Inner Circle Celebrates Jamaica 50 with 5,000+ @ Summerstage in Central Park, NYC ::
Touter Harvey Releases Dubstep Album "Dub Planet X" |
|

Born in Hanover, Jamaica, Hopeton Smythe grew up in Kingston enjoying a not so happy childhood where throughout his youth the true roots of Rastafarianism and reggae music were instilled in him. Growing up he attended Wolmer’s Boys School where he was well known as a talented soccer player with a promising future. Unfortunately, while training, an injury ended his soccer career.
Growing up, Hopeton’s father would sing around the house; while he liked singing as well, he was scared. One day, while singing in his now trademark style of shaking his voice, his friends laughed at him. This reaction deterred him from singing in public again until he had trained his voice, much like he had once trained his body for soccer. He would need discipline if he was to be an artist.
Through he had had no intention of becoming a musician or a reggae artist, Hopeton was a big fan of music and loved listening to acts such as The Stylistics, the Chi-Lites, the Skatalites, Desmond Dekker and the Aces, Dennis Brown, Bob Marley, and the Jackson 5 as well as R & B music. Once he bought a Michael Jackson 8 inch LP even though he had nothing to play it on. Instead, on weekends, he would go to his friends’ houses to play and set off parties.
Once he graduated from High School in the big city of Kingston, Hopeton relocated to Kendal, Hanover, where he really was able to learn about his land and his countryman. During this time he developed into the up and coming, ear catching, positive name soon to be known as Ton-A-Hope
Through marriage, and his pursuit of happiness, Hopeton landed in Mount Vernon, NY in 1986. As a young man in a strange land, he became bogged down by the pressures of work, school, and family. Hopeton later relocated to Virginia Beach, Virginia and it was during this time he became inspired by the passing of artist Garnett Silk who died under tragic circumstances. Garnett Silk, Bob Marley, and HIS Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie appeared to Ton-a-hope in a vision which engulfed him and showed him his true calling. That “Calling” was to carry on the reggae-torch by creating music of the roots reggae genre.
Now living in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Hopeton officially became known as Ton-A-hope through a re-birth which Rastafarians refer to as "Sighting up the Fullness". He is currently pursuing music full time and has made a conscious decision to grow his locks, which serves as a constant reminder of the task at hand, JAH music. Despite enduring life’s hardships, Ton-A-Hope, through perseverance, writes melodies and has developed his own music and style. In 1997 he recorded his first track “JAH Never Leave Us.” Now, many years later, he is a member of the "MANNA OF ZION" band based in Virginia Beach, and here they are with the debut album, “Judge Not.” A Classic…..enjoy!!!!!!

Rugs Does it a Fifth Time - Third World Lead Singer Set to Launch Another Album |
by Davina Henry, Staff Reporter
Lead singer for one of the longest-running reggae bands, William Clarke, more popularly knows as Bunny Rugs, is gearing up for the release of his fifth solo album titled Time. Having been nominated 10 times for the prestigious Grammy Awards, there is still no slowing down for Rugs, who continues to mesmerise audiences with his sound.
The artiste told The Sunday Gleaner this album has been three years in the making. According to Rugs, he was focused on releasing Third World's album before dropping his own. With a September 11 release date, Rugs promises fans wonderful tracks. Rugs is also busy promoting one of his latest singles Land We Love, which has been getting recognition both locally and internationally. The song was originally written in 2006 but was recorded last year. "I wrote the song in 2006, it really wasn't designed for the 50th Anniversary. I saw it in March of last year and recorded it. The reception has been surprisingly, fantastically wonderful," Rugs said.
With Jamaica celebrating it's 50th Anniversary, and Third World celebrating its 40th next year, the entertainer also mentioned the recent controversy surrounding the Jamaica 50 song. According to him, the Jamaican people should have been given a chance to decide on the song. Third World is also gearing up for the release of a 40th anniversary celebration album. The album will include old and new songs. A Third World 'world tour' is also slated to take place with the release of the album.
Although music is his first love, Bunny Rugs is also passionate about his charitable work with the Jamaica Children's Heart Fund.
What started out as seven nurses and doctors from the Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital in Miami using their vacation to perform open heart surgery on children in Jamaica for free, has now expanded and has been renamed Chain of Hope. "It's really been a great mission, and I must also commend Shaggy for his work with the Bustamante Hospital for Children. Doctors from England have also joined the Chain of Hope team, but we need as much funds as possible to help. You should see the faces of the parents whose children we have helped, it's priceless. We really need to highlight that these children need help," Rugs told The Sunday Gleaner.
Bunny Rugs said he was blessed to have his group members who are very supportive of him, especially with his solo career. "It's very easy when you have partners who are very supportive of my effort. I don't really see it as a solo career, I see it as an extension of Third World. I have one of the best jobs in the world, I look forward to each day to go on tour and fly the flag of Jamaica high," he said.

