THE GREEN’S WAYS & MEANS, THE NUMBER ONE REGGAE ALBUM IN AMERICA!
|
|
|
In little over a year the scene-shaking reggae band The Green has emerged as one of the most exciting new Reggae artists from the U.S. Both critics and fans quickly took hold of their youth-infused modern roots reggae sound. Their self-titled debut album was named “Best Reggae Album” of 2010 by iTunes and hit Billboard’s 2010 Year-End Reggae Chart by selling over 20,000 copies and counting.
The band’s sophomore album is Ways & Means, which spent the past week since release at #1 on the iTunes Reggae album chart. It’s come out in partnership with Easy Star Records, one of the leading independent reggae labels and home to some of the most accomplished and progressive reggae artists, including the Easy Star All-Stars, John Brown’s Body, Cas Haley, The Black Seeds, Ticklah, Tommy T, The Meditations, and more.
Some early press:
"The Green are completely different to how you may expect reggae music to sound....The Green have revolutionized the reggae genre and made it exciting for the first time in a long time." - Altsounds
"What they've emerged with is a great, highly listenable record that's as contemporary as Rebelution or Easy Star All-Stars, yet which harkens back to the sweet harmonies of classic Jamaican artists like The Heptones." - The Santa Barbara Independent
"No matter what; you'll be feeling the vibe to this mature masterpiece." - Earmilk
"You don't have to be from Jamaica to make righteous reggae music, as these rising stars of the genre prove. They're from Hawaii and they're really shaking things up with their youth-infused rootsy reggae sound."
- Sacramento Bee
"The Green's latest effort points to a band growing into their newfound success quite comfortably, as they've tweaked their sound to be sharper, more focused, and certainly a bit more ferocious." - The Pier
"The pop hooks and clever looks make The Green stand-out among the reggae roster of the world. Ways & Means is the best new music to be released in the reggae genre this year!" – Inside World Music
“The Green, a young Hawaiian outfit that nailed the nuances of roots and pop reggae with strong songwriting, solid riddims and rich singing marking them as one of the very best reggae acts...They haven’t dropped so much as a notch in quality; in fact, Ways & Means is better than its predecessor.” – Nice Up

The countdown is on for the 7th annual staging of Reggae Culture Salute. All roads lead to Nazareth Performance Center, Brooklyn, New York on Saturday, November 5th for the annual celebration of the anniversary of the coronation of His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie I and Empress Menen of Ethiopia and the unique relationship between rasta, reggae, Selassie and Jamaica.
For 2011, the Coalition to Preserve Reggae Music (CPR) salutes the future of roots reggae by presenting Dubtonic Kru, Global Battle of the Bands Champion for 2010-2011. For many, their historic win earlier this year in Malaysia where they prevailed over more than 4,000 other bands made them the "Usain Bolt" of roots reggae music. Dubtonic Kru will be the first recipient of CPR's newly established Simba (young lion) Award in honor of their dedication to the tradition of roots reggae music.
Another young lion making an appearance at Reggae Culture Salute 2011 is cultural artist, IWayne who debuted at #5 on the Billboard Reggae Chart with his recent release “Life Teachings” on VP Records. IWayne has consistently penned and performed uplifting roots reggae music for his fans the world over. Big Youth who received congressional honors at last year's Reggae Culture Salute is back by popular demand after last year's exhilarating performance and will receive CPR’s 2011 Pinnacle Award for Excellence for his more than 40 years of being a pioneer in the industry.
Junior "Gabu" Wedderburn with his Ancient Vibration ensemble of traditional nyahbinghi drummers and dancers also returns to captivate and enlighten the audience.

The video which was directed by seasoned Videographer Asha McHail of Fareye Films who's portfolio includes videos for I Octane, Etana and Alaine tells a story of a man being released from prison and reuniting with his family. Shot on several locations across Kingston the two day shoot captured the message of "Collide", a song which for Melody holds a double meaning.

