GREETINGS AND WELCOME TO THE FIRST ISSUE OF GRASSROOTS – THE MEDICINAL MARIJUANA MOVEMENT DIGITAL MAGAZINE.

There is a lot of information on the subject of marijuana these days and moreover, it’s  changing every day. That’s why we created this magazine – it’s beyond bongs and blondes at this point (God bless ‘em).

Marijuana is now a whole new ball game. More sophisticated
minds want to be kept apprised of the evolving status of the
plant in terms of medicine, politics and business, and culturally, in the kitchen and on the streets.

We are in the midst of a paradigm shift and the polarized
debate over this plant will likely become a relic of the past.
GrassRoots, as an observer of history unfolding, captures the  best of what these times have to offer: stories by pioneers  in the cannabis movement, the latest research by scientists,  legal and medical Q&A columns, tips on cultivating your own  medicine, market observations, as well as theory and even  comedy. Our contributors include doctors, yogis, lawyers,  connoisseurs, and farmers as we are geared toward all those  readers interested in and aware of the enormous changes  that are underfoot.

You’re part of the cutting edge! May these pages stimulate
your conversations and help create a new framework for a
better world.

ABYSINNIANS AND YOGA AT MYSTIC GARDEN - GATHERING OF THE TRIBES IN SOUTHERN OREGON
The 5th Annual "MYSTIC GARDEN GATHERING OF THE TRIBES" is a 5 Day Event on 25 acres in beautiful Southern Oregon at Lake Selmac.  Theme Camps, Music, Visionary Art, Workshops, Yoga Camp and "A Day Out of Time” Webcast highlight this extraordinary event.  Musical artists “The Abyssinians, Charles Neville with Youssoupha Sidibe, Chris Berry, Fanna Fi-Allah” and many more grace the stage!  Speakers Joe Marshala, Samantha Sweetwater, Swami Beyondananda and many local luminaries ad to the Mystic-mix!

Organizers have made “The Mystic Garden Gathering” an affordable event for all with 3-day camping passes starting at $100 and 5 day camping passes at $130.  Day passes available at the gate.
Tickets online at:  www.mysticgardengathering.eventbrite.com

Emerging out of the former “Mystic Garden Party” is the “Gathering.” A dozen visionary event organizers are onboard in support of this new “Mystic Garden Gathering of the Tribes.” Our mission is to showcase consciousness leaders of our larger community and offer an experience of  “evolutionary culture” in action at the theme camps.  Music and celebration till midnight on main stage and all night at the Casbah keep the vibes high.  This is a no alcohol event but one that supports “Creating Community and A Healthier Future for All.”

In this age of mass entertainment and disconnectedness,  Mystic organizers see a need for individuals to have a community building experience.  The theme camps are “edutainment”: both entertaining and educational!  As we shift from over-stimulating to inner-stimulating we create balance in ourselves and our community.  The camps feature cutting edge teachers of yoga, meditation, ecstatic dance, visionary art, sound healing, indigenous wisdom, ceremony, raw foods, healing arts, women’s empowerment, singing, druming, sufi dancing and children’s creative play.  This is an educational and engaging experience, infusing a pop culture with life-affirming information in a fun and creative fashion.

3 or 5 day camping passes are available to those who would like to immerse themselves in this evolutionary culture event.  Lake Selmac in Selma, Oregon is a popular vacation destination for many seeking relaxation and rejuvenation.  The 25 acre location provides shaded camping and sunny swimming sites.  Hot water showers are available to campers.  This in conjunction with all day events and music create the atmosphere of a village with many choices ranging from quiet walks to ecstatic dance.

High vibe music has always been a corner stone for all of the Mystic events and “The Gathering” will showcase musicians from many styles and locations.  Artists from around the world and locally bless the stage with uplifting and inspiring rhyme and sound.

