Nia WellBeing - January 2012
Dancing into 2012!
I sat on the nearly deserted beach clearing the remnants of 2011 with rejuvenating breaths of salty sea air. The hush of crashing surf like a soothing lullaby created an ideal cadence for peaceful being. Cyclonic winds hundreds of miles away had created giant waves, wild currents and flash rips that moved sandbars sideways in front of my eyes. Mesmerised by the ocean's majestic power and wondrous at nature's connectedness I sensed my body ebbing and flowing to restore its dynamic equilibrium, its natural state of vibrant health.
When Annie aged 9 asked where waves come from I explained that waves are not made of water but are energy transported through the water in response to natural forces. Our body, like the ocean is a moving energy field and how we move, think and feel shapes our reality. As I let go of fear and ask instead “what would love do?” I experience the magnificence of deep inner peace and expansive radiance. It’s a sensation I feel when I am dancing and sharing Nia that I am learning to bring into my daily life. Grounded in our body and connected with our heart we can develop a flowing and coherent response-ability to life's storms and surges.
With mindful reverence we paddled in the swirling waters anchoring our feet in the sand, keenly aware of the need to stay present in our body and go with the flow. Arms wide open, I felt alive to Spirit, like I could hug the whole world.
We watched the surfers get back on their boards after being dumped over and over again, riding endless waves to master the art of balance, timing and embodied relaxation in each moment. Attuned to the wisdom of the sensing body, not the busy, thinking mind they lovingly surrender to something bigger and become one with the wave to find effortless grace, liberating freedom and deep connectedness.
And so it is for me with Nia when I let go of getting it ‘right’, of how I think I ‘should’ be and merge with the music and movement to discover, express and celebrate the conscious, expansive, heart-wide-open love that I am, that I believe we all are. As I sense resistance to returning home after a magical 9 days by the beach with my children, I ask 'what would love do?' The answer... dance into 2012! Coming?
Here's to making it the best year of your life!
love Sophie

“I believe that the very purpose of life is to be happy. From the very core of our being, we desire contentment. In my own limited experience I have found that the more we care for the happiness of others, the greater is our own sense of well-being. Cultivating a close, warmhearted feeling for others automatically puts the mind at ease. It helps remove whatever fears or insecurities we may have and gives us the strength to cope with any obstacles we encounter. It is the principal source of success in life. Since we are not solely material creatures, it is a mistake to place all our hopes for happiness on external development alone. The key is to develop inner peace." - Dalai Lama
