SLIGHTLY STOOPID – SEEDLESS SUMMER TOUR VISITED SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, NEVADA

photos by "Sugarwolf"

Harvey’s Outdoor Concert venue is one of my favorite summer venues in the Tahoe/Reno area. A group of friends and myself headed up to the lake to see the Seedless Summer Tour.

Each one of us was interested in a different performer that was on the bill. The younger ones were all about Slightly Stoopid; I myself was excited to see Don Carlos who makes a guest appearance with Slightly Stoopid and and all of us were stoked to see Rebelution.

Slightly Stoopid have grown so much since I saw them several years ago. Their sound is full and rich. Their bio says it best:

"....built on a bedrock of nasty, oceanic slabs of dubby bass, meditative vocal harmonies, rock-steady guitar licks and tightly syncopated percussive rhythms, Slightly Stoopid illustrate a case study in underground success, steeped in years of hard touring, an improvisational business model, and a creative process that continues to unwind and push the envelope of a new jam-based genre the band helped to create."

I have been watching the tour dates that are posted in this e-Guide every week; those guys are on the move - there are almost 20 more tour dates over the next two months. Click here to see if they are coming to a town near you:

GREETINGS AND WELCOME TO THE FIRST ISSUE OF GRASSROOTS – THE MEDICINAL MARIJUANA MOVEMENT DIGITAL MAGAZINE.

There is a lot of information on the subject of marijuana these days and moreover, it’s  changing every day. That’s why we created this magazine – it’s beyond bongs and blondes at this point (God bless ‘em).

Marijuana is now a whole new ball game. More sophisticated
minds want to be kept apprised of the evolving status of the
plant in terms of medicine, politics and business, and culturally, in the kitchen and on the streets.

We are in the midst of a paradigm shift and the polarized
debate over this plant will likely become a relic of the past.
GrassRoots, as an observer of history unfolding, captures the  best of what these times have to offer: stories by pioneers  in the cannabis movement, the latest research by scientists,  legal and medical Q&A columns, tips on cultivating your own  medicine, market observations, as well as theory and even  comedy. Our contributors include doctors, yogis, lawyers,  connoisseurs, and farmers as we are geared toward all those  readers interested in and aware of the enormous changes  that are underfoot.

You’re part of the cutting edge! May these pages stimulate
your conversations and help create a new framework for a

POSTHUMOUS ALBUM FROM WINEHOUSE TO HAVE A REGGAE FEEL
A posthumous album by Amy Winehouse is likely to move away from the jazz influence of her two albums and be reggae inspired. Music industry insiders have also hinted it may prove her most autobiographical work.

The singer, who died aged 27 last Saturday, could have as many as seven singles in the top 40 this weekend. Meanwhile, details have been emerging about scores of new tracks she had recorded that are likely to become an as-yet-untitled third album.

Her record company remained tight-lipped over the album's contents but, according to her biographer, many of the new songs have a reggae feel, inspired by the time she spent in St Lucia last year. "In what we can tell from the third album, I think she had been quite influenced by reggae," said Chas Newkey-Burden, who wrote Amy Winehouse: The Biography in 2009. Speaking from his home near Windsor, Mr Newkey-Burden added: "I think Amy would have been quite keen for a slightly indulgent third album. It might have been her way of showing the world what she was really like."

Recording sessions on the album were fraught and Winehouse was said to be unsatisfied with the work. But it is unlikely her record company will try to prevent the songs from seeing the light of day.

SHAGGY'S SUMMER IN KINGSTON TOPS THE BILLBOARD CHART
Catch Di Riddim

BY KEVIN JACKSON Observer writer

Dancehall artiste Shaggy earns his fifth number one album on Billboard's reggae album tally this week. His digital release Summer in Kingston, which was launched two weeks ago, debuts in the top spot.

Shaggy's journey on the Billboard reggae album listing began in 1994 when Pure Pleasure peaked at number nine. A year later the Grammy-winning Boombastic reached the number one spot.

