Kwanzaa: Honoring the Values of Ancient African Cultures |
by Holly Hartman
The year 2011 will see the 46th annual Kwanzaa, the African American holiday celebrated from December 26 to January 1. It is estimated that some 18 million African Americans take part in Kwanzaa.
Kwanzaa is not a religious holiday, nor is it meant to replace Christmas. It was created by Dr. Maulana "Ron" Karenga, a professor of Black Studies, in 1966. At this time of great social change for African Americans, Karenga sought to design a celebration that would honor the values of ancient African cultures and inspire African Americans who were working for progress.
Kwanzaa is based on the year-end harvest festivals that have taken place throughout Africa for thousands of years. The name comes from the Swahili phrase "matunda ya kwanza," which means "first fruits of the harvest." Karenga chose a phrase from Swahili because the language is used by various peoples throughout Africa.
The Seven Principles (Nguzo Saba)
Each of the seven days of Kwanzaa honors a different principle. These principles are believed to have been key to building strong, productive families and communities in Africa. During Kwanzaa, celebrants greet each other with "Habari gani," or "What's the news?" The principles of Kwanzaa form the answers.
The Principles of Kwanzaa
umoja (oo-MOH-ja)
Meaning: unity
Action: building a community that holds together
kujichagulia (koo-jee-cha-goo-LEE-yah)
Meaning: self-determination
Action: speaking for yourself and making choices that benefit the community
ujima (oo-JEE-mah)
Meaning: collective work and responsibility
Action: helping others within the community
ujamaa (oo-JAH-ma)
Meaning: cooperative economics
Action: supporting businesses that care about the community
nia (nee-AH)
Meaning: a sense of purpose
Action: setting goals that benefit the community
kuumba (koo-OOM-bah)
Meaning: creativity
Action: making the community better and more beautiful
imani (ee-MAH-nee)
Meaning: faith
Action: believing that a better world can be created for communities now and in the future

Apache Indian releases Home Run |

Apache Indian releases Home Run
‘Boom Shack-A-Lak’ hit maker and talented Indian Reggae artist Apache Indian is back with his latest album Home Run.
Released today (December 5, 2011) in India, the album has four new songs along with some classic Apache Indian numbers. The artist is currently working on a promotional video.
In an exclusive interview with PlanetRadiocity, Apache spoke about the new album, his connect with India and Bollywood plans.
When quizzed about Home Run, Apache offered, “The album has four new songs and some old ones too. Not the obvious ones like ‘Boom shack-a-lak’ and ‘Arranged Marriage’, but some songs that we’ve selected after a study of the Indian market—including a song composed in collaboration with AR Rahman for a movie. Asha Bhosleji and Malkit Singh are on the album. It’s got a lot of flavors.”
“It’s called Home Run because I’m running home to India, and I want to spend more time in here. It’s important for my generation to connect closely with India, otherwise the next generations are going to be further away,” he said.
Apache doesn’t plan to switch to the ‘break mode’ anytime soon. With another album coming out in March (2012), Apache has a lot to look forward to. “We’re even talking to some people about a Bollywood movie on the lines of Apache Indian: Live story. So lot of different things going on,” Apache added.

Rusty Zinn :: Manifestation
|
Video Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSD1pRzHP-s&feature=player_embedded
Song: My God
In the spring of 2009 Rusty Zinn realized a long held dream, and spent two weeks in Kingston, Jamaica, the birthplace of reggae, to soak up the vibes and work on a new CD. The project was organized by Rusty with the help of his friend and mentor, Mikey Chung (Now Generation, Peter Tosh, Black Uhuru, Sly & Robbie) who played guitar on six tracks on “Manifestation”. Rusty and Mikey were joined on the six song session in Kingston’s Mixing Lab studio by none other than the great Sly Dunbar on Drums, Boris Gardiner on Bass, Robbie Lyn on Keyboards and the legendary Scully Simms on kette drum and percussion. With such true reggae royalty lined up behind him, Rusty has created a very soulful piece of Reggae art which Roger Steffens has already hailed as “a lustrous album of all faiths-embracing hymns for the new century”.
Rusty’s new release, “Manifestation” opens with “Give Something You’ve Got” recalling the golden age of early Reggae with a tip of the hat to the great Jimmy Cliff whose live performances had a huge impact on Rusty’s decision to make a commitment to sing and play Reggae music. “For Creation” follows with a classic roots reggae sound featuring some wicked kette drum work by Scully Simms. There are many other stirring roots reggae originals on the set with conscious and spiritual messages such as “Mankind” where Rusty asks “why do they call us mankind” rooted firmly in the Rasta wordplay approach, as well as the title track “Manifestation” which was inspired by Rusty’s belief in manifesting one’s vision which ultimately led him to Jamaica. On “My God” Rusty gives insight into his opinion that if all the nations of the world could unite under one Creator, things would be much better on earth as we know it. The final track is a Dub companion to “My God” which will excite fans of classic reggae dub sounds. Rusty’s roots reggae are uncompromising and unapologetic but also have something to offer in the way of inspiration to all walks of life, to all color, class, and creed.

If you wish, and we really wish you wouldn't, like to be removed from this list, please reply with REMOVE in subject line.
It will make us very sad if you do, and perhaps your removal will be the one the makes us decide this no longer worth doing at all, and all the information we provide will go away forever and musicians will sit home alone at night and cry because they have no one to play for because no one knows about their shows. Your call?..
