GHANA: KENTE TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM
|
|
|
KENTE, Ghana’s sometimes rootsy, sometimes afro pop reggae band, return onto the music scene after a long absence with a brand new single and video titled Rasta Nye Abodam.
The track - a very lively dancehall version of the Mission Impossible soundtrack - has a highly charged political message about Rasta and urgent solutions to problems facing the ghetto youth today.
The refrain “we run things, things don’t run we” is an anthem for ghetto youth all over the world, and it shows KENTE is still in touch with their original grassroots following, despite acquiring a glitzy, urbane look in the video, with lead singer Fred Dred sometimes looking like a secret service operative, suit and dark glasses and all. The video is very exciting and can be seen at www.youtube.com/kenteband.
KENTE is conscious, stylish and reggae biased, and above all KENTE has evolved to weave our aspirations into a pattern that music lovers, social commentators and indeed the general public will find most fulfilling, pleasurable and uplifting.

JAMAICA CURRY FESTIVAL LANDS DIGICEL
|
|
|
|
The Jamaica Curry Festival, slated for Sunday, October 16 (Heroes weekend) at the Richmond Estate in Priory, St. Ann has been given a massive boost with mobile powerhouse Digicel signing on as lead sponsor.
Camille Miller, the festival's marketing manager, said having a partner of the caliber of Digicel “is a huge lift for community initiatives such as the Jamaica Curry Festival.”
"Having Digicel on board as lead sponsor speaks volume for this event,” Ms. Miller said. She added that the festival’s organizing team was now even more “pumped up” to deliver a first class event, considering “it has now taken on an even bigger flavor.” “The way things are shaping up there is every reason to believe we have something special on our hands," Ms. Miller said. "Our chefs will be preparing some of the finest and some of the most unusual curry dishes seen anywhere in the world.”
The Jamaica Curry Festival joins a number of food festivals held across Jamaica annually. Festivals such as the Ocho Rios Seafood Festival, the Portland Jerk Festival, Little Ochi Seafood Carnival and the Port Royal Seafood Festival have enjoyed cult like following, lending credence to the belief that food festivals have eclipsed the traditional stage/dancehall shows as the events of choice for patrons.
"This is the second year of our sponsorship and we're again delighted to be main sponsor of the Jamaica Curry Festival because of the community spirit that it represents," said Digicel senior sponsorship manager Shelly-Ann Curran. "This is a family event, and something that Digicel really values - family development. It's also an opportunity for us to connect with our customers."
Ms. Miller added that although St. Ann remains the host parish for the second straight year, the plan is for the Jamaica Curry Festival to be moved to different parts of the island annually.
“Curry is arguably the most popular spice/dish in the island,” she said. “It is such a natural draw that we expect to have a huge following wherever we go. The ultimate goal however is to take it overseas, possibly even to the London Olympic games in 2012.”
Meanwhile, in addition to Digicel, a growing number of other companies have thrown their hats in the ring as sponsors. Also on board are: Grizzly's Entertainment, the RJR Communications Group, Red Bull, IRIE FM, Mystic Mountain, Dolphin Cove and Tropical Vibes Seafood Restaurant. Tourism Minister Ed Bartlett said his ministry will continue to support the community tourism concept of "empowering communities to create income generating events." There is also an impressive line-up of performers which include: Ity and Fancy Cat, Bounty Killer, Christopher Martin, Romain Virgo, Zamunda, Stacious and Khago. As a prelude to the festival, there will be a press launch and 'red carpet' event on Saturday, October 1 from 3:00 p.m. -8:00 p.m. at the Richmond Estate, just outside of Priory in St. Ann. The launch will feature signature culinary creations from top local chefs from St. Ann and neighbouring communities, and also live entertainment.
Part proceeds from the Jamaica Curry Festival will be donated to the St. Ann Infirmary and also the Windsor Girls' Home in St. Ann's Bay.
"It is our hope that the festival will find its place on Jamaica's culinary calendar in the future, and also enhances the country's reputation as a premiere food destination," Ms. Miller added."