Midnite Lover was released in 1997. It peaked at number one on the reggae album chart and contained a remake of Irma Franklin's Piece of My Heart which featured singer Marsha.

The Diamond-selling Hot Shot released in 2000 failed to chart on the reggae tally. It, however, found better luck topping both Billboard's 200 and R&B hip hop album charts.

The 2002 effort Lucky Day reached number one, so too did 2007's Intoxication. Three other titles, Mr Lover Lover: the Best of Shaggy Part 1 (2002), Clothes Drop (2005), and The Best of Shaggy (2008) peaked at numbers two and four, respectively.

Incidentally, without a major hit stateside, Summer in Kingston debuted at number 29 on Billboard's R&B hip hop album chart.

THE REGGAE REVOLUTION TOUR FEATURING REGGAE CROONER GRAMPS MORGAN AND KyMANI MARLEY WHICH CONCLUDED RECENTLY AT THE ROXY THEATRE IN LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA IS BEING HAILED AS A SUCCESS.
Reports indicate that the tour attracted thousands of reggae fans in Vancouver, Victoria, Spokane, Seattle, Bellingham, Portland and included two heritage festivals: the 27th annual Reggae on the River in northern California where Gramps and Ky-mani shared stage with Tony Rebel, Bushman and Queen Ifrica; and the 12th annual Ska Festival in Victoria, BC -- a popular three day celebration of ska, reggae, dub and punk music.

"It was a special tour and fans enjoyed it! The music was great, the vibe was magical...I had the time of my life," Gramps noted.

The US-based singer reportedly delivered well on tracks such as Come Back To Bed, One In A Million, Wash The Tears Away, One Night and Pslams 23. The audience is also said to have enjoyed the coming together of Gramps and Ky-mani for their riveting rendition of the Marley classic Get Up, Stand Up each night.

"I feel honoured to have had this opportunity to work with Ky-mani. The tour was historical in a sense as never before has a Marley and a Morgan toured together, although we have worked on records before. It was the first time ever and won't be the last as it was pure chemistry. We have definitely formed a closer musical bond on this tour and I look forward to our up coming East Coast tour as well as working with him on other projects in the future" he noted.

The tour came on the heels of the release of the hit single The Almighty.

Earlier this year Gramps made headlines for his stellar performance with his brother Peetah at the Reggae 4 Japan, benefit concert, to support the Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami Relief Effort of the American Red Cross at the York College Performing Arts Center in Queens, New York.

"I feel blessed to have been asked to contribute my talent to help raise funds to assist Japan in its rebuilding efforts" he said.

For the remainder of 2011, he will focus on completing his sophomore album Reggae Music Lives. He is also producing songs for other young reggae acts, including his son Jemere, who was recently signed to his Dada Son Entertainment record label.

MAVADO NCHARGED WITH ASSAULT, DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTY
(Jamaica Gleaner) International dancehall artiste Mavado is scheduled to appear in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate Court on August 8 to answer criminal charges laid against him, following an incident in which two men were assaulted.
Thirty-year-old Mavado – born David Brooks – whose address police listed as West Armour Heights, Kingston 8, was arrested and charged yesterday for assault occasioning bodily harm and malicious destruction of property. He was also given station bail in connection with the incident.  Police reports state that, about 7 p.m. on July 22, Brooks allegedly assaulted a man and damaged his Toyota Camry motor vehicle along the Belmont main road in St James.

The complainant allegedly stopped along the main road to allow a line of traffic to pass when Brooks and members of his entourage attacked him and his son.  The complainant sustained injuries to his back, leg and forehead.  Minutes after his arrest, a different picture was painted on the AllianceJamaica Twitter page, which acts as a public relations tool for Mavado and mentor Bounty Killer.

“Mavado reported to station, was charged with malicious destruction of property and assault and bailed immediately for a later court date,” one tweet stated.  “Nobody got chopped, nobody teeth lick out. All of this way outta (out of) proportion. We shoulder sum (some) blame but there is more to this than cops/media sayin(g).”

