help cover costs which have been discounted significantly as it stands.

Wadi's wish is for funds to be directed to the mother of one of his children, Malika Madremana.  If you are interested in making a contribution in the form of a gift, please let me know and I will provide mailing information for Malika.

There have been two successful fundraisers that were organized in LA and in the Bay Area. These funds were raised to to be directed towards Wadi's legal costs.

If you have  further questions or would like to write to Wadi or send money to him directly at the detention center in Arizona for his daily needs, please contact me.  I can be reached at (323)251-0542.

Please share this email with those that you think may be able to help. It is preferred that it is not published to the greater public in the form of a blog post or news item. If we are able to raise the necessary funds privately, or get close to this amount, we can open up to the greater public to help further the effort and let people know of our success story.  Wadi is very grateful to the many people that have written to him since he has been detained and he is keeping strong with Rasta study group meetings and meditation.

If just 25 of us give $100 each we will have met our goal.

Thanks and blessings,

Justine Ketola

6TH ANNUAL BAYFRONT REGGAE & WORLD MUSIC FESTIVAL

CHEF MAYRA POBLANO SPINACH PASTA

12 organic Ounces Rigatoni, Spiral Pasta or Bow Ties or whatever you like
1 10-ounce package frozen spinach, cooked according to directions, omitting seasoning, drained and pressed 2 Poblano Peppers, roasted, peeled and seeded
on a skillet or under the broiler, peeled, deveined and seeded 2 Tablespoons Olive Oil
1/4 Cup Grated VEGAN Parmesan Cheese
2 Carrots, peeled and cut into medium sized slivers
1/2 Cup Green Peas
1 Small Handful Lemon Thyme-basil- Tarragon
3 garlic cloves, peeled
1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons cashews
3/4 cup vegetable broth
1/3 cup olive oil
1 1/2 teaspoons coarse ( kosher) salt
A shake white pepper

The How to:
Roast pepper over an open flame such as a grill or gas stove (lay it on an electric burner as a last resort), let the skin get completely black, allow it to cool, then remove the skin with the tip of a knife. Placing the roasted peppers in a clean paper bag will help in removing the skin. Use a paper towel to dab off pieces of burned skin. Washing it off will also remove the charred flavor, if you like. Combine peppers, olive oil , cashews, fresh herbs, garlic and vegan cheese in food processor or blender and process until smooth. Add salt and pepper plus around half of the veg*broth. Pulse to combine, using a spatula to scrape down the sides, adding more veg* broth as needed until the mixture is roughly blended together. Slowly stream in olive oil and continue to pulse/blend until the pesto is cohesive. Taste for seasonings and adjust accordingly. Cook pasta according to package directions. While pasta is cooking, cook carrots on stove top until slightly soft, add peas and heat until warm. Remove thyme leaves from stems by holding the top of a sprig and stripping the leaves downward. Drain cooked pasta, toss with the vegetables and thyme leaves, then gently coat with the Poblano sauce. "V" Chef Mayra

VALUING THE MOMENT
"... the only time you ever have in which to learn anything or see anything or feel anything, or express any feeling or emotion, or respond to an event, or grow, or heal, is this moment, because this is the only moment any of us ever gets. You’re only here now; you’re only alive in this moment."
