The recent general elections conducted in Jamaica on December 29th, 2011 will go down in history as a significant day for more than one reasons. Never in the history of the country has there been an election as peaceful and it is the first ever that Jamaicans duly elect a female, the Honourable Portia Simpson Miller to govern their country. Jamaica Election Day 2011 was also the sixteenth conducted in the country. The newly elected People's National Party (PNP) which forms the government has won nine of the sixteen elections with three consecutively from 1982-92 by former Prime Minister PJ Patterson.
Another historic moment that emerged at the peak of election season was the staging of STING 2011 dubbed, 'The Greatest One Night Show on Earth.' For those who are not informed about this event, STING is the most highly anticipated Reggae/Dancehall event held in Jamaica on Boxing Day, December 26th of each year. This event showcases a multiplicity of talents ranging from the best to the least and is well attended or viewed. It was widely felt, that the risk of staging the concert two days before the general elections might result in low attendance by patrons, but it was not so for this show which was titled this year as, 'RUMOURS OF WAR!' With all the odds against it, the Supreme Promotions teamed pulled it off and without the popular Dancehall stars like Vybz Kartel and Mavado who many also felt had to be headliners for the event to attract a huge crowd. As it turned out, STING 2011 was well attended and free of incidents.
Jamaicans won when they showed the world in both scenarios (elections and STING), both over the years have registered moments in history that have tarnished the image of the country and its people. One might argue that the event was to a far lesser extent and indeed this is so. Now when both have done well, when the people of this country demonstrates their maturity as it relates to conducting themselves in these instances, when it matters most, much must be made of this.
Many Jamaicans home and abroad have suffered or been ridiculed due to the outcome of these events over the years and have always been placed on the defensive in reference to their homeland, this is unfortunate. But a time has come where the world have seen that the land of wood and water, home of 'out of many one people' have matured and come a far way. Jamaicans in Jamaica? You all have won! Congratulations!!
Wishing you and yours all a Happy and Prosperous 2012

Jamaica: Low Budget for Reggae Month Critisized |
|
At Tuesday's signing of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Jamaica Reggae Industry Association (JaRIA) and Association Reggae Sun Ska (ARSS), the calendar for Reggae Month was also publicised. And former JaRIA Chairman Freddie McGregor was outspoken in his disappointment with the money that the organisation has been given to run Reggae Month.
He said, "Our music is so valued and respected over the world, why is it being treated with such scant regard in this country?" He pointed out that Reggae Month is for Jamaica as a whole, then demanded, "How can $1.2 million stage Reggae Month? The question is not if we can do Reggae Month. $1.2 million cannot do Reggae Month." With the start of Reggae Month 2012 less than two clear months away, McGregor said, "If we don't see it (the money) in December, we in trouble".
And McGregor pointed out that "Jazz and Blues got $60 million to do jazz and blues in reggae country". The Reggae Month 2012 calendar starts with a Dennis Brown Tribute Concert on Sunday, January 29, and closes on Wednesday, February 29 with a Dancehall and Alternative Reggae Month weekly event at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, as well as the fifth consecutive week of Weddy Weddy, celebrating Reggae Month. There are only four days in February 2012 where there is no Reggae Month event.
Later in the event, JaRIA chairman said that "what Mr McGregor is saying is that there is a disparity in support", while remaining supportive of organisations within the music business. The "disparity and imbalance in support" is even more striking as "a large part of the money will be exported paying overseas acts".
Sydney Bartley of the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, noted that "Reggae Month 2012 must be something that the Government supports. 2012 is the 50th anniversary of Jamaica's Independence. It would not be a good 2012 celebration if the celebration did not live up to reggae and its prowess".

