Blues News You Can Use!

Michael Burks

1957 - 2012

As you probably know by now, Michael Burks, an Arkansas Native and International Blues Master  passed away from a heart attack last Sunday in Atlanta.

Michael was a true blues giant and one of the best performers out there. He was nominated for Best Blues Guitarist of the Year at this year's Blues Music Awards held last night in Memphis.

If you ever met Micheal, you know what a genuine nice guy and kind hearted soul he was.  He will be missed.

Bobbie, Micheal's wife established a Michael 'Iron Man' Burks Memorial facebook page on Tuesday (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Michael-Iron-Man-Burks-Memorial-Page/306970219378459) and  posted this message on the page:

I would like to thank everyone for the enormous outpouring of love for my husband. Thank all of you for the kind words posted about him, for sharing your memories, for the text and phone calls that I haven't answered but please know I am receiving and appreciating everyone of them. I know everyone wants to know about services and memorials, but right now I can't think much beyond the moment. I am in Atlanta now making arrangements to get my baby back to Arkansas. I will be letting all of you know plans as soon as I know them.

Bruce Iglauer from Alligator Records also put the following message up on Facebook earlier this week -- Thank you to everyone who has sent kind words and photos of Michael Burks. Michael's wife has asked that, rather than flowers or cards, you might send a donation in his memory to the HART Fund of the Blues Foundation.

They help blues musicians who are facing health problems (as so many are, and of course usually without insurance). You can go to the HART Fund donation site here and if you scroll down you'll see that there's a place to leave the donation in Michael's name. Thanks.

Tas Cru - Legacy Blues May 19th

It is not for nothing he has been called "the master of the triple entendre."  His songs are eccentric, quirky, and sometimes boldly irreverent with a repertoire that is equal parts power, passion, and pure pleasure. As a songwriter, Tas Cru is a poet of the blues,  whose telltale life lessons are revealed with a rare verbal flair. This combined with his soulful voice and skillful guitar and tasty harmonica work has earned him a reputation as a one of the most unique of bluesmen plying his trade today.

Tas Cru's discography includes four albums of original songs - "Biscuit" (2006), "gravi-Tas "(2008), "Grizzle n' Bone" (2009) and "Jus' Desserts" (2010). A new album is currently in the works, "All Stirred Up" scheduled for release later in 2012. In addition to these albums is Cru's 2009 recording, "Even Bugs Sing the Blues", an album of original blues music for kids. This album is not for sale. Instead Cru donates copies to schools, community groups and blues societies to use for their fundraising efforts in hopes that it will help inspire a new generation of blues fans and musicians.

Based out of upstate New York. Cru performs in a variety of formats ranging from solo-acoustic to a 7 piece backing band.  Plan to check out his performance at Legacy Blues in Fayetteville on Saturday, May 19th.
