Mr. Vegas asks Reggae fans to save genre's foundation with new petition |
|
International Reggae star Mr. Vegas is urging fellow musicians and music fans to sign the Save Foundation Reggae petition - an appeal to radio disc jockeys to include the music of classic or 'foundation' Reggae pioneers like Dennis Brown, Bob Marley, Culture, and Alton Ellis into their Island Hop-driven playlists. The online petition also makes an appeal to Jamaica's current crop of producers, who have flooded radio with Hip Hop inspired beats instead of the island's signature bass-heavy rhythms.
"Reggae music is like the heartbeat of Jamaican people and culture, and now it is barely played on popular radio stations anymore," says Clifford 'Mr. Vegas' Smith. "Young people today have no idea who Cynthia Schloss or Hortense Ellis or Delroy Wilson are. These are people, who pioneered Reggae, who created a space for people like Sean Paul, and even Sean Kingston and Iyaz to be pop stars. Radio barely plays foundation Reggae, and many of our producers have abandoned traditional Reggae and Dancehall rhythms for American sounding Hip Hop beats. This petition is to let them know that foundation Reggae is still a crucial part of our culture and we must preserve our musical heritage and legacy."
Furthering his Reggae mission, Vegas, a MOBO award winner known for Billboard charting smash singles like "Heads High," "Pull Up," and urban radio bangers "Tek Weh Yuhself," "Hot Wuk," "I Am Blessed" and "Gallis," will take a bold new step by releasing Sweet Jamaica, his first full Reggae album. Scheduled to drop in 2012, Sweet Jamaica will feature over a dozen Ska and foundation Reggae singles - a departure from his usual Dancehall-fueled releases. The album's lead single "Sweet Jamaica" has already been embraced by Reggae and Dancehall fans around the globe, hitting #1 on Reggae charts in Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States earlier this year, while the video, which also features Shaggy and Josey Wales, hit #1 on the MTV Base Dancehall video charts.
"Next year will be Jamaica's 50th anniversary as an independent nation. Reggae music was born roughly around the same time that Jamaica became a free nation," says Mr. Vegas. "I am working on the 'Sweet Jamaica' album which celebrates the past fifty years of Jamaican music. Everything on the album is goning to be foundation - covers of foundation Reggae classics, and original material with foundation Reggae and Ska beats and melodies. Our music has become very diverse over past half-century, but at the core it is still foundation Reggae. I really want to bring the foundation back into contemporary popular culture."

'No crime committed' in Smiley raid |
|
No criminal offence was committed during a police raid which resulted in the death of reggae singer Smiley Culture, according to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).
The singer, real name David Emmanuel, died from a single stab wound to the heart during a police operation at his home in Surrey on March 15. The four police officers who were in the house at the time did not commit any offence during the raid, the watchdog ruled. It also ruled that were "no individual failings which amounted to misconduct" of the officers.
However, investigators flagged up "concerns" about certain aspects of the home search, including "operational planning and risk management", said an IPCC spokesman, who added that a separate report detailing the concerns and making recommendations is being sent to Scotland Yard. The full investigation report has been sent to the coroner dealing with Mr Emmanuel's case. The inquest into his death, which will be held before a jury, will not take place until the conclusion of two criminal trials to which Mr Emmanuel was allegedly linked.
The full IPCC report will be published when all of the proceedings have concluded, a spokesman said. Mr Emmanuel's death was described as "bizarre" by his family, who also criticised police at the time. Mr Emmanuel, who was 48, found fame as Smiley Culture with a string of 1980s hits including Cockney Translation, and he appeared on Top of the Pops. His autobiographical 1984 hit Police Officer tells how he was caught in possession of cannabis but let off when the officer recognised him as a reggae artist.

