Closing Chant

We end each class with the following intention.

Lo kaah Sama staah Suk hino Bhavan tu

May the entire universe be ever filled with Peace, Joy, Love, and Light.

According to this translation from Integral Yoga, Sri Swami Satchidananda explained like this, "If through these Yoga practices you have been able to tap into your own true nature and tasted the peace and bliss there, then you don't just 'hoard' it all for yourself but you release some to share for the rest of the world." Through our interconnectedness, when we practice Yoga, we benefit ourselves and all beings everywhere.

Yoga for MS training update

Hurrican Irene interrupted the training in Warwick, RI in August.  The weather was great on Friday and Saturday, but Sunday...well we had to postpone that to a month later.  We completed the training a few weeks ago and now there are a few more teachers who will be teaching adaptive yoga in RI, MA, NY and Alabama.  How great is that!

Thought for This Day

Adopt the pace of nature, her secret is patience.

~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Nature, Part 2 by Emily Dickinson

NATURE, the gentlest mother,

Impatient of no child,

The feeblest or the waywardest,—

Her admonition mild

In forest and the hill

By traveller is heard,

Restraining rampant squirrel

Or too impetuous bird.

How fair her conversation,

A summer afternoon,—

Her household, her assembly;

And when the sun goes down

Her voice among the aisles

Incites the timid prayer

Of the minutest cricket,

The most unworthy flower.

When all the children sleep

She turns as long away

As will suffice to light her lamps;

Then, bending from the sky,

With infinite affection

And infiniter care,

Her golden finger on her lip,

Wills silence everywhere.

Message from Karen

Dear Friends,

In mid-September we spent a few days in the Adirondacks, hiking and enjoying the great weather and scenery.  Some of that scenery was devastated by Hurricane Irene.  Hard to believe that a hurricane could do that much damage hundreds of miles away from the shore.  Many of the hiking trails were closed, especially in a town named Keene, because of massive tree damage.  Maybe you saw some of that in the news.  Huge trees uprooted and driving down flooded rivers, tearing up everything it their path.  We saw some of the aftermath.

And we saw total serenity.  Clear, still waters on lakes.  Beautiful hikes with waterfalls, and too many mountains to count - although the number 46 comes to mind.  46 high peaks in the Adirondacks.  Plan a trip.  It's worth it!

Remembering our soldiers - At the end of a yoga class we share the closing chant, remembering all those who are in need of healing.  Recently I asked the class to remember our soldiers, especially the young men and women who are barely in their 20s, who are putting themselves in danger every day.  I was selfishly remembering my nephews, brothers, who are both in Afganistan.  Ages 21 and 24.  It was then that a student shared that her son, also age 21, is serving in the same area as one of my nephews.  I didn't know.  How many others that we know have children, parents, partners or siblings serving and yet we are unaware?

How many of us are aware of the war in a personal way?  Do we go about our daily lives with a vague awareness or something more than that?  If we don't have family who are serving, how much do we care?  Are we paying attention?  No matter what each of us may think about the current state of our military involvement, or any military involvement, families are paying the price in so many ways.

If you know of someone who is serving, consider getting their mailing address and send a card, or magazines, or baby wipes.  I learned that my nephews love peanut butter, vacuum sealed tuna, and healthy snacks.  And letters from home.  And when they come home, "Welcome Home!"

Do your yoga.  Do it for yourself.  Do it for the ones who love you.  "Through our interconnectedness, when we practice Yoga, we benefit ourselves and all beings everywhere."  Changing the world one person at a time through your practice.  Next week I'll be going to the Kripalu Yoga Teachers 20th Annual Conference.  I am so excited to reconnect with friends, to learn new things and to reignite my inner fire.  And I'll be bringing back to you.

See you on the mat!  Om shanti, Karen

What is the Difference Between Yoga and Therapeutic Yoga?

All yoga is therapeutic. However, therapeutic yoga is yoga with a specific focus. All postures and practices are customized to each individual’s ability and comfort and the focus is on the health and wellness of the individual at all levels - physical, psychological and spiritual.

WHAT IS A THERAPEUTIC YOGA CLASS LIKE?

Classes combine a variety of yoga postures, breathing, guided imagery, deep relaxation and meditation to help reduce physical, mental and emotional stress. In a therapeutic yoga class, postures are important but guided imagery, deep relaxation and meditation are just as important in helping students reach a relaxed state of awareness, which reduces stress levels and leads to increased feelings of mental clarity, and well-being. Modifications are offered and all students are encouraged to participate at their own level of ability and comfort. A therapeutic yoga class is typically 90 minutes in length.

WHAT IS A PRIVATE THERAPEUTIC YOGA SESSION LIKE?

Private sessions are based on a therapeutic model developed by Joseph LePage, founder of Integrative Yoga Therapy and are typically 90 minutes in length. Like therapeutic yoga classes, private sessions include a variety of yoga postures, breathing, guided imagery, deep relaxation and meditation based on the needs of the individual. One difference between a class and a private session is the amount of time spent on the Intake and Feedback process. Because each session is dedicated to one person, there is ample time for the yoga teacher to listen carefully to what the client wants and needs and then address those wants and needs in the sessions.