SLY AND ROBBIE AND THE TAXI GANG - FEATURING BITTY MCLEAN -- AVAILABLE FOR FESTIVALS |
The legendary Sly and Robbie and The Taxi Gang consists of top of the line all star studio musicians who have produced many of the great hit reggae rhythm tracks over the years. On stage, the Taxi Gang is big and bold, working with ease and exceptional talent. On their next U.S. shows they intend to feature Bitty Mclean, from the UK. They toured Europe in the summer of 2010 and again in July/ August 2011 with Bitty Mclean and Junior Reid as featured artists.
Bitty Mclean is a much loved UK reggae talent with an astonishing voice and unnerving ability to pen a pop smash. The early 90's saw Bitty McLean launch himself into the high end of the British charts with a string of top ten hits. Since then his hits have continued to come and he also continues to rise to the top of the bill as a live vocalist and crowd pleaser. His double AA side The Real Thing/All That I Have, produced by Sly and Robbie has risen to the top of Reggae charts throughout the world.
Sly and Robbie, affectionately known as the Riddim Twins, are perhaps the premiere architects of the modern sound of Jamaican music. Building on the cornerstones of Studio 1 and other early pioneers of the Jamaican recording industry, Sly and Robbie became the driving force behind the fabled Channel 1 sound that dominated reggae throughout the late 70's and early 80's. Subsequent work, most notably with Peter Tosh and Black Uhuru, set the pace for the changing sound of reggae in the post-Bob Marley era. Their stellar playing and production work have also graced albums for a host of international artists including, among many, Bob Dylan, Britney Spears, Alicia Keys, UB40's Ali Campbell, Grace Jones, Joe Cocker, No Doubt, the Fugees, Michael Franti, Sinead O'Connor, The Rolling Stones, and countless others. Jamaica's Golden Jubilee Gets Jazzed Up! |
|
Half Pint Organisers attract Thursday crowd to Jamaica 50 celebrations with lower ticket prices Montego Bay, Jamaica:Music is one of the strongest elements of Jamaican culture, and in recognition of this, the Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival - The Art of Music 2012 edition will feature a sterling tribute to the dynamic, energetic and riveting genres that have made up Jamaican popular music.
Art of Music Productions (AMP), the producers of the festival, have dedicated Thursday night, January 26, 2012 to Jamaica 50, when they will present an exciting journey through Jamaican music.
The production company has co-opted a slew of Jamaica's best artistes to create an excellent event that will kickstart the celebration of the important anniversary.
"Jazz is the first major event for Jamaica 50 and will therefore set the tone for the celebrations," explained Junior Taylor, associate producer with Art of Music Productions.
"The idea is to showcase the music from the time we gained our independence to now," he said. Thursday night's tribute to the golden jubilee will therefore present a musical tapestry featuring some of Jamaican music's greatest from the different eras, showcasing the best of ska, rocksteady, reggae and dancehall.
The impressive roster is a diverse mix that will surely sate the wishes of fans of all Jamaican genres. The multiple-platinum recording artiste and international sensation Shaggy, is sure to whet appetites with his magnetism, gravely voice, and catchy, witty tunes that will send waves of excitement through the audience. Dancehall's first king, Yellowman as well as the original ragamuffin, Half Pint, will have original dancehall fans rocking to the beat.
Reggae's first empress Marcia Griffiths and the young lioness Etana, the poetic philosopher Luciano and Mykal Rose will delve into reggae's more mystical and prophetic side. For those who wish to immerse themselves in the sounds of lovers rock, the timeless Freddie McGregor and the inimitable John Holt are guaranteed to please.
Several artistes - The line-up will also feature George Nooks, Chris Martin, AJ Brown, Pluto Shervington, Lloyd Parks and the We the People Band and the Dragonaires. The extensive, solid line-up will deliver short, energetic performances that will create a visual kaleidoscope of Jamaican music, drawing from their own hits as well as other iconic songs. Additionally, the night's musical fare will be held together by a narrative that will guide the musical journey.
Taylor explained that the Jamaica Jazz and Blues' Thursday night leg has traditionally enjoyed the lowest turn-out of the three-night festival. He noted that the lower attendance results from fewer people being able to take off from work to attend on Thursday. It is however anticipated that this year's special line-up and other incentives will have more patrons flocking to the venue.
Indeed, as though the fabulous line-up wasn't enough, Art of Music Productions is sweetening the incentives by lowering the ticket price for general admission. So, in tribute to Jamaica 50, general admission tickets for Thursday night will be only US$50 ($4,290.00). VIP tickets are priced at US$120 ($10,296).
The Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival - The Art of Music 2012 is a historic 16th staging and will also feature international artistes: Celine Dion, Cee-Lo Green, the Temptations, Richie Stephens, Gentleman, Jully Black, Nicole Henry, Tami and Tessanne Chin and Destra Garcia. The festival takes place at the Trelawny Multi-Purpose Stadium, Trelawny, from January 26 - 28, 2012.

Reggae legend Little Roy releases single 'Lithium' taken from Nirvana covers album |
|
Little Roy has recently released new single 'Lithium' through Ark Recordings. The single is lifted from his recent album with Prince Fatty and Mutant Hi-Fi, Battle For Seattle, a collection of 10 songs recorded by Nirvana covered by the legendary Little Roy in a reggae style.
A man with the ‘right credentials’ Little Roy cut his first single at the legendary Studio One in 1965 and grew up in Kingston surrounded by many of Jamaican music’s biggest hitters – Prince Buster, Lee Perry, Bunny Wailer & Peter Tosh. Later a growing interest in the emerging rasta religion saw him release some early roots classics such as ‘Prophesy’, ‘Christopher Columbus’, and ‘Tribal War’ and most recently he has worked with Adrian Sherwood releasing an album on On-U Sound Records.
Following an acclaimed session on Jools Holland’s Later show in October where he played ‘Lithium’ and ‘Heart-Shaped Box’, Little Roy was recently praised byNoel Gallagher on Jo Whiley’s Music show who stated that Little Roy’s album was “probably the greatest thing I have ever heard”.