Will Beenie Man perform on Sting? |
|
source: Jamaican Gleaner
THERE is still uncertainty as to whether of not self-proclaimed King of the Dancehall Beenie Man will appear on the annual Boxing Day reggae festival Sting.
The artiste yesterday released a statement calling on Sting promoter Isaiah Laing to explain what he meant during a recent television interview, when he said he will not perform on the show dubbed 'the greatest one-night reggae festival', if this is not forthcoming.
"How Laing fi go pon TV and mek dem speech de say we ah old artistes and caan do nothing fi him show? Him no respect the dancehall veterans who help to build the industry in no way. Every year, him attempt fi disrespect we in some way, and mi not doing Sting this year unless Laing come explain to me what him mean by 'old artiste'. If Bounty waan a clash, him haffi link me at some other show," Beenie Man said in a statement.
In response, Laing scoffed at Beenie Man's call for an explanation. "I didn't make such statement. Beenie Man is lying and I would like him to show me the clippings of the interview where I made such remarks," he told Splash via a telephone interview yesterday.
The promoter further stated that he believes Beenie Man doesn't want to perform at the annual show because of the anticipated clash with lyrical rival Bounty Killer, whom he believes is too 'hot' for Beenie Man. "Beenie Man doesn't have a problem with me, clashing against Bounty Killer is his real problem," Laing added .
In his statement Beenie Man also revealed that in the wake of Laing's interview, he was approached by both Elephant Man and Bounty Killer to do a show which they would organise.
"Killer and Ele come to me up at Suzie's and say which part we ah go keep our show. Mi check it out and did a plan fi use Jamalco inna Clarendon and do the show on December 31. And now mi hear Killer ah say mi a run from clash, but mi fraid a Killer, mi nah run, and mi will clash him at another show apart from Sting. Killer bow too much, look how easy him mek Laing bring him in and ah use him fi bring mi in," Beenie Man said.
Beenie Man explained that he is not attempting to fight against the Sting concert which is held on Boxing Day in Jamworld in Portmore.
"Sting is a good show and we need it fi continue fi help buss the next generation of artistes, but mi just no like how dem treat the artistes who inna the industry. Look how me and Killer ah do clash song and ah build a vibes and him come pon TV and just kill the clash song dem right inna the middle of the promotion, and den him ah come draw back fi we after him dun diss we. Mi caan deal wid it no more," Beenie Man said.
Beenie Man left the island on Wednesday to do a two-week European tour.

Bob Marley’s widow, kids sue half brother over name use for music festival, businesses |
By Associated Press
MIAMI — A feud has erupted within the first family of reggae, with the widow and nine children of Bob Marley suing his half brother to stop use of the Marley name to promote an annual Miami music festival and profit from other businesses in his native Jamaica.
The lawsuit filed Thursday in federal court contends the half brother, businessman Richard Booker, and several affiliated companies are violating copyright and trademark laws by using Marley’s name, photographs, lyrics, symbols and other intellectual property without authorization.
The lawsuit says people could be deceived into thinking those uses are officially endorsed by Marley’s widow, Rita Marley, and their children. Booker and Bob Marley shared the same mother.
The entities include the Bob Marley Movement of Jah People Inc., which promotes the music festival, a restaurant in Jamaica called Mama Marley’s and several businesses with the name Nine Mile — the part of Jamaica where Marley grew up and is now buried. One Nine Mile business offers a tour of the area, and the music event is known as the Nine Mile Music Festival.
In addition, a recent press release about the music festival included this headline: “All For The Love Of Bob Marley.” The 19th annual festival is scheduled for March of next year on Virginia Key, near Miami. Three of Marley’s kids — Stephen, Damien and Julian Marley — are scheduled to perform.
Marley, a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, died of cancer in 1981 at age 36. Some of his best-known songs are “I Shot The Sheriff,” ‘’Jamming,” ‘’No Woman, No Cry,” ‘’Get Up, Stand Up” and “Exodus.”
The lawsuit, filed by Fort Lauderdale
attorney Bruce Hemerlee, seeks unspecified damages and also asks a judge to stop Booker and the companies from using any Marley-related references in the various ventures. Hemerlee represents Rita Marley and the children through a Bahamas-based entity called Fifty-Six Hope Road Music Ltd.
Booker, whose home and businesses are in Miami, did not immediately return a telephone call Friday seeking comment. A spokeswoman at his business said a statement may be issued later.
According to the festival’s website, the event’s roots date to a Bob Marley fan club begun in 1981. That gradually grew into the music festival and related food drive that has collected more than 2 million canned goods for shelters in Miami and Jamaica.
The lawsuit says that Rita Marley and her children have long opposed Booker’s attempts to trademark Marley-related business names and that at one point they reached a licensing deal, but Booker reneged on the deal.

