ZIGGY MARLEY & TREVOR HALL AT LAKE TAHOE SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 25th!
|
|
|
Ziggy Marley, five-time Grammy-Award winning musician, will perform in Lake Tahoe inside the MontBleu Theatre at MontBleu Casino Resort, Sunday, September 25, 2011, along with special guest, Trevor Hall.
General admission tickets will be available for $35. Tickets will be available by calling MontBleu, 775-588-3515, by visiting the Box Office, or online at www.ticketmaster.com
Ziggy Marley is a Jamaican musician and leader of the band. He is the oldest son of famed Reggae musician, Bob Marley. He has established his presence on the public stage for over a quarter-century. Which is why, perhaps, there's a wisp of irony in naming his new album Wild and Free, given not only the focused writing and recording of his fourth solo studio album, but also Ziggy's concurrent involvement in an ambitious tour stretching through this spring and summer, as well as other projects in the realm of publishing and filmmaking. And with the arrival of a new baby requiring his attention, it's remarkable Ziggy is able to capture the energy to keep his sound wild and free! His new album was released this past June. Ziggy became politically active, working with the United Nations and creating a record label called Ghetto Youths Crew.
Opening up for Ziggy Markey is singer/songwriter, Trevor Hall, whose sunny, reggae-infused pop sound draws equally from folk, reggae, and hip-hop. His gritty vocal style has been compared to Dave Matthews. Trevor has worked with such producers as John Alagia (John Mayer, Jason Mraz, Dave Matthews) and The Laboriel Brothers (Sting, Paul McCartney), has appeared at the famous Lollapalooza festival and has toured with such acts as Stevie Nicks, Jason Mraz, The Wailers, and Ben Harper. Trevor is a musician’s musician, as exemplified by Colbie Caillat who claims "Trevor has one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard."
$35 tix available at all Ticketmaster outlets, and at the MontBleu Box Office, or online www.ticketmaster.com or by phone: 775-588-3515.

GREETINGS AND WELCOME TO THE FIRST ISSUE OF GRASSROOTS – THE MEDICINAL MARIJUANA MOVEMENT DIGITAL MAGAZINE.
|
|
|
There is a lot of information on the subject of marijuana these days and moreover, it’s changing every day. That’s why we created this magazine – it’s beyond bongs and blondes at this point (God bless ‘em).
Marijuana is now a whole new ball game. More sophisticated minds want to be kept apprised of the evolving status of the plant in terms of medicine, politics and business, and culturally, in the kitchen and on the streets.
We are in the midst of a paradigm shift and the polarized debate over this plant will likely become a relic of the past. GrassRoots, as an observer of history unfolding, captures the best of what these times have to offer: stories by pioneers in the cannabis movement, the latest research by scientists, legal and medical Q&A columns, tips on cultivating your own medicine, market observations, as well as theory and even comedy. Our contributors include doctors, yogis, lawyers, connoisseurs, and farmers as we are geared toward all those readers interested in and aware of the enormous changes that are underfoot.
You’re part of the cutting edge! May these pages stimulate your conversations and help create a new framework for a better world.

The 3rd Annual Smoke Tree Tour 2011 featuring reggae artist Marlon Asher, Mega Banton, Al Pancho, Soul Medic and Rocker T backed by the 7th Street Band. This is the 3rd year running we started with 2 shows with reggae artist Prestige and Mega Banton, they had a underground hit song called "Smoke Free" together from the first time I heard that tune I said to myself this song too great and it can be a California smoker's anthem especially in North California so I discuss it with the Artistes and we decided to let's do!
The tour was a building process - we had support of the reggae community but the People were sceptical - but the artistes popularity and talents until they saw them performed and everyone left the show wanting more of the good vibes and energy.
Last year an opportunity landed in my hand and I hold on to it tight. The "Ganja Farmer" Marlon Asher a Reggae artist out of Trinidad & Tobago was going to be in the area and he link me about being on Smoke Tree Tour so it was the right combination to pair the tour with him as the headliner and history was made.
The Smoke Tree Tour was made for California and the rest of the world so contact me if you want this tour in your town for 2012 knakdemout@gmail.com

Marlon Asher
Marlon Asher, a native Trinidadian is the first reggae singer out of Trinidad & Tobago who is now one of the most sought out artists in the country. The name "Asher" was derived from the 12 Tribes of Israel and "Asher" is the tribe which represents December and the spirit of Christ. His musical style is that of a conscious reggae artist and he cites Bob Marley, Dennis Brown and Barrington Levy as some of his musical mentors. Marlon feels that reggae touches his soul and he wants to communicate that extension of spiritual soulfulness with the world. His messages are easily conveyed through the poignant lyrics in his songs Blessings, Give Thanks & Praises, Love of Jah and Fit & Strong, he also has a radio, favorite club hit, and Strong following with his Monster hit song "Ganja Farmer"
Mega Banton