World roots harmony vocals trio ”The Abyssinians” headline on main stage for “The Gathering”  The Abyssinians Band was formed in 1968 by founding members Donald Manning, Bernard Collins and Linford Manning. It was in 1969 with their release “Satta Massagana , a Rastafarian hymn based on the Ethiopian Amharic language, that launched them into the ranks of Reggae music greats. “Satta Massagana” became one of reggae’s most popular songs; becoming an anthem that was heard on the radios, in the dancehalls and in the churches of Jamaica.

Musical genius Chris Berry, a widely celebrated Mbira player, singer, percussionist, and songwriter, has sold over 1 million albums in Africa. Since his return to the United States, he has been playing main stage at some of the biggest festivals in the country, and collaborating with some of the most recognized musicians in many different genre’s from all over the world.

Music first touched the Grammy award winning Chris Berry as a teen living in the heart of Zimbabwe where he carefully learned the indigenous rhythms of Africa on the sacred Mbira   His ability to speak out against the tyranny of the Zimbabwean regime through the art of music won him overnight success across the country and in the World Music market, bringing his music around the globe.  The “Afro-pop Superstar” is  a multi-instrumentalist with grace on Mbira, the hand drum, as well as a gifted singer-songwriter whose voice is often compared to Sting.

Headliner Charles Neville’s experience on saxophone has included him in rhythm & blues, funk, jazz, be-bop, popular and even American Indian music. Always exposed to music in the Neville household, Charles started playing saxophone before he reached his teens. Charles, Art, Aaron and Cyril of the "Neville Brothers"  joined in New Orleans with their uncle Big Chief Jolly. There they recorded "Mardi Gras Indian Songs."   "The Wild Tchoupitoulas" band emerged with all brothers working together for the first time.  He also recorded and played with the American Indian group called Songcatchers. He formed his own group called Diversity, which features a mixture of jazz and classical musicians.  He will headline for "The Gathering" with Youssoupha Sidibe, a Grammy nominated Senegalese West African Kora (african harp) player.

UB40 FOR UB40! REGGAE STARS WHO SOLD 70m RECORDS OVER 28 YEARS FACE BANKRUPTCY PROCEEDINGS

Reggae superstars UB40 are facing bankruptcy proceedings after a judge at Birmingham County Court gave the green light for liquidators to pursue the case.

A spokesperson for the five original members of the 80s band said they would fight the decision made by District Judge Richard Musgrave, after he gave tax officials permission to issue bankruptcy proceedings against them.

The men are facing claims involving royalty payments on the band's hits including Red Red Wine which date back more than 30 years.

Tax officials have been scrutinising debts run up by Dep International, the record label set up by UB40 in 1980 which was wound up four years ago.

The hearing related to band members Robin Campbell, Brian Travers, Terence Wilson, Norman Hassan and James Brown, although none of them were in attendance.

Speaking afterwards, band spokesman Adrian Stickland, said, 'While each of the band members are pleased that the judge has recognised that the amounts claimed in the statutory demands are overstated each of them will continue to dispute the amounts claimed in these proceedings.

'And if bankruptcy proceedings are issued following this hearing today the band will vigorously oppose them.

'For the sake of clarity, they are not bankrupt and they are not intending to become bankrupt.'

District Judge Musgrave added band members will also have to foot the bill for costs, which could be in the region of £57,000. The full amount of costs are yet to be decided.

UB40 - who took their name from the Unemployment Benefit form 40, which jobseekers filled in during the 1980s - was founded in Birmingham in 1978.

One in Ten - No 7, 1981
Red Red Wine - No 1, 1983
If It Happens Again - No 9, 1984

(I Can't Help) Falling In Love With You - No 1, 1993

The band has sold more than 70 million records worldwide and had more than 50 hit singles, the most successful hit being a cover version of Neil Diamond's Red Red Wine, which topped the charts in 1983.

They scored further chart toppers with a cover of the Sonny and Cher classic I Got You Babe in 1985 - which featured guest vocals from Pretenders singer Chrissie Hynde - and (I Can't Help) Falling In Love With You in 1993.

