Dear Friends,
I'm writing to remind you that this Wednesday, May 9th, the Dmitri Matheny Group featuring Dave Ellis will premiere my latest work, Crime Scenes, at Yoshi's Oakland.
Crime Scenes is a new composition inspired by espionage and underworld movie music. Drawing on classic themes from film noir, B-movies, spy thrillers and crime dramas, Crime Scenes is presented as a series of dreamlike flashbacks, conceptually linked together through voiceover narration in the hard-boiled detective style of Raymond Chandler.
The DMG will also perform favorite material from our nine CDs, including original arrangements of familiar jazz classics, hard bop, west coast cool and beloved standards from the Great American Songbook.
The show concludes a two-week series of tour appearances throughout Northern California and the Pacific Northwest, featuring Dave Ellis on tenor and soprano saxophones, Matthew Clark on piano, Seward McCain on bass, Akira Tana on drums, and yours truly on flugelhorn, plus surprise guests.
We hope you can join us for this exciting journey into new jazz territory!