Inspired by the likes of Burro Banton and Buju Banton, and with a similar gruff style of delivery, he achieved international success in the early 1990s with singles such as "First Position", "Decision", "No Ninja, No Buju", and "Sound Boy Killing", working with the Black Scorpio team. He recorded a duet with Leroy Smart ("Mr. Want All"), and in 1994 had a follow up hit with his single "Money First". When Garnett Silk died, Banton released the "A Tribute to Garnett Silk" single, along with Sattalite. In 1988 he had a combination hit with Barrington Levy "She's Mine". In 1995 he made his major-label album debut with *1,000,000 Megwatts With Sony Records*. His latest hit is "Stay Fly" and his California hit song "I'm so High"

REGGAE ARTIST LITTLE ROY TO RELEASE NIRVANA COVERS ALBUM
|
|
|
|
Jamaican solo artist Little Roy is to release a new reggae album featuring songs by legendary grunge band Nirvana. The album is called ‘Battle for Seattle’ and is due for release on 5th September.
Little Roy will also be performing on the Festival Republic Stage at next weekend’s Reading and Leeds festivals, where you will be able to see him perform some of the tracks from the new album.
In a style similar to that of The Easy Star All-Stars, who have released reggae versions of Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ and Radiohead’s ‘OK Computer’, ‘Battle for Seattle’ features renditions of 10 Nirvana classics, including ‘Lithium’, ‘About A Girl’ and ‘Heart Shaped Box’.
Speaking about the album, producer Prince Fatty said: “We had the best intentions at heart. We had to think about it from both sides. We wanted to be respectful to Nirvana and Little Roy. He’s the real deal. We couldn’t just rip into this.”
Little Roy added: “When I listened to the lyrics as he sung them, I found it hard to pick up on what he was saying. The lyrics came too quickly for my ears and were buried in the music. It sounded to me like he was crying out. You have to listen deep to get it. The melody was always there, though, so I knew this was a chance for me to bring them up so people could really hear what Kurt was saying. People could enjoy the words of these great songs through me singing them in my reggae style – reggae fans like me who didn’t know about Nirvana would love the songs, and Nirvana fans could enjoy the music all over again.”

REGGAE HISTORY MADE: MISTA MAJAH P FIRST JAMAICAN REGGAE ARTIST TO RELEASE PRO GAY 13-TRACK REGGAE ALBUM
|
|
|
(note: to listen to his music, scroll down the newsletter to New Release section)
Mista Majah P has just released his new reggae album, marking a huge step in the career of the multi-talented singer-songwriter. The lyrical focus of the album is to liberate the homophobic and celebrate the LGBT (lesbian gay bi-sexual transgender) experience. The release of this album will hopefully build his fan base and get his music heard by more people than ever, especially in his native home of Jamaica.
The CD, ‘Tolerance’, consists of 11 original songs, each providing a combination of his melodious vocals and heartfelt lyrics. The rhythmic undercurrent bears treatment to roots-reggae, dancehall, hip-hop, pop and r&b.
The album was recorded, engineered, mixed and mastered at Shaolin Studio in Hayward California and all songs are written, performed and produced by Majah P. The theme of the album underlies the changes he has gone through in recent years with marriage, a new son and becoming an American citizen. It was these changes of status that allowed him this opportunity to explore, through his music, the experience of all who have suffered hate, intolerance, discrimination and bullying because of their sexual orientation.
‘Tolerance’ reveals raw lyrical emotions, pulsating drum-and-base reggae rifts, plus the stunning array of influences that have found their way into his music. He was already soaked with the red gold and green roots of reggae music when he migrated to Toronto, Canada in 1982 and carried with him the new sound ‘Reggae DanceHall Roots”, which he unleashed on the Canadian reggae music scene. He was nominated 10 times for the Canadian Reggae Music Award, winning on four occasions, including ‘Entertainer of the Year’ in 1997. He has performed all over the USA, Canada, Jamaica and England and brings to the live stage his special brand of total entertainment.
Also an accomplished actor, Mista Majah P has appeared in three feature films including the highly acclaimed “Cop and a Bad Man” performing on screen and writing and performing one of the sound tracks. He has appeared in over ten music videos and released over 12 music CDs.
He does not shy away from including political references in his music; this can be deduced from the samples of his songs in ‘Tolerance’, which include sound bites and excerpts from news broadcasts relating to homophobia.
With the release of ‘Tolerance’, Majah P has broken new ground by taking on the cultural intolerance of a section of his native Jamaican society, and the LGBT rights debates in the halls of the US Congress.
Fans are encouraged to visit the artist on MySpace and Facebook. Sample tracks are available at cdbaby.com, itunes and independentdistro.com

