Going digital - Jamaican music site to begin online distribution |
|
Popular entertainment website Jamaicansmusic.com is expanding into digital distribution.
After recently surpassing the two million-followers mark on social networking site Facebook.com, Jamaicansmusic has decided to help use their popularity to push Jamaican music sales.
The site is now expanding into digital distribution with the desire to find new ways to not only promote reggae music, but also encourage people to buy it, which is what Alex Morrissey, Jamaicansmusic.com's CEO, believes is the perfect venture for the popular Internet brand.
The website will be partnering with Dubshot - the digital distributors for labels such as Madhouse Records, Sound Bwoy Entertainment and Mystic Urchin, and will be able to get their products on storefronts like Amazon and iTunes. With 250,000 unique views each month, 65,000 persons on their mailing list internationally, almost two million Facebook fans, and 20,000 Twitter followers, Jamaicansmusic.com is confident that when it comes to the Internet they will be able generate awareness for their product.
According to Chris Schlarb of DubShot Records, "Dubshot is proud to be joining in a strategic partnership with Jamaicansmusic.com, we are excited about developing a relationship with a technology partner who is providing new and exciting ways to interact with reggae music online."
Morrissey explained that there will be a direct-to-consumer tab on the site's Facebook page where fans can buy downloads directly. The tab will feature Jamaicansmusic.com products as well as offerings of the Dubshot catalogue. Persons will also be able to purchase on the site as well as on Amazon an iTunes. "In addition to helping fans of this music genre learn more about their favourite artistes, this partnership will allow up-and-coming artistes in Jamaica to have access to international digital distribution and marketing," Schlarb added.
In honour of the launch, Dubshot's partner, Madhouse Records, will be featured with an exclusive specia-edition digital-box set of 27 titles for US$49.99. Individual albums will be specially priced at $4.99, 50 per cent off digital retail. This promotional price will last until Christmas day as a treat for the holiday. The collection will feature classic rhythm albums such as 'Joyride', 'Pepperseed' and Cham's double-disc debut album Wow ... The Story. Madhouse Records owner/producer Dave Kelly told The Sunday Gleaner, "As a label, we always get into the holiday spirit, so we wanted to offer something exclusive for our fans to wish them a warm Jamaican Christmas."
Schlarb highlighted that "this is a great opportunity for fans of dancehall music to buy one of the most respected catalogues in the genre directly from the artist/ label" Morrissey said he was excited about the upcoming project. He explained, "This is a massive step for the company moving into an area typically dominated by large record labels. This further highlights the growth of the company and our efforts to meet the needs of our international fan base who may not or cannot use iTunes, so we have direct-to-consumer options that include Paypal. This is the best, and a legal avenue to get the music they want on demand."
The first products coming out through Jamaicansmusic/Dubshot will be by JA Productions with the Master's Blend rhythm, and then later next month with the much-anticipated 'Rumfire' rhythm.

A Fire Burning for Freedom : A conversation with Ziggy Marley |
|
Interview and text by Bret Lueder www.bretlueder.com Photo by Cyd Rice
Ziggy Marley is a man of the world. He is a jack-of-all trades. He is a Mack-Daddy of artistic expression.
Everywhere he goes he spreads love. He is an unstoppable juggernaut; a showcase of positivity and a harbinger of good things to come. If you love to smoke marijuana, rejoice! If you have ever been made to feel like a degenerate, a social outcast or an outright criminal because of your love of the consciousness-inspiring plant, you can now fully relax. This is a guilt-free zone. The time is now to live wild and free.
While Marley wants to make it perfectly clear to everyone that he is an advocate of all of the aspects of the marijuana/hemp plant—the tens of thousands of crude oil-based products which can be made more durable, cheaper and cleaner for the Earth if made with marijuana/hemp as their bases as well as the many medicinal purposes—and not simply the smoking aspect, he is also taking the acceptance of the smoking aspect to new social, ahem, highs.
As a well-known marijuana/hemp advocate, Marley has not only performed for President Obama at the White House during the Easter Egg Roll celebration in 2009—the Obama administration is currently attempting to shut down all cannabis coops in all 15 states were the medicinal use of marijuana is legal; (see Worth Repeating: Reasons Obama Will Shut Down Medical Marijuana By Steve Elliott Monday, November 7, 2011 at 2:20 pm; www.tokeofthetown.com); not only has he been chosen to represent the United Nations youth program Goodwill Youth but he has also been on such mainstream television shows and national events such as Sesame Street and Charmed and a recent Macy’s Day Parade with his daughter Judah.
You’d think that if the powers that be do not want the knowledge of the goodness of marijuana/hemp to become widely-known, then they would stop inviting this marijuana icon to all of these high-profile functions. But there is just something about this man; his message of love and his music that is making marijuana/hemp acceptable. Marley is so positively convinced that marijuana/hemp can help solves all of the world’s problems, he’s created a marijuana comic book super hero character called Marijuana Man. The graphic novel uses Marijuana Man as a metaphor for the good that marijuana can do for all human beings and for the planet. And, of course, Marley’s new album, Wild and Free (2011), is like the soundtrack to the comic book: It is full of positive and inspiring words about the power of marijuana/hemp to help the world and human consciousness.

Orthodox Jewish Rapper Matisyahu Shaves Off Iconic Beard |
|
ABC’s Cassandra Arsenault reports:
Orthodox Hasidic Jewish rapper Matisyahu has sported a lengthy beard for years, not as a fashion statement but as part of his religious beliefs. However, the artist has taken a razor blade to his trademark facial hair.
Matisyahu broke the news of his clean-shaven face, with photos of himself sans beard, Tuesday, first on Twitter, saying, ”@matisyahu At the break of day I look for you at sunrise … When the tide comes in I lose my disguise.” The message is taken from the lyrics of his song “Thunder.”

Born Matthew Miller, Matisyahu has become the most visibly Jewish artist in hip-hop since his debut album “Shake Off the Dust… Arise.” His music blends traditional Jewish themes with reggae, rock, and hip-hop beat boxing sounds.
Initially, the 32-year-old artist’s motives behind the drastic shave were unclear, but then Matisyahu followed up his tweet with a simple explanation on his website: “No more Chassidic reggae superstar.”
“Sorry folks all you get is me…no alias. When I started becoming religious 10 years ago it was a very natural and organic process. It was my choice. My journey to discover my roots and explore Jewish spirituality—not through books but through real life.” Matisyahu wrote. “I felt that in order to become a good person I needed rules — lots of them — or else I would somehow fall apart. I am reclaiming myself.”
Although his non-existent facial hair may seem unfamiliar to his fans, he reassured everyone that his music would stay familiar and be something worth looking forward to in 2012.
“Get ready for an amazing year filled with music of rebirth. And for those concerned with my naked face, don’t worry…you haven’t seen the last of my facial hair,” he said in a statement.
