REGGAE HISTORY MADE: MISTA MAJAH P FIRST JAMAICAN REGGAE ARTIST TO RELEASE PRO GAY 13-TRACK REGGAE ALBUM

(note: to listen to his music, scroll down the newsletter to New Release section)

Mista Majah P has just released his new reggae album, marking a huge step in the career of the multi-talented singer-songwriter. The lyrical focus of the album is to liberate the homophobic and celebrate the LGBT (lesbian gay bi-sexual transgender) experience. The release of this album will hopefully build his fan base and get his music heard by more people than ever, especially in his native home of Jamaica.

The CD, ‘Tolerance’, consists of 11 original songs, each providing a combination of his melodious vocals and heartfelt lyrics. The rhythmic undercurrent bears treatment to roots-reggae, dancehall, hip-hop, pop and r&b.

The album was recorded, engineered, mixed and mastered at Shaolin Studio in Hayward California and all songs are written, performed and produced by Majah P. The theme of the album underlies the changes he has gone through in recent years with marriage, a new son and becoming an American citizen. It was these changes of status that allowed him this opportunity to explore, through his music, the experience of all who have suffered hate, intolerance, discrimination and bullying because of their sexual orientation.

‘Tolerance’ reveals raw lyrical emotions, pulsating drum-and-base reggae rifts, plus the stunning array of influences that have found their way into his music. He was already soaked with the red gold and green roots of reggae music when he migrated to Toronto, Canada in 1982 and carried with him the new sound ‘Reggae DanceHall Roots”, which he unleashed on the Canadian reggae music scene. He was nominated 10 times for the Canadian Reggae Music Award, winning on four occasions, including ‘Entertainer of the Year’ in 1997.  He has performed all over the USA, Canada, Jamaica and England and brings to the live stage his special brand of total entertainment.

Also an accomplished actor, Mista Majah P has appeared in three feature films including the highly acclaimed “Cop and a Bad Man” performing on screen and writing and performing one of the sound tracks. He has appeared in over ten music videos and released over 12 music CDs.

He does not shy away from including political references in his music; this can be deduced from the samples of his songs in ‘Tolerance’, which include sound bites and excerpts from news broadcasts relating to homophobia.

With the release of ‘Tolerance’, Majah P has broken new ground by taking on the cultural intolerance of a section of his native Jamaican society, and the LGBT rights debates in the halls of the US Congress.

Fans are encouraged to visit the artist on MySpace and Facebook. Sample tracks are available at cdbaby.com, itunes and independentdistro.com

GREETINGS AND WELCOME TO THE FIRST ISSUE OF GRASSROOTS – THE MEDICINAL MARIJUANA MOVEMENT DIGITAL MAGAZINE.

There is a lot of information on the subject of marijuana these days and moreover, it’s  changing every day. That’s why we created this magazine – it’s beyond bongs and blondes at this point (God bless ‘em).

Marijuana is now a whole new ball game. More sophisticated
minds want to be kept apprised of the evolving status of the
plant in terms of medicine, politics and business, and culturally, in the kitchen and on the streets.

We are in the midst of a paradigm shift and the polarized
debate over this plant will likely become a relic of the past.
GrassRoots, as an observer of history unfolding, captures the  best of what these times have to offer: stories by pioneers  in the cannabis movement, the latest research by scientists,  legal and medical Q&A columns, tips on cultivating your own  medicine, market observations, as well as theory and even  comedy. Our contributors include doctors, yogis, lawyers,  connoisseurs, and farmers as we are geared toward all those  readers interested in and aware of the enormous changes  that are underfoot.

You’re part of the cutting edge! May these pages stimulate

MARLEY’S MELLOW MOOD ANNOUNCES SPONSORSHIP OF ONE LOVE FESTIVAL, LONDON
Leading Reggae Festival partners with Marley family to chill festival goers and do good!

JIMMY CLIFF RETURNS WITH NEW LP
After seven years Jimmy Cliff is back with a new EP to be released in November. This is especially good news that this is pre-cursor to a new studio album in early 2012. For this EP he is teamed up with producer Tim Armstrong. He has also a recorded a cover of The Clash's seminal "Guns of Brixton".