Their other top ten hits included One In Ten in 1981, Don't Break My Heart in 1985 and 1990's Kingston Town. They also scored number one albums in the U.K with 1983's Labour Of Love and Promises and Lies in 1993.

UB40 continued to have hits throughout the 90s and early part of the last decade including the rugby anthem Swing Low in 2003. However the band have been absent from the charts since their 2005 Kiss And Say Goodbye.

Their former frontman Ali Campbell - who is the brother of band member Robin - left the band in 2008. Although the other band members claimed it was to concentrate on solo projects he claimed that management and business issues had led him to leave.

He has since been replaced as lead singer by his brother Duncan, while reggae star Maxi Priest has also performed with the band during recent live shows.
Reasons for leaving: Former UB40 singer Ali Campbell said he warned other band members they were being 'manipulated'
Reasons for leaving: Former UB40 singer Ali Campbell said he warned other band members they were being 'manipulated'

In a radio interview which coincided with the outcome of the court hearing, Ali Campbell said the reason he left because 'he could see what was happening'.

He also claimed the remaining members of the band had been 'manipulated' and warned them what was happening.

'I was very proud of what I achieved with UB40,' he said. 'It was a band I started and I was with them for 28 years and we made 24 albums. But we were divided and ruled and this is what happened in the end.'

He added, 'UB40 have been asset stripped by the people around them. The people around the band have destroyed it with help of some of the members of the band.'

MICK JAGGER SUPERGROUP RELEASES FIRST SINGLE
Mick Jagger
Mick Jagger introduced the world this week to his eclectic new supergroup, SuperHeavy, releasing its first single, "Miracle Worker."
The reggae track, influenced by The Rolling Stones singer's visit to Jamaica, marks the first cut from the group's upcoming self-titled album, set to drop September 20, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Besides Jagger, SuperHeavy features the talents of Eurythmics guitarist and producer Dave Stewart, soul singer Joss Stone, film composer A.R. Rahman and reggae artist Damian Marley.

Group members told The Hollywood Reporter that the album will include influences from reggae, soul, Indian music and electronic sounds.
"As soon as we started playing together in the studio it gelled," Jagger told Gibson.com, "and all these different styles didn’t seem to be a problem to make them fit together... I hope people will like it.”

Stone told reporters that the group still has no touring plans, but if the album does well after its fall release, "we'll do some shows."

TANYA STEPHENS RELEASES VIDEO FOR GHETTA'S LIFE MOVIE SOUNDTRACK
New Jamaican film Ghett’a Life has already copped two awards at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, and Tanya Stephens, ‘Lyrical Queen of Dancehall’ who wrote the title track for the soundtrack has just completed the video for the single.
According to a press release from Break Through Communications, reggae visionary, Tanya Stephens, has written an analytic and thought-provoking tune that closely matches the groundbreaking storyline of the film.

So let the rain fall, and let the wind blow, Cause after the rainfall must come a rainbow, I keep dreaming of a better life, cause me must get a life.

So reads the chorus of the tune, which echoes the essence of Ghett’a Life, an action drama which tells the story of overcoming obstacles despite social and economic pressures.

Tanya’s involvement in Ghett’a Life was fitting, the release said, as she has penned some of the most memorable and touching reggae tracks for her growing worldwide audience. The lyrics are compelling, loaded with vivid imagery and biting social commentary about aspects of Jamaican life. The narrative in Tanya’s tune is almost a mirror image of the social commentary of the film.

“The film takes you through the various elements of storytelling. It cleared up a lot of things for me about Jamaica and showed me that there is still hope for the industry and the people,” Tanya was quoted as saying.

The storyline of Ghett’a Life is set against the backdrop of Kingston’s inner-city, and explores one boy’s attempt to achieve boxing glory and overcome his economic barriers. His efforts are persistent despite the political divide that threatens to tear his community and country apart. His journey takes him on a path that will force him to defy his family and his community and the result will either destroy him or bring his community together.