JAMAICA PHONE APPS, THE NEXT CULTURAL EXPORT
|
|
|
The RealVibez phone app is targeted to an international audience interested in Reggae, Dancehall and Soca music. KINGSTON, Jamaica, Thursday September 22, 2011 – A team of four Jamaicans based in the United States have had its Real-Vibez mobile application added to the line-up of application downloads offered by multi-media retail giant Apple.
iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad users around the world can now download the free Real-Vibez mobile application by the Jamaican entrepreneurs that gives the user the inside track on Caribbean entertainment from the App Store.
Co-founders of Random Media, brothers David and Robert Mullings handled content and monetization, Kathryn Mullings, the wife of David and the chief creative officer of Kaizen Interactive handled graphics and Dominic Powell, a close family friend and technology consultant handled technology partnerships.
David Mullings is serving as a judge for the upcoming BlackBerry App Developers competition being run by the Ministry of Education and Department of Information and Telecommunication in Jamaica.
The competition, which was originally slated to complete in August, has had its submission deadline pushed back to November 18, with the awards ceremony now to be held on December 2. The Ministry of Education explained that the contest was devised to boost students’ understanding of technology and improve their utilisation of technological innovations through the development of mobile applications for either the BlackBerry smartphone or the BlackBerry Playbook and the deadline was extended in response to requests from schools for more time to fully develop their applications.
“We have always believed in the idea of globalization of the local as explained by Thomas Friedman in his book The World is Flat. Like the web, mobile applications allow us to be instantly international and help expose quality Caribbean entertainment to the world,” said Mullings
The RealVibez phone app is targeted to an international audience interested in Reggae, Dancehall and Soca music. It is similar to the Fader magazine app and is updated at least monthly with new music, videos, news, show dates and other content.
While it is currently on iPhone, android and BlackBerry versions of the RealVibez app will be released in the next few months, the developers stated.
"The app was actually an idea Dominic brought to us a few months ago" said Robert Mullings. "He has been around us and supporting RealVibez since the website first launched in February 2002 and he felt that it would be a good fit" Mullings continued. "If education allows for greater imagination, then technology has allowed us to create the unimaginable," said Powell.
Random Media was approved earlier this year as an Apple iOS developer and Kaizen Interactive handled the actual app creation. The team already has been approached by a prominent dancehall artiste to build a similar app for him as well.
Revenue mainly comes from Apple placing advertisements in the app and sharing revenue with Random Media. Other revenue channels include entertainers paying to list upcoming performance dates and getting approved content featured. The app currently features the song “Here We Go” by Wayne Marshall and Sean Paul.

ERNIE SMITH - JAMAICA’S CULTURAL AMBASSADOR
Iconic Reggae singer Ernie Smith has been waving Jamaica’s flag very high the past couple of months, with performances and guest appearance at cultural celebrations in North America. Performing at Jamaica Day in Canada, Jamaica’s Independence Day in New York, and Emancipation Day in Jamaica, Smith proves to be one of Jamaica’s most enthusiastic cultural ambassadors.
In addition to his Jamaica Day performance, Smith did a two week tour of Canada, playing clubs and festivals throughout the country, before shooting down to New York for the August 6th Jamaica Independence festival in Brooklyn. This coming weekend, Smith will be on the West Coast with a performance in Los Angeles.
Since the beginning of his career in the late 1960s, Ernie has penned over 200 songs, several of which have been recorded by other artists, including Goldie Hawn, Johnny Nash, Rita Marley, Chakka Demus & Pliers, Sanchez, Twiggy, Eddie Lovett, Yellowman, famed gospel group Grace Thrillers and others. He has made an indelible mark on Jamaican music with Reggae classics “Bend Down,” “Ride On Sammy,” “One Dream,” “Pitta Patta,” and “Duppy Gunman.” In 1972, he beat songwriters Neil Sedaka and Michael Legrand, to win the Grand Prize at the World Popular Song Festival in Tokyo, and became the first Jamaican musician to win an international music award.
Ernie has hit many of the world’s greatest stages including repeat performances at New York City’s iconic Madison Square Garden. His anthology After 30 Years: Life is Just for Living was published in 1997. His latest album Country Mile was released in 2010 and features popular IRIE FM radio DJ Ron Machete, and veteran performer Pluto Shervington. In June, Ernie released the humorous single “Nutten A Guh Come Outta Dat.”
Junior Kelly:
AFTER A SUCCESSFUL EUROPEAN TOUR, JUNIOR KELLY SETS HIS SIGHTS ON THE UNITED STATES
Root Reggae champion Junior Kelly spent much of the summer blazing a trail across Europe with powerful performances at the Chiemsee Reggae Festival in Germany, and the Sudoeste Festival in Portugal, where he shared the stage with American superstars Snoop Dogg and Kanye West, as well as roots legends Alpha Blondy, and Inner Circle. Kelly also gave rousing performances at the Garance Reggae Festival in France, Ruhr Festival in Germany, and the Oland Roots Festival in Sweden. The hectic tour also included club dates in Italy, Amsterdam, Denmark, and Slovenia.
After much success in Europe, Junior Kelly is eager to blaze a trail across the United States of America this fall. The well-seasoned and powerful performer was sorely missed at summer festivals throughout the United States, and is now set to give American Reggae music lovers precisely what they’ve been demanding.
Keith ‘Junior Kelly’ Morgan has spent the past decade touring the world as one of roots Reggae’s strongest acts. His breakthrough single “Love So Nice”established him as a bonafide star in 2000. His commanding juxtaposition of precisely timed, deejayed rhymes and melodic singing, coupled with his vivid storytelling abilities, took the song to #1 on the Jamaican charts. “Love So Nice” spent 15 weeks at the top, making it the island’s longest charting number one single for 2000.
The album Love So Nice, released in 2001, also spawned the well-received singles“Sunshine,” “Boom Draw” and the biting social commentary “Hungry Days,” which brought him recognition throughout the Caribbean, North America, and Europe. Kelly followed up Love So Nice, with Juvenille (2002), Conscious Voice (2002), Smile(2003), Bless (2003), and Tough Life (2005), His latest album, Red Pond (2010) features the lilting lovers rock tune “Too Late” with Queen Ifrica, “Murderer,” a ferocious admonishment of gun violence, and “African Child” which was partially inspired by Kelly’s unforgettable visit to Haiti.
Earlier this year, Junior Kelly released the critically acclaimed single “Mister Mighty,” which is currently in rotation on stations around the globe. www.reverbnation.com/juniorkelly