FILM-MAKER FALLS IN LOVE WITH REGGAE STORY
|
|
|
|
source: The Gleaner
Bruce Gillies Sadeke Brooks, Staff Reporter
Building on a gripping and exciting story he was told by The Heptones, United States-based film-maker Bruce Wayne Gillies has embarked on a journey to make a fictional movie called 'Rude Boy.'
Speaking with The Sunday Gleaner, Gillies explained how the journey began. "I was given the story idea by The Heptones, who I met a few years back. We got talking and they gave me a great story about how reggae music came about. I researched it and found this amazing story that nobody knows about," Gillies said.
He explained that the movie is not a documentary but a fictional movie that will start in the 1960s. Nonetheless, it will showcase Jamaica's music styles like mento, ska and reggae. "It's a composite character that we drag through Trench Town, and becomes a big reggae rock star," Gillies said.
"It's all fictional. It relates to the period, but everything is different, kinda like a parallel universe. You will hear the music of the day, but you will not see them (artistes) perform it."
The main character, who will be called Winston Brown, will bring to life the stories of many Jamaican musicians like Bob Marley, Toots Hibbert, The Heptones and Don Drummond, whose musical roots began to grow in Trench Town.
We (will) start filming in January (2012), but there is a lot of work to do before then," he said.
Gillies said he will be in Jamaica in November to find locations for the film and hold an open audition to decide on the cast. Although there will be an audition in November, he said there is also an online audition process, where people can upload their videos.
The lead actor is yet to be decided, but Gillies said popular American actor Danny Glover has agreed to play a role. However, "I want to cast the whole movie out of Jamaica. I am not worried about movie stars. This is also very Jamaicacentric. Gillies said 10 original songs will have to be created for the lead character.
He also wants the film to be ready in time for the annual Cannes Film Festival that will held in France in May 2012.

THIRD WORLD HONORED AT MONTREAL INTERNATONAL REGGAE FESTIVAL
|
|
|
It is said that, "Dedication is not what others expect of you, it is what you can give to others." And it is in that "giving spirit" that Third World approaches each and every one of their shows. The group understands that their fans are key components of their success and so no matter the weather or circumstance, they will show up and show out. And this they did this past weekend at the Montreal International Reggae Festival.
In its 8th year, the Montreal International Reggae Festival boasts an impressive line-up of artists that has graced their stage. With the theme "United Against Violence," this year's line-up included Gyptian, Jahvinci, Wayne Wonder, Beres Hammond and Third World Band.
On Sunday, August 21, 2011, the view from the stage was not that of a sea of faces of anticipated fans, but rather the tops of umbrellas and rain coats. "It is always amazing to us what great lengths fans go through to come out and see us perform. And this is not something we take for granted," states Stephen "Cat" Coore. The rainy and windy weather was no match for the Reggae Ambassadors who kept the audience dancing the entire ninety minute set.
The Quays of The Old Port came alive when the band opened with Spirits Lives from their new album Patriots. They followed up with Sense of Purpose, 96 Degrees (Second Generation), Reggae Ambassadors, Now That We've Found Love, Try Jah Love, among others. Fans were delighted when the band paid homage to the late Gregory Isaacs, who is also featured on the group's album. As part of their tribute, the band performed Front Door and Rumors. And in honoring a musical legend, they were also honored.
The International Year for People of African Descent, in remembrance of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade and its abolition 23rd August, The Black Coalition of Quebec and the Round Table on Black History Month Presented an award to Third World Band for their outstanding contribution.
"We thank the Black Coalition of Quebec and the Round Table on Black History Month for the prestigious award. It is always a great feeling when we are not only recognized for the work that we do but also to know that our music has such a significant impact," remarked Richard Daley. www.thirdworldband.com

