Sierra Nevada World Music Festival in
Northern California (Mendocino County)
This Weekend! |

The Sierra Nevada World Music Festival kicks off next weekend, June 22-24, at the Mendocino County Fairgrounds located in Boonville, California. Sierra Nevada features 3 days of the best in roots reggae and world music taking place on two stages, with a late-night "Jamaican style" dancehall.
In addition to more than three dozen bands, the 19th annual Summer Solstice and World Peace Celebration also includes an extensive schedule of children's and cultural activities, arts and crafts, an international food court, family and alter-able camping and vendors galore. With beautiful streaming colors and exotic aromas, the festival village is an attractive marketplace of food and craft booths created by the collective efforts of artists, vendors, staff, volunteers and ticket buyers that has something to offer children of all ages.
Each year, the Sierra Nevada World Music Festival gathers the best in roots reggae and world music from the four corners of the globe to grace the festivals' stages and this year is no exception. Jamaica's own Third World and Jimmy Cliff will highlight the music for Friday and Saturday respectively, while Luciano will be making his first California festival appearance in more than 4 years on Sunday night. Other artists emanating from the home of reggae music include Israel Vibration, The Twinkle Brothers, Johnny Osbourne, Lutan Fyah, Cherine Anderson, Romain Virgo, Sister Nancy, Stone Love, Earl Zero and Prince Alla who will be making his California debut at SNWMF 2012. iKronik will be backing several of these artists as well as performing their own set.
The outspoken voice of England's Linton Kwesi Johnson will be performing backed by the mighty Dennis Bovell Dub Band. UK dubbers Zion Train will also be coming to rock Boonville as will David "Ram Jam" Rodigan who recently had the Most Excellent Order of the British (MBE) bestowed upon him by Queen Elizabeth. The Maoris of New Zealand will be represented by Katchafire and House of Shem. From the islands of Hawaii come Iration, Fiji and J Boog. Hailing from the fertile soil of Southern Oregon's Rogue Valley, Indubious will be coming to spread high vibes while California will be well represented courtesy of Jah Sun, Dub Nation, Rocker-T, Afrolicious, AfroMassive and LoCura. Additional world music will be featured by GlobeSonic Sound System and Miami's Locos Por Juana. The masses of Sierra Nevada are in for a special treat when Chile's #1 party band, Chico Trujillo, takes to the stage on Sunday.
Advance Tickets to SNWMF 2012 are now available online and at our Independent Ticket Outlets. The price for a 3-day music ticket is $160.00. Advance Single-day tickets are $60.00 for Friday or Sunday and $70.00 for Saturday and are only available online. Children 12 and under are admitted free when accompanied by an adult.

Taj Weekes & Adowa Launch North American Tour With New Single Release of “Peace and Love” |
|
|

"Peace & Love" is the third single released off of the band's critically acclaimed third album, "A Waterlogged Soul Kitchen"
|
NEW YORK, June 19, 2012 – Taj Weekes and his band Adowa barely missed a beat between their work on the much-touted Occupy This Album project and the launch of their North American tour, which began this past Friday with the Island Festival in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and continues throughout the summer. The band will appear at events including the Ann Arbor Summer Music Festival, the Newport Reggae festival in Rhode Island, and their Canadian debut at the Toronto Beer Festival .
|
|
The band kicks off the tour with the release of the song and music video, “Peace and Love,” from their acclaimed album A Waterlogged Soul Kitchen. The song is a bitter-beautiful lamentation of gang violence, which draws stark contrasts between the innocence of childhood and blood on the streets (“...and where we used to play graves now lay.”). The music video was filmed in Weekes’ Caribbean island country of St. Lucia and is directed by Drew Renaud, a San Diego Film Festival and LA Shorts Fest awarded American film director, screenwriter, editor and producer.