CHUCK FENDA, I-WAYNE & THE GUMPTION BAND - AVAILABLE ON TOUR IN NORTH AMERICA - JANUARY/ FEBRUARY 2012
|
|
|
Two of the more crucial hardcore roots reggae artists coming up in the international reggae arena are Chuck Fenda and I-Wayne. Both of these young Jamaican talents are currently in great demand worldwide. Opening for them and backing them is the heavyweight Jamaican band Gumption, with Junior Jazz on guitar and lead vocals, Phonso on drums, Duke on keys and Isaih on bass. Gumption has backed Beres Hammond, Romain Virgo, Judy Mowatt, Horace Andy, Tony Rebel and Queen Ifrica, I-Octane, Gyptian and almost every other top reggae artist.
There is immediately great interest and excitement about this massive January / February North American tour package.
In 2004 I-Wayne got his first number one hit song with his single "Can't Satisfy Her", which was also the first reggae track by a cultural reggae artist to be added to the Hot 97 play-list. This song spent over 22 weeks on the Billboard Hip Hop/R&B Hot 100 Chart. Shortly thereafter came another big hit song from I-Wayne - “Living in Love”. These songs propelled this young artist to the front of the reggae pack performing on many major festivals all over the world.
I-Wayne’s debut album, Lava Ground that featured these two hit songs was praised for returning to reggae's "essential roots". In 2007 his second album Book of Life was released and this release again propelled him to the top of the Billboard Charts.
I-Wayne is a favorite artist for many of the more roots conscious oriented listeners. His is very smooth listening music with uplifting messages.
Chuck Fenda has proven that he carries the title of “the Poor People Defenda” with songs like “Life Ruff Out Deh”, “I Swear”, “Haffi Win”, “Respect Mama”, “Gash Dem and Light Dem” and “Are You Coming Over Tonight” with Cherine Anderson. Chuck Fenda is currently blazing the airwaves with his hit “Real Man” and his hot new singles “Treat Her Right,” “Didn’t I tell you“, “Call On Me” with Cherine Anderson and “Warning” with Notice Production.
All together this January / February tour package carries a long lasting high quality show that U.S. reggae enthusiasts will not want to miss.

TADDY P : : TADDY P - GIMMIE DI BASS
|
|
Taddy P has emerged as one of the most creative musicians, writers and producers out of Jamaica. His diverse life experiences manifest themselves in his music, which combines roots reggae riddims & a compelling message with bluesy melodies, rock overdubs & a consistent soulful vibe. “He is helping to define a progressive new sound for reggae, a style that incorporates outside influences but maintains an authentic Jamaican foundation.” said Tomas Palermo. Gimme Di Bass, his sophomore album features collaborations with multiple Grammy nominees Maxi Priest and Bunny Rugs of Third World Band fame as well as the only Diamond awarded dancehall artist & 2 time Reggae Grammy winner Shaggy.
The album opens with Play for Me, a light hearted intro with a hypnotic beat, before Shaggy, Red Fox & Chevaughn assist Taddy P to hit you heavy with Let’s Get it Started. Jamaica’s Reggae songstress Tanya Stephens ramps the vibe up even higher with Heart of Stone, an ironic take on relationships alongside an irresistible bass line. Next up, the Teddy Pendergrass mega soul hit Come Go With Me blends a lovers rock arrangement with the fresh new voice of Evin Lake creating a new track that sounds like it was meant to be. Singer/songwriter Rik Rok adds a gorgeous touch of special to the largely instrumental tribute to Michael Jackson with, Lady in My Life , as well an original ballad, Will This Love Survive. That bass line reels you in again with Embrace Love, before Maxi Priest shines on the lovers rocks track Too Busy, as does Bunny Rugs of the legendary Third World Band on Monday Morning Blues. The title track is a standout, as Beniton asks Taddy to Gimme Di Bass, followed by Leave the Crumbs Alone with Mackie Conscious. God Is, not surprisingly, has a gospel feel before the album is rounded out by two dub versions. The set closes with Dean Stephen’s mellow ode to Mama.

If you wish, and we really wish you wouldn't, like to be removed from this list, please reply with REMOVE in subject line.
It will make us very sad if you do, and perhaps your removal will be the one the makes us decide this no longer worth doing at all, and all the information we provide will go away forever and musicians will sit home alone at night and cry because they have no one to play for because no one knows about their shows. Your callÂ…..