CHA1201 *SYLFORD WALKER White Collar Criminals / MCPULLISH Dub of Correction
Occupy Your Stereo with 2 fresh new tunes from roots veteran Sylford Walker and young dub jedi McPullish. Sylford voices the frustrations of the majority and those suffering in poverty, calling out white collar criminals who work behind the scenes, letting everyone know business people in suits, unseen and hidden from the public, can be just as dangerous as a violent street criminal with a gun or machete. This timely one drop song has had a strong response from soundsystems, live audiences and radio selectors worldwide and we hope it reaches a wider audience in these times of political unrest and rampant corruption.
The extended dub version (*Dub of Correction*) finds Sylford's message and the sparse rhythm ricocheting off the walls of Babylon and across the universe in dub.
CHA14 *MELTED SPEAKER DUB: MCPULLISH MEETS DUB FANATIC *Johnny Horn is the Dub Fanatic, a lunatic bent on mixing dubs of supreme quality in his fortified compound: Utmost Sound- Seattle WA. McPullish is a cat wrangler, psychic warrior and dub maniac based in Buda, Texas. Through a mysterious chain of events, these two mutant mixologists joined forces in 2009, initiating a rhythm exchange program that continues to this day, melting speakers, amps, hearts and minds in the process. From the rainy streets of the Emerald City to the tumbleweed-strewn open range of the Texas Hill Country, these dubwise remixes have traveled thousands of miles, over giant canyons of reverb, swamps full of shifting phase and through caverns of echo, filtered through customized electronics, finally chopped up and blended into new and delicious sonic sandwiches. Dub Fanatic and McPullish are currently planting the seeds of a sequel to this dubwise collaboration.
CHA16 GENERAL SMILEY MEETS MCPULLISH AT DUB COVE Back in 2008 when he passed through Austin, Texas on tour, General Smiley linked up with McPullish at Dub Compound Studio for a late night dub session after a show. When Smiley heard the music McPullish was working on he was inspired to record some new lyrics he had been carrying around in his head, thus creating their first collaboration: Natty Natty. Smiley also recorded some fiery dub specials that evening and these two have been collaborating ever since. Charlie is happy to report that a full length album and full dub companion album have been completed by the duo, and will be released in the near future. The music on this album is a fresh take on roots reggae, dub and more, drawing from a wide palette and many diverse influences.
We are offering six songs from the album plus dub versions to you (via link at top of this email), and also offering a FREE download of the album's first song to the public: I Wish (No More War) directly from the Charlie's web shop, link is here:
Charlie's Street Team exclusive music!
** *Bring the Ganja* is a new tune fresh from Dub Cove studio by *Ken Serious*, it's his first collaboration with McPullish on the* Shepherd
Riddim*. This one is a *serious* ganja anthem from the top-ranking Jamaican deejay and Texas dub-meister. The attached mix is an exclusive pre-release version, mixed with soundsystems in mind, different from the mix that will be released on the *Shepherd Riddim* one rhythm album. Watch for more cuts to emerge on this riddim in the following months, including singer Jahn TI's original song *Shepherd*, a blazing horns version and more.

|
|
|
November 19
Music lovers in Canada will be in for a big treat when three ‘distinguish gentlemen’ of reggae head to Toronto for the show of a lifetime dubbed 'Men of Distinction' on November 19 at the Double Tree Hotel 655, Dixon Road. Presented by Rinkah and Fam Records, the event will feature veteran singers Dobby Dobson, Pluto Shervington and Boris Gardiner.
Dobson, nicknamed 'The Loving Pauper,' is one of the great, soulful voices of the rocksteady era. Among his many hits are Loving Pauper, Mexican Divorce and Muriel. Last year, he was the recipient of a "Lifetime Achievement Award at the inaugural Linkage Production Awards in NY. The former Kingston College old boy also stole the spotlight with a jaw-dropping performance that had fans dancing to hits like "That Wonderful Sound," "Sweet Dreams," "Muriel" and "Loving Pauper." Earlier this month he was again recognised for his contribution to the music industry with the Order of Distinction (OD) in the rank of Officer by the Government of Jamaica on National HeroesDay. The smooth voice crooner will be heading to Canada on a high as not only has he been honoured in New York and Jamaica, but he was also recognized in Miami for his contribution to music as well. When it comes to delivering lovers rock classics, veteran crooner Boris Gardiner has an extensive catalogue of hit songs which he will be unleashing on fans in Canada. REGGAE ARTIST, BOB ANDY, PENS FIRST SONG IN 20 YEARS AND IT'S FOR marie-claire
|
|
|
L-R: marie-claire, Nelly Stharre, Bob Andy and Ayeola George at Studio 38
KINGSTON, Jamaica - Not since penning songs for Marcia Griffiths 20 years ago has Keith ‘Bob Andy’ Anderson written a full original song for another artist. The Legendary Reggae Singer/songwriter met Dominican opera singer marie-claire at Studio 38 the night of July 25th 2010. He told her that very night that he would write her a song. Fast forward a year and three months later, the song “Constellation” is recorded and available for your listening pleasure.
marie-claire's rich vocals, along with the haunting base line and the steady reggae organ riffs combine with his simple yet stoic lyrics to form what will one day join his other works as a classic.
marie-claire will fly in from New York City for the Bob Andy Tribute concert to be held on Friday October 28th. She will arrive on Tuesday the 25th and depart on Monday the 31st.
"Constellation" is available on marie-claire's EP “the dreamland project”.
The song was produced by Bob Andy and Drezion, recorded at Champagne International Studios and mixed at by Rohan Dwyer.