THE ITALS – TOURING THE WESTERN U.S. - SEPTEMBER 2011
|
|
|
|
Out of Savana La Mar, Jamaica, Keith Porter and Ronnie Davis are some of the hardest touring reggae artists in North America. These music messengers have the drive and perseverance to perform in some of the farthest North American outposts. For this sacrifice, they are greatly loved and respected by their fans near and far. Keith Porter’s father was a minister in Jamaica, and with these roots, Keith is bringing forth the message.
Known for their tight harmonies, and uplifting songs of glory, these reggae ambassadors have been touring fresh and strong since the early eighties. After many hard years on the road, they are still youthful and in good health. Keith Porter has proven himself to be one of the strongest men in the business. His endurance is remarkable. Keith “never gets weary”. The Itals are living samples of the “Rasta Philosophy”.
The Itals continue to champion the roots reggae sound they helped to create. The band got their start in the late 1960s when friends Alvin "Keith" Porter and Ronnie Davis, then known as the Westmorelites (named after Jamaica's Westmoreland parish), recorded the hit single "Hitey Titey" for Clement "Coxsone" Dodds' esteemed Studio One label. Porter and Davis crossed paths again in 1975 and recorded their classic "Ina Dis Ya Time" as the Itals, taking their name from the Jamaican patois word meaning natural - pure and unprocessed.
The Itals are recognized as one of reggae's premier "harmony groups." The diverse seaside community of Westmoreland, where Keith grew up, greatly influenced his laid-back singing style, and the righteous outlook on life often described in the Itals' music. In contrast to the violence and sexism that runs through some of dancehall's most popular tunes, the Itals' roots reggae sound remains to this day focused on positivity, love and harmony.
“Got to reveal, got to reveal. The truth that is hid, has got to reveal”, chant the Itals. “Sing farewell to my enemies. Sing farewell to my enemies – Alphas love is over me.” The Itals songs help us remember God and the Holy Spirit, and to count His many great blessings. Just for the gifts of sight and hearing, we could never be thankful enough. “Temptation is a thing trying to keep me away from Jah glory. I love, I love, I love - Jah glory.”
When the Itals hit the stage, Jah glory is in full effect.

MYSTIC SOUL : : ‘I Am The One’
|
|
‘I Am The One’ is an eclectic blend of organic, earthy lyrics and new-age roots reggae rhythms. Each of the 13 tracks strikes a resonant chord: whether it’s the poignant and nostalgic lyrics from the LyricSurge Records catalogue, the haunting melody lines, and the wrenching yet smooth vocals of the ‘New Now Next in Reggae’ artiste of 2011--Mystic Soul-- as he sings about love, desire, conscious living and nostalgia for authentic Jamaica.
One thing is certain: the synergy is unmistakably ‘wicked’ and is sure to send shockwaves throughout the entire music industry.
Mystic Soul grew up in Kingston, Jamaica in a community called Waterhouse; known for its rampant political violence and tough streets. It’s hard to imagine how Mystic Soul escaped the cycle of violence to become arguably one of the finest crooners coming out of Jamaica. How did this ghetto youth learned to extract these soothing notes from such a harsh environment?
It’s the journey that this album begins to tell. With songs like “Man fe Talk” and “Sufferation”, Mystic Soul decries the violence that plagues inner city youths, while on the title track “I Am The One” he shows the power of love and the willingness to bare his soul. Stay tuned as we continue to watch this rising talent, and unravel the mysteries behind this Mystic Soul.

various artists - Mi Sleng Teng : : Everything Old is New Again
|
|
It’s an old saying but it certainly applies to the artists and songs on this newly digitized release from King Jammy. Check out the master’s touch on ‘made to party’ tunes by Brian & Tony Gold, Dennis Brown, Admiral Bailey, Spanner Banner, Admiral Tibet, Courtney Melody, Wayne Smith, Gregory Isaacs, Glen Ricks, King Jammy, Nitty Gritty, Capleton, Spanner Banner, Pinchers, Ken Boothe and Horace Andy.
Love dub? He’s got it. The original Sleng Teng Riddim, which changed the sound of reggae for the whole of the 1980s? He’s got it. No matter what your musical tastes, there’s something in this album that’s a must-have for both true fans of the Jammy’s sound and those who have yet to discover it.
This is an album to play on a Saturday night when you have some friends over who want to have a good time. Or a Sunday afternoon when you just want to chill. Or in the middle of the week when you need a little ‘energizing’ to make it through the week.
So come on by Jammy’s’ cause there’s a party going on!

SUGA ROY - SUGA ROY & CONRAD CRYSTAL UNIVERSAL TRIBUTE TO GREGORY ISAACS:

|
 |
From Suga Roy:
I give thanks to Jah for inspiring me with this idea to do this album "Suga Roy And Conrad Crystal Universal Tribute To Gregory Isaacs” featuring Fantan Mojah and Luciano on separate tracks.
The album has tracks such as ‘Night Nurse’, ‘All I Have Is Love’,
‘Universal’, ‘Tune In’, ‘Hard Drugs’, ‘Border’ plus 12 more classic tracks. I respect Gregory very much as an icon of reggae music; he was one of the greatest singer/songwriter in culture and lovers rock reggae and was one of my idols since I was a youth.
I love his music so much that in 2004 I teamed up with Conrad Crystal to do a remake of the Gregory classic ‘Love Overdue’ and that remake was a success for me and Conrad Crystal; everywhere we performed it, people loved it.
In 2006 I did a remake of ‘Soon Forward’ with Gregory Isaacs himself! It was a great experience for me to work with him as one of the great living icons at that time.
This new album is produced by Leroy ‘Suga Roy’ More for Fire Ball Records label. I want everyone to support this album.
