Doctor's Corner

I hope all of you are enjoying the extra day light hours with your friends and family this summer.  Many of you have expressed your concerns about your vitamin D levels.  Recent medical research has highlighted the importance of vitamin D levels for optimal health.  All major blood laboratories have recently raised the minimum reference ranges for vitamin D levels, which means many of you are being told you are borderline or low in vitamin D.  Before you panic, I want you to put this into perspective.  Now that the minimum levels have been raised, pharmaceutical companies have manufactured large prescription doses of vitamin D.  Isn't it convenient how there always seems to be an immediate prescription that follows the newly created problem?  Vitamin D is important and most of us will benefit from taking 2000 - 5000 IU per day for maintenance, but don't panic if you are told your levels are low this year when the same levels were ok the year before.  Always consult your Chiropractic Doctor before starting a new vitamin or nutritional product.

Healthy Skin Alternative

I have recently learned about a great alternative to botox and plastic surgery face lifts.  There is a healthy procedeure that utilizes microcurrent technology to activate energy prodution in the mitochonrial cells of facial muscles.  This process will tighten the skin and collagen to give a more youthful, tight look to the face.  The procedure is not as quick as botox or plastic surgery, but considerably safer and more gentle on the body.  For mor information please visit or call Lori Yeates at Sorteria Skin

Simple Solutions to Shoulder Pain.

Have you ever lifted your arm overhead quickly to reach for an object and felt shoulder pain?  Have you felt pain after performing a chest press, dip, or pull up?  Shoulder pain is very common and can result in debilitating symptoms if left untreated.  One of the most common shoulder conditions encountered is shoulder impingement, meaning that the round ball of the arm bone, called the head of the humerus, rubs or grinds up against the underside of your acromion process.

There are many causes of abnormal shoulder movements that contribute to shoulder pain.  Decreased extension or excessive rounding of the thoracic spine is one of the most common causes of abnormal shoulder movement and pain.  We sit all day at our desks or computers, which causes forward slumping posture in the mid back.  This causes the shoulder girdle to round forward and inferior, causing the shoulder joint to pinch when the arm is lifted overhead.  Another major cause is lack of strength or motion in the scapula, also known as the shoulder blade.  Finally, muscular imbalances between the pushing and pulling muscles can cause significant changes in the shoulder joint.

How can I help you with your shoulder pain?

I can help you with your shoulder pain by properly identifying tears, muscular imbalances, and abnormal joint movements that are contributing to your pain.  The shoulder joint can have abnormal joint motion where the collar bone meets the sternum,  where the collar bone meets the shoulder blade, the shoulder joint can get stuck forward and inferior or posterior, and/or the shoulder joint may have adhesions restricting normal ranges of motion.  For many patients, finding relief for shoulder pain is as simple as receiving specific shoulder adjustments along with corrective exercises. I utilize traditional orthopedic and neurological examination techniques combined with Dr. Hearon’s extremity adjusting evaluation techniques to properly address your shoulder problems.  I have attached a link to pictures that demonstrate common shoulder warm up movements that may help to decrease your shoulder pain without having to visit me.  If these movements do not decrease your shoulder pain by 50% or more over a 2 week period of time, you need to see me for a proper examination.  713-526-2225

Shoulder Warm Up Movements

Spinal Check up Before School Starts!

Summer is in full swing and your children are probably enjoying swimming, summer camp, and ice cream.  During the summer break many children play more aggressive sports and experience growth spurts.  For most, this is a normal part of development, but for some this can be the start of spine and pelvis developmental abnormalities.  Fortunately, most schools conduct some sort of spinal screening throughout the year to try and identify gross curves in children's spines.  I applaud this effort but feel this is not nearly thorough enough to adequately identify early problems of spine and pelvis formation.

There are many conditions that can develop or begin to manifest symptoms around the adolescent years of a child/teen's life.  Some of these conditions are spondylolysis, spondylolisthesis, spina bifida occulta, scoliosis, and leg length inequalities.  Simple chiropractic assessments, adjustments, and muscular coordination exercises can make the difference between a life of chronic pain, or a life of little to no back pain.  I want all of you with children to consider bringing your children to see me this summer for a comprehensive biomechanical assessment of all joints to help identify and prevent many of these conditions from causing pain or long term biomechanical changes.  Next month's issue will focus on scoliosis caused by leg length differences.

I am offering a comprehensive biomechanical exam for $35 per child under the age of 18.  I will be offering this through August15th.  This offers does not include the cost of x-ray images if necessary.  To redeem this offer email me and I will send you a printable certificate to present at my clinic.  dr.jpederson@hotmail.com