Buju's Appeal Goes Sour - Artiste Could Face More Jail Time |

Buju's attorney, David Oscar Markus. - Photo by Daraine Luton
Arthur Hall, Senior News Editor, Source: Gleaner
Reggae super star Buju Banton is now facing the prospect of having his 10-year prison sentence extended to 15 after a Federal judge yesterday rejected his request for a new trial. Federal Judge James Moody yesterday denied Buju's request for a new trial and argued that there was no need for one in light of an Atlanta Appeal Court's ruling that there was sufficient evidence to convict the reggae star on a gun charge. Buju is now to appear in court for a new sentencing hearing when he faces the prospect of an additional five years. But yesterday, his lawyer, David Oscar Markus, told The Gleaner the fight is not yet over. "I plan on appealing again and will take this to the Supreme Court if I must," said Markus.
"I won't stop fighting for my friend and brother," Markus added.
Last year, a jury found Buju guilty of drugs and gun charges, but Moody did not sentence him on the gun charge because the Jamaican had never met or spoke with James Mack, his co-accused who was held with the gun. Lawyers representing Buju challenged the ruling, but the Appeal Court upheld the decision while sending the matter back to the lower court to decide if Buju should be retried. The Appeal Court also agreed with the prosecution that Buju should have been given prison time for the presence of a firearm during the drug deal.
Charges just over one year ago, Buju, whose correct name is Mark Myrie, was found guilty of conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute cocaine, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug-trafficking offence and using a telephone to facilitate a drug-trafficking offence. The conviction carried a 15-year prison sentence but Moody threw out the gun conviction, lowering Buju's sentence to 10 years. But the Appeal Court argued that, "Given Myrie's familiarity with the drug trade the jury could have reasonably concluded that the carrying or using of a gun by a co-conspirator was a reasonably foreseeable action ...". In appealing his conviction, Buju had argued that the government did not establish that he was part of a drug conspiracy, but the Appeal Court judges concluded that the "evidence on record supports Myrie's conviction". "Myrie demonstrated familiarity with the drug trade, and his behaviour during the instant offence was consistent with his described role of an investor who stays on the outside."
The Appeal Court also rejected Buju's claim that his conviction should be dismissed on the basis that he was entrapped by the State-paid informer Alexander Johnson.
"Johnson only engaged Myrie on the topic of the cocaine after Myrie indicated his familiarity with drug dealing, and Myrie asked Johnson if he could purchase cocaine for him ...," the judges said in their ruling. "Though Myrie testified that he was just trying to outtalk Johnson and that he was not a drug dealer trying to conduct a drug deal, we assume, based on the jury verdict, the jury disbelieved Myrie ... ."
Buju's argument that he should be set free because he did not get a speedy trial was also rejected by the Appeal Court who said any delay was understandable and did not prejudice his defence.

