Reggae Exchange Programme Launched - Jamaican Canadian Companies Ink Deal |
|
Fabian Hanson (right) of Vibes Entertainment in Canada and Isaiah Laing, head of Supreme Promotions, shake hands on a deal to begin a reggae exchange programme between Canada and Jamaica at The Wyndham Kingston hotel recently.- Photo by Errol Crosby
Sadeke Brooks, Staff Reporter
After several years of working together, Supreme Promotions' Isaiah Laing and Fabian Hanson from Vibes Entertainment in Canada have formalised a partnership that will include an exchange programme between the two countries.
Speaking with The Sunday Gleaner
recently, both parties explained that they had been working together since 2005 but had only now signed a five-year partnership to help develop young acts in both countries.
"We were chit-chatting but I didn't know he had this up his sleeve long ago," Laing said.
Hanson said the entertainers they will target will not be limited to deejays and singers only, but will include disc jocks, dub poets, and actors.
"There is talent there that needs to be developed and exposed on an international level," said Hanson, who has done shows in Canada like Platinum Party, All Black Affair, Grown and Sexy, and Shabba in Concert.
He noted that many of the reggae and dancehall acts in Canada did not necessarily come from Jamaica, but were influenced by Jamaican parentage. He added that some of these acts open reggae shows in Canada but they are not as hard-core as those based in Jamaica. Hence, he wants to bring them to Jamaica, where the reggae hub is.
As part of the development process, Laing, who also promotes Sting that was held on December 26 at Jamworld in Portmore, said they would be grooming the talent and marketing it on the international stage. This will involve the acts doing performances in both countries, as well as recordings. The first of these shows with the acts in the exchange programme will take place in Toronto in a few months.
"We would want to develop and then over another two years, we would see something major coming out of it. Once we are getting the backing from both governments, it should work," he told The Sunday Gleaner.
Laing said that more inspiration for the cultural exchange programme came after seeing some strong performances from the young acts at the recent staging of Sting.
"The young acts took Sting this year. There was never a boring act," he said.
Hanson added: "It's for the development of every and any artiste. It's for any aspect of entertainment."
Some of the acts they will be working with are Cush Hunter, Food Kartel, Blaze, Attaru and Ray-Tay from Jamaica. Acts in Canada include Isus, Esco Levi, Terminal, Grizzly Cat, and Major P.

Lovers Rock documentary makes rounds |
|
Howard Campbell Observer senior writer
THE Story of Lovers Rock, a documentary by Barbados-born film-maker Menelik Shabazz, is making the rounds in New York City.
'Lovers Rock' debuted in November at the Quad Cinema in Greenwich Village. It will have three screenings at the Black Spectrum Theatre in Queens on February 3-4.
Shabazz looks at the history and impact of lovers rock in the 90-minute film. The sound's roots can be traced to the rocksteady era when singers like Alton Ellis defined the softer tones of Jamaican popular music.
Lovers rock took off in the late 1970s through Dennis Brown. But it was in Britain that it was perfected by a new wave of black British singers including Maxi Priest and Janet Kay.
Priest became the breakout artiste of these performers. He had many hit songs on ethnic charts, including Should I, Wide World and Some Guys Have All The Luck.
Freddie McGregor, like Brown, was a favourite in Britain. He also had big hits there in the 1990s with That Girl and Big Ship.
Shabazz' film was released in Britain in September to critical acclaim. It contains interviews, comedy sketches, dance, live performances and archive footage of artists like Janet Kay, UB40, Maxi Priest, Levi Roots, Linton Kwesi Johnson, comedians Angie Le Mar, Robbie G, Eddies Nestor and new artistes like Ava Leigh and Lovella Ellis.
The New York Times film critic Kam Williams praised 'Lovers Rock': "You can add The Story of Lovers Rock to the short list of must-see, politically-tinged documentaries which shed light on the cultural roots of a lesser-known musical genre, a la Calypso Dreams and Buena Vista Social Club."

THE ITALS -- AVAILABLE IN NORTH AMERICA - FEBRUARY 2012 - ON TOUR |
|

Out of Savana La Mar, Jamaica, Keith Porter and Ronnie Davis are some of the hardest touring reggae artists in North America. These music messengers have the drive and perseverance to perform in some of the farthest North American outposts. For this sacrifice, they are greatly loved and respected by their fans near and far. Keith Porter's father was a minister in Jamaica, and with these roots, Keith is bringing forth the message.
Known for their tight harmonies, and uplifting songs of glory, these reggae ambassadors have been touring fresh and strong since the early eighties. After many hard years on the road, they are still youthful and in good health. Keith Porter has proven himself to be one of the strongest men in the business. His endurance is remarkable. Keith "never gets weary". The Itals are living samples of the "Rasta Philosophy".
The Itals continue to champion the roots reggae sound they helped to create. The band got their start in the late 1960s when friends Alvin "Keith" Porter and Ronnie Davis, then known as the Westmorelites (named after Jamaica's Westmoreland parish), recorded the hit single "Hitey Titey" for Clement "Coxsone" Dodds' esteemed Studio One label. Porter and Davis crossed paths again in 1975 and recorded their classic "Ina Dis Ya Time" as the Itals, taking their name from the Jamaican patois word meaning natural - pure and unprocessed.
The Itals are recognized as one of reggae's premier "harmony groups." The diverse seaside community of Westmoreland, where Keith grew up, greatly influenced his laid-back singing style, and the righteous outlook on life often described in the Itals' music. In contrast to the violence and sexism that runs through some of dancehall's most popular tunes, the Itals' roots reggae sound remains to this day focused on positivity, love and harmony.
"Got to reveal, got to reveal. The truth that is hid, has got to reveal", chant the Itals. "Sing farewell to my enemies. Sing farewell to my enemies -- Alphas love is over me." The Itals songs help us remember God and the Holy Spirit, and to count His many great blessings. Just for the gifts of sight and hearing, we could never be thankful enough. "Temptation is a thing trying to keep me away from Jah glory. I love, I love, I love - Jah glory."
When the Itals hit the stage, Jah glory is in full effect.

