It's Tick Season!

As seen on Fido Friendly’s Blog, written by Camp Bow Wow Boise: http://www.fidofriendly.com/blog/how-to-handle-ticks-on-your-dog

Your dog comes in from a romp by the river and settles down on your lap for a belly rub when you feel a bump on your dog's soft fur. When you look closer you find the bane of many a dog and dog owner's life: the tick.

Male brown dog ticks and non-engorged female ticks are flat and brown. Deer ticks are tiny; you can barely see them if they haven't had their 'drink' yet. As the female ticks fill up on your dog's blood they start to look like gray beans about a quarter inch long. They have four small legs on each side near their mouth. The deer tick is known to carry Lyme disease and can be harder to find than the dog tick because it is so small.  We have seen both types on dogs recently.

How do you safely remove the tick? First you need the right tools, then you need a steady hand. First, get yourself a fine-tipped tweezers or you can use one of the new tick removal instruments they sell at your local pet supply superstore. The new instruments let you remove the tick without squeezing the tick's body so you don't introduce harmful bacteria from the tick into your dog's bloodstream.

1. First, grab the tick by the head or the mouth parts right where they enter the skin. This can be hard if the tick isn't engorged with blood. Don't grab the tick by the body.

2. Now you have a firm hold on the tick's head. Pull firmly back and out in a straight motion. Don't twist the tick as you are pulling it out.

3. Look at the ugly thing wriggling around in your tweezers. These things are just plain yucky! We cannot figure out one good thing about these creatures! Then stick it in a jar of alcohol to kill it. Ticks don't die when you flush them down the toilet.

4. Just in case some bacteria were released during the tick removal, dab your dog's skin with a disinfectant ointment.

5. Wash your hands too. You may actually feel like taking a shower.

Some old wives’ tales about tick removal are not effective, and can be dangerous. Do not burn the tick with a hot match; you could burn your dog, or you. Sticking petroleum jelly or soap on the tick, or dabbing it with alcohol won't work either. You need to pull out the tick with the tweezers.

What happens if part of the tick's head stays in your dog? Don't panic. Your dog's skin will inflame and break the pieces with time. Sometimes your dog's skin will react after you pull out a tick because the tick's saliva can be irritating to the dog. You may notice swelling or even a scar with a hairless area after you remove the tick. You could use some hydrocortisone cream to help if the skin looks really irritated, but it will calm down naturally, with time.

Of course, the best thing to do is prevent ticks from biting your dog in the first place. Use anti-tick medicine as prescribed by your vet and keep your dog out of high grasses and leaves. Check them regularly, and remove ticks promptly.

Remember, you need the right tools and a steady hand to win the war against the tick.

Fun Fact About Camp Bow Wow:  Benefits of Certified Camp Counselors®

At Camp Bow Wow your pup will get to spend quality time playing and interacting with other Campers his size, whether he is here for Daycare or spending a few nights in our cozy cabins. Our Campers actually socialize with other dogs and get to come and go as they please through our large indoor and outdoor play yards. Many of our competitors call daycare playtime but only allow the dogs to be out for a short amount of time, not always allowing interaction with other dogs.

Providing your dog with positive exposures to a wide variety of stimuli in their first months of life give the pup confidence and get them accustomed to different types of people, sights, sounds and dogs, helping prevent fearful or aggressive responses in the future. Our Campers are always being monitored by loving Certified Camp Counselors® who are pet first aid certified and have gone through detailed and thorough training to understand dog behavior. Our Camp Counselors spend all day at Day Camp, from early in the morning to late in the evening, watching over our Campers. They are the ones who give out the special tasty "Campfire" treats each night before lights out, and tuck each Camper into their own spacious, comfy and clean Camp Bow Wow® cabin (sorry, no mint on the pillow).

Bow Wow Buddies Foundation Update:  On Our Way Home Project Progress Report!

In December 2010, to celebrate our 10-Year Anniversary, we announced the winner of our "On Our Way Home Project,” a project aimed at providing assistance to shelters in need across the country. The winner, the Fallen Timber Western Pennsylvania Humane Society, located in Elizabeth, PA was the recipient of the program's inaugural $50,000 grant!

Our remodel and renovation efforts are underway and on June 30th, we made a site visit and took video and photos of the existing conditions.  Since that time, we have been working on getting the architectural plans for the renovations completed, as well as getting estimates for some of the improvements to determine the final scope of work.  Our goal is to accomplish as much work as possible with the funds available by the end of October.  The next step will be soliciting and getting final bids for all the work.

The goal of this project is to incorporate some of what we have learned over the past 10 years about the benefits of our Camps and the open-play environment and integrate some of that into shelters across the nation.  The more dogs can socialize and play with other dogs rather than be kept in the small kennels and dog runs they have now will vastly improve their quality of life, their socialization skills and their overall well-being, all making them better candidates for adoption rather than euthanasia.  The list of intended improvements to the facility includes adding:

  • A new fenced play area as well as a door from the dog holding area so that the dogs can freely access the outdoor play yard space
  • Pea gravel, play yard equipment, outdoor pup pools and shade sails
  • Dedicated air conditioning to both the dog holding areas for increased comfort of the dogs (which requires improving the electrical service)
  • New flooring, paint and other touchups to completely refresh the lobby, office areas and dog viewing area
  • A separate entrance for easier access to the lobby/animal drop off area

Stay tuned for before and after photos when we finish the transformation around October 2011.  To learn more about the On Our Way Home Project and make a donation to our Bow Wow Buddies Foundation, please click here.

Thank you to every client and franchisee who donated to help us fund this initial grant and for your support in funding future grants so we can continue proving that socialization and enrichment will save lives.