Europe Targeted By Trinidad Reggae Crooner for Next Major Release |
Aaron Marquez is one of T&T’s rising reggae acts and on the heels of news that he will be opening for reggae royalty on August 30 in Trinidad in a concert dubbed, House of Marley, comes information that he is set to create a video for his latest release- a track called, Sweetest Memory. The thing is, the song is being released especially for the House of Marley concert and by the look of things, Marquez is gearing up to leave a lasting impression at month’s end.
Sweetest Memory is carded to be released at the end of this week and according to PengCo Music’s Randal Alexander who doubles up as co-producer alongside VCE productions, and manager for Marquez, the track epitomizes that feel-good, loving reggae vibes of years gone by, fused with a contemporary sound that the team is certain, will be thoroughly enjoyed by music lovers. “ We did this one especially for the concert and we are really looking forward to a high level of support from the men who make the music matter across the board,” said Alexander who penned the track’s lyrics with Marquez. A team of young producers from St. Lucia called CreedKool is producing the video; they were responsible for the supporting video for the Kush Medley, which was done last year. That riddim was produced by PengCo Music and also featured Marquez with his single, That Smell. Alexander said he decided to give the youths another opportunity to show off their skills, a remark that reiterates his continued support for blossoming talent in the entertainment arena.
Amid the imminent release of the single this week, Marquez is working hard, laying new tracks in the studio. Alexander said the team already has four songs ready for release, following Sweetest Memory and assured that their promotional team is working hard to ensure that all music from Marquez is distributed strongly across the European market. “ We’re going hard with this single. We’ll be releasing everywhere in Europe and we’re anticipating a strong show of support out there,” said Alexander. Sweetest Memory is also said to feature the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago- the steel pan, letting it be known, according to Alexander that the production is merely a taste of what the twin island republic has to offer.

Red Fest is an all ages outdoor music event designed to promote quality music and fun in beautiful Red River, NM.
In it’s third year, Red Fest Musical Festival presents:
The Wailers - Together with Bob Marley, the Wailers have sold in excess of 250 million albums worldwide. Outside of their groundbreaking work with Marley, the Wailers have also played or performed with international acts like Sting, the Fugees, Stevie Wonder, Carlos Santana, and Alpha Blondy, as well as reggae legends such as Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, and Burning Spear. As the greatest living exponents of Jamaica’s reggae tradition, the Wailers have completed innumerable other tours, playing to an estimated 24 million people across the globe.
Hieroglyphics - Founded in 1997 in Oakland, CA, Hiero Imperium Records is Del The Funky Homosapien, Casual, Pep Love, Domino, and the Souls of Mischief, made up of A-Plus, Opio, Phesto and Tajai. Coming off waves of success from earlier releases like Souls' '93 Til Infinity, the Hiero crew had already established themselves as a name in underground hip-hop, and soon released their first
collective project Third Eye Vision. Since then the Hiero team has been thriving in the hip-hop world, releasing a number of projects within the label as well as branching out for collaborations with the likes of Jurassic 5, George Clinton, Dilated Peoples, Q-Tip, Xzibit and Gorillaz.
Vokab Kompany - San Diego band Vokab Kompany (Voted San Diego Music Awards “Best Hip Hop” act 2011) has been gaining national notoriety based on the success of their song “So Bright” and it’s appearance in international car company KIA with their 2010 Summer Sales Event Commercial and on The Today Show with Al Roker. The success continued into 2011 with another national Southern Comfort Fiery Pepper commercial, collaborating on the single “Burn It Down” with fellow bandmate; saxophonist, Jesse Malloy, and his production duo Crush Effect.
Nosotros - Seamlessly combines Latin rhythms with the elements of Flamenco, Jazz, Salsa, and Rock, creating an original sound that is unmistakably Nosotros. But M.E. Schenck of Hyperactive Music Magazine may have interpreted their sound best by saying “Nosotros’ music is not to be explained, it is to be felt in the pit of our souls.”
James and the Devil - Your All-Original Rocky Mountain grown Hiphopfiddle’n Funk Rock Band.. Delivering powerful, melodic high energy driven shows in the Rocky Mountain region of the USA.

Matisyahu's New CD Features New Sound & New Look |
His long beard and sidecurls are gone, but the positive vibe and spiritually uplifting message in his music and lyrics are unchanged.
Jewish-American musician Matisyahu has released a CD entitled Spark Seeker with a new sound and anew look. His well-known long beard and sidecurls are now gone, as are most of the distinctive Jamaican reggae flavored tunes. But what remains unaltered are the positive vibe and spiritually uplifting message in his music and lyrics.
Such songs as Tel Aviv'n and Bal Shem Tov express a love for the Jewish religion and homeland. Like on previous releases, there are not always overt Jewish references in the lyrics, but subtle allusions to different hassidic and kabbalistic concepts that could be appreciated by a broad audience.