|
The "Peace and Love" single and music video stand tall next to the band’s most recent release of “Against the Machine” on the 99-song disc Occupy This Album: a compilation of music by, for and inspired by the Occupy Wall Street Movement and the 99%.
Of “Peace and Love” and the band’s full album, music journalist Ted Boothroyd said, “Yes, remarkable creativity, in large measures and small, has been at work here. Musically vibrant, emotionally challenging and intellectually stimulating, [A Waterlogged Soul Kitchen] is the kind of reggae, or rather the kind of music -- or rather the kind of art -- that this world needs.”
|
|
Audiences can experience Taj and the band’s soul-stirring live performances - and much more - in venues across the country. Other performances include appearances at the Irie Woodbury Reggae Festival in Connecticut, and the Square Roots Festival in Chicago. Canadian audiences will get an added treat as Taj will not only perform but he will also be conducting a workshop at the Roots & Blues Festival in Salmon Arm, British Columbia. Check the band's website often for updated information on tour dates, album and video releases, merchandise and much more!
"Peace & Love" is the third release from A Waterlogged Soul Kitchen, which has been listed as best reggae roots album in the U.S. and France. The band will continue to promote the album in the U.S., France and Australia followed by an international tour set to begin in the fall.

Easy Star All Stars Announce Their Next Tribute Album
Michael Jackson's Thriller Gets The Easy Star Reggae Treatment; Easy Star's Thrillah Is Out August 28, 2012, Fall Tour To Follow |

Following up on the hugely successful reggae tribute albums of Dub Side of the Moon (2003), Radiodread (2006) and Easy Star’s Lonely Hearts Dub Band (2009) comes the reggae adaptation of the greatest selling record of all time – Michael Jackson’s Thriller. The album titled Easy Star’s Thrillah will be released August 28, 2012 (a day before the 53rd anniversary of Jackson’s birth). Easy Star’s Thrillah brings back several of the reggae stars from previous albums, such as vocalists Michael Rose (Black Uhuru), Steel Pulse, Luciano, Mojo Morgan (Morgan Heritage), alongside the diverse playing of guests Yossi Fine (David Bowie, Lou Reed, Stanley Jordan), Joe Tomino (Dub Trio/Matisyahu), Andy Farag (Umphrey’s McGee), and horn tracks courtesy of Israel’s highly-acclaimed funk/hip-hop band Hadag Nachash. The album will be preceded by the July 10th digital release of the Billie Jean EP, which includes two album tracks, along with non-album remixes and a dub version.
In selecting Thriller, Easy Star Records co-founder Lem Oppenheimer says, "We've always tackled the greats - The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Radiohead - but while we wanted to take on another huge album, we also wanted to blaze new trails. In Thriller we found those new trails in a number of firsts for the series: the first album by an American artist, the first non-concept album, the first R&B/soul record, as well as the first release from the 80s.”
“For me, I was most excited for Thriller,” says producer/arranger/guitarist Michael Goldwasser. “I was always more of an R&B/soul and reggae kid growing up and I have an intense personal connection to Michael Jackson’s music.” As usual, the process initially involved Goldwasser spending a few months on arranging the songs. “Writing the arrangements for this album was a cool challenge. I didn’t have to try to make non-dance music into dance music as on our previous albums because the original Thriller is so danceable already, but I needed to find ways to make each song groove in a different way from the original version. I didn’t want any of the arrangements to be obvious in that regard.”In the end, Goldwasser’s arrangements are some of the most interesting in his career.
Now that the hard work in the studio is done, the band is looking forward to bringing this music on the road, adding some dance/pop songs to their already varied sets. The band’s live show, which was nominated for a UK Festy Award in 2009, already features tracks from the band’s previous three tribute albums, along with original material. An extensive fall tour of the US and UK is already set up (US dates listed below), with more to come over the next year. As the original Thriller album comes up on its 30-year anniversary in November, what better way to celebrate this timeless album than to catch the Easy Star All-Stars perform their reggae-infused versions of this pop masterpiece.

If you wish, and we really wish you wouldn't, like to be removed from this list, please reply with REMOVE in subject line.
It will make us very sad if you do, and perhaps your removal will be the one the makes us decide this no longer worth doing at all, and all the information we provide will go away forever and musicians will sit home alone at night and cry because they have no one to play for because no one knows about their shows. Your call... |
