LETTER WRITING CAMPAIGN IN SUPPORT OF BUJU BANTON
I am writing to ask for your intervention in the form of a letter of support, for Grammy-winning reggae artist Buju Banton (legal name Mark Anthony Myrie) who is presently incarcerated as a result of entrapment.

This sad episode began on July 25,2009.  Mr. Myrie, having just completed a successful tour of Europe was on a return flight from Spain to the U.S.A where he was next scheduled to perform. Mr. Myrie unknowingly was seated next to Alexander Johnson an informant for the Federal government who engaged Buju in conversation and subsequently pursued Mr. Myrie for six months. Mr Myrie finally agreed to meet him to view a boat in December.  Mr Myrie was not shown a boat but rather a “surprise flash” of cocaine in an undercover DEA warehouse on Dec 8, 2010.  Mr Myrie who was traveling with his driver Ian Thomas, returned home and did not take any further calls from Alexander Johnson.

Two days later, Ian Thomas and James Mack (the latter Mr. Myrie has never met nor communicated with) subsequently brought monies to Alexander Johnson to pay for drugs at  the same warehouse in Sarasota Florida on December 10, 2009. They were arrested engaging in a drug deal which Mr Myrie had no part in. Yet Mr. Myrie was arrested at his home in Fort Lauderdale on December 10, 2009.  Ian Thomas and James Mack  have both entered plea bargains while Mr. Myrie has consistently maintained his innocence.

During the trial it was revealed that the informant in Mr. Myrie’s case is a convicted drug trafficker from Colombia. This convicted felon has been granted legal immigration status in the U.S and has earned over $3.3 million American dollars (tax-free) for serving as an informant to various U.S. government agencies. Despite his earnings, Mr. Johnson testified that he does not pay taxes, does not pay his credit card bills and has declared bankruptcy.  Mark Anthony Myrie has no previous criminal record and pays his taxes both in the US and Jamaica.

Mark Myrie spent over a year in jail waiting for his trial.  His first trial was held at Sam Gibsons Court House  in Tampa Florida on  September 20, 2010. On September 28 the Jury returned with a "hung jury" verdict. After that trial Mr. Myrie was still incarcerated without bail, although he met all the criteria for bail.

In October 2010 he was given a steep criteria for bond of USD $300,000 in the form of equity,  24 hour security  survellance that cost him USD $20,000 month. He also had to wear a monitoring device on his leg at all times.  Mr. Myrie was able to meet the bail criteria on November 8, 2010 thanks to his good friend Stephen Marley,  the son of reggae legend Bob Marley, who put his home up for bond.

The second trial was held on February 14, 2011, one day after Mark Myrie aka Buju Banton won his first Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album. This time however, Prosecutor James Preston added two more charges against Mr. Myrie. Those were attempted possession with the intent to distribute cocaine and using the wires to facilitate a drug-trafficking offense. On February 22 the Jury returned with 3 guilty verdicts against Mr. Myrie.   The musician was found guilty of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute five or more kilogrammes of cocaine, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug-trafficking offence (despite the fact that he was not at the scene of the crime, does not own a firearm and never knew James Mack who actually possessed the firearm in question) and using the wires to facilitate a drug-trafficking offense. Mark Myrie was found not guilty of attempted possession with the intent to distribute cocaine.

During both trials the lead investigator on the case, Sargeant Dan McCaffrey of the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) stated that there was no evidence that the reggae artiste, Buju Banton (real name Mark Myrie) was a drug trafficker.  Their 13 month investigation yielded nothing.

In fact, at the end of Seageant Dan McCaffrey's cross-examination from defense lawyer David Oscar Markus, it was revealed that Buju Banton did not finance nor benefit from the drug deal that he was charged with being a part of.  In addition, Seageant McCaffrey said that there was no evidence of any connection between Buju Banton and Ike and Tyke, whom it was revealed in court were the actual drug dealers. Despite that fact, they have still not been arrested. The DEA agent further agreed that Ike and Tyke were the buyers of the drugs for which Banton was arrested.

Present use of highly paid informants who create criminal activity to earn their paycheck has unfortunately become the order of the day, Buju's case is sadly not an anomaly but the norm.   Mr Alexander Johnson has earned $50,000 from this case alone ($35,000 from the DEA, $15,000 from the Sarasota police) and continues to do similar work, while Buju languishes in jail.  There is certainly two different systems of justice operating in this nation, wherein informants are used for chiefly drug cases (mostly charging people of color), while white collar crimes (i.e. financial fraud) are dropped all too often for so called "lack of evidence."

Mr. Myrie, a.k.a. Buju Banton, produces uplifting, positive music comparable to the music of Hon. Bob Marley.  His work inspires people around the globe.  There has been an unyielding support for the artist on the internet by his fans worldwide. He is religious & has traveled to the holy land to attend prayers in Golgotha Ethiopian Monastery, Jerusalem.

Mark Myrie is one of the leading voices of his generation.  His music sheds light on such issues as the unrelenting violence and abject poverty pervasive in the Third World. Born on July 15, 1973,the 37 year old reggae artiste is the youngest of fifteen children. Mr. Myrie's family is directly descended from the Maroons, a group of formerly enslaved Africans who became freedom fighters, fighting the British for centuries and obtaining a treaty with the British, giving them semi-autonomy in Jamaica. Buju Banton (Mark Myrie) is one of the most popular musicians in Jamaican history.