The Rock Steady Revival Tour |
|
Rocksteady is a music genre that originated in Jamaica around 1966. A successor to ska and a precursor to reggae. In Tribute to the Classic Rock Steady era we are proud to present to you—The Rock Steady Revival Tour. Brought to you by Ujama News & Rock steady Legends, The Melodians.
Kick of Tour February 2012....Bob Marley Month!
The Melodians

The Melodians are one of Jamaica's greatest Rocksteady groups, cutting a series of classic singles during the late '60s and early '70s that included the internationally famed "Rivers of Babylon" and "Sweet Sensation." In 1966, when driving rhythms of ska were abandoned in favor of the slower, more soulful Rocksteady, Jamaican performers discovered a freedom of expression they had previously been denied. In overcoming the limitations of ska the dawn of the Rocksteady age begun. .A few groups rose to notoriety with none more popular than The Melodians.
The group was formed in the Greenwich Town area of Kingston in 1965 by Tony Brevett (brother of Skatalites bassist Lloyd Brevett), Brent Dowe and Trevor McNaughton. Close friend, Renford Cogle.assisted with writing and arranging material. In 1966 The Melodians made their recording debut with Clement "Coxsone" Dodd's Studio One label with the releases "Lay It On". "Meet Me", "I Should Have Made It Up" and "Let's Join Hands (Together)" Early in 1967, The Melodians moved over to Duke Reid's Treasure Isle label recording successfull hits "You Have Caught Me," "Expo 67," "I'll Get Along Without You," "You Don't Need Me" (which featured U-Roy), and "Come On Little Girl". These recordings established them as the sweetest-sounding vocal trios on the Rocksteady circuit.
The Melodians are in the process of releasing a new album with producer Willie Lindo on a major Label. With the release of the new album they will be touring cross the US and Europe.

Internationally acclaimed Dancehall/Reggae superstar, Busy Signal plans to start off the New Year with a bang as he aims to revitalize a perceivably dying genre. |
|
The artiste, whose real name is Reanno Gordon will unveil his all-Reggae album in February 2012, according to his manager, Shane Brown. Busy Signal’s been somewhat absent from the Dancehall scene in recent months a result of work done on the new album as well as a rigorous overseas touring schedule. One of his more recent singles was a remix of Kenny Roger’s classic song, The Gambler, which appeared on the VP Records produced, Reggae Gone Country compilation.

Brown, also a producer for Penthouse Records, revealed that Busy Signal’s album will be unveiled in three months, despite local radio stations choosing to ignore Reggae in recent times.
"Busy is doing a 100 per cent reggae album and Jamaican radio stations throw away reggae music. Collectively, we are in the studio working on this album and finishing Romain's (Romain Virgo) album too; both of which are due early next year," Brown told the Jamaica STAR.

Cosmo Jarvis :: Is The World Strange Or Am I Strange
|
Following two sold-out shows during his visit to Australia last month, Gay Pirates singer Cosmo Jarvis is set to release his new single She Doesn’t Mind, taken from his acclaimed album Is The World Strange Or Am I Strange?, on November 25.
Jarvis has directed and produced the video for his latest track; a reggae-tinged outing extolling the virtues of a tri-lingual, trombone-toting girlfriend.
The singer is also in the middle of shooting his first full-length feature film, which he has also produced and written. Called Naughty Room, Jarvis describes it as being about parenting, as well as taking responsibility to better yourself.
“The hardest part of making this film was not being older,” he said.
“People just don’t want to deal with you in a professional manner if you’re young. But truly the worst part was hearing Mr Spielberg was up on the Dartmoor, our local beauty spot, making War Horse with a crew of fuckloads, rather than two Volkswagen Golfs.”

If you wish, and we really wish you wouldn't, like to be removed from this list, please reply with REMOVE in subject line.
It will make us very sad if you do, and perhaps your removal will be the one the makes us decide this no longer worth doing at all, and all the information we provide will go away forever and musicians will sit home alone at night and cry because they have no one to play for because no one knows about their shows. Your call?..