REGGAE: THE BASTARD CHILD OF THE MUSIC INDUSTRY
|
|
“ Marley dominates the Billboard reggae chart” was the jubilant Jamaican Gleaner headline being shared with the Facebook JA diaspora. An article lauding the talent of the Marley family with congratulatory glee as they continue to ride on the top of the reggae charts.
Take a look at the Billboard Reggae charts; you will find them shoved at the bottom of the page under the ‘additional Charts/Genres’ stuck between “New Age” and “Soundtracks”. Sure enough, Damian/NAS are number one, Stephen at number three and Ziggy at number four.
Heavy metal group, Metallica sold 15,620,000 and country artist, Shania Twain sold 15,499,000. However, Stephen Marley sold 20,539; Bob’s other off-spring Ziggy sold 13,191 and Damian a healthier 255,786 sales but that was probably since it was a co-brand with US rapper NAS.
Millions of hits on Youtube and their fathers image a multi-billion-dollar industry but where is are the record sales? Where are the sales in general of reggae music and why is it so extremely low? Where are the corporate endorsement that back reggae as a bankable brand.
What are the issues? Jamaica-the-brand? While the culture of the country is raped and pillaged by major companies internationally, it’s become more the hyper-ealistic version of it that’s more appealing than buying into the real deal. There is an intrinsic lack of trust in the people and the country's image. The first global reach most experience of Jamaica is via the Tourist Board marketing. And, the JTB don’t do the nation any favours. A continued push of the high-walled, huge gated all- inclusive market and the bolstering of just images of beaches, clearly promotes the subtext that it’s not safe to be off the beaten track coupled with the foreign press printing highly exaggerated tales of civil unrest does from a marketing point of view have a direct effect of ALL export sales and this includes music.

MORE HONOURS SHOWERED ON REGGAE'S CROWN PRINCE
|
|
|
Music legend Dennis Emanuel Brown, OD, is now permanently honoured in London, Sydney and Hollywood, Florida at Hard Rock Hotel and Casinos in all three cities.
The 40-year-old Hard Rock brand is known worldwide for delivering great hamburgers, great times and an extensive, priceless rock 'n' roll memorabilia collection. Rockin' in over 150 locations, in more than 50 countries, this home of rock 'n' roll legends embraces reggae music and its Crown Prince Dennis Emanuel Brown, OD.
Doris Osceola, a member of the Seminole Tribe of Florida, donated Dennis Brown pieces for the Sydney and Hollywood, Florida locations. At the personal recommendation of her close friend reggae singer Sheena Spirit, who worked as well as performed with Brown, Osceola asked entertainment consultant, Debbie Allen, to collaborate with Hard Rock.
Thanks to the generosity of singer/songwriter Daniel Brown and family, who donated one of Dennis Brown's acoustic guitars, it is now on display in the lobby of The Vault in London's famed Hyde Park Corner.
Valued treasures The Vault, is in fact, where Hard Rock keeps its most valued treasures. Appropriately enough, the building was once where the queens of England sent their treasures for safe keeping, when it was the old Coutts Bank.
In dedicating his father's guitar Daniel Brown wrote, "This guitar was used to create a lot of our father's works over the years, a number of which have become classics today."
Dennis Emanuel Brown's (February 1, 1957 - July 1, 1999) career began in the late 1960s when he was a boy of 11. He went on to record over 75 albums and was one of the major stars of the sweet, hip-swaying lovers rock style of reggae music. It was Bob Marley himself that dubbed Dennis "The Crown Prince of Reggae," calling Brown his favourite singer. Dennis Brown continues to be hugely influential on generations of reggae singers. Timeless hits like No Man Is An Island, Money In My Pocket, Love And Hate, Should I, Revolution, Love Has Found Its Way, and How Could I Leave play on as his body of work contains numerous classic testaments to the heart and soul of reggae music.
His hit, The Promised Land, was reworked and released in 2010 by Damian Marley and Nas featuring Dennis Brown. The New York Times music critic Ben Ratliff, in 2010, described him "as one of the greatest singers of the last half century."

GENE CLEMETSON : : IRON SHORE
|
|
“For the past 15 years or so, guitarist / singer Gene Clemetson has made his reputation in the NYC Reggae scene as an ace guitarist for such music legends as Max Roach, The Meditations, Burning Spear, The Congos, Easy Star All Stars, Wyclef Jean and others. But now, he's stepped out on his own as a leader. After all these years, Gene now presents his long awaited project that combines his Reggae roots with Jam Band performance philosophy. His debut CD "Iron Shore" delivers this formula with great aplomb.
"Iron Shore" represents Gene's roots on the northwest coast of Jamaica. It is an album that transcends many moods, from melancholy to aggressive, from meditative to downright carnal, all with the mandatory foundation in Reggae rhythm. The CD features singles such as "Give It Up", "Woman With a Past", "Hotel California", and a rootsy interpretation of Jerry Garcia’s classic "Sugaree". Guest appearances by Jamaican musical legends Sly Dunbar (drums) and Stephen Stewart (mixing engineer, keys) only help to sweeten the mix. These tracks showcase not only Gene's lofty vocals but also the blazingly deft guitar work for which he is so well known.
After you get the CD, check out Gene and his band at a venue near you.”