Reggae artist Luciano Bottled In Nigeria |
|
Dec 2011 29
Reggae singer Luciano’s Christmas eve performance in Nigeria was marred with the hurling of empty water bottles by some youths who attended the closing of the 2011 Rivers State Carnival aka CARNIRIV held at Liberation Stadium.
According to Punchng.com reports, the singer was invited to perform at the event by the consultant handling the cultural festival. However, patrons on hand were not comfortable with Luciano’s reggae music.
To show their disgust, music empty water bottles were thrown at him during his set. A shocked Luciano asked the crowd: “What’s happening? You don’t want me?” The report also went on to say that Lucanio’s understanding was that the festival was to showcase African culture.
“I am a messenger of God. Don’t you want the message? I was in Ethiopia, they (Ethiopians) received me. I was in Gambia, they received me. Why won’t you receive your brother?,” said the artiste who is known for his favourites such as Lord Give Me Strength and Sweep Over My Soul.
Not even his One Way Ticket to Africa could win the singer any points with the crowd as the objects continued to fly at him. In the end, he left the stage.

Why Jamaican artists are flocking to Zimbabwe |
|
Howard Campbell, Jamaica Observer
For decades, reggae artistes from Marley to Sizzla, have portrayed Africa as the Motherland, the seat of black repatriation.
Fittingly, the continent has become a happy hunting ground for Jamaican artistes and this trend picked up pace during 2011.
As traditional markets like the United States and Europe falter due to economic challenges, Africa and Latin America have emerged as viable alternatives.
This year, some of the biggest names in contemporary dancehall and reggae have performed in Africa.
They include Sizzla, Queen Ifrica and Tony Rebel, Busy Signal, Cocoa Tea, Elephant Man and Fantan Mojah. Gyptian is scheduled to close the year with dates in Nigeria.
Kenya Don is CEO of the Stepping Razor television show in Nairobi, Kenya. Since 2004, he has been the link for African promoters keen on having Jamaican artistes perform in their countries.
“We’ve had countless reggae artistes in Africa in the last six years. It’s like a revolution,” he told Splash.
Fans in The Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe have seen a variety of acts through Stepping Razor’s growing network.
Beenie Man, TOK, Ce’Cile, Christopher Martin, Alaine, Kiprich and Turbulence have also taken their act to Africa. In recent months young acts including Mr Vegas, Elephant Man, Mavado, Denyque, Wasp and Konshens have performed in Africa.
According to Kenya Don, one country stands out. “The government in Zimbabwe has really embraced Jamaican culture.
“Promoters from outside that country prefer to do shows there because there’s a lot of leeway,” he said.
Reduced taxes on promoter and artiste fees are the most attractive of the concessions in Zimbabwe which has an historic bond with Jamaica and reggae music. Bob Marley was an inspiration for rebel fighters during the 1970s when the country was known as Rhodesia, and ruled by the racist Ian Smith.
Marley performed in Zimbabwe in 1980 in recognition of its independence.
Cocoa Tea and Fantan Mojah, who performed in the cities of Harare and Bulawayo in November, were the most recent dancehall/reggae artistes to perform in Zimbabwe. Sizzla is the biggest name there, performing to as many as 50 000 fans.
Kenya Don credits his Stepping Razor show for introducing Africans to the new wave of reggae music.
The 90-minute programme, which debuted in 2007, features artiste interviews, music videos and live events. The show is produced in Nairobi and has viewers in 34 African countries.
There were several reggae package tours to Africa during the 1980s and 1990s, but artistes complained of being ripped off by shady promoters.

Max Dread Minaya :: El Libro de mi Memoria
|
This song and music video is about the life growing up in my village on the mountain country side of Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic. It portraits my infancy, youth growing up in a natural base environment. The breeze blowing, the bird singing, the rain falling creating mudslide, no electricity,no running water, but getting it in a bucket from the oasis real and simple life. Many natural vegetations, unlike living in a city cocrete jungle with all noise and people no one can trust. It is a paradise, no violence, robery, but unity among the community. The real life people all over the world should have the privilege to have this type of life style, peace and meditation. Farming and eating fresh, natural from the ground.
It is a way of thinking I should be there living until the end, but the reality I am not there, but one day It will be.
It is how respectfull our neighbors are , unlike other places where they rather rob one another, instead of sharing among each other. Thanking Jah rastafari for putting I and I on this earth, living the simple life, staying humble as to the fullest and as much as possible.
A message for all kind, not an individual, family, friends, unfriends, friends, but all in the same page of life, instead of negative thinking of sefishness and hate, but unity love and much more than what it should be.

If you wish, and we really wish you wouldn't, like to be removed from this list, please reply with REMOVE in subject line.
It will make us very sad if you do, and perhaps your removal will be the one the makes us decide this no longer worth doing at all, and all the information we provide will go away forever and musicians will sit home alone at night and cry because they have no one to play for because no one knows about their shows. Your call?..