Another man, whom it is alleged attempted to bribe the complainant on Tuesday in Montego Bay, was taken into custody by members of the Anti-Corruption Branch. The man, a popular Montego Bay-based party promoter, was found in possession of some $500,000 and a licensed firearm. He is to be charged with perverting the course of justice.

“Nobody was trying to buy out any case either,” read another tweet from AllianceJamaica.  Mavado’s arrest comes on the heels of a successful performance by the entertainer at the 2011 staging of Reggae Sumfest last Thursday night, and less than a month after his United States visa was returned to him.

There was no large gathering awaiting Mavado outside the Montego Bay Freeport Police Station, as he was whisked away in a waiting Honda Edix minivan.

SWEDISH REGGAE FESTIVAL PAYS TRIBUTE TO DANCEHALL AND STREET DANCE WITH A "Dance4Life" CONCEPT
UPPSALA, SWEDEN - The Uppsala Reggae Festival, being held in Sweden for the eleventh time, is taking a giant step into the new decade with a focus on street dance, dance performances, dance parties, andcontemporary reggae artists reaching out to a new generation of reggae fans. The Uppsala Reggae Festival is the biggest reggae festival in Scandinavia and this year takes place on 4-6 August.

The traditional theme of the Uppsala Reggae Festival “Life is Great” is being expressed in a new way this year with a focus on dance. The major new addition to thefestival “Dance4Life” turns the spotlight on and celebrates street dance with inspiration from Jamaica and different areas of the Caribbean. The concept behind Dance4Life is the intention of increasing interest in Sweden in dancing reggae dancehall by providing high energy dance performances and dancehall parties on the evenings of the festival and dance workshops during the days. More than 70 active street dancers have been invited to perform, guaranteeing that energy and enjoyment levels can be maintained over the three days of the festival.

“Thereis a positive and innovative up-tempo energy within the international reggae scene that we also want to spread to Sweden. This year we have devoted ourselves to offering both a music festival and a dance festival to celebrate all the joy there is in both the more established and newer forms of reggae”, says Yared Tekeste, who founded the Uppsala Reggae Festival.

Last year the Uppsala Reggae Festival celebrated its 10th anniversarywith a ‘best of’ festival with performances by the most prominent reggae acts to appear at the festival since its inception in2001. This year also has performances by world stars representing the foundation, such as Toots & The Maytals, Ken Boothe, The Heptones and Johnny Clarke. But this year there is less of the more established and more of the new wave with acts representing dancehall, modern roots reggae and reggae fusion. This year’s lineup includes Elephant Man, Gyptian, Queen Ifrica, Mr.Vegas and Richie Spies. There will also be performances from Swedish dancehall representatives Kapten Röd and the reggae fusion-band SKA-N-SKA, fusing Ska, Punk and Balkan musical influences.

REGGAE LEGEND, PETER TOSH'S LEGACY GROWS COLUMBIA LEGACY RELEASES DOUBLE CDS OF 'LEGALIZE IT' AND 'EQUAL RIGHTS'
Tosh @ Little Premier Sq

by Fikisha Cumbo

KINGSTON, Jamaica - Peter Tosh's songs, "Legalize It" and "Bush Doctor" have become 'herb' standards. Released in 1977, "Legalize It", though banned from air play in Jamaica, could still be heard in yards all over the island.

Peter said: "Herb is one of Jamaica's international resources, seen?

Jamaica has the earth to produce the best herb in the West. I am listening one day to see the first shipment legally leave the country, the same way rum or bauxite leaves....The many beating I have suffered at the hands of the Jamaican police is for smoking herb. This leads to my fervent plea for the legalization of herb, for equal rights and justice..... Prime Minister Michael Manley interceded with the Jamaican radio and other authorities to have the tune "Legalize It" play on the air." In appreciation, Tosh gave Manley 60 EQUAL RIGHTS albums to distribute as he wished.
