REGGAE ON THE CREEK FOR TANZANIA
|
|
CHARLESTON, SC - The Reggae on the Creek party and benefit show in Mt. Pleasant is an annual autumn highlight for local music fans. Already in it's fifth year, the festivities are set for Sun. Oct. 16 at Vickery’s Bar and Grill on Shem Creek (1313 Shrimpboat Lane).
Hosted by the Tanzanian Education Foundation, the party will feature live reggae and funk on the dock by local ensemble Dub Island and the Dubplates and special guests. Vickery’s will offer specials on Red Stripe and Sweetwater beer, rum drinks, and Caribbean dishes from noon until dark.
The nonprofit foundation provides the children of Tanzania an opportunity to receive a proper education and a chance to overcome poverty. Local volunteers Nicole Miller and Erica Oblinger are among several Charlestonians who’s traveled to Tanzania and worked locally to raise funds and awareness for the organization.
A donation of $5 is requested at the door. Proceeds from Reggae on the Creek will go toward providing educational scholarships to the children of Meru View Day School in Arusha. A shuttle service from K-Mart on Highway 17 is available for those looking for extra parking.

DANCEHALL CULTURE EMBRACES VIOLENT LYRICS OVER POSITIVE ONES
|
|
|
|
Many people are not familiar with the name Zebidee, for one reason and one reason only; he refuses to continue singing gun tunes.
Like many other dancehall artists, Zebidee started out doing nothing but gun music. His fame quickly spread in the streets, which resulted in him being invited to perform at several functions, and stage shows in his hometown of St. Elizabeth. As word started to leak into neighboring parishes, Zebidee began to realize the impact his songs were having on the youths. It was then that he decided to stop creating music that glorifies violence and weapons and began singing both culture and love songs.
Shortly after he changed his rhetoric, the promoters and producers that were interested in him began to drift away and the momentum that was building around his name slowly faded. Having a tenacious spirit, Zebidee committed himself to both his career and his new style of writing, which would focus on, clean culture and love songs.
Zebidee’s story is by no means unique. There are quite a few artists who share similar experience. Unfortunately, many have surrendered to the negative trappings of the industry. Zebidee on the other hand has risen above it.

|
|
Jamaican media reported early Tuesday that reggae star Adidja “Vybz Kartel” Palmer had been charged for conspiring to murder a 27-year-old promoter earlier this year.
The Jamaica Observer quoted a police news release which said “The allegation is that on Monday, July 11, 2011, Palmer, along with other men, conspired to murder Barrington Burton o/c ‘Bossie’, a 27-year-old businessman/promoter of a Gregory Park address in St. Catherine. Burton was murdered while he was standing with friends along Walkers Avenue in Gregory Park.”
Palmer was taken into custody on Friday facing conspiracy to murder and illegal possession of a firearm charges.
Police searched several residences on Friday which Palmer was known to frequent including some of his hang-outs, BET reported. Some marijuana was found in one of the homes and three of Palmer’s associates were subsequently charged, police said.

BLAENAU FFESTINIOG REGGAE FESTIVAL PROVES A BIG HIT!
|
|
|
|
A NEW reggae festival held in the imposing surroundings of Blaenau Ffestiniog’s Llechwedd Slate Caverns has been hailed as a “massive success”.
The DrumHouseFFEST brought a distinctly Caribbean vibe to a sun kissed Blaenau Ffestiniog on Saturday, as crowds flocked to the historic surroundings of Llechwedd to enjoy 13 hours of music from some of the biggest names in reggae, dub and ska.
Festival organiser Rhys Roberts told the Herald: “My legs are still tired from all the running round I did, but it was a great success, especially for what was our debut festival.
“We are hoping it will now grow and grow, and are planning on holding the next festival in April, which should coincide with the opening of Antur Stiniog’s multi-million pound mountain bike trails.
“I’ve had some great feedback from the artists, who all loved the location, the crowd and the hospitality, and the festival goers themselves had a great time.
“Thanks to everyone who came and supported us. We’ll now be working with the Gwynedd Events group and the police to ensure next year’s event is even better, and we’ll be looking to provide camping for the festival goers.”
Antur Stiniog’s Ceri Cunnington added: “It was a great festival, and ticked all the boxes when celebrating Blaenau’s culture, music and sport – with a great mountain biking display.
“We now move on to the next stage in our ambitious plans for the area, with work having already started on parts of the mountain bike trails.”