Buju Banton (Mark Myrie) has also represented his country in performances at the Summer Olympics in Greece in 2004 and at the Cricket World Cup Opening Ceremony in 2007.  Buju Banton also commemorated Jamaica’s support for President Obama by appearing in rock legend Dave Stewart’s music video for “American Prayer,” a moving tribute to the President.  Additionally, Buju is a family man, an employer and a generous philanthropist. He founded "Free Willy" an organization based in his homeland, Jamaica to provide for the needs of children infected with HIV/AIDS.

Given Buju Banton’s exemplary reputation, his humanitarian efforts and his cultural contributions to society, we should all reach out to  Judge James Moody upon whom Buju Banton (Mark Myrie) fate now lies and earnestly request that he grants that the guilty verdicts be overturned, retrial and bond.

Higher Purse has been in the studio for the last few months compiling tracks for his debut album, which is still untitled.

The reggae singer who is steady developing a loyal fan base thinks that it is important for him to position himself to take his career to the next level, and releasing a full-length album will do just that. The album will feature productions from Red Boom of Hard At Work Music, Antonie McLean of Legendary Productions, Omar Benjamin of Frenz For Real Music and Buff who is the producer of Russcuttaz Music, Higher Purse’s own record company. Higher Purse is also working on getting collaborations with Karamanti, Natural Black and a few other artists, which he hopes to include on the album.

In addition to the popular single, “rub-a-dub”, Higher Purse has also recently released “bitter sweet love remix” and “tell me” as leading singles to the album. Below are links to listen to both tracks and disc jockeys are welcome to request their free copies.

An official release date for the album has not yet been determined but he hopes to have everything ready by late summer, acknowledging that it could be delayed until the fall.

As for the Poor Man Riddim, Russcuttaz Music’s follow up to the Old School Riddim, Higher Purse contends that this project will still be released some time in the summer.

INNER CIRCLE AND JULIAN MARLEY TO PERFORM AT MARTIN MEMORIAL LIFESAVERS GOOMBAY BASH

FLORIDA — The Martin Memorial LifeSavers, a committee of community members who organize the annual Goombay Bash, will celebrate its 10th anniversary with an event that is bigger than ever, with internationally renowned reggae artists joining the party.

Themed after the hit television series “Lost,” the 2011 Goombay Bash will take place on Saturday, July 16 from 7 to 11 p.m. in a 12,000-square-foot hangar at Fair Wind Air Charter located at 2525 S.E. Witham Field in Stuart.

Organizers are planning elaborate set designs to recreate a lush tropical rainforest and makeshift structures similar to those constructed for shelter by the TV show’s castaway characters after they crash landed on a remote island.

Featured entertainment includes reggae artists Inner Circle (performers of the hit song “Bad Boys” from the television show “COPS”) and Julian Marley, son of legendary reggae artist Bob Marley.

Tickets are $100 and can be purchased by visiting the Martin Memorial Foundation’s website at GIVEmmhs.org/Goombay, or by calling (772) 223-5634.

“The Goombay Bash has grown tremendously through the years, in part because it is an incredible event, but also because of the cause it supports,” said Lindsay Nickerson, who co-chairs the 2011 event with Melinda Stevens-Brault. “We are helping to provide a new generation with a healthy start by raising funds that assist Martin Memorial in delivering exceptional care to Treasure Coast children and their families.”

For 10 years, Goombay Bash has put a fun and festive face on that cause. Last year’s event drew 650 attendees and raised $130,000 to help outfit the hospital’s maternal-child department with technology and equipment designed for infant and pediatric care. The fundraiser also supports total family health and wellness programs, educational outreaches and home visits for new parents and parents-to-be.

Martin Memorial Health Systems is a not-for-profit, community-based health care organization that has served the region for more than 70 years. It offers a continuum of care including preventative, primary and acute hospital care, as well as cancer and cardiac care, wellness and rehabilitation services. Its approximately 2,900 Associates, 375 affiliated physicians and 900 volunteers provide care at 12 different locations serving Martin and St. Lucie counties. Martin Memorial is a six-time winner of the Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals Award, was named a Thomson Reuters 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals award winner in 2010, and received designation as a National Employer of Choice designee for 2009 and 2010-11. THE UPRISING ROOTS : : SKYFIYA
Skyfiya is another stand out track. You may be expecting more when the ride begins simply because “Rise up this morning. Hail the Uprising. Great Fiyah, Skyfiya” is the extent of the lyrics, save for a 15 word speech uttered towards the end of the song. But, it’s one of those tunes that you feel. The bass is again prominent accompanied by some very well placed horn arrangements and a wicked sax solo. The intro and outro smacks of the Peter Tosh classic Bukk-In-Hamm-Palace.

Release date March 14, 2011

Album available on itunes, amazon.com and all other download platforms

ON THIS DAY IN REGGAE
1962:  Island Records, established a few weeks ago to distribute Caribbean records to Britain's West Indian community, releases its first single, "Twist Baby" by Owen Gray.
1974:  First issue of HIGH TIMES goes on sale.
1977:  Bob Marley & The Wailers' Exodus tour 1977 Europe / Rainbow Theatre, Finsbury Park, London, U.K. (the first night of four consecutive nights)
1999:  An original Wailer, Junior Braithwaite aka Junior Wailers is shot and killed in a Kingston home by armed men. He was 50. (b. April 4, 1949)
Braithwaite died around 6:45 p.m. of a single gunshot wound to the head. Gunmen attacked Braithwaite and his friend, Laurence Scott, at Scott's house on Rosend Avenue in Kingston. Scott was killed, too. Sources say Scott was the target of the gunmen and that Braithwaite "was in the wrong place at the wrong time."

VALUE JUST BEING
"To do great work a man must be very idle as well as very industrious."
-- Samuel Butler