Having seen a rough cut version of the film, Tanya praised its story line. She explains that the lyrics had to be tailor made to match the circumstances of the film, as well as to fit the confines of what is known as a properly written song.

“That part was a bit of a challenge. I wanted to make it so that it was not too synonymous with the movie, yet reflect the themes of the movie. This is the first time the name of a movie has appeared so many times in a track I’ve done, so I had to make extra effort with this one,” the release quoted her as saying.

The music video to the track was directed by award winning film director Chris Browne, who also directed the film. “Once we had a rough cut of the film in November last year Tanya came and saw it… The song is powerful; the lyrics and message became an anthem for the film, so it was important to us to do a video with Tanya which showcases not only her talent but also the entire concept of the film,” the release quoted Browne as saying.

CALGARY REGGAE FEST BRINGS TASTES AND SOUND OF THE ISLAND TO CALGARY CANADA

Reggae Fest joins in cowboy fun - DJ showdown, cookout on menu

As the days of summer get hotter, the Calgary Reggae Festival Society intends to ensnare Calgarians with the mesmerizing tastes and the pulsating sounds of the Caribbean.
"What better way is there to warm everyone up for ReggaeFest 2011 than with the tastes and sounds of the islands?" says ReggaeFest producer Leo Cripps.
"I am sitting here salivating and just imagining the taste of jerk -hot, spicy and flavourful jerk pork, chicken, fish, beef -and the tastes of a cool island punch to accompany all that," Cripps says.
ReggaeFest 2011 will kick its summer programming off with the Great Reggae Cowboy Cookout and DJ Showdown on July 16 at Pineridge Community Hall.
"The Great Reggae Cowboy Cook-out will be a family fun day, reggae style," says Allison McDonald, co-ordinator of the event.
"It is an event where families who have been stampeding all week can enjoy something different while still in that stampeding mode," says McDonald.
The Great Reggae Cowboy Cook-out takes place from noon to 7 p.m.
Admission to the event is free.
Activities will include entertainment, games, cooking demonstration, storytelling and a multimedia presentation of The Evolution of Reggae: From Mento to Dance hall.
The DJ Showdown is an adult event taking place from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m.
Expect to hear several of Calgary's Reggae DJs vie for the title of ReggaeFest 2011 DJ, says Cripps.
The Great Reggae Cowboy Cook-out and DJ Showdown is one of several fundraisers being held to support Project ROAR (Reach Out And Restore), the society's outreach program to assist and complete the resource centre for the Windsor Forest Primary School in Portland, Jamaica.

ON THIS DAY IN REGGAE
1968:  Singer Foxy Brown (Jennifer Esmerelda Hylton) is born in Kingston, Jamaica.

SUGA ROY & CONRAD CRYSTAL TRIBUTE TO GREGORY ISAACS:
I give thanks to Jah to  inspire me with this idea to do this album "Suga Roy And Conrad Crystal Universal Tribute To Gregory Isaacs '' featuring Fantan Mojah and Luciano on seperate tracks. The Album have tracks such as Night Nurse, All I Have Is Love, Universal, Tune In, Hard Drugs, Border plus twelve more classic tracks. I respect Gregory very much as a icon in the reggae music, he was one of the great singer and song writer in culture and lovers rock reggae. He was one of my idols from I was a youth growing up, I love his music so much that in 2004 I team up with Conrad Crystal and do a remake of gregory classic '' Love Overdue'' and that remake was a success for me and Conrad Crystal everywhere we perform it people love it. And in 2006 I when this time and did a remake of ''Soon Forward'' with Gregory Isaacs himself it was a great experience for me to work with him as one of the great living icon at that time, This album is  produced by Leroy '' Suga Roy '' More for Fire Ball Records label, I want everyone to support this album.

INTUIT AND DO IT
"Everyone who has ever taken a shower has had an idea. It's the person who gets out of the shower, dries off, and does something about it that makes a difference."