Fully Loaded (Double CD Set): Fully Fullwood |
|
CD Review by Bret Lueder (www.bretlueder.com) It’s been about 8 years since legendary bassist George “Fully” Fullwood released his debut CD, For All Time (2003), a double-CD set of seventeen tracks showcasing his multi-talented musical capabilities. It was rereleased in 2006 after striking a distribution deal on the Bad Daddy label. The album marked several firsts: Among them, it was not only the song-writing debut for Fully, but it was also the debut of Frances Fullwood, Fully’s wife since 1982, as a song writer and collaborator. And after years of backing up almost every well-known reggae singer from the late ‘60’s through unto today, it was high time Fully tried his own vocal chops. The result: a tender, sweet voice which sings songs of love in its many forms.
Many of the songs on For All Time were written by, or with Frances, including the title track.“The first song I ever wrote was “For All Time” which is the title song on the For All Time album. I never planned to write songs; it just happened. As I was waking up one morning I heard a song in my mind as I was coming out of a dream. I wrote the words down on a piece of paper that was beside the bed and handed it to Fully and said, ‘Here, I think I wrote the first song. What do you think?’ He read it and said, ‘I think I can use it.’ Up until then, neither one of us had thought about writing songs. We had decided that Fully was going to do a solo album, but we had assumed it would be all instrumentals. I used to write poetry but hadn’t written anything for years. But that dream woke up the sleeping poet in me and I’ve been writing ever since. Fully is such a musical genius, and it is always such a thrill when he takes my words and makes them come alive with his music.
To me, this is what ‘Word, Sound and Power’ is about: Word = the lyrics, Sound = the music, Power = the result of Word and Sound coming together and bringing a message that communicates truth.”Now, eight years later, and after debuting new material over the last several years touring with the Tosh Meets Marley Tour—brainchild of early Bob Marley road manager and long-time reggae maven Mark Miller, Fullwood has recently released his second solo album, Fully Loaded (2011). Another double-disk set chalk-full of songs of love, Fully Loaded is 22 tracks strong with many of the instruments being played by the reggae icon himself. Most of the songs are written by or with Frances as well. Fully Loaded was also produced, like For All Time, by both Frances and Fully in their Fully’s Kitchen Studio in San Clemente, California. The two have become quite the talented duo.
So where did Frances learn to produce records?“It’s been a ‘learn-as-you-go” experience,’” described Frances. “In 1989 Fully was managing Andrew Tosh and took him on his first U.S. tour with Fully’s band, the Soul Syndicate. It was during that tour that Fully told me he wanted to produce an album for him. I agreed. I really liked Andrew and saw great talent in him and I had total confidence in Fully. The result was Andrew’s Grammy-nominated album, Make Place For The Youth (1989), Fully was the musical producer and I took care of the other ‘stuff.’ We worked together to produce For All Time and Fully Loaded and are presently working on several other projects, which are in various stages of production.”Centering on the “love” theme, Frances’ writing is simple and straightforward. Detailed images are conjured with few words. Check out “Love in the Desert” with the lyrics, “…We’ll make love in the desert/ you and me/ and there will be a big yellow moon/ and we will build a fire to keep us warm/and we will have a cup of tea…”
The style works well with the hypnotic musical approach of Fully driving that heartbeat reggae riddim during longer rhythmic interludes on Fully Loaded tracks like “Another Mother is Crying,” “Abandoned by Your Love” and the title track, “Fully Loaded.”
Make sure to look for Fully Fullwood on the road with Mark Miller’s Tosh Meets Marley tour in 2012 where he will be playing songs not just from his new solo arsenal, but also several key hits from both the Bob Marley and Peter Tosh catalogues, two of the many reggae giants of which Fully and his bands have backed-up over the years. And they will be joined by key band members of both the Wailers and the Fully Fullwood Band which backed Peter Tosh during his legendary run.Fully also plays his own charity event almost every Sunday all year long at Don the Beachcomber in Huntington Beach, California which benefits children in the greater southern California area. For more information go to www.fullyfullwood.com.

If you wish, and we really wish you wouldn't, like to be removed from this list, please reply with REMOVE in subject line.
It will make us very sad if you do, and perhaps your removal will be the one the makes us decide this no longer worth doing at all, and all the information we provide will go away forever and musicians will sit home alone at night and cry because they have no one to play for because no one knows about their shows. Your call?.. |