ERNIE SMITH - JAMAICA’S CULTURAL AMBASSADOR
Iconic Reggae singer Ernie Smith has been waving Jamaica’s flag very high the past couple of months, with performances and guest appearance at cultural celebrations in North America. Performing at Jamaica Day in Canada, Jamaica’s Independence Day in New York, and Emancipation Day in Jamaica, Smith proves to be one of Jamaica’s most enthusiastic cultural ambassadors.
In addition to his Jamaica Day performance, Smith did a two week tour of Canada, playing clubs and festivals throughout the country, before shooting down to New York for the August 6th Jamaica Independence festival in Brooklyn. This coming weekend, Smith will be on the West Coast with a performance in Los Angeles.
Since the beginning of his career in the late 1960s, Ernie has penned over 200 songs, several of which have been recorded by other artists, including Goldie Hawn, Johnny Nash, Rita Marley, Chakka Demus & Pliers, Sanchez, Twiggy, Eddie Lovett, Yellowman, famed gospel group Grace Thrillers and others. He has made an indelible mark on Jamaican music with Reggae classics “Bend Down,” “Ride On Sammy,” “One Dream,” “Pitta Patta,” and “Duppy Gunman.” In 1972, he beat songwriters Neil Sedaka and Michael Legrand, to win the Grand Prize at the World Popular Song Festival in Tokyo, and became the first Jamaican musician to win an international music award.
Ernie has hit many of the world’s greatest stages including repeat performances at New York City’s iconic Madison Square Garden. His anthology After 30 Years: Life is Just for Living was published in 1997. His latest album Country Mile was released in 2010 and features popular IRIE FM radio DJ Ron Machete, and veteran performer Pluto Shervington. In June, Ernie released the humorous single “Nutten A Guh Come Outta Dat.”
Junior Kelly:
AFTER A SUCCESSFUL EUROPEAN TOUR, JUNIOR KELLY SETS HIS SIGHTS ON THE UNITED STATES
Root Reggae champion Junior Kelly spent much of the summer blazing a trail across Europe with powerful performances at the Chiemsee Reggae Festival in Germany, and the Sudoeste Festival in Portugal, where he shared the stage with American superstars Snoop Dogg and Kanye West, as well as roots legends Alpha Blondy, and Inner Circle. Kelly also gave rousing performances at the Garance Reggae Festival in France, Ruhr Festival in Germany, and the Oland Roots Festival in Sweden. The hectic tour also included club dates in Italy, Amsterdam, Denmark, and Slovenia.
After much success in Europe, Junior Kelly is eager to blaze a trail across the United States of America this fall. The well-seasoned and powerful performer was sorely missed at summer festivals throughout the United States, and is now set to give American Reggae music lovers precisely what they’ve been demanding.
Keith ‘Junior Kelly’ Morgan has spent the past decade touring the world as one of roots Reggae’s strongest acts. His breakthrough single “Love So Nice”established him as a bonafide star in 2000. His commanding juxtaposition of precisely timed, deejayed rhymes and melodic singing, coupled with his vivid storytelling abilities, took the song to #1 on the Jamaican charts. “Love So Nice” spent 15 weeks at the top, making it the island’s longest charting number one single for 2000.
The album Love So Nice, released in 2001, also spawned the well-received singles“Sunshine,” “Boom Draw” and the biting social commentary “Hungry Days,” which brought him recognition throughout the Caribbean, North America, and Europe. Kelly followed up Love So Nice, with Juvenille (2002), Conscious Voice (2002), Smile(2003), Bless (2003), and Tough Life (2005), His latest album, Red Pond (2010) features the lilting lovers rock tune “Too Late” with Queen Ifrica, “Murderer,” a ferocious admonishment of gun violence, and “African Child” which was partially inspired by Kelly’s unforgettable visit to Haiti.
Earlier this year, Junior Kelly released the critically acclaimed single “Mister Mighty,” which is currently in rotation on stations around the globe. www.reverbnation.com/juniorkelly

FEEDING AFRICA - REGGAE ARTISTE SEEKS DIFFERENT REWARDS FROM HIS MUSIC
|
|
|
International reggae artiste Kwabena Nip plans to feed Africa. The Jamaica-born singer said he left Jamaica at a young age and has been on a spiritual journey, taking up residence in several countries in the process. It was as a result of one of his sojourns that he became passionate about the African continent.
"I was born in Jamaica but I have spent periods of my life in Gambia, Ghana, England, anywhere the music takes me, so I would say I live nowhere, I am an all-rounder," he said.
According to the artiste, he doesn't do music to become rich, but to contribute to a greater cause, which is to empower Jamaicans and the people of Africa.
"I look into Africa and the things I see in the east, with hunger, skinny babies and suffering have made me aware that money is not the thing, but spirituality and kindness," he said.
The spirituality and kindness that Kwabena Nip speaks of is represented in his latest song dedicated to Africa and the African diaspora.
The song is called Bloody River, and represents what can be defined as a musical revolution.
"Let us rob those sons of a riches and give it to the poor always pressuring, asking us for more while the children are crying, mama bawling out for more," sings the artiste who describes himself as a lyrical messenger.
Kwabena Nip says he wants to facilitate African consciousness, and Jamaica provides the perfect platform to do so.