Artist: Jimmy Cliff
Title: as-yet-untitled
Release date: Unknown
Label: Collective Sounds
Single:

Jimmy Cliff
Buy at: Amazon

For the EP and full-length, Cliff teamed up with Armstrong - a lifelong admirer of his work and a known purveyor of reggae music's lasting influence and cultural impact. "Tim has such a great foothold in the tradition. He woke me up to a lot of the things I had forgotten," said Cliff. "I enjoy the creative spontaneity of collaborating with other people. I always want to try new things. It's the type of creative energy I have."

Armstrong adds, "Jimmy is one of my musical heroes and I've been responding to his music my entire life."

The unlikely pairing has produced songs deeply rooted in the reggae tradition with their own renewed feel. "I knew vaguely about Tim through working with Joe Strummer and wanted to bring something fresh to the marketplace. Us coming from such different musical poles brought a great energy to the songs. I wanted to create something with a fresh sound - that's why we decided to test the waters," said Cliff. "I've always wanted to work with him and we connected immediately, which doesn't happen all the time," added Armstrong. "This is Jimmy's record and I'm honored to be a part of it."

On the new songs, Cliff expand on the heritage of a genre that he was such an integral part of popularizing. The music echoes Cliff's work as a lifelong activist and purveyor of social justice - addressing issues such as war, economical instability, and political hypocrisy.

Cliff is the only living musician to receive Jamaica's Order of Merit, the country's highest honor for achievement in the arts and sciences. In 2007, he was also honored with a doctorate from The University of the West Indies. In a career that spans nearly fifty years, he has sold more than twenty million albums, with over twenty-five releases to his credit. He has appeared in several films, including, most notably, The Harder They Come, whose impact on reggae and pop music in general can scarcely be overstated. He has collaborated with countless other legends including The Rolling Stones, Elvis Costello, Joe Strummer and Annie Lennox. Bob Dylan has called Cliff's "Vietnam" the best protest song he ever heard, and a short list of artists who have covered Cliff's compositions ranges from Willie Nelson and Cher, to New Order and Fiona Apple.

In 2010, Cliff was one of six artists inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Cliff will spend the rest of the year touring Europe and putting the final touches on his forthcoming full-length release.

At 63 years old, Cliff remains as passionate and creative as ever. "This is another step in the journey which I am enjoying very much," said Cliff. "These songs are about the sacred fire inside of me. As an artist and activist, I feel I have more to accomplish. The fire is still there."

Diversity of Music Belies the Unifying Message of Bayside Rocks

Bayside Rocks Music & Arts Festival features World Beat music with a uniquely multicultural appeal Saturday, November 19, 2011 at Bayfront Park in Downtown Miami

MIAMI, FL (August 18, 2011) – A cornucopia of music will provide a feast of multicultural delights as world beat music takes center stage at the Bayside Rocks Music & Arts Festival on Saturday November 19, 2011 in Miami. A melodic smorgasbord featuring a musical genre for every taste - including reggae, Jamaican, Latin American, Kompa, Caribbean, rock ‘n roll, and more - will highlight this year’s concert.

In addition to a special tribute to the life of Honorable Robert Nesta ‘Bob’ Marley and 50 years of Wailers music, this year’s Bayside Rocks will feature world music headliners Bunny Wailer and The Original Wailers.  Also hitting the stage are a unique group of artists whose musical brilliance is eclipsed only by its message of love and hope.

“I carefully selected this lineup because every artist has devoted his life to spreading a message that is consistent with my purpose,” said ROCKAZ MVMT president and CEO Alfonso D’Niscio Brooks.  “We are all striving to change the world for the better by empowering people to make a positive difference through the universal language of music.”

According to artist Warrior King, "As a Rastafarian you just don't sing music, you sing music with a purpose and a mission. To the four corners of the Earth I carry my music, and the message of love, to all people of all races."

Cultura Profetica is a Puerto Rican reggae band with lyrics that center mostly on socio-political and ecological issues. Pato Banton sometimes invites his fans to join him in a prayer circle after the show and is committed to helping people “stay positive and never give in.”

Connis Vanterpool is a brilliantly talented musician who has worked with scores of international artists but is most proud of his involvement with the volunteer work he has done in the community, providing free music workshops at various elementary and secondary schools. Tabou Combo’s vocalist and main songwriter Fanfan said, "We want people to dance and forget their sorrows." And while there is no doubt that Tabou’s music is made for dancing, it also features lyrics that focus on social issues of the day.

