IMPORTANT PROGRAM ON TOXIC POLLUTION CRISIS COMING MAY 26 AT RIVERS COALITION PUBLIC MEETING
River advocates have an extraordinary opportunity to learn the latest (and scary) info on toxic levels of pollutants that besiege our St. Lucie estuary and the entire Everglades eco-system. Don't miss it.

One of the state's strongest spokespersons against excessive nutrient pollution, will give us the lowdown and field questions at the Rivers Coalition meeting at 11 a.m. May 26 at Stuart City Hall. She is Cris Costello, veteran communicator with the Florida Sierra Club.

The future of the St. Lucie depends heavily on whether we stem the flow of poisionous pollutants, especially in wet times. Conservationists warn that government policies continue to pamper the "pollution establishment" that allows degrading levels of phosphorous, nitrogen, mercury and other pathogens.

Costello will explain what a number of communities, including Martin, have done to limit some homeowner uses of phosporous/nitrogen fertilizers. But many say that little has been done to stop damages from agricultural runoffs.

To read background on the toxic nutrient problem, go to RiversCoaltion.org and click on The Phosphorous Bomb on the website's front page.

The May 26 meeting is open to the public at no charge and there's plenty of free parking. Even coffee and donuts await you.
