NEW EVENTS ON CALENDAR

The Downhill at Dawn Half Marathon is in its 6th year and is exactly what the name says, it is downhill and it starts at dawn on Saturday, June 2 (about 6:00 AM).  The race begins at the Ridgecrest Conference Center outside of Black Mountain and runs down to Old Fort on mostly gravel roads.  There is shuttle service to get you back to Ridgecrest after the race if you wish, a four-person relay category and lodging and meal options at the Ridgecrest Conference Center.  This is going to be a fun race in beautiful country and we expect the race to reach its 500 cap before race day.  Go to www.RidgecrestConferenceCenter.org for information and link to registration.

The amazing Mainstay organization in Hendersonville is transforming their successful 10-mile trail race into two off-road triathlons – The Mountain Melody Triathlons - on Saturday, September 8 at Camp Greencove in Summit, NC.  The morning race will be a 800 meter, point-to-point swim, 6.3 mile mountain bike and 10K run while the afternoon race – My First Tri – will have a 300 meter swim, 3 mile mountain bike and 5K run.  Both swims will be in Summit Lake while the bike and run legs will be held on the Camp Greencove property.   Following each race there will be a BBQ meal with beer.  Registration will open March 1 and will be capped at 150 per race.  Go to www.MainstayHelp.org for more information.

COME SEE US IN DURHAM

Glory Hound Events will have a booth at the North Carolina Multisport Conference & Expo on Saturday, March 10 in Duke University’s Wilson Center.  Come see us at Booth 29 as we will be offering special discounts and taking registrations for all of our triathlons, saving you on both entry fees and service charges.  We will accept cash and credit cards and don’t forget your USAT card.

FEATURED EVENT – MTA LAKE JAMES TRIATHLON

If you are in the Charlotte, Hickory, Greensboro or Asheville area and looking for a stress-free, high quality triathlon for May, look no further than Marion and Lake James and the MTA Triathlon on Saturday, May 19.  The race is much like those at Lake Logan because you get the benefits of a mountain race (cool temperatures, clean lake, friendly people) with flat terrain.  Last year the race was wet suit legal but those who chose not to wear one were comfortable too.

The race has a 750-meter swim, 22-mile bike around Lake James and a 5K run on the trails of Lake James State Park.  The race is put on the by the McDowell Trails Association and produced by Blue Ridge Multisports, offering easy parking adjacent to the single transition area, a great post-race meal and amazing volunteers.  For information, click HERE and we hope to see you in May.

SWIM EVENT ADDED TO LAKE LOGAN WEEKEND

The program of the Lake Logan Multisport Festival continues to expand with addition of the Lake Logan Open Water swimming event this year.  The 1500-meter race will be divided into two divisions: The US Masters Swimming division will include any current member of this organization; the Open division will include any non-USMS participant and will have a 17 and under age category.

Wet suits will be allowed but only those not wearing wetsuits will be eligible for awards, and in the case of the USMS division, points for national rankings.

The Open Water divisions will start after the Aquathlon and will use the same rectangular course.

Registration will open March 1 and cost $25 through June 30.  Click HERE to go the race page.

AND THE WINNER IS …

Thanks to all who completed our survey from the last E-News, where we asked what you would like to have for awards this season.  The overwhelming majority said pottery so we are hard at work to find nice things for everybody.

As an incentive to complete the survey, we offered a prize of one free entry to any Glory Hound race this year.  The winner of this drawing is Julia Schneider of Asheville.  Congratulations, Julia and thanks to all for providing this valuable input.

TOUR DE CASHIERS – CYCLING’S HIDDEN GEM

Many of us in the triathlon world use organized bike events to not only provide incentive to train during the winter months but also as a great gauge of fitness going into the race season.  One of the hidden gems of the North Carolina cycling world is the Tour de Cashiers in Jackson and Macon counties of Western North Carolina.  Centered in the resort town of Cashiers, the event features a full, half and quarter century ride where you will traverse lightly traveled roads through the area famous for its waterfalls.

The 21st Tour de Cashiers will take place on Saturday, May 5.  The full century and half century rides are not for the feint of heart, as they provide 10,500 feet and 7,200 feet of climbing, respectively, but they will offer a day you won’t forget and looking forward to next year.

Information about the Tour de Cashiers can be found at www.TourdeCashiers.com.

RAMBLE RUN ADDING TEAMS, KIDS RACE

The Ramble Run 5K/12, Presented by Mission Sports Medicine, in Asheville on Mother’s Day Weekend, May 12, has added team divisions and a fun run to the 2012 event. This will be the second year for the event that drew over 1,400 runners to Biltmore Park last year. The race is unique because of the Mother’s Day theme that has special Mother/Child team categories in both races, gives flowers to all women at the finish line and has a Parent’s Race Out program at the Reuter YMCA with free child care while mom and dad run. New for 2012 is the Great Beginnings Pediatric Dentistry and Haldeman Orthodontics Kids Kilometer Fun Run and 4-person team categories for corporate and civic organizations. Entry fees increase on March 1 so enter now and save money. Click HERE for information and link to registration.

BOAT RENTALS FOR FRENCH BROAD CHALLENGE TRIATHLON

Registration is well ahead of last year for the 3rd French Broad Challenge Triathlon on Saturday, May 25 in Asheville.  This is the most unique race on our schedule featuring four distinct legs, including a 2-mile paddle leg on the French Broad River.  If you are interested in participating but don’t own a canoe or kayak, have no fear, our hosts at the Asheville Outdoor Center can help you with a rental for race day.  They will even go pick up your boat after the race.

The race is part of the 2012 Mountain Sports Festival that also has two running events, a cyclocross race, disc golf all three days and a dodgeball tournament, not to mention three days of music, outdoor industry vendors and Asheville’s world famous beer.  The first 100 adult registrants at our race will receive a coupon for a free beer after the race.

Click HERE for information on the French Broad Challenge Triathlon, including the link for rentals at the Asheville Outdoor Center.

COURSE REVEALED FOR BELE CHERE 5K

As we announced in the Fall 2011 E-News, the 33rd Bele Chere 5K, Presented by Southeastern Sport Medicine, will be moving to Pack Square Park in downtown Asheville.  The new course, seen HERE, will have more running inside the festival village and feature an 80’s theme to commemorate the new course that follows much of the original 1980 course.  Race details are at www.BeleChere5K.com.

LAKE LOGAN – THE PERFECT CLUB GETAWAY

If you are a member of a triathlon club, please consider the Lake Logan Multisport Festival as a perfect location for a club race.  Not only does it offer races for all skill levels but clubs may set up tents in our large open space for no charge.  These are a great place to gather before and after the races with your fellow club members and recruit new members from your area.

The Lake Logan Episcopal Center offers cottages, dormitories and camping, allowing everybody to stay together for the weekend.  Call Linda at 828-646-0095 for reservations.

If you are interested in having a space for your club, send Greg a message at greg@gloryhoundevents.com and include the name of your club.

If you are looking for a replacement for the Lake Junaluska Duathlon, an old race is being brought back in 2012 in Franklin, NC.  The Mountain Madness Duathlon returns on Saturday, April 28 with all proceeds going to the Greenville Shriner’s Hospital.  The event will consist of a 4 mile Run, 14 mile Bike and 2 Mile run with both run legs held on Franklin’s amazing greenway.

RUNWAY 5K TO RETURN IN 2012

Circle October 6 on your calendars for the coolest running race of the season. That Saturday marks the return of the Runway 5K at Asheville Regional Airport. This year, the entire runway and taxiway will be used giving runners an even faster track than before.  Registration opens on July 1 and we expect well over one thousand runners to participate in 2012.