Gondwana, from Chile, has been spreading the word of Jah Love, standing tall and strong in a peace-loving position of musical and lyrical creation. And according to artist Luciano, "We are all children of the Most High God and I just want my family and my fans to receive the blessings that God has given."  The Wailing Souls’ Lloyd ‘Bread’ McDonald adds to this, "Apart from the musical aspect of what we are doing, we see it as a very spiritual thing. Whenever you start singing, everyone come together. The bad guys come together, the good guys come together, everybody come together. The rich people, poor people, like one. The message what we a try to preach is love and unity.”

“Our ultimate goal is to uplift the spirit and inspire people of every ilk to give of themselves to help make the world a better place in which to live,” said D’Niscio Brooks.  “We’re accomplishing this task by spreading art, culture and music while raising money to end poverty, feed the hungry and shelter the homeless.”

This year’s concert will include a food drive benefiting Curley’s House (www.curleyshouseinc.com) an organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for low-to-moderate income individuals, families, the elderly, youth-at-risk, the abused, and HIV/AIDS infected individuals by providing the nutrition they need. Guests will be asked to contribute two or more cans of food as part of the cost of admission.

“Given the philanthropic nature of this event, we’re inviting all civic minded companies to join us as sponsors,” D’Niscio Brooks said.  “It’s a great way to get your name in front of tens of thousands of people while ensuring that hundreds of thousands of dollars are donated to a very worthy cause.”

The Bayside Rocks Music & Arts Festival is scheduled for Saturday November 19, 2011 at Bayfront Park in Downtown Miami.  For additional information about corporate sponsorships and ticket sales for the 2011 Bayside Rocks Music & Arts Festival contact Margaret Kessler at 954-284-4819 or email her at media@rockazmvmt.com

REGGAEFEST IS HERE! CALGARY, ALBERTA

"The last time I was in Calgary was over 20 years ago with Dennis Brown and I just cannot wait to be back with a new generation of Reggae artistes" says the Big Ship captain Freddie McGregor.

If there are royal families in Reggae, then the McGregor's would only be second to the Marley's for the throne.

" Think about it, the legendary Freddie McGregor has remained consistent as a performer, his son Stephen is the top producer in the Jamaica, son Chino just released a very highly acclaimed debut album and daughter Shema is building a name for herself. When you say Big Ship all ears perk up and eyes open wide" says a very excited Leo Cripps, ReggaeFest producer.

For REGGAEFEST 2011 the Grammy nominated Freddie McGregor and the Big Ship family sail into Calgary with the past, present and future directions of Reggae music including Reggae songbird Nadine Sutherland and Big Ship protégé Laden and this has had every Reggae lover in and around the city excited.

"It's just incredible to see how many of our online ticket purchases are from the 780 and 250 area codes" says the festival's Executive Director Cindy Nield. "This really shows that REGGAEFEST truly belongs to all the people of Western Canada.

SUGA ROY - SUGA ROY & CONRAD CRYSTAL UNIVERSAL TRIBUTE TO GREGORY ISAACS:
From Suga Roy:

I give thanks to Jah for inspiring me with this idea to do this album "Suga Roy And Conrad Crystal Universal Tribute To Gregory Isaacs” featuring Fantan Mojah and Luciano on separate tracks.

The album has tracks such as ‘Night Nurse’, ‘All I Have Is Love’,
‘Universal’, ‘Tune In’, ‘Hard Drugs’, ‘Border’ plus 12 more classic tracks. I respect Gregory very much as an icon of reggae music; he was one of the greatest singer/songwriter in culture and lovers rock reggae and was one of my idols since I was a youth.

I love his music so much that in 2004 I teamed up with Conrad Crystal to do a remake of the Gregory classic ‘Love Overdue’ and that remake was a success for me and Conrad Crystal; everywhere we performed it, people loved it.

In 2006 I did a remake of ‘Soon Forward’ with Gregory Isaacs himself! It was a great experience for me to work with him as one of the great living icons at that time.

This new album is produced by Leroy ‘Suga Roy’ More for Fire Ball Records label. I want everyone to support this album.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness in a descending spiral of destruction....The chain reaction of evil--hate begetting hate, wars producing more wars--must be broken, or we shall be plunged into the dark abyss of annihilation."
Martin Luther King, Jr., Strength To Love, 1963.

It will make us very sad if you do, and perhaps your removal will be the one the makes us decide this no longer worth doing at all, and all the information we provide will go away forever and musicians will sit home alone at night and cry because they have no one to play for because no one knows about their shows.