|
Barbados’s David Kirton packs up his guitar and travels with the changing seasons, this time the acclaimed Modern Roots Reggae singer songwriter finds him self a welcome base on the college circuit.
Recently Kirton formed an alliance with Degy Entertainment, an established New Jersey based College Booking Agency who specializes in pairing performing songwriters with Campuses and Armed Forces bases. Kirton continues to expand his original modern roots reggae sound preparing for the release of his fourth album in 2012. His music creates a vibe and energy that reflects the culture and heritage of his homeland mixed with his modern travelers views and adopted international sounds. SIMBA AMANI : :
|
|
Simba Amani hailing out of the twin island of Trinidad & Tobago is a young talented music artiste. After the recent launch of his first official music video he’s been gaining popularity on the music scene on a daily basis.
This video, for his song “Hold my peace” can be seen on Synergy Tv and several internet websites, and continues to spread daily. Simba, who resides in Trincity, has recently completed his course of study at the University of The West Indies, attaining his first degree and has since dedicated himself to his music full time.
The singer/songwriter recorded his first track in 2009 and for two years has managed to accomplish quite a lot with the sole support of a few close friends and family members. Making quite a name for himself, opening for several renowned stars like Jr Gong, Nas and Jah Cure to name a few, Simba is turning up the air waves and on the road to a promising and bright music career.
Now after signing a management deal with Schizophrenic Entertainment in July of this year, Simba’s game has been given the extra push needed and is constantly working on more projects. “Currently, I am working with a variety of local and foreign producers each with a different brand of music....although I started up singing mostly Reggae, I feel the need to truly express my versatility and my many moods which would be brought about with the different genres.”
The rising star is about to launch more songs including “She knows” amongst others. Different from "Hold My Peace" a Reggae single that has gotten him more into the spotlight and so far as being called the local ‘Jah Cure’. Simba would now leave others wondering what to call him as he releases this brand new dancehall track.
This new track really shows the young artiste's versatility as he makes out the girls who know exactly what they do to guys and was written by Simba himself. Simba expressed his plans of giving back to society.
Already with a number of great releases under his belt (Hello, All I Need, Let Jah Be Your Best Friend), both locally and internationally - having stretched his paws as far as Tanzania and Colombia- the young Lion says he's not stopping there. When asked of what more he has in store in the near future and beyond, he simply smiles and affirms that the only thing to expect from Simba Amani is the unexpected.

SUGA ROY - SUGA ROY & CONRAD CRYSTAL :UNIVERSAL TRIBUTE TO GREGORY ISAACS

|
|
From Suga Roy:
I give thanks to Jah for inspiring me with this idea to do this album "Suga Roy And Conrad Crystal Universal Tribute To Gregory Isaacs” featuring Fantan Mojah and Luciano on separate tracks.
The album has tracks such as ‘Night Nurse’, ‘All I Have Is Love’,
‘Universal’, ‘Tune In’, ‘Hard Drugs’, ‘Border’ plus 12 more classic tracks. I respect Gregory very much as an icon of reggae music; he was one of the greatest singer/songwriter in culture and lovers rock reggae and was one of my idols since I was a youth.
I love his music so much that in 2004 I teamed up with Conrad Crystal to do a remake of the Gregory classic ‘Love Overdue’ and that remake was a success for me and Conrad Crystal; everywhere we performed it, people loved it.
In 2006 I did a remake of ‘Soon Forward’ with Gregory Isaacs himself! It was a great experience for me to work with him as one of the great living icons at that time.
This new album is produced by Leroy ‘Suga Roy’ More for Fire Ball Records label. I want everyone to support this album.

If you wish, and we really wish you wouldn't, like to be removed from this list, please reply with REMOVE in subject line.
It will make us very sad if you do, and perhaps your removal will be the one the makes us decide this no longer worth doing at all, and all the information we provide will go away forever and musicians will sit home alone at night and cry because they have no one to play for because no one knows about their shows. Your call
